ELMER [ELMA] R. GILLILAND
Elmer Ruth Gillialand, 85, of Asheville, N. C., formerly of Hartsville, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in an Asheville North Carolina hospital after an illness. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

ELMA R. GILLILAND
Services for Elma Ruth Gilliland were Tuesday, May 30, 2000 in Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home. Mrs. Gilliland, 85, died Wednesday, May 24, in Fletcher, N.C. after an illness. She was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Ben Johnson and Jessie Hendrix. She received her education in Chesterfield County public schools and was a member of Fair Mount Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C. Surviving are a son, Charles Johnson of Fletcher, N.C.; a daughter, Betty Mucklesene of Tacoma, Washington; a sister, Lulvevert Chambers of Hartsville; three grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

PEGGY BEASLEY
Private services for Peggy Beasley, formerly of Hartsville, were held in Missouri. Mrs. Beasley, wife of Harold Beasley, died May 29, 2000, in Bonne Terre, Mo. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., in 1931. The Beasley’s moved to Hartsville in 1983 where her husband was employed with Sonoco. Upon his retirement from Sonoco, they returned to Terre Du Lac, a resort community in Missouri. Peggy was an avid tennis and bridge player, taught business at Hartsville High as a substitute teacher, was active at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and served in the Guardian ad Litum program. Mrs. Beasley’s spirit and determination to survive Lou Gherig’s disease as long as possible was an inspiration to many of her friends. Survivors are her husband, Harold, four children, Kathy Beasley, Mrs. Karl Lutkewitte, Ann Bacon and John Beasley; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the ALS Society.

IRA J. DOTTS
Services for Ira Jim Dotts, 55, of Lamar, will be 4 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, in Lamar Chapel of Belk Funeral Home. Interment will following in Mt. Elon Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7-9 p.m. Mr. Dotts died Monday, May 30. He was born in Pennsylvania, the son of the late Henry and Katherine Rose Sneal Dotts. He was retired from the logging industry and was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Jimmy Dotts of Sumter; a grandchild, Damien Dotts of Sumter; three brothers, Phillips Dotts of Ohio, Lemoine Dotts of Boston, Mass., and David Dotts of Darlington; and three special nieces, Rosemary Turnage and Jackie Watson, both of Hartsville and Wendy Edwards of Virginia

OLIVIA A. CRANFORD
Services for Olivia Adams Cranford, 72, were held 4 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2000, at Bethune Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Cockrell, Rev. Gary Romines and Rev. Eddie Greene, officiating. Burial was in Patrick Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville chapel. Mrs. Cranford was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Martha Dessie Adams. She was retired from CSX Transportation after 43 years of service, a member of Bethune Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk, member of the Ruth Bible Class, member of the WMU and the Bethune Women’s Club. Surviving are her husband, Blease Cranford of Bethune; son, Jim (Sue) Cranford of Myrtle Beach; daughter, Marian (Jeff) Newman of Fort Mill; three grandchildren, Shaun Cranford of Myrtle Beach and Austin and Wesley Newman of Fort Mill. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Chad Cranford. Memorials may be made to Kershaw County Hospice or the Chad Cranford Memorial Scholarship Fund, 3300 Robert Grissom Parkway, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577.

WILLIE C. HUGHES
Services for Willie Charles "Sonny" Hughes, of Cheraw, were 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Foundry Hill Cemetery, directed by Morris Funeral Home and Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville. Mr. Hughes, 67, died Thursday, May 25. Born in Cheraw, he was a son of the late Thomas Hughes Jr. and Lillie M. Hughes. He was a member of Pee Dee Union Baptist Church, a graduate of Coulter Memorial Academy of Cheraw and Benedict College of Columbia, with a degree in science. He was a former teacher in Lexington and Chesterfield counties. He was employed by the U.S. Government as a Peace Corps volunteer, where he served as a teacher in Uganda, East Africa and the island of St. Lucia’s San Souci Teacher Training Center, Bridgetown Barbados, West Indies. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He is survived by a son, Brian Hughes of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Thomasena H. (Otis) Peterson of Hartsville and Lillian (Waldo) Long of Honolulu, Hawaii; a brother, Benjamin F. Hughes, C.E.M. Retired Navy of Cheraw; sister-in-law, Dorothy L. Hughes of Cheraw; a brother-in-law, Theadore Moses of Charlotte, N.C.; four aunts, several nieces and nephews.

GUS GABEL
Services for Gus Gabel, 82, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Air Force Village in Riverside, with burial in Riverside National Cemetery, directed by Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside, Calif. Mr. Gabel was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, lived in Riverside for 25 years. He previously lived in Hemet 15 years. He served in the U. S. Cavalry National Guard from 1936 until 1938 and in the U.S. Army from 1938 until he retired in 1961, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a member of the Missouri Horse Bread Association. He participated in the annual Death Valley Trail Ride and the Norco Mounted Posse Trail Ride. Mr. Gabel is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three sons, William of Hartsville, Michael of Costa Mesa and Steven of Truckee; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the General Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, 17050 Arnold Driver, Riverside, CA 92518.

SAUNDRA F. HOLDER
Memorial services for Saundra Fern Holder, 59, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 29, 2000, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Worthington officiated. Mrs. Holder died Saturday, May 27, 2000. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Nina Rush Holloman and the late James W. Adams Holloman. Surviving are her mother, Nina Rush Holloman; a brother, Paul Holloman, both of Hartsville; and three sisters, Linda Russell, Judy Quick and Pam Smith, all of Hartsville.

ROBERT M. HORTON
Services for Robert M. Horton, 64, will be held at 4 p.m. today, May 31, 2000, at McBee Baptist Church with Revs. Rick Williams, Larry Pitts, Ralph Terry and Rev. Paul Sowell officiating. Burial will be in McBee Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville chapel. Mr. Horton was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Daniel Gilbert and Flora Johnson Horton. He was a member of McBee Baptist Church and was previous owner of Horton Motors. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gay Nell Norton of McBee; sons and daughters-in-laws, Donald Ray and Jan Horton and Dennis and Gedell Horton, all of McBee and Robert Michael Horton of Hartsville; a step-son, Stacey Benton of Lancaster; a step-daughter, Gail James of Hartsville; two brothers, Gilbert and Charles (Gene) Horton of McBee; a sister, Irene Hargett of Matthews, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to McBee Baptist Church or the McBee Rescue Squad.

LESTER TARLTON JR.
Services for Lester Tarlton Jr., 66, were held Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Buford Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Sowell officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mr. Tarlton was born in Chesterfield County, a son of the late Lester Tarlton Sr. and Flora Poston Tarlton. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas David Tarlton. Surviving are his wife, Margie Dean Tarlton of Bethune; five sons, Hank Hodge, of Bethune, Lester Tarlton III, Freddie Tarlton, Edward Tarlton, all of Jefferson and Tommie Tarlton of Mt. Croghan; four daughters, Judy Small of Bethune, Hope Barrett of Jefferson, Faye Watkins of Mt. Croghan and Dianne Fegan of Pageland; two brothers, Ted Tarlton of Darlington and Grady Tarlton of Saluda; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
