Charles L. 'Chick' Eby Sr.
MIFFLINTOWN - Charles L. "Chick" Eby Sr., 88, of Pine Creek Personal Care Home, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Quigley Heights, Mifflintown, died at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 4, 1913, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Herman J. and Mary J. (Bingaman) Eby. His wife, Christiana R. (Derr) Eby, died April 2, 1985. Surviving are: children, C. Leonard Eby Jr., 617 Freedom Ave., Burnham, James E. Eby, Old Route 22, Mifflintown, Richard M. Eby, Second Street, Yeagertown, and Maryann Eby, Harrisburg; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. He worked in the steam plant at Standard Steel, Burnham for 26 years, retiring in 1978. From 1952-1982, he was also employed at Heller's Funeral Homes at Woodlawn and Burnham. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. He was also a member of the United Steelworker's No. 1940; a life member of the Fame, City, Hook and Ladder and Brooklyn Fire Companies; and a charter member of Cornbinders of Fame Fire Company. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. William S. Esborn officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Mifflin-Juniata American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Ralph Eugene Eckley
ROGERSVILLE, AL - Ralph Eugene Eckley, 85, of Rogersville, AL, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at his residence. Born Dec. 12, 1916, in Spruce Creek, he was the son of the late John and Lottie H. (Belles) Eckley. His wife, Bridgett Erna Eckley, survives. Also surviving are: children, Michael George Eckley, Huntsville, AL, and Monica Lottie (Eckley) Mauk, Huntsville, AL; brothers, Paul Eckley, Pittsburgh, Elwood Eckley, Pittsburgh, Homer Eckley, Lewistown; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eileen, and seven brothers, John, Charles, Earnest, George, James, Warren and Robert. He was a graduate of Milroy High School. In 1940 he enlisted in the N.G. Service Battery 939 PA BN, Lewistown, and served in five campaigns, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arne, Rhineland, Northern Appennines and Central Europe, where he received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Croix De Guerre with Silver Gilt, Star American Defense Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and the Victor Medal. He was discharged from the Army after 21 years having served from 1940-1961. He worked for the civil service from 1962-1977, and later worked at the Huntsville Missile Center. He was also the catcher for the all nine Eckley brothers baseball team in the late 30's. His graveside service and will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA., with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Ruth M. Eckley
LEWISTOWN - Ruth M. Eckley, 88, of 15 Ridge Road, Lewistown, died at 1:13 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, 163 Summit Drive, Lewistown. Born April 6, 1913 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Wilmont and Alice (Collier) Corson. Her husband Charles T. Eckley preceded her in death in 1984. Surviving are: a son, Charles R. Renninger, 15 Ridge Road, Lewistown; brothers and a sister, Martha Albright, Charles Corson, David Corson and Bill Corson, all of Lewistown, and William Corson, Alfarata; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorma Herbster Wagner, in 1990 and by three granddaughters. She was a homemaker and earlier in life was employed in the reeling department of the American Viscose Corp. She was a Presbyterian by faith. She was a member of the Lewistown Moose Lodge Auxiliary. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mifflin County Library, 123 N. Wayne St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Harry E. Elder
MIFFLIN - Harry E. Elder, 87, of Foster St., Mifflin, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Hershey Medical Center. Born Feb. 17, 1914, in Mifflin, he was a son of the late Harry O. and Elizabeth Elder. His wife, Sarah A. (Ritter) Elder, preceded him in death on August 27, 1972. Surviving are: two sons, Harry C. Elder, Houtzdale, and Donald Elder, Mechanicsburg, a daughter, Eileen Heller, Milton, three stepsons, Donnie Paul Bailey, James Bailey and Clyde Bailey, all of New Jersey, and a stepdaughter, Shirley Bailey, New Jersey; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in WW II. He was a iron worker on construction working with Local 404 and a member of Brooklyn Hose Company, Lewistown. He enjoyed model trains, collecting coins and baseball cards, and bred collector pigeons. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the REv. David Cook officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Mifflintown, where military honors will be provided by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. 4th St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to SPCA, RR1, Centre Hall, PA 16828.

Velma Ruth Ellingsworth
Velma Ruth Ellingsworth, 80, of Seanor, died Oct. 17, 2001. Born Sept. 12, 1921,in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Myrtle (Smith) Brackbill. Her husband of 55 years, Lewis, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Marlin (Sharon) Weber, Johnstown and James R., Shippensburg; sisters and brothers, Vera Harpster, Earl Brackbill, Elmer Brackbill, Roberta Kepner, Edna Lauver, Anna Fry, Rachael Weaver, Mildred Hendricks and Dorene Adams; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Albert, Raymond and George Brackbill. She was a 1943 graduate of the Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing, a retired registered nurse and an avid quilter. She was a member of the Scalp Level Trinity United Methodist Church, Windber, where her funeral service was held Oct. 20. Entombment was in the Richland Mausoleum.

Elsie Berryman Elliott
LEWISTOWN - Elsie Berryman Elliott, 83, of 4C West Spanogle Ave., Lewistown, died at 5:35 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Valley View Haven, Belleville. Born May 23, 1917, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Ruth R. (McCord) Berryman. Her husband, G. Andrew Elliott, died Oct. 29, 1965. She is survived by a brother and a sister, C. William Berryman, Lewistown and Mrs. Harvey W. (Frances) Gilbert Jr., 325 King Lane, Belleville. She was preceded in death by one sister. She graduated with honors from Lewistown High School in 1933. She was a secretary for Glick Brothers Shoes Inc., retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Yeagertown and the Retirees of the Church. She was also a member of the Young at Heart Group, the former Pensioneers Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Philip C. Tundel officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown. There will be no viewing, but family will receive friends 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Holy Communion Lutheran Church, North Main Street, Yeagertown, PA 17099.

Jason Robert Ellis
MIDDLEBURG - Jason Robert Ellis, 26, of Middleburg RR1, died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center. Born July 24, 1974, in Brockport, NY, he was the son of Edward Ellis of Middleburg RR1 and Donna Whipple, Kent, NY. He is also survived by his fiancee, Jennifer L. Knepp of Beaver Springs RR1. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mackenzie Jalynn Ellis; brother and sister, Ezra Ellis, Middleburg RR1 and Katrina Ellis, Medina, NY; maternal grandfather, Robert Fischer, Albion, NY; maternal grandmother, Rita Long, Houston, Texas; and maternal great-grandmother, Helen Porter, Elba, NY. He attended Kendall High School, Kendall, Ny. He was employed as a carpenter for Professional Builders, Middleburg. Prior to that, he had worked for Penn Lyon Homes, Selinsgrove and JBK Services, Millmont. He played pool for the Town Tavern, Middleburg in the Snyder County Pool League, for the Mifflinburg Legion in the American Legion League and for Valley House in the APA Monday Night League. He was also a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, pool, and the Keister cabin. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Adamsburg Cemetery, Beaver Springs, with the Rev. Liane Wagner officiating. Friends may call 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aurand Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown.

Kathryn N. Ellis
MIFFLINTOWN - Kathryn N. Ellis, 92, of 410 Orange St., Mifflintown, died at 10:10 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 30, 1908, in Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Emma (Neimond) Watts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart A. Ellis Sr., on March 10, 1990. She is survived by children, Mrs. Eugene (Esther) Rhine and Roberta J. Ellis, both of Mifflintown, Ruth O'Neal, Port Royal, Mrs. Lee (Connie) Quigley, Mifflintown RR1, and Steward A. Ellis Jr., Lewistown; a grandchild, whom she raised, Kathy Huss, York; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family and was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Arnold and one great-grandson, Todd Clark. She was a homemaker and Protestant by faith. She was an avid bingo player. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Mifflintown Hose Co. No. 1, 510 Washington Ave., Mifflintown, PA 17059.
