Alice Marie Strawser
MILLERSTOWN - Alice Marie Strawser, 75, of Millerstown RR2, Monroe Township, Juniata County, died at 12:23 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. She had been in ill health for the past six months. Born Aug. 19, 1925, in Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Frances (Burkheister) Strawser-Nace. Her husband, Sherman Lester Strawser, whom she married Jan. 18, 1944, survives. Also surviving are: children, Earl M. Strawser, Millerstown, Mrs. Joel (Ellen P.) Carvell, Richfield RR1, and Wannetta K. Leonard, Honey Grove; half-sisters, Anna Mae Duke and Mary Ethel Zeiders, both of Mifflintown, Ella Goodling, Richfield RR1, Mrs. Robert (Kathryn) Mull, Selinsgrove and Mrs. George (Dorothy) Cramer, Carlisle; half-brothers, Donald Nace, Lewistown, and Glenn Nace, Richfield RR1; a foster sister, Mrs. Chester (Mary) Bitterman, Lancaster; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by foster parents, Ralph and Sadie Witmer, and by a half-brother, John Strawser. She was educated at the Lancaster Mennonite school. She worked at the Richfield and Liverpool shirt factories, and as a nursing assistant at the Nipple Convalescent Home, Liverpool and the Zendt Home, Richfield. She attended the Church of the Open Door, Richfield RR1. She enjoyed canning, reading her Bible and spending time with her family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Open Door, Richfield RR1, with the Rev. Joseph R. Heeg officiating. Interment will be in Neimond's Cemetery, Richfield RR1. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Miriam Delphina Ulsh Summy
MILLERSTOWN - Miriam Delphina Ulsh Summy, 89, of Millerstown, died at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, where she had resided for the past six weeks. Born Aug. 4, 1911 in Millerstown, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Selma (Branyan) Ulsh. Her husband Hoyd E. Summy, whom she married May 21, 1928, preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1963. Surviving are: twin daughters; Janice Y. Faust, Thompsontown and Joan Y. Long, Liverpool RR2, step-children; Jeffrey Faust, Joel Faust, Jason Faust and Dana Boskich, a brother; Lewis Ulsh, Waynesboro, six step-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter. She graduated from Millerstown High School and attended the former West Chester State Teachers College. She worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for three years prior to marriage. She was a homemaker who assisted her husband in his business, the Medico Press, a printing business in Millerstown, until her husband's death in 1963. She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church, Millerstown, now the Highland United Presbyterian Church, Newport, were she was a deaconess and taught Sunday school for many years. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Highland United Presbyterian Church, Newport, with the Rev. Edward W. Baugh officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Highland United Presbyterian Church, PO Box 116, Newport, PA 17074, or to the Blessed Hope Bible church, RR2 Box 374, Liverpool, PA 17045.

Harvey L. Swartz
RICHFIELD - Harvey L. Swartz, age 77, of Richfield RR1, died at 11:19 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in the emergency room at Sunbury Community Hospital. Born Aug. 2, 1923 in Richfield, he was the son of the late Chester and Jennie (Hupp) Swartz. His first wife, Florence (Shrawder) Swartz, died in 1976. His second wife, Ruth (Swartz) Swartz, whom he married in 1983, survives. Also surviving are: stepchildren, S. Tom Auker, Dauphin, Christopher C. Auker, Richfield, Mrs. Larry (Patricia L.) Arbogast and Mrs. Dennis (Debra R.) Ulrich, both of Selinsgrove, and Mrs. Kenneth (Vivian D.) Seiler, Mount Joy; sisters, Gladys Kline, Selinsgrove RR1, Beatrice Lawrence, New Cumberland, Alice Hoffman, Mount Pleasant Mills, and Marguerite Kerstetter, Richfield RR1; and six step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Gilbert Swartz, Oscar Swartz, Marian Hummel, and Emma Swartz. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart and three Bronze Service Stars. He was the owner and operator of the Swartz Equipment Company, Richfield RR1, which he founded in 1948. He was a member of Brown's United Methodist Church, Cocolamus and a member of the Usher's Club of the church. He was also a member of the Free & Accepted Masonic Lodge 324, Mifflintown; the Harrisburg Consistory; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Juniata Valley Forest 88; the American Legion Post 298, Mifflintown; the Moose Lodge 925, Millerstown; a charter member and past president of the Richfield Lions Club; a life member of the Purple Heart, Lt. George Ramer Chapter 656, Lewisburg; the Juniata County Farm Bureau; and the Northeast Equipment Dealers Association. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Brown's United Methodist Church, Cocolamus, with the Rev. Ronald Landis officiating. Interment will be in the Richfield Union Cemetery, where military rites will also be given. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills and from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Brown's United Methodist Building Fund, RR2, Box 2395, McAlisterville, PA 17049.

Kassidy Grace Swartz
MEXICO - Kassidy Grace Swartz, infant daughter of Michael L. and Liza M. (Krepps) Swartz of Mexico, was stillborn at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandmother, Beverly (Imes) Swartz, Mifflintown HC 67, and her maternal grandparents, Terry L. and Cindy E. (O'Neal) Krepps, Thompsontown RR2. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Jack D. Twombly officiating. Interment will be in Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown RR2. There will be no viewing. Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline E. Swartz
WALNUT - Pauline E. Swartz, 93, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin HC-67, and formerly of Walnut, died at 3:05 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at the village. Born Dec. 14, 1906, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late James and Ellen (Hart) Long. Her husband, G. Dale Swartz, preceded her in death Dec. 20, 1999. Surviving are: a twin sister, Helen Irene Kennedy, Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC-67, Mifflin, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Beaver in 1992. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nook, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Beale Township Fire Company. She retired as a seamstress from the Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown, and earlier had worked at the McAlisterville Sewing Factory. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Marton Roberson officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Nook. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Locust Grove, HC-67, Box 7, Mifflin, PA 17058.

Ray Leroy Swartz
MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS - Ray Leroy Swartz, 74, of Mount Pleasant Mills RR1, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at his residence, following an illness of two years. Born July 8, 1926, in Juniata County, he was the son of the late Leroy Z. and Sadie (Moyer) Swartz. His wife, Jeanetta R. (Troup) Swartz, who he married March 18, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Donald M. (Lorna J.) Hockenbroch, Mount Pleasant Mills RR1 and Peggy J. Rathfon, Lewisburg; brothers, Vincent Swartz, Port Royal and Byrant Swartz, Millerstown RR2; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Allison Jean Hockenbroch; two brothers, Clyde Swartz and Moyer David Swartz; and one sister, Evelyn Shaffer. He was educated in Millerstown schools. He served in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class in the Headquarters Detachment, 1321st Area Service Unit. He was employed in the engine house for the former Pennsylvania Railroad, Enola yards for 18 years. He was also a farmer for most of his life and a Perry Township supervisor for over 32 years. He was road foreman until his death. He was a member of the St. Thomas Independent Brethren in Christ Church, Mount Pleasant Mills RR2, where he was a Sunday school teacher, youth advisor, former board member and member of the board of trustees. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, and the Snyder County Township Association. He enjoyed metal detecting and hunting, especially bear. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Independent Brethren in Christ Church, Mount Pleasant Mills RR2, with the Rev. Roger L. Womer officiating. Interment will be in the Aline United Methodist Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills RR1. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: VNA Northumberland County Hospice, 21 W. Independent St., Shamokin, Pa 17872. The George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Tyler L. Swartz
CARLISLE - Tyler L. Swartz, 3 1/2, of 16 Buck Drive, Carlisle, formerly of Lewistown, died Tuesday evening July 11, 2000, near his home from a drowning accident. Born Dec. 8, 1996, in Lewistown, he was the son of Terry L. and Desiree K. (Morgan) Swartz of Carlisle. He is also survived by maternal grandparents, Melody Groff, Newport, and Lauris G. Morgan, Carlisle; paternal grandparents, Mary A. Gardner, Lewistown and Mervin L. Swartz, Selinsgrove; maternal great-grandparents, June F. Pepper, St. Augustine, Fla. and Frank Morgan, Canton; paternal great-grandparents, Pearl V. Heckert, New Bloomfield, and Florence E. Kreider, Mifflintown; maternal step-grandfather, Kevin L. Groff, Newport; paternal step-grandmother, Bonnie K. Fidler, Selinsgrove; and paternal step-grandfather, Clyde E. Gardner Sr., Newport. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rex Funeral Home, 308 Market St., Port Royal, with Pastor Ray G. Hackett of Millersburg officiating. Interment will be in Locust Run Cemetery, Walker Township, Juniata County. Visitation with closed casket will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Earl E. 'Bud' Swartzell
GRANVILLE - Earl E. "Bud" Swartzell, 79, a resident of the Malta Home for the Aging, Granville, formerly of Millheim, Centre County, died at 4:25 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the home. Born Aug. 31, 1921, in Millheim, he was a son of the late Earl B. and Martha (Musser) Swartzell. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jesse (Angeline) Barger, West Fourth Street, Lewistown and two grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family. He served as an aerial gunnery instructor in the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre. In early life, he was a salesman for Construction Equipment Company, Salem, Ore.; worked in sales for Harvestore in the Lewistown area; and was employed at the Navy Ships Control Center, Mechanicsburg for 13 years. He was a member of the State College Elks Lodge 1600 and the Millheim American Legion Post 444. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Kenneth W. Longfield officiating. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no public viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to HOSPICE: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
