Delphine “Del” Murdico

Mrs. Murdico, 95, of Little Silver, died Sept. 5 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, she had been a resident of Little Silver for the past 48 years. Mrs. Murdico was a beautician at various salons in the Red Bank and Fair Haven area for several years before her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Mrs. Murdico was predeceased by her husband, Angelo J. Murdico; and six siblings. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Ted Sarn of Little Silver; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements are by the John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank 07701.

Helen Marie Smith

Mrs. Smith, 73, of Red Bank, died Sept. 5 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she moved to Red Bank four years ago. Before her retirement, Mrs. Smith was a child care provider at Gill Hodges Lanes, Brooklyn, for 26 years. She was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, and a former communicant of Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church, Brooklyn. Mrs. Smith is survived her husband, Charles Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Alana Smith of Brooklyn; a daughter and son-in-law, Maura and Edward Thorp of Fair Haven; two brothers, Terence Conaty of East Hampton, N.Y., and James Conaty of Dallas; seven sisters, Kathleen Tanasi of Southington, Conn., Patricia Conaty of New Milford, Rita McCann of Orlando, Fla., Joan Arendt of Houston, Veronica Moran of Bergenfield, and Barbara Kirwan and Sheila Gorman, both of Dumont; and five grandchildren. A funeral gathering will be held Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial will be at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.

Mary Amelia Rowan Meehan

Mrs. Meehan, 94, of Rumson, died Aug. 30 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, she resided in Rumson the past 60 years. She was the owner and operator of a local business for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Raymond Meehan; a brother, Edward W. Rowan; and a sister, Elizabeth M. Neale. She is survived by five children, Charles R. Meehan of Shrewsbury; Roanne C. Shriver of Rumson; Mary Adele G. Meehan of Wilmington, Del.; Martha M. Moon of Medfield, Mass.; and Myles K. Meehan of Narberth, Pa.; and nine grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Interment followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.

Fred J. Bruno

Mr. Bruno, 82, of Clermont, Fla., died Aug. 17 at Lake Harris Health Center, Leesburg, Fla. Born in Red Bank, he had lived in Shrewsbury before moving to Clermont 15 years ago. Mr. Bruno was a salesman at Shrewsbury Volkswagen and was the former proprietor of Riverside Bowling Lanes, Red Bank. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a former communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Mr. Bruno is survived by his wife, Carol Swoll Bruno; four sons, James F. Bruno of Leesburg, Fla., Patrick Bruno of Plant City, Fla., and F. Jay and Ronald Bruno of Clermont; three daughters, Jennifer L. Nelson of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Kathy and Sharon Bruno of Clermont; and three brothers, James Bruno of Little Silver, Dr. Anthony J. Bruno of Middletown, and Richard Bruno of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 19 Schoolhouse Road, Somerset 08873.

Vincent Havens

Mr. Havens, 69, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Aug. 22 at his home. Born in Jersey City, he had been a longtime resident of Middletown. Mr. Havens was a salesman before his retirement seven years ago. He served in the Air National Guard during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, Middletown; and a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 2179 and the Knights of Columbus, both Middletown, and the Irish Federation of Monmouth County. Mr. Havens is survived by his wife of 37 years, Margaret (Powers) Havens; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Vincent and Matthew Havens, both of Belford, Paul and Jennifer Havens of Holmdel, and Christopher Havens of Long Branch; and two grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Catherine’s Church, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.

Ben Rassas

Mr. Rassas, 94, of Little Silver died Jan. 11 at home. Born in Long Branch, he resided there and in Shrewsbury prior to moving to Little Silver 44 years ago. Mr. Rassas was the owner of Rassas Pontiac Inc., Red Bank, the past 63 years. He was a member of Congregation Brothers of Israel, Elberon section of Long Branch, and Congregation B’nai Israel, Rumson. He was predeceased by his wife, Molly Rassas, in 1981. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Marge Rassas of Rumson; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Harvey Jacob of Cherry Hill; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Interment was at Congregation Brothers of Israel Cemetery, West Long Branch. Arrangements were by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean Township.

Kostas "Gus" Smilios

Mr. Smilios, 59, of Ocean Township died Jan. 10 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Thessaloniki, Greece, he came to the United States in 1970 and resided in Asbury Park before moving to Ocean 28 years ago. Mr. Smilios was the owner of Star Brite Construction Co., Asbury Park. He was a member of St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, Asbury Park. He is survived by his wife, Janet Rescigno Smilios; a daughter, Mia Smilios of the West End section of Long Branch; three sons, Elias Smilios of Tinton Falls, Gary Uyeyama of West Long Branch, and Gregory Stackhouse of Oceanport; three brothers, Nikos Smilios, Christos Smilios and George Smilios, all of Greece; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, Asbury Park. Entombment was at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. The Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury 07702.

Walter J. Migut

Mr. Migut, 80, of South River died Jan. 7 in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as chief film cutter at E.I. DuPont Photo Products, Parlin section of Sayreville, where he worked for 43 years. His wife, Sophie Ceslowski Migut, died in 1991. Surviving are a son, Paul of South River; two brothers, Chester Migut of South River and Frank Migut of Bradley Beach; two sisters, Rose Banach of South River and Jean Montigros of Red Bank; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass was offered at St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church, South River. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Jamesburg.

Harold T. McGrath

Mr. McGrath, 82, of Shrewsbury, died March 3 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, due to complications from diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Born in Erie, Pa., he had lived in Red Bank before moving to Shrewsbury in 1952. Prior to retiring in Aug. 1986, he worked for the Red Bank Post Office for 24 years. He was a Cub Scout leader for Troop 50 in Shrewsbury for several years and also started the first girls softball team in Shrewsbury. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and James; a brother, James; and a sister, MaryAnn Coe. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Emmanuelletta L.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James P. of Bothell, Wash., and Charles D. and Diane of Howell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia A. and Bernard J. Homefield of Ocean Grove, and Kathleen M. and William E. McCauley of River Plaza; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were private, with Thompson Funeral Home, Red Bank, in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Shrewsbury First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 262, Shrewsbury 07702.

Hartwell "Hart" Keene Webber

Mr. Webber, 91, of Red Bank died March 5. He was born in Pittsfield, Mass. He taught music in 14 different schools throughout Vermont and New Hampshire, prior to working as a disc jockey for a country-western radio station in Burlington, Vt. He was a sergeant in the Army Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946, which brought him to Fort Monmouth, where he worked as a civilian environmental engineer after World War II. He served on the Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS) for more than 40 years, relaying messages overseas from military personnel to their families. Mr. Webber served on the Red Bank Zoning Board of Adjustments and was active in civic affairs. He was predeceased by his wife, Clarina "Sherry" Petraglia. He is survived by a brother, Donald, of Pittsfield, Mass.; three daughters, Claire Heil of Ridge, N.Y., Jane Webber of Bernardsville, and Carol Williams of Warren, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. James Church, Red Bank, after visitation at John E. Day Funeral Home, also Red Bank. Interment followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Hart and Sherry Webber Scholarship Fund at Red Bank Catholic High School.

Blanche L. Burns

Mrs. Burns of Monmouth Beach died March 10 at her home. Born in Coventry, R.I., she had lived in Monmouth Beach since 1956. She worked as a waitress at the Corner Store. She was a communicant of the Church of the Precious Blood, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Monmouth Beach for many years. She enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter F. Burns, in 1987; and her parents, Stanley and Anna Lukowicz. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Walter III and Pam Burns of Indianapolis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Michael Murray of Little Silver, and Pam and Stewart Magee of Roseland; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren A funeral Mass was held at the Church of Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach, and interment was held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
