John "Michael" Geary
Officer of aiport authority
Retired Erie banker Michael Geary, an officer of the Erie International Airport Authority and key figure in Erie hockey, died of an apparent heart attack early Thursday.
Geary, 61, 417 Montpelier Ave., Millcreek Township, suffered the apparent attack about 12:23 a.m. while driving at West 8th and Cherry streets, Erie County Coroner Merle Wood said.
Erie police said Geary's car struck a utility pole. An ambulance crew resuscitated him and took him to Hamot Medical Center, where he was resuscitated again, but died, police said.
The coroner said the accident did not cause Geary's death.
Geary, who was a highly regarded junior hockey player as a child in Buffalo, N.Y., helped form the Erie Lions hockey team in the early 1960s. The team, which played at the Glenwood Ice Rink (now the John M. Cochran Ice Arena), introduced hockey to Erie and was wildly popular. Sell-out crowds jammed the rink for Friday and Saturday games and Geary became one of the most popular stars.
Later, Geary became an influential coach and official in the Erie Youth Hockey program.
Rick Chartraw, who later played on Stanley Cup championship teams in the National Hockey League, used to credit Geary for helping him hone his hockey skills.
When the Erie Blades professional team played in Erie in the late 1970s and 1980s, Geary served as director of officials for the Northeastern Hockey League.
At the time of his retirement Geary was a vice president of PNC Bank in charge of small business lending. Over the years he managed several Marine Bank and PNC Bank branches, including the Erie Central Mall, airport and Summit Township offices.
He was a former president and treasurer of the Erie International Airport Authority.
He was born May 14, 1937, in Buffalo, son of the late John P. "Jack" Geary and Mary Frances Viera Geary.
He was a graduate of Bishop Timon High School in Buffalo, attended Niagara University and the Pennsylvania Bankers Association School of Banking at Bucknell University.
He worked for Marine Bank, later PNC, from 1966 until his retirement this year in March.
He was a life member of the Sacred Heart Ushers Society and a member of the Times Old Newsies, Siebenbuerger Club, Erie Maennerchor Club and Sportsman's Athletic Club. He was a former member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Schmitt Geary; a son, Timothy Michael Geary of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, and his wife, Judie; four daughters, Elizabeth Anne Clauss of Clarks Summit and her husband, Chris, Kathleen Shade of Pittsburgh and her husband, Dan, Maureen Ellison Geary and Laura Frances Geary, both of Erie; two stepsons, Jon and James Tushak, both of Erie; three brothers, Patrick Geary and his wife, Gloria, Charles Geary and his wife, Carol, and William Geary and his wife, Mary Ann, all of Buffalo; seven grandchildren, T.J. and Kevin Geary, Isabelle Clauss, Jack, Zachary, Madeline and Sophia Shade; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Burton West Lake Funeral Home, 3816 West Lake Road, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated at St. Julia Roman Catholic Church, 638 Roslyn Ave., Monday at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 823 Filmore Ave., Erie, PA 16505; or the Times Old Newsies, in care of The Times Publishing Company, 205 W. 12th St., Erie, PA 16534.
