Joseph R. Ryle Sr.
Joseph R. "Ricky" Ryle Sr., 54, died at Nathan Littauer Hospital Friday after being stricken. He was born Feb. 24, 1947 in Gloversville, the son of James E. Sr. and Helen Sweet Ryle.

He attended Gloversville schools and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Ryle was employed by the Schenectady Labor Union for several years and later owned and operated the Ryle Rigging Company of Gloversville.

Mr. Ryle was employed as a press operator for the past five years at the Universal Distribution Company of Gloversville.

He is past president and a longtime member of the Gloversville Eagles Club. Mr. Ryle was also a longtime member of the Gloversville Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen M. Hickok, whom he married Oct. 19, 1974; three sons, Joseph R. Ryle Jr., and Billy Joe E. Ryle, of Saratoga Springs, and Aaron J. Ryle, of Gloversville; five daughters, Rebecca J. Holston, Toni L. Morris, and Gretchen M. Jones all of Dothan, Ala, and Rickie M. Ryle and Jamie L. Ryle of Gloversville; two brothers, James E. Ryle Jr. of Ocala, Fla. and John Fonda of Gloversville; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Farmer, pastor of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church, officiating.

Internment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.

Betty Harris
Mrs. Betty Harris, 80, of South First Street, died Sunday at Saratoga Hospital after being stricken at her daughter's home.

Mrs. Harris was born on March 31, 1921 in Gloversville, the daughter of Walter and Iva Marlitt. She was a graduate of Northville Central School.

She was employed as a glove maker, most recently by the former Conroy Glove Co., Northville.

Mrs. Harris was a member of Northville Presbyterian Church and its Steadfast Class and Northville Girls.

Her husband, John Harris, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Olucci of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Gladys Ludwin of Gloversville; two grandchildren, Matthew Olucci of Fonda and Gaia Anderson and husband Richard of Saratoga Springs; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville. Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Enterprises, Route 5S, Fultonville.

Ralph Gardner
Ralph Gardner, 84, of Pearl Street, Johnstown, died Monday, April 16, at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1916 in Johnstown, the son of Fred and Nina VanSickler Gardner.

He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, where he played a trumpet in the Army Band after he graduated from Johnstown High School.

He worked for 34 years as a dental lab technician for the former Dr. Robert A. Smith of Johnstown and retired in 1983.

He was a member of Johnstown Reformed Church. He was financial secretary for many years for the American Federation of Musicians. He played trumpet for Freddy Clute's Orchestra, the Johnstown Citizens Band and The Ralph Gardner Combo.

He was married to the late Eva Osusky on Aug. 30, 1941 and she died on May 17, 1989.

He is survived by a daughter, Donna Roddy of Johnstown; a grandson, James M. Roddy of Clifton Park; granddaughters, Kristina Roddy of Glenville and Michelle Roddy of Johnstown. He was predeceased by one sister, Evelyn A. Gardner, who died in 1996.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Johnstown Reformed Church. The Rev. Jack Millard, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to Johnstown Citizens Band, 9 Baker St., Johnstown, NY 12095, or charity of one's choice.

Charles Bradford Hildreth
Charles Bradford "Chile" Hildreth, 84, of the 200 block of Luke Street, Edenton, N.C., died Monday, April 16, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Mr. Hildreth was born in North Adams, Mass., the son of the late Ralph C. and Amanda Couture Hildreth. He resided in Gloversville until he and his wife moved to Edenton in 1992.

He began his career as a leather and fur worker and later owned a service station and car dealership, Chile's Auto Sales. He had served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Sophie Susman Hildreth; two daughters, Kathryn Watson and her husband, Ward, and Jeanne Meher and her husband, Edward, all of Edenton; a sister, Bernice Kehn of Loudonville; a brother, Clark Hildreth of Newport Richie, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by a daughter, Barbara H. Tracy.

A memorial service will be held at a later time in Gloversville. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Miller Funeral Home, Edenton.

Donald W. Whitman
Donald W. Whitman, age 54, of 44 Steele Ave., Gloversville, died Sunday, April 15, at Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1946 in Gloversville, the son of Arthur and Florence Boyd Whitman. Donald graduated from Gloversville High School. He served in the Navy from 1964 to 1969. On Jan. 2, 1974 Donald and the former Diane Schadeck were united in marriage in West Warwick, R.I.

He worked for many years in the textile industry in Rhode Island and later was a floor worker employed by Pan American Tanning Co., Gloversville. He retired due to ill health.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Whitman; two daughters, Carol Silveira of Gloversville and Toni Raimondo of Warwick, R.I.; a son, Donald W. Whitman Jr. of Cave Creek, Ariz.; his father, Arthur M. Whitman Jr. of Gloversville; a sister, Anna Jump of St. Johnsville; four grandsons; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Donald was predeceased by his mother, Florence Whitman; a sister, Gloria Whitman; and a brother, Arthur M. Whitman III.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 19. The Rev. R.W. Williams will officiate. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions in Donald's memory may be made to American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12205.

George Hinkle
Mr. George Hinkle, 71, of Hickory Hill Road, Fonda, died Monday evening at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1929 in Fonda, the son of J. Edward and Alice Henry Hinkle. He was a lifelong Fonda resident and attended Hickory Hill Road Country School.

Mr. Hinkle owned and operated the family dairy farm on Hickory Hill Road in Fonda until he retired in 1987. He also was a school bus driver for 25 years for Guiffre Bros. in Fonda. After his retirement, he worked for the Antlers Country Club in Fort Johnson and was a bus driver for the Fulton County Office for the Aging. He was last employed by Fulton-Montgomery Community College for a short time.

He was a member of Fonda Reformed Church and was also a member, one-time treasurer, and once served on the board of commissioners of the Town of Mohawk Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Johnstown Moose Lodge and served on the board of directors of the Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. He also enjoyed going to the Palace Diner in Johnstown.

Mr. Hinkle was married on Dec. 29, 194, to the former Arlene VanAlstyne.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Alan Hinkle, Gary Hinkle, Ron Hinkle and David Hinkle, all of Fonda; a daughter, Alice Hinkle of Fonda; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by four brothers, Clarence Hinkle, Glen Hinkle, Gordon Hinkle and Earl Hinkle; and a sister, Edith Hinkle.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Karen Patterson will officiate. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Town of Mohawk Volunteer Fire Department, 2553 Route 30A, Fonda, NY 12068, or to the Fonda Reformed Church, 19-21 Broadway, Fonda.

Hilda M. Hufnail
Hilda M. Hufnail, 89, of South First Street, Northville, died today at the Fulton County Regional Health Care Facility, Gloversville, where she had been a patient since February.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1912 in Northville, the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth VanVranken. She graduated from Northville Central School and was a lifelong Northville resident.

After she graduated from high school, she was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse. She also was manager of the cafeteria at Northville Central School at one time. She was a glove worker and lastly was secretary for Paul Bradt Construction in Northville.

She was a member of Northville Baptist Church.

She married Maurice E. Hufnail on Jan. 11, 1931 and he died on Feb. 19, 1979.

Survivors include one son, Jon Hufnail of Johnstown; one daughter, Linda B. Whitman of Northville; three sisters, Jean Bradt of Northville, Grace DeLorme of Ballston Spa and Virginia Shoop of Gloversville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Briggs and Evelyn Cramer; and one brother, Douglas VanVranken.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St., where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Spring burial will take place at King Cemetery, Northampton. Memorials may be made to the Northampton Ambulance Squad.
