Grace L. Kotnick
KINGSVILLE - Grace L. Kotnick, 83, of Cemetery Road, Kingsville, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Dorset, the daughter of William and Mabel (Tuttle) Reed.
She had lived in the Monroe and Kingsville area most of her life.
Mrs. Kotnick was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kingsville.
She was employed by the Dunne Rubber Co., in Ashtabula for three years and later worked for the Conneaut Can Co., for 12 years as a solderer.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading and crafts.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, John, whom she married on Feb. 15, 1941; two sons, John P. of Monroe Township, Ronald W. of Roaming Shores; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Hatch of Kingsville, Jeanette Hinckle of Naples, Fla., Frances Hatch of Franklin, N.C., Louise Scott of Hickory, N.C.; three brothers, Paul Richard Reed of Conneaut, Robert Reed of Huron and Raymond Reed of Kingsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lillian Stevens and two brothers, Howard and John Reed.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Kingsville, with the Rev. David Hines officiating.
Interment will be in Kelloggsville Cemetery.
Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Kotnick's name to the church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.

Lois B. Laugen
KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP - Lois B. Laugen, 81, of Wright St. died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Miller Memorial Health Center, Andover. after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 20, 1920, in Andover, the daughter of Louis and Helen (Karr) Butler and had been an area resident all her life.
She married Dean E. Laugen on Oct. 19, 1946.
Mrs. Laugen graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1938 and from St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland in 1941.
She served during World War II as a Navy nurse officer, serving in the American Theater.
After returning to the area in 1950, she began her nursing career at Ashtabula General Hospital, doing private duty. In 1952, she began working at Brown Memorial Hospital, Conneaut She became director of nurses there in 1956 and acting hospital administrator in 1960. In 1963 she was named administrator, a position she held until her retirement in 1985.
During her first year as administrator, the hospital received its first full accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. She was instrumental in directing three building expansion programs. The hospital was the first in the area to establish a formal patient education program. She also brought the idea of hospital road signs to the state.
Mrs. Laugen established the first paramedic training course to educate volunteers from the Conneaut Station 3 Ambulance service, a program that has since grown throughout the county. Under her direction, BMH was the first hospital in the county to establish two-way radio communication with ambulances. In 1980, realizing the medical necessity, she initiated a relationship between Brown Memorial and air medical transport units, filling patient needs by use of helicopters.
She served as president of the Ohio Nurses Association; was the first female president of the Ohio Hospital Association; and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Ashtabula Power Squadron and the Conneaut Boat Club.
She also was member of Kingsville Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon for a number of years. She sang with "The Three Lois's" on WICA radio on Saturday mornings during the late 1930's. She enjoyed music, reading, cooking, gardening, boating, fishing and spending time with her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Sally Donatone of Kingsville Township; two sons, David and Chip of Kingsville Township; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Swiger, Amy Caruso, Josh Laugen, Melissa, Amy, and Joe Donatone, and Zach Laugen; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 21, 1989, and her parents.
Service is 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Kingsville Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Stephen R. Long officiating. Burial will be in Lulu Falls Cemetery, Kingsville Township.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kingsville Volunteer Fire Department, 3130 E. Main St., Kingsville Township, or Kingsville Presbyterian Church, 3056 W. Main St., Kingsville Township.

Portia E. Woodworth
NORTH KINGSVILLE - Portia E. Woodworth, 90, of Reed Road in North Kingsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home.
She was born Nov. 30, 1911, in Conneaut, the daughter of Charles and Eva (Latchford) Leroux, and was a lifelong Conneaut resident.
She worked as a housekeeper at the former Roundtowner Motel.
She was a 50-year member of the New Apostolic Church, and enjoyed her family, gardening, reading and card games.
Survivors include two daughters, Lois Johnson and Clara Salsbury, both of Conneaut; a son, Charles Woodworth of Conneaut; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Woodworth, in 1990; a daughter, Erla Hills; three brothers, Warren, Gerald and Bruce Leroux, and grandchildren Carol Ann Hills and Jeff Allen, in infancy.
Service is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, and will be officiated by the New Apostolic Church. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Kingsville rescue squad

Ellen M. Mihalick
KINGSVILLE - Ellen Martha Mihalick, 86, of Benefit Avenue in Ashtabula, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
She was born July 6, 1916, the daughter of Adolph and Lydia (Suntunmaki) Rinto, and was a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
She was a longtime member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, and enjoyed entertaining her many friends and attending family picnics. She was famous for her excellent baking and cooking skills.
Survivors include three sons, Michael of Fort Mill, S.C., Bryan of Euclid, and Brent of Austinburg; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dennis; and three brothers, Arthur, Harry and Leroy Rinto.
Service is 10 a.m. Friday at the Mausoleum chapel at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville. Barbara Johnson, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, will officiate. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Zaback-Czup Funeral Home, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Living Memorial Fund of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4901 Main Ave., Ashtabula, 44004.

Kenneth Van Slyke
NORTH KINGSVILLE - Kenneth Leroy Van Slyke, 84, of East Center Street, North Kingsville, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Carington Park, where he had been a patient the past three weeks.
He was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Youngstown, the son of Dave and Cora (Reiter) Van Slyke, and had lived in the area most of his life.
Prior to retirement in 1979, he worked as a hostler for the New York Central Railroad and Conrail. He also operated his own barber shop from 1956 to 1990.
He was a B-26 pilot in the Ninth Air Force, 99th Combat Bomb Wing, and flew in campaigns in Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe.
A member of North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, he enjoyed golfing at Village Green Golf Course with friends.
Survivors include his wife, the former Betty Jane Lee, whom he married in December 1945; two sons, James L. of Kingsville, and David R. of North Kingsville; a grandson, Dave L. of Berea; and a brother, Robert Van Slyke of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eloise Lynn; and a brother, Hugh Ellsworth Van Slyke.
Service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at the family gravesite in Eastlake Cemetery, North Kingsville. The Rev. Christine Stracham, pastor of North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to North Kingsville Presbyterian Church, 6546 Church St., P.O. Box 299, North Kingsville, 44068.
Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.

Earl Frasure Sr
KINGSVILLE ­ Earl Frasure Sr., 86, of Tivision Place, Ashtabula, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
He was born April 3, 1915, in McDowell, Ky., the son of Oliver and Margaret (Reynolds) Frasure and had been an Ashtabula resident since 1956.
Prior to his retirement in 1977, he worked for Rockwell Plastics. He previously worked for Elkem Metals and as a security guard at True Temper. Before moving to Ashtabula, he worked 20 years as a coal miner in McDowell.
Mr. Frasure was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God and loved gardening, hunting and his family.
Survivors include eight sons, Roy, Vern and Roger, all of Ashtabula, Ottis of McDowell, Audie of Michigan City, Ind., Earl Jr. and Eugene, both of Jefferson, and Danen of Painesville; five daughters, Hollie Patton, Earlean Maple and Freda Frasure, all of Ashtabula, Betty Hungerford of Sheffield Township and Bonnie Stillwell of Conneaut; 48 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wade and Moses, both of McDowell; and a sister, Elizabeth Hall of McDowell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith (Howell); one son, George Frasure; four grandchildren, Wendell Frasure, Lisa Frasure, Frank Patton Jr. and Tommy Hungerford; one great-grandchild, Heather Frasure; two brothers, Ray and Ted Frasure; and his parents.
A service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Pentecostal Church of God, 2201 Cook Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Kenneth Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, is in charge of arrangements.
