Veline Scott

12/27/1950 - 04/09/2013

Veline "Vee" Loretha (Battles) Scott, age 62 years, four months, and thirteen days, and a long-time resident of Konawa, Okla. passed away at home on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 following a year-long battle with cancer.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 12th at the Assembly of God Church in Konawa under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa. Rev. Steve Lowrance and Rev. Mitch Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Arpelar Cemetery in Pittsburg County.

Pallbearers are Eddy Scott, Waymon Scott, Tyler Scott, Jordan Moery, Frank Battles, Don Holland, and Trenton Scott.

Honorary Pallbearers are Zeb Bowles and Don Ramsey.

The family will gather to receive guests at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 11th.

Vee was born on Dec. 27, 1950 in McAlester, Okla. to Clinton and Reva (Howell) Battles.

Vee was reared near Haywood, Okla. where she attended school. She graduated with the class of 1969 from Haywood High School, and she graduated from Draughons Business College in Tulsa, Okla.

She married Kenneth Scott on Feb. 14, 1970 in McAlester, Okla.

Following their marriage, they resided in Oklahoma cities of Oklahoma City, Konawa, and Pawnee before returning to Konawa in 1994.

Vee worked as a legal secretary and a secretary for the oil and gas industry.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Konawa where she served numerous roles for many years and most recently served as the Church Secretary/Treasurer.

She loved her grandchildren, and called them her "grandies". She spent much of her time attending their dance recitals, football games, basketball and softball games as well as wrestling matches, pig show, church programs, field trips and any other activity in which they were involved.

She also loved cooking and watching Star Trek.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of forty-three years, Kenneth Scott of the home; two sons, Eddy Scott and wife, Tracey of Mannford, Okla., and Waymon Scott and wife, Jamie of Konawa, Okla.; one daughter, Tawana Holland and husband, Don of Tecumseh, Okla.; one brother, Frank Battles and wife, Ivy of Coweta, Okla.; nine grandchildren, Jordan Moery, Allison Moery, Kimberly Holland, Tyler Scott, Payton Scott, Trenton Scott, Raegan Scott, Jaley Scott, and Reese Scott; and numerous extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clinton and Reva Battles and two brothers, Roby Battles and Pete Shaddy.

The family has asked that donations be made to Stephenson Cancer Center, Oklahoma City, Okla. or the Konawa Assembly of God Church of Konawa.

Johnnie Scroggins

Johnnie "Glenda" Scroggins passed away Friday, October 18th, 2013 at 4:30 a.m. at the age of 67 years after a long battle of cancer at her home in Wewoka. She attended Wewoka and Muskogee schools. She also attended C.N.A. H. HA and phlebotomy training.

She had a very outgoing personality and a great sense of humor. Glenda took care of everyone at work and home. She loved her family and friends dearly and would do anything she could for them. She loved too cook for us Sunday dinners. It seems like she woke up with a skillet in her hand.

Glenda fell in love with Lloyd Scroggins and they were married November 16, 1962 at New Life Church. Their love was blessed with two children and she raised her grandson. So many of her special friends, her personality and kindness and the special love for her family, made her so greatly loved by all. She and her sister Evelyn ran Berry's Waffle House and later opened a dress shop up in Wewoka.

She will be greatly missed by all who got to share in her life, while quietly surrounded by her family and friends daily. Glenda made her transition from this life to Eternal Peace on Friday morning, October 18, 2013.

She is preceded in death by her parents O.T. and Myrtel Burns; sister Evelyn Burns.

She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband of 50 years Lloyd Scroggins of the home; daughters Connie Scroggins and Terry Smith of Wewoka; one son Larry Scroggins and wife Rita, whom she claimed as a daughter; grandson Chad Smith that she raised and daughter-in -law, Brandi Smith; grandchildren Trevor Marshall, Kristin Scroggins, Hailey Scroggins, Laikyn Scroggins, Lexie Scroggins: two great grandchildren Cayman Smith, Caleigh Smith, one great-great granddaughter Addlie Scroggins.

Pallbearers will be Terry Smith, Trevor Marshall, Chuck Vance, Stacee Roberts, and Dakota Darr.

Honorary bearers will be, David Calvert, Jimmy Calvert, Max Smith, and Larry Sawyer.

A Celebration of life was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 21, 2013 at New Life Church in Wewoka with Rev. Sam Ketcher and Pastor Tommy Azlin officiating, and her final resting place is at Oakwood Cemetery.

James Seavey

James C. Seavey, age 42 of El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain, died Nov. 28, 2013, as a result of a car accident.

He was born Oct. 24, 1971, the son of John and Elaine (Langlais) Seavey, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

James graduated from Seminole High School in Seminole, Class of 1989.

After high school, James served six years in the U.S Navy, spending most of his service time in Rota, Spain.

He married Esther Romero-Silva on Aug. 18, 1995 in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain.

He graduated with a B.A. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland and worked for 20 years as an IT Systems Administrator.

James was never so happy as when he was in the outdoors with family and friends.

He was always eager to try new things and see new places and was a man with an inquisitive mind and a loving and tender heart, especially for his children.

He touched so many people in his life and we will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Romero; a daughter, Christina Jade; two sons, Adrian James and Leonardo; his parents, John and Elaine Seavey of St. Albans, Maine; two siblings, John and his wife Dawnita (Hagler) of Athens, Tenn.; Stephanie Gottwald and her husband Matthias of Amesbury, Maine; nieces and nephews, Maria, Lydia, Mason, and Conner; his mother-in-law, Estrella Silva Dominguez; grandmothers Fern Langlais and Virginia Seavey of Dexter, Maine and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of James’ life will be held Sunday, Dec. 22 at 3 p.m. at the home of James’ parents, John and Elaine Seavey, PO Box 172, Saint Albans, ME, 04971.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the James Seavey Memorial Fund. Proceeds from this fund will help cover funeral expenses; any funds left over will be rolled into a college account for James’ young children. Hershel Self

Hershel Self, 71, longtime Bowlegs resident died, Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 in Seminole, Okla.

Hershel was born James Hershel Self on Feb. 1, 1942 in Paden, Okla. to Leonard Clifford and Jane Ellen (Myers) Self.

Hershel grew up in the Bowlegs and Seminole area. He attended and graduated from Bowlegs Public Schools.

While in school he served as his class president and received academic honors.

He started his career as a rancher at the early age of 16 and spent his life ranching.

Later he became a drilling superintendent in the Seminole oilfields, working with Sloan Drilling Company of Seminole, and later with Ackerman Drilling Company of Konawa, Okla.

Hershel was very active in the Bowlegs community; he served on the Bowlegs School Board, he loved and attended all sporting activities of Bowlegs Schools and was active in the Bowlegs Alumni Association.

He loved the outdoors, his family and friends, land, riding horses and raising racehorses.

His first love of ranching led him to receive the Seminole Cattleman of the year award in 2005 from the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association of which he was a member.

Hershel married Billie Dean (Smith) on June 12, 1991 in Ada, Okla.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Self of the home; two sons, Jimmy Self of Bowlegs, Okla. and Randy Self of Collinsville, Okla.; two daughters, Natalie O’Dell of Konawa, Okla. and Paula Walraven of Alvarado, Tex.; one step son, Seth Ramsey of Bethel, Okla. and a step-daughter Shelly Cascavilla of Lamar, Okla.

He is also survived by one brother, Jerry Self of Bowlegs; two sisters, Glenda Irene Bryant of Sasakwa, Okla. and Kellean Kerr of Norman, Okla.; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

His parents and two brothers, Larry Self, Clifford Self and Leonard Clifton Self preceded him in death.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial will take place at Little Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and family at a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013.

Casket bearers will be Jep Daniel, Jack Daniel, Lance King, Kenny King, Alan Ackerman, and Brandon Ramsey.

Honorary Bearers will be Kenneth King, Elza Rodgers, Zane Smith, Jim Chadick, Bob Northcott, Don McKee, Billy Ray Self and Kenneth Self.

Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole, Oklahoma is in charge of arrangements.

Leo Self

Graveside services for Wewoka resident Leo James Self are scheduled for 1:00 pm Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Azlin officiating.

He died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013 at his home in Wewoka after long battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 27, 1954 in Wewoka to Garland "Chick" Self and Wanda (Vigus) Self.

He graduated from Modesto High School in California.

He worked many years as a roughneck in the oil field.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Self.

Survivors include his father, Garland (Chick) Self; children Christina Self of Clear Lake Calif., Joshua Self of Panama Fla., R.J. Derhammer of Mo., and Jessica Derhammer of Michigan; and one grandchild.

Arrangements are by Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka.

Virginia Self

Virginia Diane Self, longtime Earlsboro resident died April 18, 2013 at the age of 60.

She was born Nov. 14, 1952 in Ariz. to Vernon and Mary (Vickery) Mehring.

She graduated from Capital Hill High School in Oklahoma City then went on to work and retired from Tinker Air Force Base.

She is survived by three sons, Darrell Mehring of Earlsboro, Okla., Elton Kelsay of Earlsboro, Okla. and David Fraizer of Shawnee, Okla.; one daughter, Virginia Maupin of Tecumseh, Okla.; one brother, Rodney D. Mehring of Earlsboro, Okla.; one sister, Terry Mehring of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren

She is preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Vickery) Stafford, step-father, Emmett Stafford; and her father, Vernon Mehring.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 22, 2013 at Holdenville City Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Maxine Sharber

01/19/1930 - 10/03/2013

Maxine (Allgood) Sharber of Konawa, Okla., went to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday morning, Oct. 3, 2013 at her residence in Konawa at the age of 83 years.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at the Vamoosa Baptist Church under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Konawa. Burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery, and George Marty Brock will officiate.

Pallbearers are Bo Sharber, Kirk Redeker, Eric Granger, Anthony Waldroup, Jason Nunley, Zachary Waldroup, and Jackson Granger.

Honorary pallbearers are Dan Khoury, Elmo Phillips, and C. L. Bounds.

Maxine was born on Jan. 19, 1930 in Hazel, Okla. to John Allgood and Ruby (Mathis) Allgood.

She married Jack Sharber on March 17, 1945 in Seminole, Okla., and to this union, three children were born.

Mrs. Sharber was member of the Vamoosa Baptist Church.

She loved working with her cattle and dogs and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her three children, John Sharber and wife, Claudia of Konawa, Susie and Albert Nunley of Checotah, Okla., and Billy Jack Sharber of Konawa; grandchildren, Sheri Porter, Michael Nunley, Jason Nunley, Candice Sharber Waldroup, Misty Sharber Granger, Tie Sharber Redeker, and Bo Sharber; 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, John Allgood and Ruby Mann; her husband, Jack Sharber on March 17, 1987, and her great granddaughter, Sheena Booth on Oct. 4, 2006.
