ROBERT DIXON
Services for Robert Lee Dixon, 77, were held at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at Wilkes Chapel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ed Griggs and Ronnie Caulder officiated with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Dixon died on Friday, Aug. 18, 2000. Born in McColl, he was a son of the late William H. and Ellen Britt Dixon. Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Linton Dixon of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Lett of Wheaton, Md., Joe and Deloris Lett of Patrick, Bruce and Susan Lett of Archdale, N.C., Ken and Phyllis Dixon of Hartsville, Donnie and Vickie Dixon of Patrick, Charlie Dixon of Hartsville, Terry and Deborah Dixon of Concord, N.C.; daughters and son-in-law, Betty Sue Freeman of Hartsville, Penny D. and Donnie Mangum of McBee; sister, Rosie Lee Outlaw of Florence; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

LUKE DOUGLAS
Services for Luke Douglas, of Chesterfield County, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at The Clyde Church of God in Hartsville with Rev. John W. (Wallace) Strickland, officiating with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Bullock Funeral Home, Inc. of Sumter. Mr. Douglas died Aug. 19, at Tuomey Healthcare Systems in Sumter. He was born on Oct. 29, 1920 and was the son of Doc Glenn and Mable Warren Douglas. He was a loving father. He was preceded in death by a son, Cornelius Hayward Douglas. Survivors include four sons, William Albert Hayden and Glenn L. Douglas of Sumter, Billy C. Douglas of Camden and Danny R. Douglas of Alabama; four daughters, Mary E. Smith and Cynthia L. Bartholomew of Sumter, Nina Ruth Jerome of Oklahoma and Linda Groth of Raleigh, N.C.; and one sister, Mildred Shelley of Sumter.

VIOLA SALEEBY
Graveside services for Viola Horton Saleeby, 74, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Magnolia Cemetery with The Rev. Richard W. Turnage officiating, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross Blood Services S.C. Region, Box 3217, Columbia, S.C. 29230-3217 or the American Heart Association, 181 E. Evans St., Suite 206, Florence, S.C. 29506-5502. Mrs. Saleeby, widow of Caleb Saleeby, died Thursday, Aug. 17. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Clennie and Nettie Kirkley Horton. She was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She, along with her husband, owned and operated Southern Candy Kitchen, the oldest family owned business in Hartsville. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in law, Nadya Saleeby and Kris Collins of Columbia, Andrea Saleeby and Warren Owens of Lexington, and Annette Saleeby of Hartsville; and brother and sister-in-law, James C. and Carrie Horton of Cassett. He was predeceased by a brother, Everett Horton.

ALBERT ATKINSON
Services for William Albert Atkinson, 93, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at New Market United Methodist Church. The Revs. Tommy Browne and Larry Brown officiated, with burial in Magnolia Cememtery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mr. Atkinson, widower of Blanche McCoy Atkinson, died Friday, Aug. 18. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late William Arthur and Mary Jane Sexton Atkinson. He was a member of New Market United Methodist Church and was a past Sunday School teacher in the Men’s Bible class. He served in the U.S. during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and DAV. Surviving are his son and daughters-in-law, Curtis T. "Buddy" (Cheryl) Atkinson of Hartsville; sister, Louise Brown of Hartsville; grandchildren, Kathi G. Johnson, Michael C. Atkinson, Mack Atkinson; great-grandchildren, Tee Johnson, Kaley Johnson, Michelle Moore; step-grandchildren, Tracy Bullard, Deborah Holland and Eric Key.

MARY M. DAVIS
Services for Mary Melton Davis, 50, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in the chapel of Norton Funeral Home with Rev. Homer Hinson, officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mrs. Davis died Aug. 21 and was born in Dillon County. She was the daughter of Jessie W. Melton and the late Lillie Williams Melton. She was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Leon Davis Sr. of Hartsville; three sons, Leon Davis Jr., Eric Shawn Davis and Christopher Davis, all of Hartsville and one brother, Jackie Melton of Cheraw.

MAJOR BRYANT
Services for Major "Bill" Bryant, 63, of Worcester, were 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in Graham, Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors. Mr. Bryant died Wed., Aug. 16, at his home. He was born in Hartsville and was the son of the late Major Bryant Sr. and Mary Lee Bryant. He lived 40 years in Worcester. Mr. Bryant worked many years for the former Standard Foundry Company and later worked at Madison Place. Survivors are four sisters, Tera L. Bryant of Charlotte, Magalene Blakney, Coralee and Theresa Bryant, all of Hartsville; five brothers, Lonnie Lee Bryant of Charlotte, N.C., Buster and Boisy Bryant, both of Hartsville; Gene Bryant of Lynchburg, Va., and Henry Bryant of Columbus, Ga.; seven aunts, two uncles of Ashland community of Darlington County; nephews and nieces; and a close friend, Anne Bedard.

ANGEL PURVIS
Graveside services for Angel Elizabeth Purvis, infant daughter of Larry Purvis and Michelle Player Dixon, will be held 10 a.m. today, Aug. 25, 2000, in Bethesda Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Surviving are her parents; her sister, Tiffany Dixon; paternal grandparents, Ada and Jimmy Davis; maternal grandmother, Mary Player; paternal great-grandparents, Brooks and Helen Gardner; paternal great-great-grandmothers, Ada M. Steen and Jenny Anderson. She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Nolan Purvis, and maternal grandfather, Franklin Player.

THOMAS E. VANN
Services for Thomas Edison Van, 68, of Patrick, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in United Missionary House of Praise in Chesterfield with interment in Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville, directed by Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home of Chesterfield. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, Aug. 25, from 7-9 p.m. Mr. Vann was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Ed and Dora McDonald Vann. He was a retired security guard and farmer. Mr. Vann attended United Missionary House of Praise and was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Vann, and a sister, Maybell Hill. Survivors are his wife, Margaret Quick Vann of the home; four sons, Howard Vann of Grovetown, Ga., Marion Vann of Atlanta, Ga., Gary Vann of Hartsville, and Shawn Vann of Pageland; three daughters, Teresa Vann and Gail Usher of Hartsville and Linda Vann of Timmonsville; one brother, Bill Vann of Jefferson; one sister, Mary Eason of Jefferson; one step-daughter, Vickie Childers of Patrick; one step-son, John Paul Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.; 16 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P. O. Box 293, Chesterfield, S. C. 29709.

LEON L. DYSON SR.
Services for Leon Lynwood Dyson Sr., 71, of Rockingham will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church of Rockingham with the Rev. Dwight Williams, officiating. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery in Rockingham with Masonic Rites, directed by Watson-King Funeral Home of Rockingham. Mr. Dyson died Wed., Aug. 23 at Sandhills Regional Hospital. He was born April 10, 1929, in Lancaster, a son of the late Jacob Dyson and Esther Derrick Dyson. He was retired from Western and Southern Life Insurance Co., where he was in sales for 27 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rockingham and was a member of Rockingham Masonic Lodge #495. Surviving are a son, Lynn Dyson Jr. and wife Marsha, of Rockingham; three daughters, Sylvia D. Walters and husband, John of Hartsville; Cindy D. Floyd and husband, Wendell of Rockingham; and Lisa Dyson and Henry Pinto of Rockingham; two brothers, Charles Dyson of Hoffman Estates, Ill. and Danny Dyson of Clinton; two sisters, Doris Jordan and Clelia Ramey, both of Rockingham; six grandchildren, Art Boyer III, Christopher Boyer, Lauren Floyd and Morgan Pinto, all of Rockingham, Caroline Walters of Hartsville and Jennifer Hughes of Southern Pines; and one great-grandchild, Christopher Boyer of Rockingham.

CLIFTON BROWN
Services for Clifton Brown will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Church of God Beyond Man’s Knowledge House of Prayer, Inc.With All Peoples. Burial will be in Wesley Temple Holiness Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mr. Brown, 90, died Friday in McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born in Lee County, a son of the late John and Sudie Brown. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Mathis of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Bobby Brown of Charlotte, N.C., and James Cabbagestalk of Marion; two brothers, Ray Brown of Greensboro, N.C., and James Brown of Newark, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
