Ada M. Mateer
MILROY - Ada M. Mateer, 90, of 10 Sundown Lane, Milroy, died at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her residence.

Born April 17, 1909, in Milroy, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Foster and Bessie (Worrell) Hoar. Her husband, Vyrl O. Mateer, died June 6, 1980.

She is survived by a brother, Foster R. "Ray" Hoar, Milroy.

She was preceded in death by sister and brothers, Sylvia Aurand, Lee Hoar, and Glenn Hoar.

She was a 1927 graduate of Milroy High School.

Early in life, she was a teacher in a one-room school house for several years and later worked in the cake converting department of the American Viscose Corporation, Lewistown.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Milroy for 78 years and a member of the Royal Neighbors.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Rosalie N. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy.

There will be no public viewing.

Kenneth B. 'Ken' Matter
MILLERSTOWN - Kenneth B. "Ken" Matter, 56, of Millerstown RR2, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 1999, at his residence.

Born May 11, 1942, in Loganton, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Armina (Stamm) Matter. His wife, Donna L. (Travitz) Matter, whom he married Aug. 10, 1968, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Matthew W. Matter and Melissa S. Matter, both at home, and Mrs. Shawn E. (Melanie L.) Brown, Richfield RR1; brothers and sister, Boyd Matter, Millerstown RR2, Robert Matter, Halifax, Warren Matter and Mrs. Ronald (Alice) Miller, both of Liverpool; and one granddaughter.

He was a 1960 graduate of the Milton S. Hershey High School.

He was a veteran having served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was an expert pistol and sharpshooter (rifle) during his military service.

He was employed as a truck driver at Juniata Concrete Company and had worked for a short time at Fenner Trucking Inc., Mifflintown. Prior to that, he also worked as a truck driver for 30 years for Hempt Brothers Inc., Camp Hill.

He was an active member of the Turkey Valley United Methodist Church, Millerstown RR2, where he taught Sunday school and was a Promise Keeper. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 364, Liverpool; the Greenwood Grange, Millerstown RR2,; and the Liverpool Ambulance League.

He enjoyed working on cars, rebuilding John Deere tractors, and hunting.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Turkey Valley United Methodist Church, Millerstown RR2, with the Rev. Salvatore E. Buonocore officiating. Interment will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Millerstown RR2, with full military honors conducted by the American Legion, Post 364, Liverpool.

Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church.

The George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., 606 N. Front St., Liverpool, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert J. Mattern
LITITZ - Robert J. Mattern, 57, of 739 Furnace Hill Pike, Lititz, formerly of Lewistown, died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the Lancaster General Hospital.

Born April 9, 1943, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late William and Reba (Fisher) Mattern. His wife, Constance "Connie" (Brumbaugh) Mattern, whom he married Oct. 19, 1964, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Barry (Kimbra Ann) Gingrich, Robert J.Mattern II; a brother, Herbert Mattern, East Petersburg; and two grandchildren.

He attended Lewistown High School.

He worked for Burnham Steel, Lancaster until 1968, when he was disabled as a result of an auto accident.

He enjoyed sports and cars.

Services will be held at 8:30 p.m. today at the Spacht Funeral Home, 127 S. Broad St., Lititz, with the Rev. Stephen Wordwell officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.

Friends may call from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Irene Mauery
STATE COLLEGE - Irene Mauery, 92, formerly of 10 Smoke House Lane, Lewistown, died at 11:09 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Centre County Community Hospital, State College.

Born March 5, 1907, in Osceola, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John Kirk and Ann Skelton. Her husband, Rine Mauery, died May 4, 1956.

Surviving are: children, Donald R. Mauery of Kansas, Nancy Knepp of Lewistown and Mrs. George (Ann) Johnstone of Moorestown, N.J.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

She worked at the Central Supply Department of the Lewistown Hospital before retirement.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lewistown, and the Sunday School Class of Happy Workers.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Barr Funeral Home, Lewistown, with the Rev. Gerald Krum officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Fern C. Maurer
THOMPSONTOWN - Fern C. Maurer, 81, of Thompsontown RR1, died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg.

Born Oct. 13, 1917, in Perry County, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Pearl (Burrell) Clouser. Her husband, Kenneth L. Maurer, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Richard L. Maurer, Newport, Doris Maurer, Reading, and Pauline March, Long Island; a sister, May Beard, Havre de Grace, Md.; and four grandchildren.

She was a member of Locust Run United Methodist Church, Thompsontown, and she enjoyed camping.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with the Rev. Maureen Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

James C. Mayes
LEWISTOWN - James C. Mayes, 39, of 234 Third St., Pleasant Acres, Lewistown, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at his residence.

Born July 23, 1959, in Lewistown, he was a son of Tom and Belle Ann (Betlyon) Mayes of Lewistown. His wife, Terry L. (Silks) Mayes, whom he married April 22, 1989, survives.

Also surviving are: children, James C. Mayes II and Holly M. Mayes, both of Sterling Heights, Mich., Jacob D. Mayes, Nathan M. Mayes, and Casey L. Knepp, all at home; brothers and sisters, Vicki L. Fultz and Nancy J. Wilt, both of Lewistown, Bea Burke, Mechanicsburg, Daniel S. Mayes, Fayetteville, and David M. Mayes, Pine Grove.

He was a graduate of Chief Logan High School Class of 1978.

He served in the United States Army.

He was an officer with Mifflin County Regional Police Force, where he specialized in accident reconstruction.

He attended Kish Valley Grace Brethren Church, Reedsville, and was a member of Kops 4 Kids Action Committee.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Douglas D. Sabin officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville.

Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Myrtle L. McCallips
KENNEBUNK, Maine - Myrtle L. McCallips, 81, resident of Renaissance Nursing Home, Biddeford, Maine, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at the home.

Born March 29, 1918, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Henry V. and Clara L. (Houser) McCallips.

Surviving are several cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold McCallips in 1943.

She was a 1936 graduate of McVey High School.

She attended Village Baptist Church in Kennebunkport, Maine.

She loved animals and enjoyed gardening.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown.

Family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. today at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 647 Summer St., Kennebunk, Maine.

Van S. McCardle
STRAUSBURG, Va. - Van S. McCardle, 91, of 214 Sharpe St., Strausburg, Va., died at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.

Born Feb. 7, 1908, in Yeagertown, he was the son of the late John Henry and Mary E. (Knepp) McCardle. His wife, Catherine Florence (Reisinger) McCardle, died in 1993.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Danny (Dolores A.) Inlow, Hartwell, Ga.; a son, Russell V. McCardle, Laurel, Md.; a brother, Roy R. McCardle, Middleburg; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: seven brothers, Arch, Ike, Russell, Jay, William B., Woodrow, and Earl McCardle; and four sisters, Lillian Tindal, Dolly Smith, Margaret Baker, and Violet Rishel.

He retired from FMC Corporation in Front Royal, Va.

He was Lutheran by faith and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Hummel Funeral Home, Middleburg.
