Andrew Koval
Mr. Andrew Koval, 81, of Fordsbush Road, town of Minden, died Tuesday, April 17, [2001] at Little Falls Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on March 19, 1920 in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Vasel and Peggy Branza Koval. Mr. Koval was educated at Fort Plain School. He had been a resident of the area since 1932.

Mr. Koval was the owner and operator of Lavok Dairy Farm for 35 years and retired in 1985.

He was a former assessor of the town of Minden.

He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Fort Plain; former president of the Eastern Milk Producers Co-op; former master of Osquago Grange and a former member of Van Hornesville Grange; New York State 1948 log rolling champion, and New York State 1949 log sawing champion. He was an avid fisherman.

On April 14, 1945, he married Helen Drag Koval. The Kovals recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Koval of Fort Plain; two daughters, Christine Tamsett of Johnstown and Deanna Evens of Delhi; one son, Martin L. Koval of Portland, Ore.; one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Evelyn Koval of the town of Minden, and four grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, where funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 126, Canajoharie, NY 13317, or South Minden Volunteer Fire Department, RD 3 Box 224, Fort Plain, NY 13339.

Robert H. McClelland
Robert H. McClelland, 79, of Fon Clair Street, Johnstown, died Wednesday at home after a long illness.

He was born on Oct. 8, 1921 in Gloversville, the son of Archibald and Gladys Wagshall McClelland. Mr. McClelland was a 1939 graduate of Johnstown High School.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the 609th Tank Destroyer Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. McClelland was a color and flavor technician for Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation, Canajoharie, and retired in 1987.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Gloversville and Johnstown and its 50 Plus Club, and a member of Johnstown Moose Lodge 1185 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 510.

He married Ruth Nelson on Sept. 15, 1945 and she died on May 26, 1988.

He is survived by one son and his wife, Robert and Sandra McClelland of Johnstown; long-time companion, Patricia Valachovic of Johnstown; one brother, William McClelland of St. Johnsville; two sisters, Doris Harrington of Florida and Patricia Hillabrandt of Gloversville; grandchildren, Michelle Almy of Mayfield and Robert McClelland Jr. of Canajoharie; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister, Bernice House, who died in 1969.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., Johnstown, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Richard Sears will officiate. Burial will take place at Fort Plain Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or charity of one's choice.

Margaret Abbott
Margaret "Peg" Abbott, 80, of North Arlington Avenue, Gloversville, died Tuesday at home following a brief illness.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1920 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Archibald T. and Edna Royce Fear.

She was a homemaker. She was well-known for her volunteer work at Lexington Center.

She was a member of the Mental Health Association of Fulton County. She was formerly named Woman of the Year by the Association for Retarded Children. She was a member of the Ida McGinnis Senior Citizens, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Auxiliaries. She taught Sunday school many years at the First Presbyterian Church and the First Congregational Church of Gloversville.

She was married on June 8, 1940 to James A. Abbott, who died in July 2000.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Nussbaum of Gettysburg, Pa. and Janice Abbott of Gloversville; one son, James Abbott of Buffalo; one sister, Diane of Yuma, Ariz.; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister, Dorothy Marcais.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville. The Rt. Rev. Norman Strauss, rector of Trinity Anglican Episcopal Church, Gloversville, will officiate. Burial will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Dave Kaplan
Dave Kaplan, 89, of Sacandaga Park, Northville, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1911 in Gloversville, the son of Benjamin and Ida Kaplan. He graduated from Gloversville High School and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served from 1942 to 1945.

He was self-employed in the leather business for over 60 years.

Survivors include one sister, Shirley Friedman of Gloversville; one nephew, Dean Lastfogel of Woodbury, Long Island; one great-nephew, Lawrence Friedman of Rochester, Minn.; great-great-nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one niece, Frances Lastfogel; and one nephew, Maurice Friedman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville. Rabbi Martin Gordon will officiate. Interment will take place at Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorials may be made to the Northampton Ambulance Service or Knesseth Israel Synagogue.

Walter W. Nourse Jr.
Mr. Walter W. Nourse Jr., 73, of 104 Mill Road, St. Johnsville, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 in Little Falls Hospital, where he had been a patient since March 22.

He was born on March 29, 1928 in the town of Day, Saratoga County, the son of Walter W. and Eleanor Dow Nourse. He attended schools in Edinburg.

He enlisted in the Navy and was discharged for medical reasons after a short period of service.

On July 4, 1948. he married Annette Stowell in the Oppenheim Methodist Church. She predeceased him.

Walter was employed as a polisher for the Remington Arms Co. of Ilion and retired from there in August 1981.

He was of the Methodist faith, a member of the Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club, a former member of the Oppenheim Volunteer Fire Department and was one of the volunteers who helped build the firehouse. He personally enjoyed woodworking and the grandchildren.

Surviving are his sons, Brian and his wife, Cathy Nourse of Oppenheim, Randy Nourse and his companion Vicky Scheuerman of Oppenheim; his stepsons, Michael Sanguine of Oppenheim and John P. Sanguine of Arizona; his brothers, Robert Nourse of Edinburg, Stanley Nourse of Gloversville; his sisters, Dorothy Gibson of Gloversville, Charlotte McNeil of Ocala, Fla., Marion Gelger of West Melbourne, Fla.; his grandchildren, Sara, Kelly, Kyle, Luke and Pam; Step-grandson, Robert Galusha. He was predeceased by a step-daughter, Sandra Galusha; and a brother, Edward Nourse.

Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville, where funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. The Rev. James Thomas will officiate. Cremation will follow with interment in Brown Cemetery, town of Oppenheim. Memorials may be sent to the Oppenheim Volunteer Fire Department in his memory.

Louise M. Koscher
Louise M. Koscher, 93, of South Ten Broeck Street, Scotia, died April 9, 2001 at Baptist Health Center, Scotia, after a long illness.

She was born in Johnstown and lived in the Scotia area for the past five years.

She was a glove maker for Boyce and Lazarus Leather in Johnstown for many years.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Johnstown and its Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Scotia and its Rosary Altar Society at the time of her death.

Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Emil Koscher; one daughter, Jacqueline Svec of Scotia; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be after 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, First Street, Scotia, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Building Fund, or to the Baptist Health Center. Arrangements are by White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Ave., Scotia.
