Inge M. Scheurer
Inge [néße Enke] M. Scheurer, 90, of Spring Lake Heights, died Nov. 13 at her residence, the Wexford of Spring Lake.

She was born in Ohligs, Germany on Jan. 28, 1920. She came to America with her family in 1928. She grew up in Newark and raised her own family in Bloomfield. She then relocated to Spring Lake Heights. She was devoted to and loved by her children, grandchildren.

Inge was predeceased by her loving husband, Paul R. Scheurer, grandson, John Scott Larkin, and great granddaughter, Kiera Lynn Larkin.

Surviving is her sister, Margaret Quinlan, of Red Hill, Pa., daughter, Barbara Larkin and her husband, John, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Judith Delman, of Killington, Vt., Katherine M. Levy and her husband, Howard, of Spring Lake, and son, Robert R. Scheurer and his wife, Barbara, of Marshalls Creek, Pa., eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Inge retired after 32 years working for Macy’s Department Store, ending her career in Toms River, where she was the manager of infants and toddlers. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Spring Lake, South Monmouth Seniors, United Methodist Women, Red Hat Society, and a quilter with the quilters of United Methodist Church of Manasquan. She also volunteered at the MCOSS, of Manasquan.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements.

It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in her memory to the United Methodist Church of Spring Lake, 4th and West Lake, Spring Lake, 07762.

Frank Maurice Manuel
Frank Maurice Manuel, 86, of Spring Lake Heights died on Friday Nov. 12, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune.

Mr. Manuel retired as a 1st Grade Fireman with the New York City Fire Department after 31 years of dedicated service.

He was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was the son of the late Capt. John F. Manuel, USMM and his beloved wife, the late Gwendoline L. [née] Darrell, of Brooklyn, N.Y. via Turks Island, B.W.I.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn until he moved to Spring Lake Heights permanently after his retirement in 1982.

He served at St. Andrew’s as an acolyte, and he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 288 and after WWII, a committee member of Troop 288 Explorers.

He was a graduate of Manual Training High School in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1943 to 1944. Then, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. He participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, and the occupation of Japan and China.

He was a former member of VFW Post 4411 in Brooklyn, Manasquan VFW Post 1838, American Legion Post 930, Iwo Jima Survivor Association, Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534, and the Spring Lake Heights Recreation Committee.

Mr. Manuel was predeceased by his companion and dear friend of 40 years, Anne Brearley, and his sister, Gwendoline Johnston.

He is survived by a brother, Arthur J. Manuel, sister-in-law, Julie, 10 nieces and nephews, 12 grandnieces and nephews and four great-grandnieces and nephew.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements.

Burial was in the Wall United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Crippled Childrens Fund of the Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534, 17 Stockton Lake Boulevard, Manasquan, 08736.

William E. Clinch
William E. Clinch, 88 of Brielle, passed away Monday Nov. 15 at Liberty Royal Rehabilitation Center, Tinton Falls, with his wife by his side. William was born and raised in Lakewood and moved to Brielle 57 years ago. He was a graduate of Lakewood High School, in 1940. William was a Seabee in the U.S. Navy serving during WWII.

William was a member of Carpenter’s Union Local 2250 for over 45 years. William was a charter member and organizer of the Brielle First Aid Squad, Scout Master of Troop 63, and a member of the American Legion Post 432, Spring Lake.

Bill was predeceased by his first wife of almost 30 years, Bernice Clinch.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Karen Clinch, of Brielle; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William M. Clinch of Madawaska, ME and Raymond and Carol Clinch, of Toms River.

He is also survived by three grandchildren, Melanie Clinch, Dr. Maureen Clinch-Lyons and Kevin Clinch and four great-grandchildren.

The Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements.

A funeral service will be held at funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18.

Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle. In lieu flowers donations may be made to the family.

John J. Tatulli
John J. Tatulli, 87, of Manasquan, passed away Sunday at home.

Born in Jersey City, he lived there most of his life. John owned and operated Tatulli Coal & Oil, in Jersey City, for over 30 years. Afterwards, he was a plumber for the Board of Education, School No. 3 in Jersey City, before retiring to Manasquan 17 years ago.

He was predeceased by his son, Frank, in 2003, and is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Jennie, two sons, Joseph, of Old Bridge and John, of Plainsboro, a daughter, Julia Jones, of Burlington, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements.

A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, 90 Union Ave Manasquan.

Burial will follow at Holy Name Cemetery, 823 West Side Ave., Jersey City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Meridian Health Affiliated Foundation 1345 Campus Parkway Suite, A2, Neptune, 07753 or online at oceanmedicalcenter.com under “Ways To Give- Meridian At Home Hospice.

Frederick W. Herman
Frederick W. Herman, 75, of Brielle, died Thursday, Nov. 11 at his home.

Born in Peekskill, N.Y., he summered in Manasquan all his life, before moving to Brielle 44 years ago.

Mr. Herman was the head of the language department and taught German at Brick High School. He later was vice principal at Brick Memorial for 32 years before retiring in 1992. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a member of St. Denis RC Church, in Manasquan, past member of the Brielle Fire Department and the Brielle Board of Education.

Mr. Herman is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret “Peg” [née Bekus] and is also survived by one son, Andy, of Brielle, two daughters, Elizabeth McFarland, of Washington Township and Margaret “Peg” Pierciey, of Brielle, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of the arrangements.

Entombment was held at Holmdel Cemetery, in Holmdel.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Childrens Hospital or Deborah Hospital.

George Allen Woolley, Jr.
George Allen Woolley, Jr., 71 of Manasquan passed away at his home on Thursday, Nov. 11.

George was born in Wayside and lived in the shore area most of his life. He lived in Point Pleasant Borough for 23 years and Onancock, Va., for five years before moving back to Manasquan, in 1995. George worked as an auto mechanic for 20 years at Vince Auto Repair, Brick and Winter Yacht Basin, also in Brick, as a mechanic and parts manager retiring in 2005. George was an exempt firefighter for Point Pleasant Boro Company No. 2. He was owner and operator of AAA Tree Service, in Point Pleasant, for many years. George was an avid hunter, enjoyed boat racing, mile auto drag racing, boating and fishing. He enjoyed the companionship he had with his two dogs, Lucy and Jax.

George was predeceased by his parents George, Sr. and Gladys Woolley, two sisters, Betty Longo and Gloria Basile DeOliveira, and a brother, Sidney Woolley.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marybeth Dillon Woolley, of Manasquan; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine and Vinny O’Rourke and Cindy and Bill Dikun, both of Point Pleasant Boro. He is also survived by two grandsons, Ryan and Tyler O’Rourke; two nephews and their spouse James and Anne Longo, Michael and Ellen Basile.

The Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Manasquan First Aid, 64 Broad Street, Manasquan, 08736 or Point Pleasant Boro Fire Company No. 2, 1206 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant Boro, 08742.

Dr. Arthur Nelson, Jr.
Beloved physical therapy educator and researcher, Dr. Arthur Nelson Jr. PT, PhD, and FAPTA, of Neptune, with family in Manasquan, died on Sunday, Nov. 7 surrounded by his family after a longtime illness. He was 78.

Dr. Nelson was born on Staten Island in 1932 to Margot and Arthur Nelson, Sr., the second of four children.

Nelson discovered a passion for healing while lifeguarding at Boy Scout camp where he taught a young boy whose arm had been paralyzed by polio how to swim. He chartered a distinguished international career that spanned the growing academic and clinical approaches to physical therapy.

As a clinician, he spent two years in the U.S. Public Health Service and developed the first physical therapy program at St. Vincent’s Medical Center on Staten Island, eventually opening his own private practice in 1984.

Dr. Nelson even lent a healing hand to composer Irving Berlin and chef and television personality Julia Child.

A pioneering researcher, Nelson also developed the GAITRite System, a computerized method of measuring footfalls still used today around the world.

Academically, he earned a Ph.D. from New York University and in 1970 became chairman of the physical therapy program at his alma mater where he started one of the first doctoral programs in the field.

He was named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association, in 1990. Upon his retirement from NYU in 1994, Dr. Nelson accepted a position on the faculty at The College of Staten Island. He was a prolific contributor to research publications and much sought-after lecturer.

As an educator, he was known for drawing symmetrical diagrams of the human nervous system with both hands simultaneously.

His artistic talents extended to a life-long love of painting and woodcarving.

Dr. Nelson was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Jacqueline M. Nelson, and their son, Paul.

He is survived by his wife Ardeth, whom he married in 2002; his daughter, the Rev. Susan Nelson-Colaneri, her husband, Joseph and daughter, Katie; his son, James Nelson, his wife, Deborah, their daughters, Kari, Tonya and Krysta and their son, Erik; his sister, Adrienne Odegard and two brothers, Peter and Roger Nelson and their families. He is also survived by Ardeth’s daughter, Susan Stolzenthaler and her sons, Blaine, Davis and Keith Logan, and their families, including nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Interment was private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the NYU Physical Therapy Support Fund [noted for the “Arthur J. Nelson Award and Lab” in the memo section of the check], New York University, Department of Physical Therapy, 380 2nd Ave., 4th Floor, New York, NY 10010.

Donations may also be sent to the “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” or the “Capital Campaign Fund” at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Manasquan.

Arrangements were by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.
