Richard Emil Evans
January 3, 2001
Mr. Richard Emil "Dick" Evans, 61, of Fort Johnson, died Tuesday at home.
He was born on Nov. 17, 1939 in Utica, the son of Robert and Helen Higham Evans. Mr. Evans was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. He had a camp at Pleasant Lake.
He served in the Army in Korea. He was the owner and operator of Evans and Sons Construction Co., doing dry wall finishing for 40 years. He retired in May 2000.
He was a basketball free throw champion and avid diver while in high school. He enjoyed golf and was a volunteer with the cancer telethon.
He is survived by his companion, Shirley Konik.
On Dec. 5, 1970, he married the former Dolores Ann Tresoline, who died in 1997.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, 100 Otsego St., Ilion. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Larry J. Kazala Sr.
January 3, 2001
Mr. Larry J. Kazala Sr., 54, of Amsterdam, died Tuesday at the home of his parents.
He was born on Jan. 17, 1946 in Amsterdam, the son of Martin J. and Florence Stark Kazala. Mr. Kazala was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Amsterdam, and was a lifelong area resident. He was employed at Wal-Mart, Amsterdam.
Mr. Kazala was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include his parents of Amsterdam; one son, Larry J. Kazala Jr. of Amsterdam; two daughters, Beverly Kazala of Gloversville and Erin Guisti of Amsterdam; four brothers, Richard Kazala of San Antonio, Texas, and George Kazala, Keith Kazala and Timothy Kazala, all of Amsterdam; two sisters, Judy Miller of Gloversville and Lee Ann Kazala of Amsterdam; several grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.

Florence D. Miller
January 3, 2001
Mrs. Florence D. Miller, 88, formerly of Perth, died Tuesday at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, Gloversville.
She was born on June 6, 1912 in Woodshollow, town of Mayfield, the daughter of James and Grace Frederick Dickinson. Mrs. Miller attended Woodshollow Schools and lived most of her life in Perth.
She was employed at Harrower's Blanket Mills, Hagaman; the Chalmers Knitting Mill, Crosley Glove Co., and Almor Co., all of Amsterdam. She retired in 1977.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Amsterdam United Methodist Church, the Perth Seniors and the Perthshire Grange.
On Oct. 20, 1928, she married Harold F. Miller, who died on Jan. 1, 1969. She was also predeceased by one son, Charles Miller, who died on Feb. 19, 1988.
She is survived by one grandson, Dany-James Miller of Utica; two step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandson.
A calling hour will be 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. A service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Cal Briggs-Harris, pastor of Amsterdam United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will take place in Perth Cemetery in the spring.

Gail Tomlinson
January 3, 2001
Miss Gail Tomlinson, 63, of Hebron, Washington County, a native of Gloversville, died Saturday at home after a short illness.
She was born on Oct. 15, 1937 in Gloversville, the daughter of Fred and Vivian Kidson Tomlinson. Miss Tomlinson was a graduate of the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing.
She worked for 20 years at Albany Medical Center. She was also employed for five years as a registered nurse at Hallmark Nursing Centre, Schenectady, and was a private duty nurse in the Capital Region.
She is survived by her companion of 22 years, Janet Truelove.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Park View Cemetery, Schenectady.

Elmer Longhenry

Elmer Longhenry, 93, of West State Street, Gloversville, died Sunday at the Fulton County Residential Healthcare Facility, Gloversville. He was born on July 6, 1907 in Gloversville, the son of the late John E. and Alice Duesler Longhenry. He was educated in Gloversville and Johnstown schools and graduated from Gloversville Business School.
From 1938 to 1959 he operated a grocery store and bakery on Washington Street, Gloversville.
From 1950 to 1958 he was Gloversville 3rd Ward alderman; chairman of the Police Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. From 1959 to 1966 he was Gloversville city chamberlain, when he instituted the practice of investing idle funds. From 1966 to 1978 he was Fulton County treasurer and instrumental in changing the office to data processing; a former member of the Concordia Club and the Gloversville Lions Club. In 1920 he joined the First Baptist Church, Gloversville, where he was a trustee, deacon and treasurer; and a member of the CB Club of Fulton County; the Fulton County Officers Association and the Fremont Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Darla Jean Christiano of Ventura, Calif.; two sons, John E. Longhenry of Gloversville and David Longhenry of Raymond, N.H.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was married on June 6, 1931 to Dorothy Stoddard, who died in 1993.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. William R. Andrist will officiate. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.

Joyce A. Carpenter

Joyce A. Carpenter, 81, of Carlisle, Pa., formerly of Easton, Md., died on Sunday, June 3, at the Sara Todd Nursing Home in Carlisle.
She was born on Aug. 25, 1919, in Ilion, N.Y., the daughter of the late Harry and Helen Chartier Deming. After she graduated from Northville High School in 1937, she attended nursing school at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, where she received her nursing degree in 1940.
She worked at St. Mary's Hospital until 1964, when she moved to Columbus, Ohio. In 1971 she moved to Easton, Md., where she resided until 1999, when she moved to Carlisle, Pa.
Mrs. Carpenter is survived by: two daughters, Susan Gabriel of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Genie Coe of Hastings, Mich.; one sister, Winifred McConnell of Greenville, S.C.; three brothers, Malcolm Deming of Fulton, N.Y., Douglas Deming of Taylor, S.C. and Lawrence Deming of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. On Feb. 2, 1943 she married James W. Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter died on Nov. 15, 1994. She was also predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Sanders, who died in January.
Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Cecil Springsteen Flint

Mrs. Cecil Springsteen Flint, 95, of Mayfield, died Monday at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home.
She was born on June 21, 1905 in Brooklyn, the daughter of Oscar and Charlotte Anderson Springsteen. Mrs. Flint lived in Hempstead, Long Island for more than 40 years before she moved to Mayfield.
She was a graduate of Hempstead High School and earned a teaching degree from Jamaica, N.Y., Normal School.
Mrs. Flint was an elementary school teacher in Hempstead for several years.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Gloversville and a member of Hempstead Rosary Society of Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Virginia F. Montague of Mayfield; two granddaughters, Barbara Slingerland of Rockwell, N.C. and Carol M. Desmond of Shallotte, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Eric R., Matthew D. and and Sara N. Slingerland, all of Rockwell, N.C.; and one niece.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd M. Flint, who died in 1985; and one sister, Edith Kertell.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Gloversville. The Rev. David L. Tressic, pastor, will be celebrant. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
