Marion S. Leahy
Marion Meer Smith Leahy, 86, formerly of Spring Lake, died peacefully at Van Duyn Home at 5:03 a.m. on Jan. 20.

Her loving husband of 63 years, William Duncan Leahy and her daughter, Ellen Leahy were with her.

She is also survived by her four sons, who are scattered around the US: William D. Leahy Jr. [Jacqueline], Michael P. Leahy [Vicki], Timothy J. Leahy [Carolyn] and Stephen J. Leahy [Shawn]; Grandchildren Kelly Whitney [Evan], Heather Dixon [Mark], Megan Leahy, Lauren Leahy, Joseph Leahy, Dana Leahy. Great grandchildren are Zak Dixon, Caleb Dixon and Tabitha Whitney. She also leaves behind many friends, nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond, and her kitty, Patrick.

She is predeceased by her cousins Cassie Mazza and Mike Bowen, her mother Helen Meer Smith, who came to America through Ellis Island and the couple that raised her, Margaret and Patrick McCrory. Her extended family still holds a farm in the West of Ireland.

Marion was born in New York City, then moved to Spring Lake. She attended Manasquan High School and Traphagen School of Fashion in Manhattan, where she studied illustration.

She married William D. Leahy of Sea Girt at St. Catherine’s Church in Spring Lake on Nov. 29, 1948.

Bill worked for RCA and they were transferred around the country, moving from Jersey to California, back to Jersey, then to Duxbury, Mass. and finally to Skaneateles, N.Y.

She loved to cook, write poetry, laugh, swim, arrange flowers, paint, collect sea shells and sea glass, think, debate, manage money, fish, bike, play golf, sail and travel. She was a library enthusiast and an adventurous homemaker.

While her children were young, she periodically worked in market research. Then when her nest emptied, she worked in retail at the Bookie [bookstore], Skaneateles, as a caterer and as the bread lady at several farmer’s markets. She also developed a line of flavored cheesecakes, called Mother Leahy’s Cheesecakes that were carried in several of Syracuse’s busiest restaurants in the 1970s and 80s. Her last performance was as the Meals and Wheels coordinator in Skaneateles.

A lifelong learner, she studied French, accounting and creative writing in her 60s. She once said, life is so exciting because everyday there is something new to learn. Not only did she devour information, but was able to retain it, and recall it, as she had a photographic memory.

She was a friend to all, creating a safe-house for her family and their friends, where there was always good food and laughter. She didn’t mind playing the straight-man, but was known for an occasional zinger.

Introduced to Upstate Medical Center’s anatomical giving program [Syracuse], she and Bill donated their bodies [at the time of death] for the purpose of scientific research.

Early in the 21st century, Marion was diagnosed with an inoperable aneurism in the front right lobe of her brain, this wreaked havoc on her brain’s processing. She handled this illness as she did every obstacle in her life, taking it one day at a time and adjusting accordingly, never entirely losing her sense of humor. In her decline, her husband Bill assisted her in all things great and small. Shortly before her death, she entered Van Duyn, where Bill also became a regular fixture at her bedside. In turn, her love for her husband never wavered.

A celebration of her life is planned for this spring in Skaneateles, with a separate memorial service planned on the Jersey Shore this summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Skaneateles Library, Seymour Library in Auburn or SAVES Ambulance Service in Skaneateles, who came to her rescue many times.

Thomas McDonough
Neptune City resident Thomas E. “Chief” McDonough passed away at home in Neptune City with his family by his side on Sunday, Feb. 25. He will be laid to rest in Wall.

Tom was born and raised in Hoboken. He moved to Jersey City where he raised his family with his wife, Joan, and retired to Neptune City in 1993.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served as a Signalman in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters and received an Honorable Discharge in May 1946.

He was appointed to the Hoboken Police Department as a Patrolman in June 1946 at the age of 19 where he proudly worked alongside his father, William “Big Bill” McDonough. In 1950, he was appointed to the Hudson County Boulevard Police Department which later merged with the Hudson County Police Department.

He rose through the ranks and in 1972 was promoted to Chief of Police, the rank he held until his retirement in 1980. Subsequent to that he was employed in the private sector as Manager of Internal Security by the Depository Trust Company, New York City and retired at age 66.

Second to none was the love he shared with his wife, Joan, his children and grandchildren. Everyday was a great day in Tom’s life. He was passionate about all things Notre Dame, his Irish heritage, the beach, music and reading.

He was a historian of boxing and he most enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Throughout his life and career, Tom touched people young and old. He usually had a story that could brighten anyone’s day.
