Johnny Lee Porter

Disabled Vietnam Vet Loses Battle

A Seminole County Vietnam veteran, remembered by some as a "hero" and an inspiration, gave up his battle for life on Sunday, May 16, 2004, in a Tulsa nursing home.

Johnny Lee Porter, 56, was wounded in Vietnam in the late 1960s, just after graduation from New Lima High School, and spent his life as a paraplegic.

"He’s a special guy, " said his friend, Steve Harris of Tennessee.

"He’s gone through so much."

It’s been nearly five years since Harris came to the newspaper, asking for the attention he believed his friend deserved.

"Nobody seems to go see him, but he enjoys life so much anyway, " Harris said.

"I ask him ‘Why aren’t you mad?’ but he won’t let his condition bother me.

"He tries to cheer me up.

"This man should be a local hero…at least he’s my hero.

"People should go out there and hug him and thank him, " Harris said five years ago.

Porter refused the attention Harris requested for him, not allowing his name to be used in Harris’ story.

And, although Harris’ tribute could have been given for any number of Vietnam vets, Porter’s attitude and personality did much to inspire those who knew him.

His old war buddies from all over the US annually to see him.

They watched as Porter’s condition degenerated from wheelchair to bedfast to a nursing home.

"Things I take for granted aren’t even possible for him, " Harris said.

"I bitch about a headache…he’s ticked to just read a newspaper."

Both Harris and Porter joined the Marines just after high school, each celebrating their 19th birthdays in Vietnam.

"You wouldn’t believe the bonding that occurs there (in war), " Harris said.

They went into the military at a time when it wasn’t a popular thing to do – Harris drafted, Porter volunteering.

"It’s what happened then if you weren’t in college and didn’t have money or politics."

Porter was born Jan. 7, 1948 in Wewoka to Pearl (Bearden) and Raymond LeRoy Porter.

"Johnny served in Vietnam with great honors, gladly serving and sacrificing for his country, " his family said in his obituary.

He married Linda Marie Shorter on June 10, 1978, in Wewoka; she survives him of the home.

"Linda has loved and devoted her life to John’s care, " his family added.

Porter was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Lou; two brothers, Willie "Corky" and Ronnie Porter.

Other survivors include his son, Michael Porter, of the home; one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby J. and Wanda Porter of Wewoka; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose Ann and Joe Pinkston, Oklahoma City, and Patty and Don Moore, Wewoka; and the two special "brothers" who served with him in Vietnam, Harris and Danny Thompson, Florida.

"Johnny’s humor and bright smile will be missed by all who knew him, " his family said.

Porter’s funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hilltop Free Will Baptist Church in Wewoka.

Rev. Russell Ryker, pastor, and Rev. Dale Shorter of Fort Worth Texas, will officiate.

Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will include Harris, Thompson, Terry and Chad Hall, Hubert Shorter and Steve Bryant.

Honorary pallbearers will include John Pinkston, Rick Hall, George Porter, Basil Johnson and Jackie Shorter.
