Dietrich Schulze, 98
Dietrich Schulze, 98, of Union died on Wednesday, June 14, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Lintig, Germany, he came to the United States in 1955. He had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Union 16 years ago.
Mr. Schulze was a self-employed farmer.
He was a member of the Deutscher Club in Clark and the Von Steuben Society of America in New York City.
He was predeceased by his wife, Meta Boker Schulze, and by a daughter, Hanna Blake.
Surviving are three sons, Hans Schulze, Henry Schulze and Richard Schulze; three daughters, Paula Kennedy, Liesa Sohl and Annemarie Betyeman; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 19, at Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield. Interment took place in the Readington Reformed Church Cemetery in Readington Township.

Carol G. Matko, 83
Chemical Engineer; Prominent Member of Masonic Lodge
Carol George Matko, 83, of Mountainside died on Friday, June 23, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Mountainside for 40 years.
Mr. Matko, a chemical engineer, had been plant manager at Reichhold Chemicals Company of Houston, Tex. and project engineer for Reichhold Chemicals Company of Elizabeth.
He had been a member of the Board of Directors of Emerald Savings and Loan of Elizabeth and the City Federal Bank of Linden.
A Mason for 54 years, he was Past Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge No. 33 of Elizabeth, now Loyalty Lodge No. 33 of Union, where he was a 32nd degree Mason.
He had also been a member of the Knights Templar.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Anna Matko; two daughters, Susan Matko Greenwood and Elizabeth Matko Stanton; a son, George John Matko, and five grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, June 26, in the Union Funeral Home Lytwyn & Lytwyn in Union.

Beverly Reid, 75
Hartridge School Alum; Past President of Plainfield Garden Club
Beverly Paulson Reid, 75, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, June 19, 2000 at home.
Born in Los Angeles, the daughter of Dr. Arch Martin Paulson and Mabel Loizeaux Paulson, she had lived in Plainfield and Summit before moving to Scotch Plains 47 years ago.
Mrs. Reid was a Past President of the Plainfield Garden Club and a former trustee of the Plainfield Historical Society.
She was a graduate of the Hartridge School in Plainfield and Ogontz Junior College in Rydell, Pa.
Surviving are her husband, Bruce A. Reid; two daughters, Wendy Andrews and Helen Reid Kelly, and a son, Bruce A. Reid, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.. tomorrow, Friday, June 30, at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Stonework Fund of Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, 716 Watchung Avenue, Plainfield, 07060.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Delores P. Toresco
Was Bookkeeper At Toyota Dealership for 20 Years
Delores P. Toresco of Warren died on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 in St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Plainfield and Scotch Plains before moving to Warren in 1976.
Mrs. Toresco had been a bookkeeper with Dom’s Toyota in North Plainfield for 20 years before retiring in 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra A. Waldron; three stepdaughters, Jennifer Amorosa, Tracy Ginsburg and Patricia Galasso; a stepson, Donald M. Toresco; two sisters, Eleanor Haddon and Helen Etling; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Monday, June 26, in St. Mary’s Stony Hill Church in Watchung, following the funeral from the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Michael A. Barattucci, Sr., 65
Owned Plumbing Company in Scotch Plains
Michael A. Barattucci, Sr., 65, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, June 22, 2000 at Manor Care Health Services in Mountainside.
Born in Plainfield, he was a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains. Mr. Barattucci had been the owner of Barattucci Plumbing in Scotch Plains before retiring in 1998.
He was formerly employed by Di Francesco Plumbing in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Millwater Barattucci; a son, Michael A. Barattucci, Jr. of Piscataway; a daughter, Sherry Tomasso of Parsippany; a brother, Anthony Barattucci; two sisters, Antoinette Reisinger and Rosemarie Hoyt, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 26, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment followed at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 United States Highway No. 1, North Brunswick, 089024301.

Gertrud Schundler, 77
Active Member Of Presbyterian Church in Westfield
Gertrud Droop Schundler, 77, of Basking Ridge, formerly of Westfield, died on Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Lingen (EMS), Germany, she had lived there until she was 17. Upon coming to the United States, she settled in Madison. She later lived in Chatham, Colonia, Westfield and Bedminster prior to moving to Basking Ridge.
Mrs. Schundler was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, where she was a member of The Fifth Wheel and The Sewing Circle. She was also a member of the Clark German Club.
She was predeceased by her hus band of 54 years, Hans Otto Schundler, in 1996, and by a son, Mark F. Schundler, and an adopted daughter, Johanna Schundler.
Surviving are seven sons, Russell D. Schundler and Robert Jeffrey Schundler, both of Westfield; Peter O. Schundler of Basking Ridge, Bruce E. Schundler and R. Kim Schundler, both of Califon, Michael F. Schundler of Weston, Fla. and Mayor Bret D. Schundler of Jersey City; a daughter, Kristin A. Schundler of Bedminster; a brother, Dr. Friedel Droop of Lingen, and 22 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 25, at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Interment followed at The Revolutionary Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Box E 1275 York Avenue, New York, 10021, or to the Chop Point School, 420 Chop Point Road, Woolwich, Me., 04579.

Loretta Hengst, 98
Loretta Hedtkamp Hengst, 98, of Westfield died on Thursday, June 15, 2000 at home.
Born in St. Louis, Mo., she had lived in Watchung before relocating to Westfield in 1958.
Mrs. Hengst was a volunteer nurse’s aide at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield and also served as a volunteer with Mobile Meals in Westfield.
She was a communicant of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter Spring, in 1956, and by her second husband, Edgar Hengst, in 1981.
Surviving are several nieces, a step-granddaughter, and a step-great-granddaughter.
A Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, June 23, at the Holy Trinity Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson Street, Westfield, 07090.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Pasquale and Josephine Altera
Couple Had Resided in Fanwood Since 1967
Pasquale Altera, 80, and his wife, Josephine Altera, 69, of Fanwood died last weekend at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Both born in Pescopagano, Italy, Mr. and Mrs. Altera came to the United States in 1959 and had lived in Plainfield before moving to Fanwood in 1967.
Mr. Altera, who died on Sunday, June 25, 2000 had been a mason with Union Local No. 34 of Westfield for 25 years before retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the Pescopagano Social Club of East Orange.
Mrs. Altera, who died on Saturday, June 24, 2000 was a seamstress at various locations in New Jersey.
Surviving are a son, Frank Altera; two daughters, Jo A. Slavin and Angela L. Robinson, and five grandchildren.
Mr. Altera is also survived by two brothers, Andrea Altera and Francesco Altera, and a sister, Lucrezia Roselli.
Mrs. Altera is survived by three sisters, Antoninette Toglia, Gerardina Capasso and Linda Glew.
A Mass for the couple will be offered at 10 a.m.. tomorrow, Friday, June 30, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, following the funeral from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

George Felegy, 75
Shop Supervisor; Army Veteran Received Purple Heart
George Felegy, 75, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, June 19, 2000 in the Clark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clark.
Born in Atlasburg, Pa., he had lived in Newark before relocating to Scotch Plains in 1956.
Mr. Felegy had been a shop supervisor for the Victory Engineering Company in Springfield for more than 20 years before retiring in 1990.
He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Sergeant First Class and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife, Gail Felegy; three daughters, Dorthea Renna, Diana Reboiro and Lisa Kaznowski; two sons, James Felegy and John Felegy; a brother, Paul Felegy; two sisters, Mary Lapkowicz and Veronica Kelly, and four grandchildren.
Services were held on Thursday, June 22, in the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Jadwiga Redo Bruks, 82
Had Served With Polish Army in World War II
Jadwiga Redo Bruks, 82, of Westfield died on Sunday, June 25, 2000 at home.
Born in Poland, she had lived in Perth Amboy from 1951 until moving to Westfield in 1975.
During the early stages of World War II, she had been displaced from Poland by the Russian Army and spent two years in Siberia.
Mrs. Bruks served with the Polish Army Second Corps in Italy from 1942 to 1947 and earned several commendations from both the Polish Army and the allied forces for her service.
She was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in Perth Amboy.
Mrs. Bruks was also a member of the Polish American Congress, the Polish Army Veterans of World War II Post No. 40 in Perth Amboy, the Polish Army Veterans Post No. 208 in South River and the United Poles in America, Perth Amboy. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Feliks Bruks; two sons, Andrej Bruks of San Francisco and Zbigniew Bruks of Westfield, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9: 30 a.m.. today, Thursday, June 29, from the Skrocki Memorial Home in Perth Amboy, followed by a 10 a.m.. Funeral Mass at St. Stephen’s Church.
Interment will be at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery in Doylestown, Pa.
