Born Nov. 17, 1916, in Spangler, the son of Slovakian immigrants, Mary (Kuzmission) Sovik-Voytko and Peter Voytko, who Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died in the Riley Shaft explosion in 1922. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances (Dunn) Voytko, who passed away on Sept. 18, 1975; siblings, Stephen Sovik, Joseph Sovik, Mary (Sovik) Papotto, Nicholas Voytko, Ann (Voytko) Winsko, John Voytko and Helen Voytko. Survived by children, James M. Voytko, Portland, Ore.; Jane A. Holtry, Beaverton, Ore.; Patricia F. Voytko Zito, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Judith I. Voytko, Kenneth J. Voytko and Michael M. Voytko, all of Northern Cambria; Mary M. Flynn, Rose Valley, Pa.; and Richard A. Voytko, New Castle; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and devoted friend, Mark Stoltz. Graduate of Spangler High School. Michael’s years of working began at the Spangler A&P;, where he worked from age 18 to 24 with a wage of $19 per week. On April 8, 1941, at age 24, he was inducted into the Army and became a sergeant with Battery C of the 754th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion. He was a veteran of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He received a Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star and an Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with one Bronze Star. He later served as a drill instructor, training young soldiers for duty in the jungle. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 7, 1945. One of his fondest memories returing home was enjoying his mother’s homemade vegetable soup. He returned to work at the A&P; and later took a job with American Bakeries, Johnstown District, working as a salesman for more than 20 years. On May 29, 1948, he married Frances Regina Dunn from Pittsburgh. She was a nursing instructor and later director of nurses at Miners Hospital, Spangler. Together they established their homestead on June 20, 1950, when they purchased their land in Spangler from Mary Falger with a $6,500 Veteran’s Administration loan. There they built their home and raised eight children. After Fran’s passing in 1975, Mike continued raising the family on his own. He worked for a short time at the County Home and later, for the PA Mines Corp. as a night watchman/custodian. He retired in 1989 at the age of 72. Mike was a founding member of VFW Post 7503, Spangler, and member of Barnesboro Slovak Club, Spangler American Legion and Hastings Moose. Member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Mike enjoyed spending time berry pickin’ and mushroom pickin’ in the woods with his kids, working in his vegetable garden and hunting. He was a lifelong Pirates and Steelers fan. He will be remembered as a man who took life in stride, with unfailing strength and humor. His boundless love for his family made him rich beyond any material measure. Friends will be received from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Moriconi Funeral Home Inc., Northern Cambria, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Chapel. Committal, Holy Cross Cemetery. Military honors by local veterans organizations.

WASHKO – Mrs. Phyllis L. (Berkebile)
WASHKO – Mrs. Phyllis L. (Berkebile), 86, Windber, passed away Sept. 9, 2007, at Meadow View Nursing Care Center, Berlin. Born June 26, 1921, in New Florence, daughter of John and Elizabeth Decker. Preceded in death by parents; sons, Telford and George; daughter, Mary Noon; brothers, James, Thomas and Barney; sister, Veda Cummings; a grandson; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson. Survived by husband, John Jr.; daughters, Darlene Coutts, Johnstown, and Betty, wife of Joseph Oraweic, Mineral Point; brothers, Pete and Frank Decker; and sister, Evelyn Mort; also 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Employed by Bestform and Windber Area School District. John 10:10: Mom, love and peace go with you until we see you again to say goodbye three say hello. Funeral service will be private at the deceased’s request. Arrangements by Meek & Dalla Valle Funeral Home Inc., Windber.

KRENTZ – Catherine Jean
KRENTZ – Catherine Jean, 87, went to meet the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007. Catherine was a resident of the Donahoe Manor Nursing Home in Bedford, Pa. She was a former resident of Richland Towers and a longtime resident of the Hornerstown section of Johnstown. Catherine was Born May 20, 1920, in Johnstown, the daughter of William Henry Slick and Helen Jean (Stearn) Slick. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis William Krentz; daughter-in-law, Noreen (Skasko) Krentz; and sister, Margaret Gray. Catherine is survived by sons, Frank W. Krentz, and wife, Myra Whysong-Krentz, of Pavia, Bedford County; and Martin J. Krentz, and wife, Judith (Leimbacher) Krentz, of Fishertown, Bedford County. Also surviving are grandchildren, John P. Krentz, and wife, Nancy (Dobson) Krentz, of York, Pa.; Kimberly (Krentz) Broberg, and husband, Christopher Broberg, of Stafford, Va.; and Kerri Krentz of Elizabethtown, Pa. Catherine had three great-grandchildren, Justin, Johnathon and Jillian Krentz, of York, Pa. Step-granddaughter, Katie M. Whysong also survives. Catherine is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Catherine was a former beautician in Johnstown and a longtime cherished homemaker. She was a graduate of Johnstown High School and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Johnstown. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. There will be a private funeral service at the Henderson Funeral Home, East Hills, with the Rev. Douglas Friant, of the Bedford Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown.

MUSSER – Doris E. “Dorie”
MUSSER – Doris E. “Dorie” Musser, age 66, passed away at home on Sept. 7, 2007, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will deeply be missed by her family and friends. Dorie was Born March 27, 1941, in Hollsopple, to Clarence, who preceded her in death, and Ruth Brown of Hollsopple. Dorie is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Donald; children, Denise Musser, Debra (Scott) DeMarco and Darren (Laurie) Musser; four grandchildren, Renee and Trevor DeMarco, Tyler and Troy Musser; her mother, Ruth; and a brother, Tom (Louise) Brown of Hollsopple. She was a member of Eastside Grace Brethren Church, a homemaker for many years and then for the last 10 years, was employed by National Middle School Association as an administrative assistant. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Pfeifer Funeral Home. Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Church at 7510 E. Broad St, Blacklick, with Pastor Chip Heim officiating. Burial will be in Glen Rest Memorial Estate. The family suggests contributions to Home Reach Hospice or to Eastside Grace Brethren Church. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Gladys (Miller) Spangler; children, Cheryl Spangler of Somerset; Jerry, married to Susan (Mahler) Spangler, of Davidsville; Jon, married to Evelyn (Windsor) Spangler, Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Jessica and Steven Spangler, Richardson, Texas; Jenna and Jonathan Mahler, Philadelphia; brother and sister-in-law, James and Sally Spangler, Somerset; sister, Dorothy Urban, Geiger; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Kenneth W. Saylor, New Lexington; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Nancy Miller, Berlin; Lester and Ruth Miller, Friedens; Dolores and William Eckman, LaPlata, Md.; Neil and Ruby Miller, Somerset; step-brother and wife, Thomas and Betty Anderson, Somerset; step-sister and husband, Barbara and Paul Hackett, Hampton, Va. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A 1943 graduate of Shanksville Stonycreek High School, retired Stonycreek Township dairy farmer and former secretary for Stonycreek Township supervisors. A U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Shanksville. Charter member of Shanksville American Legion Post 911 and Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department He was past American Legion county commander (1970), a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1801, and the Somerset Hospital Parkinson’s Support Group. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. Viewing from noon until service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Shanksville, Rev. Robert Way officiating. Interment, Somerset County Memorial Park. Military rites by Somerset County Honor Guard. WINGARD – David E., 68, Richland Township, passed away Sept. 7, 2007, at home. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at John Henderson Co. Funeral Home, 215 Central Ave., where funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, the Rev. Donald E. Krestar. Entombment, Richland Mausoleum. David was loved by all who knew him.

ZEIGLER – Donald C. “Goose”
ZEIGLER – Donald C., “Goose,” 70, Berlin, beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend to all, went to be with the Lord Sept. 8, 2007, at Somerset Hospital. Born Dec. 15, 1936, in Lambertsville, son of Fred Sr. and Hazel (Beal) Zeigler. Preceded in death by parents; and brother, Fred Jr. Survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Marian Good; son, Donald A., and wife, the former Sally Musser, Berlin; grandson, Donald A. Jr.; and granddaughter, Joanna. Brother of Jean, married to Robert Hockensmith, Hagerstown, Md. Brother-in-law of Dolores Zeigler, Uniontown; William J. Good, and wife, Edna, Berlin; and Barbara, married to Harry Pacifico, Warren, Ohio. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. A 1955 graduate of Shanksville-Stonycreek High School, where he was an outstanding basketball player and held the county scoring record for many years. Retired carpenter for Darr Construction. He was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Macdonaldton; Carpenter’s Union 1419; Berlin Coffee Club; Mountain Field and Stream Club, Roxbury; and the New Baltimore Sportsmen’s Club. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin, where rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Macdonaldton, the Rev. James Dugan officiating. Committal, St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery.
