DANKO - Mrs. Ruth
DANKO - Mrs. Ruth J., lost her fierce battle with renal cell cancer Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Good Samaritan Nursing Care Center. Born in Black Diamond of immigrant parents, she was the quintessential American success story. Before it was fashionable, before it was taken for granted, before the term "career woman" was even part of the lexicon, this divorced mother of two worked her way from high school graduate to college graduate, holding down as many jobs as it took. From piece-worker at Bestform to nursing at Mercy Hospital, Good Samaritan and finally Conemaugh Valley, she accomplished what she set out to do. She loved her family, friends and cats. Most spring and summer Fridays and Saturdays she could be found rummaging about the local garage sales. She loved a good bargain and Scrabble, cards, crossword puzzles, books, picnics and fresh green fried tomatoes. But most of all she loved life. Ruth endured, overcame and fought to make her life what it was and how it was. Independent and courageous, she was the embodiment of a woman who lived strong. She will be desperately missed. Preceded in death by parents, Andrew and Mary Anderson; sisters, Pauline Hunt, Francine Hodownes and Anna Marie Chizmar. Survived by these children, Marcia, wife of Clarke Hankey, Pittsburgh, and Mark, married to the former Bobbi Kelly, Johnstown; grandchildren, Jody, Adam, Lynnie and Nate Danko; and brother, Mike Anderson, married to the former Matilda Sally, Windber. Also numerous nieces and nephews. Member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Windber, where funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m., the Very Rev. Leonard E. Voytek, VF, pastor. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Hugh W. Marron Funeral Home, Windber, where vigil for the deceased will be held. Entombment, Richland Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be directed toward the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, Va. 22038-1131 or the American Cancer Society, 168 W. Union St., Somerset, Pa. 15501-1454, in memory of Ruth.
