Barbara D. Krawitz
(October 14, 1931 - August 22, 2015)

Barbara D. Krawitz of Stroudsburg died on August 22, 2015, at the age of 83. She was born, October 14, 1931, and raised in Philadelphia, the only child of the late Isador K. Dortort and Minnie (Portner) Dortort who died when Barbara was a little girl.

As a student and young woman, Barbara was an aspiring pianist and studied fine arts, enabling her to develop a keen, tasteful eye for color, design and beauty which graced our home and family. She was quietly and cleverly creative, earning a degree in fine arts from the Temple University Tyler School of Art.

Barbara was an intensely private person, an attractive opposite to the outgoing personality of her eventual husband, whom she met while he was a law student in Philadelphia. She had, along the way, acquired good clerical and office skills which proved particularly useful, becoming her new husband’s first legal secretary in their upstairs apartment/office above a retail establishment on South Sixth Street, Stroudsburg, in 1957, where they also started a family. Her beloved Husband, Edwin Krawitz, Esq., preceded her in death by three weeks, and just one week short of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Barbara lovingly dedicated herself to her husband and two children in the traditional role of wife, mother and chief of staff, rather than to individual pursuits. Her always-behind-the-scenes volunteer work in various organizations further supported her children’s activities and needs. She participated in Hadassah and Sisterhood at Temple Israel and was the temple Bulletin typist (before word processing capabilities) for some 10 years. After her children were fledged, Barbara ran Pocono Realty Company’s property management business from the mid-1980s until recently.

An unfillable void remains for Barbara’s daughter Minda and son Steven who were with her, as well as granddaughter Mollie, cousin Eugene “Artie” Glantz, dear relatives, loved ones and friends. We will remember her modest, sacrificing and unfailingly selfless love and devotion.

Funeral services will be promptly held as tradition requires at Temple Israel of the Poconos, 711 Wallace Street, Stroudsburg, PA on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Laurelwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by your donation in remembrance to the charity of your choice.
