Pleasant, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 20, 1999, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born June 30, 1927, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Alvin and Lillian Burger Harshman. Phyllis was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. Phyllis leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted children, Catherine Guptill and her husband, Charles, of Texas, John Chain Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, and Pamela Whitt of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Anthony, Michael, and Charles Guptill Jr., and Amber Chain; and the following brothers and sisters, Earl Harshman of Greensburg, Doreen Toth of Jeannette, Wanneda Gray of Reno, Nev., Vernelle Sullenberger of Greensburg, Donald Harshman and his wife, Margaret, of Florida, Penny Vineyard of North Carolina, and Cindy Harshman of Scottdale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John William Chain; and a sister, Agnes Allshouse, who died in 1984. Phyllis' family will receive friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Michael W. Matusak, pastor of St. Pius X R.C. Church, Mt. Pleasant, officiating. Interment will follow in the Scottdale Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to one's favorite charity in memory of Phyllis J. Chain. MARY GOLEK Mary Golek, 85, of South Greensburg, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Feb. 24, 1914, in Youngwood, a daughter of the late John and Katherine Hutec Smolka. She was a member of St. Bruno Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Golek; a daughter, Mary Kay Golek; two sisters, Erma Smolka and Catherine Johnson; and five brothers, Stephen, Michael, George, Albert and John Smolka. She is survived by two brothers, Joseph Smolka and Thomas Smolka and wife, Martha, all of Youngwood; two sisters, Ann White of Greensburg and Josephine Perintozzi of Monongahela; and several nieces and nephews. Viewing will be private. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Bruno Church, South Greensburg, with Father Blane Resko, O.S.B., as celebrant. Natale N. Pantalone, funeral director. ROSE E. HAWANCHAK Rose E. Hawanchak, 80, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born May 19, 1919, in Derry, a daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy Oliver DelleDonne. She was a member of St. Vincent Basilica, Latrobe, and retired from Newcomer Products. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Hawanchak; two brothers; and two sisters. Survived by a daughter, Rita Zurick and her husband, Joseph, of Library; two sisters, Vivian Cornelius of Latrobe and Ann Zurick of Latrobe; a grandson, Mark Zurick and his wife, Carla; and two great-grandchildren, Maura Zurick and Mark Andrew Zurick. "Jack" Kenney, Sr., 75, of Crabtree, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Crabtree, a son of the late George Sr. and Catherine McClain Kenney. After attending public school in the Greensburg Salem School District, he attended St. Vincent College. During World War II, he served in the European Theater as a platoon sergeant and saw action in the Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge. In addition to being a lifelong Democrat and active in Democratic party circles, he was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, the Crabtree Volunteer Fire Department, the Jeannette American Legion, and served on the Salem Township and Greensburg Salem Recreation Boards. He gave much of his time to guide and direct young people by coaching little league, pony league, prep league and American Legion baseball. He served on the Greensburg Salem School Board for 19 years and represented the school district on the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit Board for 15 years. As a member of the Greensburg Salem and WIU boards, he negotiated numerous collective bargaining agreements with both professional and classified employees. He was employed by Kennametal Inc. for 20 years, was a District Justice for two years and served as a Workers Compensation Judge in the PA Department of Labor and Industry for 27 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Paul; two brothers, George Jr. and William; a sister, Ann Januck; and two infant sisters. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Marguerite Ferlin Kenney; his son, Dr. Jack Kenney Jr. of Greensburg and his wife, Peggy, and their two children, Justin and Jessica; his daughter, Maureen Fleck of Greensburg and her husband, Jim, and their daughter, Danielle; his son, Patrick Kenney of Winter Springs, Fla., and his wife, Posie, and their children, Kellie, Shane, Katie and Megan; his son, Dr. Donald Kenney of Columbia, S.C., and his wife, Lael, and their children, Manya, Emma and Madison; his son, Kevin Kenney of Columbus, Ohio, and his son, Ryan; and his granddaughter and the daughter of his deceased son, Ronald, Deanna Lynn Hrosik of Hudson, Ohio, and her husband, Mike, and their children, Haley and Ryan. He is also survived by his sister, Rita McFeeley of Greensburg and her husband, John; his sisters-in-law, Eleanor Kenney of Crabtree and Peggy Kenney of Latrobe; his brother-in-law, Joe Januck of Natrona Heights; and numerous nieces and nephews. WINIFRED PALMER Winifred Palmer, wife of professional golfer Arnold Palmer, and a community leader in Latrobe in the fields of literacy and health care, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at her Latrobe home, after a 13-month illness with peritoneal carcinoma. A private memorial service will be held Monday at Unity Chapel, Unity Township, with a private reception to follow. A memorial service is also being planned for the immediate future in Orlando, Fla., where the Palmers have made their winter home since the late 1960s. There will be no funeral home visitation. Persons wishing to pay tribute to Mrs. Palmer may make contributions to the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation, West Second Avenue, Latrobe, PA 15650, or to the Adams Memorial Library, 1112 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. Winifred Palmer was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Williamsport, one of three children of Martin S. and Mary Walzer. She grew up in the Allentown/Bethlehem area of eastern Pennsylvania, graduated from the Moravian Seminary for Girls and enrolled at Brown University's Pembroke College, intending to pursue a career as an interior designer. However, she soon switched to a business/economics major. This was more to her liking, but she put it all behind her when she met Arnold Palmer at a golf tournament at Shawnee-on-the-Delaware in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains just days after he had won the U.S. Amateur Championship in Detroit in August of 1954. Mrs. Palmer was at Arnold's side as he achieved fame and fortune in the world of professional golf and business, and became one of the most popular and successful players of the game. She served as a board member of the LAH Charitable Foundation, the Orlando Regional Healthcare System (which operates the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women), the Adams Memorial Library and St. Vincent College, Latrobe. She was active in advisory capacities in the operations of the Latrobe Country Club and the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, serving as vice-president and director of both family-owned operations, and was a consultant to Lexington Furniture in the creation of its Palmer Collection. Mrs. Palmer, who pointedly remained in the background of the busy public life of her husband, described herself in a newspaper interview as a "person person" rather than the "people person" that he has always been during his career. "We met on Labor Day, were engaged on Columbus Day, and married Dec. 20, five days before Christmas, " she said in the interview. "I've never caught up with Christmas since then." She came to love the Latrobe community after her marriage. "The people are so nice. No class distinctions. They're just wonderful." She was an avid reader and long-time booster of the Adams Memorial Library. The Palmers supported the library's summer reading program for children. Mrs. Palmer also was interested in gardening, classical music, and hummingbirds, which were attracted to feeders at her home. Both early risers, she usually joined her husband on morning walks or bicycling before getting into the day's activities. Mrs. Palmer is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Mrs. Peter Wears) of Durham, N.C., and Amy (Mrs. Roy Saunders) of Windermere, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. Her father resides in Melbourne, Fla., and her brother, Marty, in Danville, Pa., Her mother and another brother, John, are deceased. Patrizio, 92, of Murrysville, formerly of Oakmont, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999. She was born Oct. 5, 1907, in Friuli, Italy, a daughter of the late Guido and Teresa Martina Fussaro. She lived in Oakmont from 1927 to 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Patrizio, in 1969; a grandson, Ronald Stoll, in 1982; and a sister, Josephine Edmunds. She is survived by a son, William Patrizio and his wife, Sally, of McMurray; two daughters, Dolores Patrizio of Rockville, Md., and Geraldine Stoll of Murrysville; a brother, Rudolph Fussaro of Oakmont; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Sister Jean Frances Peters, S.C., 87, a former teacher and volunteer in services to the elderly, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Caritas Christi, the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity, Greensburg. Born July 7, 1912, in Yukon, the daughter of the late Otto and Margaret (Gillespie) Peters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Regis. An alumna of St. Joseph Academy, she gained her Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education from Duquesne University in 1949. She entered the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill from St. Lawrence O'Toole Parish, Pittsburgh, on Dec. 8, 1931. Sister taught middle and upper elementary students in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg and Tucson, Ariz., and in Bethesda, Md. Later, she served as a volunteer at Kane Hospital and participated in the Senior Companion Program sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging. Sister Jean Frances retired in 1995 and returned to Greensburg in 1997. Friends will be received Monday from 1:30 to 6:45 p.m. at Caritas Christi, Mt. Thor Road, Greensburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of the Assumption, Caritas Christi. Interment in Sisters' Cemetery, Seton Hill, Greensburg. Ward Ralph, 87, of Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999. She was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Shafton, a daughter of the late Thomas Edison and Anna Marie (Clark) Ward. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Irwin, and the Ladies Auxiliary F.O.E. #1671, Irwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Ralph; a brother, William Ward; and a sister, Margaret Hawk. Survived by a son, Ronald G. Ralph and wife, Phyllis, of Greencastle; a grandson, Ronald L. Ralph of Greensburg; and a great-granddaughter, Brook Painter. Friends will be received at the VINCENT V. "Maggie" Burchell, 16, of Benbrook, Texas, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at her home. She was born Sept. 22, 1983, in Mt. Pleasant. She is the daughter of Romona A. Burton Burchell, of Benbrook, Texas, and the late William A. Burchell, who passed away in 1990. She was a student at the Western Hills High School in Benbrook; was a former student at Mt. Pleasant High School and Ramsay Elementary School. She was a member and former C.C.D. student, and altar server with the St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. She had attended St. Felix R.C. Church in Freedom, prior to moving to Texas, and St. Bartholomew R.C. Church in Benbrook. She was a former volunteer worker with the Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. In addition to her mother, she is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Timothy and Julie Burton of Ambridge, William A. and Ruth Burchell of Monongahela, and Gregory and Cynthia Burchell of Turtle Creek; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Romona A. Burchell of Benbrook and Mary Ellen and Joseph Holiquin of Turtle Creek; also her maternal grandmother, Kathleen B. Donohoe Burton of Freedom; four aunts and two uncles, Arabelle Bowman of Hopwood, Agnes Steshoski of Baggs, Okla., Kathleen R. and Keith Curry of Freedom, and Gerard R. and Linda Burton of Beaver Falls; numerous cousins; and a niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, George W. Burton in 1997, and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Burchell.
