William A. Smock Jr.
William A. Smock Jr., “Billy, ” to all who knew and loved him, formerly of Wall, passed away suddenly Sunday, Nov. 14, at his home.

Born in Neptune, he had lived in Wall, Belmar, and Point Pleasant before moving to Brick. He graduated from Point Pleasant Boro High School in 2000 and was a member of the wrestling team.

Billy was employed in the Electronic Security Integration Field for the past decade where he worked on many flagship projects. He was a member of ASIS [American Society for Industrial Security] and the NFPA.

He is survived by his beloved parents, William A. and Lois Wood Smock, of Brick, his wife, Kaitlin McKelvey Smock, of Point Pleasant, his sister, Cynthia Freschi and husband, Ronald, of Brick and their daughter, his beloved niece, Lexy, his sister, Laurie Smock Jackson and husband, Daniel, of Bayville, many aunts, uncles and cousins, friends and his three dogs, Onyx, Dylan, and Max, all of whom he loved dearly.

Billy will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. His bright smile will stay in our hearts forever … until we meet again.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd., Brick followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation, 730 Lynnwood Ave., Brick, 08723.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Middletown.

William J. Naperski
William J. “Captain Bill” Naperski, 72, of Brielle, passed away suddenly on Monday, Nov. 15.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Bill lived in New Jersey and Florida for most of his life.

Captain Bill worked as a boat captain for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was an avid fisherman.

He was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Josephine Naperski.

Surviving are his brother, David Naperski and his wife, Laurie, of Point Pleasant; his niece, Tina Naperski; his nephew, Nicholas Naperski; and his grandniece, Becca, and grandnephew, Jake.

A memorial visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19 at the Pable - Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road.

Edward J. Rowland, Sr.
Edward J. Rowland, Sr., 84, of Wall Township, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, after a long illness.

A former New Jersey State Trooper, Mr. Rowland also proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII.

Born in Jersey City, Mr. Rowland grew up at the shore and attended Asbury Park High School. An avid bowler and fisherman, Mr. Rowland settled in Wall Township where he raised his family.

Mr. Rowland was predeceased by his wife, Jane Dangler Rowland, two sons, Lance and Edward J. Rowland Jr., and one grandson, Raymond Guarino. Surviving are three sons, Mark and his wife Terri of Wichita, Kansas; James and his wife Missy of Wall; and Kevin and his wife Trish of Brick and two daughters, Lorie Langridge and her fiancé Joe Brown of Jackson and Debbie Rowland, of Kingsport, Tenn. Rowland is also survived by his grandchildren Tippi-Marie Bernstel, John, Courtney, Lauren, Shaena, Aaron and Jesse Rowland and Jessica Reyna as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Emily Anna Rowland and Hayden Ira Marsh.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the New Jersey Former Troopers Association. NJFTA, 1675 Whitehorse-Mercerville Rd., Suite 103, Hamilton, NJ 08619-3824.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

John J. Horan
John J. Horan, of Sea Girt, died on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 22, of natural causes. He was 90 years old.

Mr. Horan served as chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Merck & Co., Inc., from 1976 to 1985. By the end of his tenure, Merck had grown into the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, and would soon become the most admired company in America on Fortune magazine’s well-known list. Mr. Horan was instrumental in supporting the Merck research that led to the development of a medicine to help prevent and treat the devastating tropical disease known as river blindness, and a long running partnership with the Carter Center, which has been a pioneering model for governmental and business cooperation in humanitarian efforts in developing nations. Upon his retirement as Merck’s CEO, Mr. Horan continued to serve as a member of the board of directors and as its vice chairman until 1993. He had earlier served as the company’s president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Horan received an A.B. degree from Manhattan College in 1940 and a J.D. degree from Columbia University Law School in 1946. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree at the 127th Commencement of Manhattan College in 1978. Mr. Horan was an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, during World War II, serving with the United States Navy Amphibious Forces. He saw heavy action in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Normandy. His was among the lead ships as part of the Allied Invasion into the Salerno, Italy beachhead. Later, as communications officer on the staff of Admiral John Wilkes, Mr. Horan helped deliver the orders that led to the launch of the Normandy invasion, the largest amphibious operation in history. After the war, he was associated with the law firm of Nims, Verdi and Martin in New York.

In 1952, Mr. Horan joined the Legal Department of Merck & Co., Inc. and rose steadily: serving successively as general counsel, director of public relations, director of research administration, director of corporate planning, and president of Merck Sharp and Dohme.

Following his retirement from management at Merck, Horan played an active role in the development of the biotech industry, serving as chairman of the board of Myriad Laboratories, chairman of Atrix Laboratories, and director of Celgene Laboratories.

Mr. Horan’s corporate directorships included: General Motors Corporation, NCR Corporation, JP Morgan & Co. Inc., and Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York, and the Burlington Industries, Inc. While at Merck, he was also chairman of the board for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association and a member of the Business Roundtable.

His civic work included serving as a trustee for The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and as a board member of the United Negro College Fund. Mr. Horan did volunteer work on President Reagan’s Private Sector Survey on Cost Control, where he was chairman of the Task Force on the Army, and the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Efficiency in the Operation of the Courts, where he was chairman of the Committee on Surrogates. His awards for public service include: “The George Champion Award” from Dr. Leon Sullivan’s Opportunities Industrialization Center of America, the De La Salle Medal from Manhattan College, and the Distinguished Service Award from the United Negro College Fund.

Mr. Horan is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Julia Fitzgerald, and his four children: daughter Mary Alice Ryan and husband John Ryan of Spring Lake; son Thomas and wife Katharine Jacobs of Hoboken; son John Horan Jr. and wife Patricia, of Sea Girt; son David and wife Michele, of Armonk, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister Mary Smith of Lakewood; brother Eugene Horan of Monroe, and sister Florence and husband Tom Keating of Wall.

A viewing will be held at O’Brien’s Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, 07719 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27. A Mass will be offered at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt, NJ, 08750, on Friday, Jan. 28 at 9:30 a.m.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Johns Hopkins University, c/o Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 436, Baltimore, MD 21201, with a note indicating that the donation is in memory of John J. Horan for the support of Dr. Jack Richford’s research in the treatment and cure of Multiple Sclerosis.

Edward L. Perrin, Sr.
Edward L. Perrin Sr., 73, of Sea Girt passed away Thursday, Jan. 20 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Born and raised in New York, he had lived in Park Ridge, and then in Princeton Junction before moving to Sea Girt in 1991.

He was a graduate of Manhattan College, receiving his B.B.A. and MS; he was also a member of the Manhattan College Alumni Association, Bergen County Chapter, serving as the treasurer. He was a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club and the Sea View Country Club, Galloway Township, and had been very active in the Park Ridge Athletic Association, serving as a board member.

He was a self-employed Certified Public Accountant, and had worked for Price Waterhouse/Coopers, Princeton, the NJ Hospital Association, Princeton Junction, and BlueCross of Newark. He was a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, the NJ State Society of CPAs, the Healthcare Financial Management Association, NJ Chapter.

Edward was predeceased by his father, Leonard S., mother, Catherine Slattery Perrin, and his dear daughter, Christine Perrin, in 2008.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years Rita Sparrow Perrin, his son Edward L. Perrin Jr. of Sea Girt, his daughter Marianne Weir and her husband Chris of Oceanport, his sister Virginia Favorito and husband Barney of Oradell and his 2 grandsons Stephen and Joseph Weir.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Entombment was in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers the family requests donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Central Jersey Chapter, 740 Broad St., Shrewsbury, NJ 07702 . Kathryn A. Dieckmann Beckmann
Kathryn A. Dieckmann Beckmann, 68, of Sea Girt, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

Born in Passaic, to the late Edward and Gertrude Dieckmann, she had lived in Manasquan Park before moving to Sea Girt in 1991. In the past 4 and one half years, Kathy has lived in assisted living facilities, Sunrise in Lincroft and Brick, now the Worthington.

Mrs. Beckmann was a registered nurse and had worked at Point Pleasant Hospital until retiring in 1989. She was devoted parishioner of Saint Uriel the Archangel Episcopal Church, Sea Girt.

She was predeceased by her son, Darren and by her brother, Frederick Dieckmann.

Surviving are her beloved husband Bruce; two sons, Barrett and Daniel, both of Bayville; and her sister, Nancy Scheurer and her husband Philip of Knoxville, Tenn.

The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

As an expression of sympathy donations made in her memory to either Saint Uriel the Archangel Church, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, would be appreciated.

Rose Bianchi
Rose [Mangini] Bianchi, 91, a longtime resident of Spring Lake Heights, passed away on Monday, Jan. 24.

She was born and raised in Hoboken and graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Jersey City.

She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a Captain during World War II and was stationed in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. After the service, she was employed as an RN Supervisor at Point Pleasant Hospital and the Medical Center of Ocean County, retiring in 1992.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois Ann Bianchi, Spring Lake Heights, and Rosemarie and her husband, Robert Horre’, Allenwood, two grandchildren, Robert Jr. and Michele Horre’, Allenwood, and a sister, Philomena Mangini, of Hoboken.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rose’s name to the charity of your choice.

Nancy M. Tully Henry
Nancy M. Tully Henry, 53, of Point Pleasant, with family in Spring Lake, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Jan. 20 at her home.

Born in Elizabeth, she was formerly of Union, and has lived in Point Pleasant for thirty-two years.

Nancy was a graduate of Union High School and Union County College with a nursing assistant degree.

She was active with Point Pleasant Borough High School Booster Athletics as well as the Spring Lake School of Dance. An avid animal lover, Nancy loved flowers and landscaping.

Daughter of the late William C. Tully, Nancyis survived by her beloved husband of thirty-two years, Glenn P. Henry; two sons, Sean Patrick Henry and his wife Shelley of Brick and Timothy William Henry of Boca Raton, Fla.; her mother, Ann Q. Tully of Spring Lake; her sister, Patricia Tully Osborn and her husband Jeffrey of Spring Lake; her mother-in-law, Mary C. Henry of Brick; and many dear friends.

The Pable - Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant was in charge of arrangements. Cremation was held privately.

As an expression of sympathy, donations made to the Nancy M. Henry Scholarship Fund, c/o Point Pleasant Borough Board of Education, 2100 Panther Path, Point Pleasant, 08742 would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Thomas L. Tallon
Thomas L. Tallon, DDS, “Doc, ” age 95, of Manasquan, passed away at home on Thursday, Jan. 20.

He was a retired dentist maintaining a private practice in Woodbridge and Linden for over 65 years. A graduate of Linden High School, Doc sang in the chorus and was the high school football quarterback. He attended Union Junior College, Trenton State College, and received a degree in dental surgery from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1942. “Doc” was a proud Navy Marine Corps veteran serving in World War II as a lieutenant commander. He was a member of the Linden Lions Club and volunteered at the Woodbridge Dental Health Center. A member of Manasquan VFW Post 1838, “Doc” served as the Honorary VFW Marshall of the 2006 Manasquan Memorial Day Parade. He was also a lifetime Member of the Manasquan Fishing Club, and a member of the Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534. “Doc” enjoyed dancing, hunting and fishing. He also loved swimming each day off the beach in Manasquan from May until November. He will be remembered as one who opened his home to all in friendship on the beachfront in Manasquan.

“Doc” was predeceased by his wife, Nancie Wight, his brother Wilfred, and his sister Lucille Ilg.

Surviving are his daughters Elizabeth and her husband Keith Wohltman, Patricia and her husband Gary Walsh, Margaret Tallon, and Laurie and her husband Richard Brandon. He was also blessed with six grandchildren: Sean and Devon Wohltman, Colleen Walsh Cardella and Amanda Walsh, and Richard and Kelsey Brandon. Surviving also are nephews Philip Tallon, Thomas Ilg, Charles King, James Wight. Harry Wight, William Wight and Tracy Wight, and nieces Judith Staton, Joan Kornmeyer, Carol King, Barbara Smoot, Suzanne Garrod and Susan Hutler.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date where family and friends will be invited to share their best memories of “Doc.”
