CATHERINE LUNN

Funeral services for Catherine Moody Lunn, 95, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Swift Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Ted Mears and Peter Rivera officiating. Burial followed in Swift Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 413 North Center Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Lunn, widow of Thomas Bonnoitt Lunn, died Thursday, July 3, 2003. Born in Mt. Pleasant, she was a daughter of the late Gen. Eli and Ida Dail Moody. She was the oldest member of Swift Creek Baptist Church, a Sunday school pianist, a teacher and superintendent in the primary department for 40 years, a member of the Sanctuary choir, and a YWA leader. She organized the G.A.'s at Swift Creek and was also a member of a group that organized the first Vacation Bible School for Cherry Grove Baptist Church. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, the Senior Choir, Oasis and Saints Alive, WMU, and the Helen Lee Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her daughters, Carolyn L. Seago and Jean L. Beasley, both of Hartsville; sister–in–law, Elizabeth Moody of Charleston; grandchildren and spouses, Dawn S. Powell of Hartsville, James Darwin and Angie Seago of Hartsville, Thomas Bryan Seago of Florence, Brevard Tyford and Kathy Beasley of Hartsville, Rodney L. Beasley of Myrtle Beach; great–grandchildren, Ashley Seago, Jennifer Seago, Sarah Catherine Katie Powell; great–great–granddaughter, Alexis Grace Seago; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandson Tod Kevin Beasley.

DORIS F. CLARK

Funeral services for Doris Freeman Clark, 67, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Homer Hinson and Buddy Amerson will officiate with burial in Cedar Creek cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Wednesday, July 9, 2003, from 5–7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Patrick Rescue Squad, Box 209, Patrick, SC 29584.

Mrs. Clark died Sunday, July 6, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Corrine Johnson Freeman. She was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and was retired from McBee Elementary School.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, William C. Billy Clark of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Richard D. and Lori Clark, Leon and Teresa Clark, Dale Clark and Teet Horton, all of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Gail C. and Will Edwards of McBee; sister and brother–in–law, Brenda and Dr. Ernest Winburn of Rayville, La.; grandchildren, Alyssa Clark, Dustin Clark, Ashley Edwards, Sharon Edwards, Robbie Clark and Kevin Clark. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Tonya Clark.

ELAINE CHAPMAN

Funeral services for Betty Elaine Chapman, 55, were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at New Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Broadway officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Creek cemetery at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 9, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Ms. Chapman died Sunday, July 6, 2003. Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Taft and Patience Clark Chapman. She was a member of New Providence Baptist Church, was employed at Sara Lee for 17 years and was retired from DSS.

Surviving are her sister and brother–in–law, Jessie and Bob Darrah of Pendleton, Ind.; brothers and sisters–in–law, Buford and Brenda Chapman of Hartsville, George L. and Helen Chapman of Vance; nephews, Larry Darrah, Phillip Darrah, the Rev. Brian Chapman, George L. Chapman Jr., Jerry Chapman; nieces, Cindy Ritter, Linda Denise Gregory, Marla Bunn, Melinda Chapman and Ann Andrews.

HOWARD MARSHALL

BETHUNE — Funeral services for William Howard Marshall, 72, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Bethune Baptist Church. The Rev. Jeff Cockrell will officiate with burial in Bethune Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Marshall died Monday, July 7, 2003. Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late William Howard and Ruth Christmas Marshall. He was a member of Malvern Baptist Church, a U. S. Army veteran, and a member of Bethune Masonic Lodge No. 197. He was retired from Kendall Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Gedelle Stokes Marshall of Bethune; sons, William Howard Marshall III of Charlotte, N.C., Troy Windham of McBee; daughters, Pam Marshall of Charlotte, N.C., Deborah Joyce of Columbia; sister, Jenny Ruth Munn of Camden; brothers, Edward Marshall of Camden and Alvin Marshall of Lake Murray.

WILLIE KELLEY

Funeral services for Willie Ray Kelley, 77, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Chapel of Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home with the Revs. Abraham Silva and Steve Gibson officiating. Burial followed in Rivers of Living Water Church cemetery.

Mr. Kelley died Thursday, July 3, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Hosey Belton and Maybell Shoemake Kelley.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Ray Kelley of Hartsville; sons and daughters–in–law, Levon and Lucy Kelley of Hartsville, Barney and Melinda Kelley of Society Hill; daughter, Judy Gibson of Darlington; sisters and brother–in–law, Patsy Odom of Hartsville, Mary and Abe Silva of China Grove; brothers and sisters–in–law, Junior and Bonnie Kelley of Concord, N.C., Corbit Kelley of Hartsville, Jimmy and Peggy Kelley of Lexington, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, C. W. Kelley.

LEVANDER BRYANT

McBEE — Funeral services for Mr. LeVander Bryant were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church. The Rev. Deberry Cook is the pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. Bryant died on Wednesday, July 2, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Arthur and Tera Muldrow Bryant and was educated in the public schools.

Vander, as he was called by his family and friends, was married to the former Anna Harris, and they were the parents of seven children.

He was employed for more than 30 years as a machine operator with the King Brother Farms.

His Christian life started as a result of the early teachings of his parents, and he continued on this journey as a member of the Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the William Temple Masonic Lodge No. 364 of Ashland.

Surviving to continue his legacy are his wife, Anna of the home; three daughters, Annie (Hazel) Bailey, Cynthia (Leroy) Jackson and Karen (Elve) Williams, all of Hartsville; four sons, Michael (Terry) Bryant of Kingstree, Timothy Bryant and Rufus (Liska) Harris, both of McBee, and Donald (Lil) Blakney of Hartsville; five sisters, Loretta Muldrow, Doll Mack, Irene Reddick, Christine Bryant and Anna (Alvin) Johnson all of Hartsville; one brother W. M. Muldlrow of Hartsville; 10 grandchildren; one great–grandchild; and many other close relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the National Diabetes Association or the Mt. Beulah UMC Building Fund.

FLORENCE S. SORISI

Funeral Mass for Florence Schmidt Sorisi, 86, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Karl Roesch officiating. Burial will be in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight, Wednesday, from 6–8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sorisi died Sunday, July 6.

Surviving are a daughter, Andrea Spafford of Brandenton, Fla.; six grandchildren and 12 great–grandchildren.

NEZZIE HALL

Graveside services for Nezzie Hall, 91, will be held at at 11 a.m. today, July 9, 2003, at New Providence cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hall died Sunday, July 6.

Surviving are a son, Robert Griggs of Hartsville; two daughters, Margie Heeren of Port Byron, Ill., and Dean Freeman of Troy, N.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

CAROL F. SWARTZ

LEXINGTON — Funeral services for Carol F. Swartz, 63, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Foos & Son Funeral Home, Bellvue, Ohio, with pastor Henry Seibert of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in York Chapel cemetery, Bellvue, Ohio.

Mrs. Swartz, widow of the late Phillip Ray Swartz, died Wednesday, July 2, at Richland Memorial Hospital Center for Cancer Treatment. She was born Sept. 29, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio, a daughter of the late William and Vida Wolfe Bratt. She was married to Phillip Ray Swartz on Sept. 29, 1957, who preceded her in death on April 11, 1995. She was formerly of Attica, Bellevue and Bucyrus, Ohio, moving to South Carolina in 1997. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, doing crafts, shopping and watching NASCAR races. She was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Attica, Ohio, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bucyrus, Ohio, and was active in the Golden Agers.

Survivors include four sons, David R. (Linda M.) Swartz of Bucyrus, Ohio, Bryan K. (Rebecca) Swartz of Florida, Tyler E. (Serrena) Swartz of West Columbia and Tobby E. Swartz of Lexington; one daughter, Dawn L. (Ronald R.) Smith Jr. of Lexington; nine grandchildren; a brother, William Brott of Medford, Org.; three sisters, Diana (David) White of Calif., Pamela (Harold) Barnett of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Darlene Holibaugh of Goose Creek, S.C.

She was also preceded in death by three sons and a half–brother, James Ames.

CHERYL LYNN GRIGGS

Memorial services for Cheryl Lynn Griggs, 35, were held at 1 p. m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Griggs died Wednesday, June 25, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Lillian Lloyd Griggs and the late Wiley C. Griggs.

Surviving are her mother of Sumter; sisters and brother–in–law, Janet Cook of Hartsville, Charlene and John Ardis of Harleyville, Barbara Ann Dixon of Centerville, Ala.; brothers and sisters–in–law, Earl and Helen Griggs, Robert Earl Griggs of Centerville, all of Centerville, Ala., James Richard and Jan Griggs of Lake City, Fla., Bryan and Judy Griggs of Jacksonville, Fla., Eugene and Lynn Griggs of Centerville, Ala., Maurice Griggs of Centerville, Ala., Wiley Griggs of Baltimore, Md, Marty Dean Griggs of St. Augustine, Fla.; special brother–in–law, Clyde W. Cook of Darlington; special niece, Rena Britt of Darlington; special sister–in–law, Anne Cook of Darlington; and 20 nieces and nephews.

CORA M. BAXTER

Funeral services for Cora McMillian Baxter, 95, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, 2003, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Karl officiating. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home, Inc., of Hartsville.

Mrs. Baxter died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center after an illness. She was born in Sumter to the late Ed Baker and Lucy Myers. She was educated in the public schools and worked as a teacher's assistant.

Survivors include two children, Orie J. McMillian of Newark, N.J., and James A. Carolina of Capital Heights, Md.

LEVANDER BRYANT

McBEE — Mr. Levander Bryant died Thursday, July 2, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hines Funeral Home, Inc. of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at the residence at 432 Kington Dr., McBee.

TYLER JONES

Funeral services for William Tyler Jones, 11, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Fourth Street Baptist Church. The Revs. Brad Lynch, Ken Hughes and Kevin Massey will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening, Friday, July 4, 2003, from 5–7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones died Wednesday, July 2, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of William Christopher Chris and Trena Gainey Jones. He was a student at North Hartsville Elementary School and was member of the A–B Honor Roll, Beta Club and Eagle Eye Patrol.

Surviving are his mother and father of Hartsville; paternal grandmother, Peggy Poston of Hartsville; maternal grandparents, William Billy and Joyce Gainey of Hartsville; maternal great–grandmother, Hannah Griggs of Hartsville.

J.T. ALFORD

FUQUAY–VARINA, N.C. — Graveside services for James (J.T.) Alford, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Mt. Hope cemetery in Florence.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Sing Alford of Fuquay –Varina, N.C.; sons and daughter–in–law, Michael Boyd and Suzanne Alford of Fuquay–Varina, David Boyd Alford of Greensboro, N.C.; brother and sister–in–law, Jack Rufus and Miriam Alford of Hartsville; and sister, Doris Alford Weaver of Hartsville. He was preceded by a brother and sister–in–law, T.B. and Mary Alford.

KATHLEEN C. BROWN

Funeral services for Kathleen Carroway Brown, 73, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003, in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, June 24, at her residence. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Simon and Sadie Ree Bruce Carroway. She received her education in the public schools of the area. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, president of the Carroway Singers, Choir No. 2, Tears of Joy, Missionary Ministry, Mass Choir, Second Sunday Combined Choir, part of the Sunday School and Bible study ministry.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Brown of the home; three daughters, Elouise Brown Serrette of Brooklyn, N.Y., Helen (Bobby) Bacote and Tanzie Brown Davis, both of Hartsville; one son, James (Shelia) Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Rosa Lee (Ross) Foxe of Hartsville, Annie Lee McPhail of Florence and Carrie McMillan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Abraham Carraway of Darlington, John (Carrie) Carraway and Edward (Beverly) Carraway, both of Hartsville; two grandchildren, Crystal Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jamie Darnell Brown of Hartsville; one uncle, Crosby Bruce of Hartsville; four sisters–in–law, Zeeda Carraway and Rosa Carraway, both of Hartsville, Annie M. Brown of Darlington, and Lucille Benjamin of Bishopville; three brothers–in–law, Joseph Brown, Leroy Green and Ross Foxe, all of Hartsville; four adopted daughters, Geraldine Benjamin, Azalee Mumford, Nicole McClain and Doretha (Lee) Thomas; an adopted son, Billy Wilkins of Hartsville; three devoted friends, Janie Gibson, Sarah McCullough and Jessie Bacote, all of Hartsville; loving nieces, nephews, cousins, in–laws and close friends.
