Charlene Chalfant
Charlene Chalfant, 66, of Ocean Grove, with family in the area, died Dec. 12, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Arnold R. Blum, Staten Island, N.Y.

She lived most of her life in New Jersey, graduated Curtis High School, Staten Island, N.Y. and Stewarts Business School, Wall. She worked for Cunard Lines, New York City, and later for Jack Kinas, accountant, in Wall, for many years.

She leaves behind to remember her children Mark Coburn, New York City, N.Y., Amy Coburn, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., mother Doris Salvi, Spring Lake Heights, sister Ronell Giresi and brother-in-law George G. Giresi, Lake Como, brother Arnold Blum and sister-in-law Melanie Blum, Sarasota, Fla. Her loving companion Ira D. Schandler, many cousins in Long Island, N.Y., and her entourage of friends will miss her greatly.

Memorial and celebration of Charlene’s life will be held Jan. 12 at 12 p.m. at Trinity Church, Asbury Park, corner of Asbury and Grand aves.

Margaret E. McLoughlin
Margaret E. McLoughlin, 90, of Wall, died Friday, Jan. 4, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Margaret lived in West Orange and was a 30 year resident of Fairway Mews, Spring Lake Heights. She was a parishioner of St. Catharine Catholic Church, Spring Lake, an avid golfer and a later in life bridge player. She was also a person with artistic talent and loved to travel.

She was predeceased by her husband, Matthew, who died in 1988. She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Matt McLoughlin, Jr., and his wife Audrey, Jackson, Brian, Nashville, Tenn., Kevin and his wife Cathy, Rockaway, Paul and his wife Vicky, Forks, Pa., and Lynn Benthien and her husband Rick, Spring Lake and Naples, Fla. Margaret was also the loving grandmother of Neal, Eric, Shaun and Kelsey McLoughlin and Jenny Benthien. Also, her great-grandchildren Morgan, Joshua and Bradon McLoughlin.

Visitation was under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Catharine Catholic Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake.

Entombment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s name to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA., 22311.

Norbert G. Van Bergen
Norbert G. Van Bergen, 85, of Sea Girt, died on Jan. 7.

Born in Elizabeth, he resided in Westfield, before moving to Sea Girt. He was a graduate of St. Benedict’s Prep and Seton Hall University. Norb served with the United States Navy during WW II. He was employed at Mobil-Exxon as a computer programmer from 1953-1963 and then accepted a position as program director for the Union County C.Y.O - Archdiocese of Newark.

He was an active member of the Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, and the food program of the Mercy Center, Asbury Park.

During his retirement, he was a member of St. Mark’s Holy Name Society where he promoted social and spiritual activities for the Parish and community. Norb’s hand was always extended in greeting. His bright smile, sense of humor and genuine friendliness will be remembered but mostly especially his faith and love of family will be forever cherished.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Daly Van Bergen and his children Maribeth Yerks, Mariclare Lesniak and Matthew Van Bergen. He is also survived by his sons-in-law Gary and Bill and his daughter-in-law Heather. Norb was the loving grandfather of six and the great-grandfather of one - all held in high esteem.

He is also survived by his brother, Joseph, and his wife, Mary Ellen Van Bergen, and many nieces and nephews from New Jersey and Long Island, N.Y. Loved and admired, being in Uncle Norb’s company was always a joy.

Norb’s family wishes to acknowledge the loving care received by Norb from he dedicated care givers and other staff of the Geraldine L. Thompson Care Center. You are loved.

Visiting will be today from 4-8 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt. Burial will follow at the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norb’s name to St. Mark’s Holy Name Society.

Francis John Sullivan
Francis John Sullivan, 74, of Manasquan, died Thursday, Jan. 3 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune with his wife by his side. Francis was born and raised in New Brighton section Staten Island, N.Y. He graduated St. Paul’s Grammar School and St. Peter’s High School, both New Brighton. Francis attended Wagner College and graduated from Staten Island Community College in 1958. He was active in the Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968. Francis was employed at Willowbrook State School research unit, Staten Island and Western Electric Equipment Engineering, Newark.

Francis was a member of the New York City Fire Department from 1960 until 1996. At the time of his retirement, he was a Battalion Chief with Battalion 43, Coney Island, N.Y. Francis and his wife Diana moved to Eltingville section of Staten Island in 1963 where they raised their two daughters. Francis and his wife moved to Four Seasons, Manasquan, in 1997. While living on Staten Island, Francis was a communicant of Holy Child RC Church, Eltingville and after his move, St. Denis Church, Manasquan. He was a member of the Great Kills Swim club and was active in the tennis program, Fire Chief’s Association and the Fire Officers Association. Francis authored a book called “Adventures of the Pink Shovel and the Red Pail”. He enjoyed playing golf, being on his computer and Irish dancing.

Francis was predeceased by five brothers. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years Diana Rae [nee Lozier] Sullivan of Manasquan; two daughters Susan Diana Sullivan of Falls Church, Va., and Carolyn Rae Sullivan Conte and her husband Anthony of Stanford, Conn.; three grandchildren Katelyn Anne Conte, Jaclyn Rae Conte and Brooke Lyn Marie Conte. He is also survived by a brother Joseph Siep of Toms River.

Relatives and friends were invited to call Sunday at Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Martha’s Church, 3800 Herbertsville Road, Point Pleasant. Entombment followed at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to N.Y. Firefighters Burn Center Foundation, 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, N.Y. 10475 [online www.nyffburncenter.com] or to the United Methodist Church of Manasquan Sandy Relief Fund 23 Church Street, Manasquan, 08736.

Edward G. Tidaback
Edward G. Tidaback, 70, of Naples, Fla., with family in Sea Girt, died on Dec. 30. Ed was born in Summit. He is survived by his wife Diana, children Suzanne of Sea Girt, Carolyn of Bay Head, Christopher of Georgetown, Ky.; brother David and his wife Dianne of Mountainside; and grandchildren Meredith, Mackenzie, Cameron and Spencer.

Ed was a graduate of St. Benedicts Prep, Newark; University of Miami, and McAllister School, N.Y.

Before retiring to Naples, Fla., Ed worked for U.S. Label Corp. for over 30 years where he was vice president and on the Board of Directors.

Among the many sports Ed enjoyed, golf was his favorite. He was a member of the Stonebridge Golf Club, The Strand Golf Club, Naples, Fla., and Manasquan River Golf Club, Brielle.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in New Jersey to celebrate Ed’s Life.

Charles Weinstein
Charles Weinstein, 83 of Toms River and a former longtime resident of the West Belmar section of Wall Township, died Friday, Jan. 4, at Community Medical Center, Toms River.

Charles had been employed as a film coloring technician for Color Labs, Brooklyn, N.Y. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Charles was a proud graduate of Long Island University, he resided in West Belmar, Wall Township, for many years and then in Lakewood for 10 years before moving to Toms River seven years ago.

He was predeceased by his beloved parents Abraham and Esther Hiller Weinstein, and his sister and brother-in- law Cynthia and Jerry Weinerman. He is survived by his nephews and their wives Irwin and Terry Weinerman of Spring Lake Heights, and Harvey and Holly Weinerman of Tinton Falls, his great-nieces Carrie and Abby and his great-great nephew Brian.

In keeping with Charles wishes, a private burial will take place in the Weinstein Family plot alongside his beloved parents in New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall.

Eileen Bradley Sweeney
Eileen Bradley Sweeney, 80, of Sea Girt, died on Tuesday, Jan. 1, at the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. She was born on Nov. 26, 1932, the daughter of Peter and Catherine Bradley. Eileen was a resident of Scarsdale, N.Y., for 30 years, prior to moving permanently to the Jersey Shore 16 years ago.

Eileen is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, John A. Sweeney and her four loving daughters Mary Beth George, Kathy O’Halloran, Eileen Flagg, Megan Pacetti, and 10 beloved grandchildren. Also surviving Eileen is her brother John Bradley.

Eileen was an extraordinary wife, mother and “grandma”. She devoted her life to her family, and will be terribly missed. She will also be missed by her treasured friends up and down the East Coast, bridge partners, colleagues and patrons at the Sea Girt Library, where she volunteered.

The family received relatives and friends at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 in Wall. A celebration of Eileen’s life and a funeral Mass was held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt. Cremation will be private.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Shirley Mahoney Dieter
Shirley Mahoney Dieter, 86, of Brielle, formerly of Pleasantville, N.Y., died on Sunday, Jan. 6, at Care One Care Center in Wall. She was born in Armonk, N.Y., and in 1943, married Norman Dieter. They resided in Pleasantville most of their lives where she was very active in the Women’s Contemporary Club.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sharon Coppola of Spring Lake, her son, Craig Dieter of Pleasantville, N.Y., her son, Scott Dieter of Mamaroneck, N.Y., 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Cremation will be private. A memorial service at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Pleasantville will be scheduled at a later date. Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at www.lls.org in memory of Shirley Mahoney Dieter.

Betty L. Schoppe
Betty L. Schoppe, 77, of Jackson, died Thursday, Feb. 28, at Centra State Medical Center in Freehold.

She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan, where her husband, Bill has served as the church sexton for many years.

Born in Summit, she lived in Point Pleasant, before moving to Jackson 10 years ago.

Mrs. Schoppe was a secretary for the Hebb Spring Company in Newark. She was past matron of the Eastern Star, Chapter 143 in Wall and was a graduate of Howard Seminary in West Bridgewater, Mass.

Mrs. Schoppe is survived by her husband of over 55 years, William and is also survived by three sons, William R. of Jackson, Mark Allen of Brick and Jonathon Paul of Plainsboro; one daughter, Susan Rose Whalen of Beaver Falls, Pa., formerly of Manasquan; two nieces, Patricia Ann of Maine and Lori Lee of N.Y.; and a cousin, Anne Dietlein of Jackson; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Manasquan. The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 6 Osborn Avenue, Manasquan, NJ 08736.

Robert A. Briant, Sr.
Robert A. Briant, Sr., 76, of Point Pleasant, with family in Manasquan and Wall, died on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He is survived by two sons Robert A. Briant, Jr. and his wife Deborah of Manasquan, and Michael Thomas Briant and his wife Donna of Wall; one daughter Joanne B. Khammar and her husband Issam of Manasquan.

Born in North Plainfield, Robert lived in South Plainfield and Manasquan prior to moving to Point Pleasant 19 years ago. He was the C.E.O. of Utility and Transportation Contractors Association, Wall, for 33 years before retiring in 2006. Subsequently he continued to work as a consultant for UTCA.

Robert was a parishioner of Sacred Heart RC Church, Bay Head. He was chairman of the National Clean Water Construction Coalition. Robert also served as chairman of the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust for 10 years while concurrently serving as its treasurer. He was member of the Construction Writers Association.

Robert was an All-State basketball and baseball player for North Plainfield High. He played professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers Organization.

Robert is also survived by his wife of 54 years, Carole Briant [nee Semenza]; one brother Charles Briant of Virigina; two sisters Marianne Zanowic of Florida and Charlene DeLaurentis of Virginia Beach; and six grandchildren: Colin, Thomas, Katherine, Joseph, Hannah and Michael.

Arrangements are being handled by Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach. Interment occurred in Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s name can be made to The Ocean Medical Foundation, 425 Jack Martin Blvd., Brick. Please note Robert’s name on the donation.
