Paul E. Hurley
MILLBROOK - Paul E. Hurley, long time Millbrook resident and businessman, ascended to his life's reward on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 in Tucson, AZ, surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was 82. Mr. Hurley was an executive at the Bank of Millbrook for more than 30 years and a resident of Millbrook since 1954. He leaves behind a large and loving family as the result of his marriages to two loving women: Florence Louise Walsh Hurley, his wife of 35 years, who predeceased him on April 20, 1986, and Bettie Williams Guertin Hurley, to whom he was married in 1987 and survives. Mr. Hurley was an influential figure in business and civic development in Millbrook for more than 40 years. He enjoyed swimming, sailing, reading, singing and music, and any pursuits that involved his children and grandchildren. He was especially fond of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle. He traveled extensively in his later years, with visits to Ireland and Great Britain, Italy and Greece, Germany and Eastern Europe, the Caribbean and most of the United States. Mr. Hurley was born in Boston, Mass., on June 22, 1926, the son of the late Francis Xavier and Isabelle Hurley. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944 and was a stateside veteran of World War II. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, Mr. Hurley pursued his education through the G.I. Bill and was awarded a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration from Boston College in 1949. Mr. Hurley and the former Florence Louise Walsh were married on Aug. 25, 1949. In 1953, the Hurley's moved their young family to Millbrook where they established a lifelong household. Mr. Hurley joined the Bank of Millbrook in 1954 as cashier. He was executive vice president when he retired in 1985. He maintained a residence in Millbrook following his retirement. He and his second wife, Bettie, also established a residence in Tucson, Ariz. in 1998. Mr. Hurley was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Millbrook and St. Thomas the Assisi Church in Tucson, Arizona. He was a member of the Millbrook Business Association, Millbrook Bicentennial Committee, St. Joseph's School Building Committee as treasurer, St. Joseph's Church, St. Joseph's Men's Choir, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Parker Haight Post No. 260 and Millbrook Tribute Garden Committee. In addition to his first wife, Florence, Mr. Hurley was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary. He is survived by his two loving sisters, Isabelle Walsh of Norton, Mass. and Eileen Walsh of Brookline, Mass; by his cherished and loving wife, Bettie Williams Guertin Hurley, of Millbrook and Tucson, Ariz.; by 11 sons, spouses, grandchildren and one great grandchild: Paul Robert and Pao-lin Liu Hurley of Visalia, Calif., and their children, James Hurley and Kathryn Brisbin of Mountain View, Calif., Michael Hurley of San Jose, Calif., Anna Hurley and Alex Hurley, both of San Francisco, Calif.; son Thomas Michael and Diana Bontecou Hurley and their daughter, Isabelle Hurley, all of Salt Point, NY; son Richard Dennis and Kathryn Johnson Hurley and their children, Courtney and Cameron Hurley, all of Salt Point; son Patrick Joseph and Carolyn Cardinale Hurley and their children, Ryan, Dylan and Stephen, all of Salt Point; son Christopher James Hurley, of Millbrook, Katherine Thurst Hurley of Poughquag and their children, Andrew and Emily Hurley of Poughquag; son Francis Xavier and Mary Tirante Hurley and their son, Daniel, all of Millbrook; son Joseph John and Laura Meier Hurley and their children, Craig, Alyssa and Evan, all of Millbrook; son John Joseph Hurley and Diane Wood of Phoenix, Ariz.; Phil and Patty Pratt Guertin of Tucson, Ariz., and their daughters, Elizabeth Guertin of Washington, D.C. and Allyson Guertin-Solar and husband Timothy Solar, of Portland, Ore.; Hal and Michelle McKeweon Guertin, and their children, Heather Guertin and fiancé Ryan Guise and Ashley Guertin, all of Millbrook; Ted Williams and Margaret Hanley Guertin and their children Erin, David, Joseph and Lea all of of Concord, Mass.; one great grandchild, Anthony Guertin-Hernandez of Concord, Mass, several nieces, a nephew and many, many friends. He was truly loved and respected by so many for his compassionate and loving spirit and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 22, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Avenue, Millbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.at St. Joseph's Church, North Avenue, Millbrook. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Millbrook Rescue Squad.com.

Janet M. Palmatier
HYDE PARK - Janet M. Palmatier, 77, a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Hyde Park Nursing Home. Mrs. Palmatier retired from Conklin Instrument in Pleasant Valley. She liked to knit and crochet, and was an avid QVC shopper. Janet was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pleasant Valley. Born in Poughkeepsie on October 12, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Richard F. and Hattie M. Silvernail Curran. She attended Hyde Park Schools. In October, 1947 in Poughkeepsie, she married James E. Palmatier, Sr. He predeceased her in 1981. Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline Allerton of Salt Point; two sons, James E. Palmatier Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Egremont, Mass. and Patrick A. Palmatier and wife, Karen, of Hyde Park; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; four sisters, Shirley Van Vlack and husband, Robert, of Kingston, Eleanor Cornell of Poughkeepsie, Aleta Dalrymple of Hyde Park, and Lucille Nittiskie of Millbrook; four brothers, Richard Curran and wife, Frances, of Poughkeepsie, Charles Curran and wife, Carol, of Salt Point, Thomas Curran and wife, Eunice, of Hyde Park, and James Curran of Poughkeepsie; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth, David, and Douglas Curran. There are no calling hours. Funeral services were private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Grace Smith House, Inc., PO Box 5205, Poughkeepsie, NY 12602. Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Hyde Park.

Charles and Anna Tierney
WILTON - Charles and Anna Tierney died unexpectedly on August 15, 2008. They were married for 50 years. Charles was an U.S. Army veteran. Charles and Anna both worked and retired from New York State D.D.S.O. They are survived by their son, Mike Tierney and his wife, Margaret. Their daughter Michele Morgan and her husband, Tony. Their grandchildren, Jessica Morgan, Felicia Rennick, Angie Rennick, Crystal Wilderman and a great-grandchild, Ethan Grimley. Anna's siblings, Reginald Killmer, Frank and Helen Killmer, Tom and Nancy Killmer and Robert Killmer. The family requested no visitation or services. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Diabetes Association, Albany Office, 7 Washington Square, Albany, NY. 12205. Arrangements are by Wilton Funeral Home, Wilton, NY.

Samuel F. "Fred" VanTassel, Sr.
BEACON - Samuel F. "Fred" VanTassel, Sr., a Beacon resident, died Monday, August 18, 2008, at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh. He was 81. Born in Nelsonville, he was the son of Samuel and Sarah Florence Daniels VanTassel. On October 7, 1950 in Cold Spring, he married the former Elizabeth Locke. Mrs. VanTassel survives at home in Beacon. Mr. VanTassel was a machine operator for Chemprene, Beacon. He was a US Marine Corps veteran serving during World War II. He was a Life Member of Beacon Engine Fire Company and Carmen Ramputi Marine Corps League, Beacon. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He was also a Mets and Giants fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children: Sam VanTassel and his wife, Yvonne, Wappingers Falls; John VanTassel and his wife, Christine, Beacon; Gary VanTassel and his wife, Joanne, Hopewell Junction; David VanTassel and his wife, Debbie, New Windsor; Debra Wilson, Satellite Beach, FL; Lisa MacNary and her husband, Dave, New Windsor; and Betty Warren and her husband, Eric, Beacon; nineteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. VanTassel was predeceased by his siblings, Rose VanTassel, Violet Flynn, Robert VanTassel, and Janet Mericle. The family will receive their friends on Thursday, August 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon. Beacon Engine Company will meet for services at 7 p.m. A funeral service conducted by Pastor Victor Nelson will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Richard Alvin West
POUGHKEEPSIE - Richard Alvin West, 74, a resident of Poughkeepsie, died on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at home. Mr. West was a Welder on Titan Missle at Cape Caneveral, Fl. A member of the Airforce, American Legion Arlington 1302 and VFW Firemen Exempt. Born April 2, 1934 in Cassapolis, MI, he was the son of Hugh and Dorothy Toms West. He is survived by children and a brother, Melvin West and spouse Tomiko of LaGrangeville; a sister, Martha Henion and husband, Jim of Hyde Park, several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by two brothers, Hugh West and Tom West. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Union Cemetery in Hyde Park. Arrangements by Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, 4353 Albany Post Rd., Hyde Park, NY.

Howard Keeler
Howard Keeler passed away on August 18, 2008 at age 85. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, who was cherished by his friends and loved by his pets. Howard served his country in Europe during World War II as antiaircraft gunner in General Patton's 550 Company B Battalion. He married his wife, Virginia in 1949 and enjoyed a long marriage until her death in 2003. Howard was a longtime employee of IBM and is survived by his children, Scott, Robin, Michael, Stuart, Kerry and Kelly, and their children. The world is now less bright without him, he will always be loved and remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him. Godspeed. Arrangements are in charge of the Delehanty Funeral Home, 64 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls, NY.

Savino "Curley" Loiodice
ALACHUA, FL - Savino "Curley" Loiodice, 85, of Alachua, FL, passed away August 17, 2008. Born in Manhattan, NY, and raised in Cold Spring, he had been a 10year-Florida resident. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen. He is survived by his daughter, Mary and her husband, Alan Spangenberg and their three children, Matthew, Dylan and Kelsey of Poughkeepsie, NY; his daughter, Angie and her husband, Richard Gambuzza and their three children, Jason Harvey, Gabrielle and Giana from Lindenhurst, NY; he is also the greatgrandfather of Dominic; his daughter, Lynn Jester and her children, Robert and David of Arkansas. Savino worked for 35 years at Texaco Research Facility, Glenham, NY. He is a WWII veteran and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Visitation will be Friday, August 22, 2008 from 1-4 and 6-9pm at Libby Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Teller Ave., Beacon, NY. Graveside services will take place Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 11am at St. Luke's Cemetery, Wolcott Ave., Beacon. Arrangements are under the direction of Libby Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Teller Ave., Beacon, NY.
