Florence Annutto
Florence M. Annutto, 86, a longtime resident of 310 S. Bellinger St., Herkimer, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, where for the last seven years she was receiving tender, loving care.
Florence was born on Feb. 23, 1915, in Herkimer, the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria (Domenica) Annutto, and she was educated in Herkimer schools. She was of the Catholic faith and a communicant of the Church of Sts. Anthony and Joseph, Herkimer. She was last employed in the garment industry for many years and later with UNIVAC until her retirement after many years of dedicated work. She was a member of the former Crusaders Auxiliary and the Tony R. George Auxiliary.
As a youth, Florence worked with her mother and father in the operation of the family business, Annutto Greenhouse and Fruit Stand.
Florence's family was central to her life. She was well known by family and friends for the many happy gatherings she graciously hosted in her home, especially during the holidays. As a devoted family matriarch, she held her family dear to heart, taking very good care of them. She will be remembered in her later years for her precious moments spent with "Sissie Pauline."
She is survived by her special niece, Georgina Madore Viscosi and her husband John Richard Viscosi and their two daughters, Georgina Marie and Felicia Richelle of Gloversville, all of whom she resided with for many years; one sister, Elizabeth Lidano of Herkimer; two sisters-in-law, Netty Annutto of Syracuse and Julia Annutto of Herkimer. Also surviving are many special, beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Florence's siblings preceded her in death including five brothers, Philip Annutto, Anthony Annutto, Al Massaro, Nicholas Annatta, and Alphonso Annotto; three sisters, Pauline Madore, Antoinette Campagna and Lilian Morra.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington St., Herkimer.
Florence's funeral service will begin at 8:45 a.m. Monday morning at the funeral home, where prayer will be offered. The funeral procession will proceed to the Church of Sts. Anthony and Joseph, S. Main St., Herkimer, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Robert Shinos at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer.
Harold Banta
Harold W. Banta, 79, of Lakeview Road, Broadalbin, died Friday morning [June 1, 2001] at home following a brief illness.
He was born in Gloversville on Sept. 13, 1921, a son of Floyd and Margaret Lynaugh Banta. He was a graduate of Gloversville High School. Mr. Banta had resided in Gloversville for most of his life, moving to Broadalbin in 1977.
He was employed as a steelworker at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, retiring in 1983. Mr. Banta was a former tax assessor and building inspector for the town of Broadalbin.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater.
Mr. Banta was a member of the Northampton United Methodist Church at Fish House. He was a member of the Kennyetto Masonic Lodge since 1955 and had recently been serving as its chaplain. Mr. Banta was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Broadalbin.
Survivors include his wife, the former Norma Quackenbush, whom he married on Jan. 5, 1946; a son, Craig J. Banta of Latham; three daughters, Harlene Bachorik of Rotterdam, Candace Bachorik of Farmington, Maine, and Lori Banta of Broadalbin; 10 grandchildren, Robert Bachorik, Diana Daigle, Eric Bachorik, Marc Bachorik, James Milnyczuk, Amy Milnyczuk, Beth Milnyczuk, Pamela Morand, Deborah Ronca, Kari Banta and eight great-grandchildren.
Cremation took place at the Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Northampton United Methodist Church, 1605 County Highway 110, Broadalbin, with the Rev. Brad Broyles officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kennyetto Masonic Lodge, 2 Bridge St., Broadalbin, where a ritual will be conducted at 7 p.m. Final burial of the remains will take place at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Kennyetto Lodge, PO Box 355, or to the church, in care of Elizabeth Pickering, PO Box 356, both in Broadalbin. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., Broadalbin.
Kathryn Elizabeth Fagan
Kathryn Elizabeth Fagan, 31, of Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Mass., died Tuesday [May 29, 2001] at her home.
Omitted from the obituary published Thursday were a sister-in-law, Kelly Fagan of Perth, and a brother-in-law, James Hogan of Baldwinsville.
Henry Tauber
Henry C. Tauber, an importer and leather merchant who was president and owner of Spanish American Skin Company from 1936 to 1981, died on May 29 [2001] at his home in Gloversville. He was 92.
Mr. Tauber was born in Batavia, Java, (Jakarta, Indonesia) on Jan. 12, 1909, of Swiss parents. His father had moved to Java in 1875 and owned a company that imported guns and munitions and exported batik fabrics and spices to Europe until the family returned to Switzerland in 1911.
Mr. Tauber began working in the late 1920s as a journalist in Nice, France, after which he worked in Brussels, Belgium, and attended the London School of Economics in England.
In 1929, as a young man, he purchased a company in Zurich, Switzerland, that imported Alfa Romeo automobiles from Italy. He began a successful race car driving career in 1930 and won many races throughout Europe, including the prestigious German Grand Prix on the Nurburgring in 1932.
In 1934, Mr. Tauber began working in the wool and leather business for his future father-in-law, Ernest Bauman, in tanneries owned by the family in Vich and Tarassa, Spain.
He married the former Verena Bauman on Jan. 22, 1936, in Kusnacht, Switzerland, after which they immigrated to Gloversville. His wife, Verena, died in Gloversville on Aug. 22, 1990.
Mr. Tauber traveled extensively and established business relationships throughout the Middle East and East and West Africa during his leather business career.
Locally, he was one of the early members and commodore of the Mayfield Yacht Club. He joined the Eccentric Club in 1936 and was president in 1960. He was active in the Gloversville YMCA and the Fulton County Republican Party, and he was a director of City National Bank in Gloversville from 1959 to 1984.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Hank and Sally Tauber of Park City, Utah; his daughter and son-in-law Marion and Heinz Brennwald-Tauber of Avon, Conn.; his grandchildren David Henry Tauber and Kristina Tauber of Park City, Utah, Timothy Brennwald of Park City, Utah, Carina Brennwald-Kieper and Daniel Brennwald of Avon, Conn.
A memorial service will be conducted at noon on June 29 at the St. James Lutheran Church, 521 N. Main St., Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the the YMCA's Gloversville branch or the charity of one's choice. Arraignments are by the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville.
Raymond Wilson
Mr. Raymond S. Wilson, 81, of Edinburg Road, Northville, died Friday, May 31, [2001] at Albany Stratton VA Medical Center.
He was born on June 10, 1919 in Gloversville, the son of Claude and Bertha Brooks Wilson. He served in the Marine Corps from June 2, 1942 to Nov. 16, 1945 in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
Mr. Wilson was a welding foreman, employed by Hussmann Corporation of Gloversville for 30 years.
He is survived by nephews, Robert G. Wilson of Gloversville and Skip Wilson of Northville; nieces, Sally VanNostrand and Susanne Wilson, both of Gloversville, as well as several other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers, Allen Wilson, Harry Wilson, Gerald Wilson, Howard Wilson; and sisters, Irene Schiedel, Leona Frederick, Dolla Cowl.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Elder Jack Buchanan will officiate. Cremation will take place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078.
Rosa Zurnick
Rosa Zurnick, 91, of Forest Hill Towers of Gloversville, died Wednesday, May 23, [2001] at home after a short illness.
She was born on Dec. 30, 1909, in New Bethlehem, Pa.
She was a member of Kingsboro Assembly of God Church, Gloversville.
Survivors include three sons, William Barnett of Mayfield, Daniel Barnett of Plano, Texas, and John Barnett of Bricktown, N.J.; four daughters, Nellie Dominick of Wilmington, Calif., Catherine Leskovar of Baltimore, Md., Martha Jane Collins of Waretown, N.J., and Michele Keller of Fonda; two brothers, William Lawrence of Niagara Falls and Bernard Lawrence of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two sisters, Mildred Beyer and Catherine Eber of California; 69 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Elsie (Else) Chini
Elsie (Else) Chini, "Oma," 94, of Northville went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 2, [2001] at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. She was born July 24, 1906, in Velbert, Rhineland, Germany, the daughter of Elfriede Matschke Schweinsburg and Heinrich Schweinsburg. She came to America at age 19. She married Josef Chini, also of Velbert, who died in 1960. As German-American immigrants, they made their home in Michigan, Illinois and Long Island. She has lived in Northville since 1964. They had four children: Joseph Chini, who died in 1982; Madeline Derwin of Johnstown, Dorothy Downey of Saranac, N.Y., and Thomas Chini of Ellensburg, Wash.
Elsie has 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three expected great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was an excellent and resourceful homemaker all her married life. She was of the Protestant Faith, had a great love for the Lord Jesus Christ, her family, her home, friends and neighbors, her country and the village of Northville. Elsie enjoyed riding her bike, and she loved music, reading, history, sewing, knitting and quilting. She was a member of the Molly Brant Quilters. She became a great American citizen and had a pioneer spirit. Elsie was a faithful friend to many and appreciative of every small kindness shown to her. An often-heard phrase was, "You made my day!"
Her heart's passion was to help feed the hungry children of the world. Elsie was currently sponsoring two children through World Vision: Tesfaye Mulunesh (girl) in Ethiopia and Fernando A. Maia (boy) in Brazil.
She was a Faith Partner to Coral Ridge Ministries in proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ and reclaiming America for Christ. She also loved and supported the ministries of Billy Graham and of Samaritan Purse.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Northville Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to attend a service that will follow at 8 p.m. by the Rev. R.W. Williams. Burial will be on Tuesday in Redford, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to World Vision would be appreciated. Harold J. Morse
Harold J. Morse, 81, of Gloversville, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville after a short illness.
Mr. Morse was born in Denver, N.Y., Jan. 26, 1920, the son of Charles and Carrie Hinkley Morse. Mr. Morse graduated from Roxbury High School in 1938. He retired from Catskill Craftsmen, Stamford, in 1982. He was a member of the Gilboa Masonic Lodge, a former member of the Hobart and Roxbury Fire Departments and the Hobart and Roxbury Methodist Churches.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Jones Morse; three daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Hill of Harpersfield, Beverly (William) Tanno of Gloversville and Marie (Donald) Frederick of Lauderhill, Fla. He was predeceased by his son, James E. Morse, in Vietnam. He is survived by grandchildren, Dwayne and David Hill, James Yanno, Gina Yanno King, Christopher, Donald and Michael Frederick, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased also by three brothers and one sister.
Cremation was at Hillington Crematory in Morris, N.Y.
The family will be receiving family and friends from 7 to 9 Monday, June 4, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury. A Masonic service will take place Monday evening.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at the Miller Funeral Home in Roxbury, N.Y., followed by burial at the Locust Hill Cemetery in Hobart, with the Rev. Richard A. Dykstra officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Roxbury Fire Department in Roxbury, N.Y. 12474.
