Catharine A. Stickell

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Catharine A. "Cass" Stickell, 87, of Menno-Haven, and formerly of 5152 Buchanan Trail East, Greencastle, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 19, 1911, in Upton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry V. and Estella Boyd Angle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred R. Stickell, in 1971.

She was a 1931 graduate of Lemasters High School, and attended nurses training in Philadelphia.

She and her husband operated Stickell's General Store in Upton for 25 years, retiring in 1978.

She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Upton.

She was a charter member of Greencastle-Antrim Lioness Club and Greencastle AARP Chapter 3025; a member of Upton Homemakers Club; Greencastle-Antrim Women's Fellowship; and Greencastle-Antrim Loyal Daughters; and a member and Historian of Conococheague Institute of Welsh Run, Pa. She volunteered with American Red Cross; Daffodil Days of American Cancer Society; and Greencastle Lioness volunteers at Piney Mountain Home.

She is survived by a sister, Susan A. Shook of Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown; a brother, Robert H. Angle of Laurel, Miss.; two nieces and two nephews.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ in Upton, Pa. The Rev. Douglas Hodges will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle; and Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.

She requested the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, 5441 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle PA 17225.

Harold L. Hess

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Harold L. Hess, 77, a resident of Menno-Haven, and formerly of 4375 Mercersburg Road, Mercersburg, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born Sept. 21, 1921, in Guilford Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Laban S. and Mary E. Zook Hess.

He was a dairy farmer, retiring in 1970. He worked as a custodian in the Tuscarora School District, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church near Mercersburg.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna E. Wenger Hess; a daughter, Fern E. Hess Miller of Mercersburg; two sons, Dean L. Hess and Alan C. Hess, both of Greencastle, Pa.; two sisters, Leoda Blackketter of Shamrock, Texas, and Lois Little of Pinetop, Ariz.; a brother, Merle Hess of New Oxford, Pa.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Lane E. Hess; and a brother, Glenn Hess.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church, 6727 Montgomery Church Road, Mercersburg, Pa. The Rev. Dennis Ritchey and the Rev. Curtis Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle; and Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Benevolent Fund of Menno-Haven, 2075 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg PA 17201; or Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church, 6727 Montgomery Church Road, Mercersburg PA 17236.

Frederick W. Kuhne

WILLOW HILL, Pa. - Frederick Wallace Kuhne, 74, of Willow Hill, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at his home.

Born Sept. 27, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Frederick V. and Ellen V. Mazzei Kuhne.

He was a veteran of World War II.

He worked for Grumman Aircraft Corporation in Bethpage, N.Y., and was one of the key builders of the prototype for the Lunar Module.

He subsequently worked in research and development at JLG Industries in McConnellsburg, Pa., retiring in 1988.

He was a founding board member of Metal Township Fire and Ambulance Company in Fannettsburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pauline Sandrus Kuhne; three daughters, Betty Ann "B.A." Keener of Chambersburg, Pa., Marjorie Lauver of Maryland and Jayne Alison at home; a brother, Eugene V. Kuhne of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; two granddaughters who lived with him, Erica Catherine and Laura Dayle, and four additional grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Louise Kuhne.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church, Spring Run, Pa.

Friends may call Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Lutheran Home Care, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201; or Metal Township Fire and Ambulance Company, P.O. Box 185, Fannettsburg, PA 17221.

Robert K. Shatzer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert Kendele Shatzer, 83, of 1400 Scotland Ave., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born July 15, 1915, in St. Thomas, Pa., he was the son of the late Paul and Beulah Shatzer.

In 1974, he retired as a truck driver from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. He also worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s and Cumberland Valley Railroad as a young man.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a member of St. Thomas American legion VFW, Mercersburg, Pa.; National Association of Retired Employees; and played semi-pro baseball.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Shatzer, whom he married Oct. 10, 1936; a daughter, Audrey A. Laack of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Thomas Shatzer of Chambersburg; a stepson, George Eugene Bowers of Reisertown, Md.; five sisters, Janet McFadden of St. Thomas, Helen Miller of Edenville, Pa., Rosaline Byers of Clarksville, Del., Mary Grace Picking of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Eva Fox of Fort Myers, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dan Shatzer; and an infant sister.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas. The Rev. John Rauhut will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Sunday from 2 until 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Fort Loudon United Methodist Church, 12781 Main St., Fort Loudon, PA 17224.

Harvey E. Rice

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Harvey E. Rice, 89, of 1284 Leitersburg Road, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 27, 1909, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Peter and Elizabeth Shank Rice.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Jane Bingaman Rice, in 1994. They were married March 17, 1928.

He worked at Frick Co. of Waynesboro from 1937 to 1944, then again from 1948 until 1971 when he retired. He also was a farmer from 1945 until recent years.

In his earlier life, he was a member of Calvary Tabernacle Church in Waynesboro and was one of the founders of Faith Temple Church of Cearfoss.

He enjoyed camping and being with his family.

He is survived by five daughters, Berneita Moore of Clear Spring, Betty Heacox of Marion, Pa., Mary Mayhugh of Shady Grove, Pa., Naomi Mowen of Greencastle, Pa., and Jean Owens of Jacksboro, Tenn.; five sons, Harvey Rice Jr. of Ellicott City, Md., Robert Rice, James Rice and Donald Rice, all of Waynesboro and Paul Rice of Greencastle; three sisters, Goldie Elliott, Mildred Johnson and Naomi Rice, all of Chambersburg; three brothers, Otha Rice and Melvin Rice, both of Chambersburg and Preston Rice of Staunton, Va.; 33 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Iva "Dolly" Fritz on July 30, 1998; two great-grandchildren, Tommie Heacox and Nicholas Rice; five sisters, Mary Burkholder, Ana Bowers, Pearl Hoffman, Edith Duffey, Mini Pittman; and three brothers, Clifford Rice, Irvin Rice and Walter Rice.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Antrim Assembly of God Church, 11192 Bemisderfer Road, Greencastle. The Rev. Raymond Jones, the Rev. Oscar Molatlau and the Rev. Rodger Berkey will officiate. Burial will be in Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line, Md.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle; and at the church one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
