Butler, Theresa Claire, a longtime resident of Yonkers, died on August 12, 2006, just two months short of her 102nd Birthday. Born in Ganston, Germany on Oct. 4, 1904 to the late Andrew and Catherine (Durczynski) Adamski, she entered the United States and become a naturalized citizen on December 29, 1915.
Her father was a horticulturist and raised his family on the estate he tended in the Bronx, N.Y., before moving to Yonkers. Here she met and married the love of her life Lawrence A. Butler on September 14, 1924 and raised her three sons with a firm hand and much love. Mom was an excellent cook and “the best pie baker ever”. At the age of 29, Theresa was afflicted with breast cancer which she overcame with the same strength and faith in God that has kept her going all these years. During World War II, she was the sole caretaker for her parents. The sudden loss of her husband in 1954 forced Theresa to go back to work. She applied for and got a job with the Graphite Metallizing Corporation, teaching herself all the secretarial skills needed to do her job; again showing her great strength of character. She retired from this job in the early 70’s and moved upstate to Red Hook, New York with her brother Charles. The “Farm” was one of the happiest places for her and her family. Mom volunteered at The Dutchess Community Hospital for 14 years and received various citations over the years.
Her brother Charles died in 1983 and after a few years, she moved back to Yonkers into St. Casimir’s Senior Citizen apartments in 1987. In July of 2004 she entered St. Cabrini Nursing Home after a bad fall.
