A.B. FLOYD SR.

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Arnold A.B. Floyd Sr., 84, will be today, July 2, 2003, at 4 p.m. at High Hill Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Bob Thomas and the Rev. John Stephenson. Interment will follow in the church cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Floyd died Monday, June 30, in a local nursing home. He was born in Horry County, son of the late George W. and Curley Alford Floyd. Mr. Floyd was a farmer and also retired from Sonoco Paper Products. He was a member of High Hill Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class, the Men's Brotherhood, and served the church as a deacon.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy C. Floyd of Darlington; one son and daughter–in–law, Arnold B. (Gloria) Floyd Jr. of Hartsville; three daughters and two son–in–laws, Lenora (Irby) Hucks of Conway, Gwen Weatherford of Florence, Patricia Pat (John) Stephenson of Darlington; five grandchildren and five great–grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Dayton H. Floyd of Laurens; and two sisters Eunice F. Singleton of Conway, and Doreatha Rowell of Marion.

Memorials are suggested to High Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 2205 Timmonsville Hwy., Darlington, SC 29532.

CORA McMILLIAN BAXTER

Mrs. Cora McMillian Baxter, 95, died on Monday, June 30, 2003, at the Morrell Memorial Convalescent Center after an illness. All arrangements are entrusted to Hines Funeral Home, Inc.

RANDY GAINEY

MYRTLE BEACH — Graveside services for Randy Earle Gainey, 40, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003, at Society Hill Latter–Day Saints cemetery with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Gainey died Friday, June 27, 2003. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of P.J. Gainey and Brenda Latus Gainey. He graduated from Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, N.C.

Surviving are his daughter, Jessica Gainey of Fort Worth, Texas; father of Myrtle Beach and mother of Mt. Holly, N.C.; brother, Mitch Gainey of Sterling, Va.; sister, Michelle Gainey of Asheboro, N.C.; paternal grandparents, Nat and Sally Jones of High Point, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Kattie Kujan, Tyler Kujan, Joshua Vazquez, Melissa Vazquez, Greyson Gainey, Zander Gainey and Ray Durham.

DAVID E. GRIGGS

Funeral services for David Earl Griggs, 64, will be held at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Swift Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey and the Rev. Peter Rivera will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Rd., Hartsville, SC.

Mr. Griggs died Monday, June 30, 2003. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Elma Gibson Griggs and the late David Cain Griggs. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church, retired as a grain breeder at Coker's Pedigreed Seed, and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Atkinson Griggs of Hartsville; mother of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, David M. and Tanya Griggs of Westminister; daughter and son–in–law, Teressa and Eddie Gardner of Apex, N.C.; sisters, Katherine G. Kirven, Helen G. White and Betty G. Brown, all of Darlington, Sara G. Gibson, Dianne G. O'Neal of Hartsville, Judy G. Mines and Brenda G. Flowers, all of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; and two great–grandchildren.

DONTONIO L. JOSEY

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Dontonio Lavance Don Josey, 24 of Darlington were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, in Round O Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. M. A. McMillian, pastor, Elder Roscoe Black, officiating. Burial followed in the church cometary directed by Mitchell–Josey Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. Josey died June 6. He was born in Darlington County, a son of Dorothy Josey and Sammie Hunter. He received his formal education in the Darlington County public schools. He was a member of Progressive Church of our Lord Jesus Christ in Bishopville.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Josey (Rufus) Benjamin of Darlington; his father, Sammie Hunter of Tacoma, Wash.; a son, Donye Z. Lavance Josey; three sisters, Andrea Josey, Erica Josey and Christina Benjamin; two half–brothers, Sammie L. McCall of Atlanta, Ga., and Steven Hunter of Tacoma, Wash.; his grandmother, Mrs. Sue G. Josey of the home; nine aunts; five uncles; a great–uncle and two great–aunts; a host of cousins.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his grandmother, Sue G. Josey of 1641 Elissa Drive, Darlington.

GENE HOPKINS

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Eugene Gene Hopkins, 67, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, in the Chapel of Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Hopkins died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at a Florence hospital. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Lawrence Hopkins and Martha Gainey Hopkins Tucker.

Surviving are two sons, Eric Hopkins of New Hope and Dwayne Eugene Tucker of Olanta; one daughter Robin Diane T. Alexander of Olanta; three brothers, Lawrence (Sharon) Hopkins Jr. of Hartsville, David (Margaret) Hopkins of Darlington, and Ray (Latrell) Tucker of New Zion; six sisters Ruth Driggers, Nancy (Tommy) Rhodes, Mae (Danny) Horne all of Darlington, Virginia (Louis) Torres of Florence and Glennie (Billy) McKenzie of Olanta, and Nellie (Vernon) Davis of Cheraw. Several nieces and nephews, and a special niece Rhonda Kay Driggers; nine grandchildren and one great–grandchild.

RUTH DICKEY

Ruth Dickey, 75, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, in the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, N.C. Arrangements will be announced by Young &Young; Funeral Home of Hartsville.

JOSEPH TAYLOR JR.

COLUMBIA — Joseph Key Taylor Jr., 62, died Monday, June 23, 2003. He will be buried in Hartsville. No service was held upon his request.

Born in Hartsville, he was the son of the late Joseph Key Taylor Sr. and Lelia Miller Taylor. Educated at Wofford College and the University of South Carolina, he was employed for many years in the insurance business. He was a decent man with an extraordinary wit and rare gift with words. He helped many people throughout his life and will be missed.

Surviving is his sister, Elsie T. Henry of Marietta, Ga.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is serving the family locally, and Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home in charge in Hartsville.

LEWIS L. TIDWELL

BETHUNE — Funeral services for Lewis L. Tidwell, 85, were held Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Holland and Rev. Pat Minihane officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.

Mr. Tidwell died Thursday, June 26. He was born in Kershaw County, a son of the late Rozier Thomas and Eliza Katie Hall Tidwell. He was retired from Kendell Mills, was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, a former deacon and held several positions in the church, and was a Veteran of World War II where he was involved in the D–Day invasion.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years; Mary Johnson Tidwell of Bethune; daughter Ms. Becky Tidwell of Hartsville; and a sister Sadie McCaskill of Camden. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred J. Tidwell.

Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church, 1940 Bethune Road, Bethune, SC 29009

WAYNE E. WEATHERFORD

DARLINGTON — Graveside services for Wayne Edward Weatherford, 52, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Grove Hill cemetery, conducted by pastor Frankie Tanner and directed by Kistler–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Weatherford died Monday, June 30, in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Florence County, a son of Elizabeth Kelly Gregory and the late James Edward Weatherford. He worked for Georgia Pacific for over 30 years and was given a Certificate of Baptism and Membership from Mechanicsville Baptist Church.

Mr. Weatherford was predeceased by his wife, Linda Howle Weatherford; one son, Jamie Weatherford; and his father, James E. Weatherford.

Survivors include his mother of Darlington; his step–father, William Gregory of Darlington; one daughter, Stacey (Kirkland) Gandy of Society Hill; one brother, Ken (Karen) Weatherford of Darlington; his maternal grandmother, Essie K. Teal of Scranton, and a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Kelly Weatherford.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

LOUISE H. AMERSON

Funeral services for Louise Hopkins Amerson, 66, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. James E. Beck Jr. officiating.

Mrs. Amerson, widow of Keith Amerson Sr., died Sunday, June 22. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late George W. and Nellie Moody Hopkins.

Surviving are two grandchildren, Keith (Harley) Amerson III and Amanda Lou Amerson, of Hartsville; two great–grandchildren and a sister, Mary Lewis Capell of Hartsville.

Mrs. Amerson was predeceased in death by a son, Keith Amerson Jr.

VIRGINIA KELLY

Funeral services for Virginia Kelly will be held at 2 p.m Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Second Baptist Church with burial following in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Hines Funeral Home. The Kelly family will receive visitors at the home of her daughter, Hattie Woods, at 611 Birchleaf Dr., Hartsville.

Mrs. Kelly died Tuesday, June 24, at Morrell Memorial Nursing Center. She was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Asa and Lillian Murdock Jeffery. She was a member of Second Baptist Church where she was president of the Kitchen Committee and was a member of the Usher Board.

Survivors include seven daughters, Hattie Woods, Vanessa Addison and Hazel (Charles) Enoch, all of Hartsville, Joan Hall of Florence, Jeanette (Gilliam) Bond of Rock Hill, Mary (Clarence) Keel of Chadbury, N.C., and Betty (Tyrone) Ferrowh of Newark, Del.; three sons, Heyward Kelly of Hartsville, Ronald (Charlena) Kelly and Tandy (Shelia) Kelly, both of Zion, Ill.; a sister, Ernestine (Avon) Daniels of New York, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren, 13 great–grandchildren and one great–great–grandchild.

BETHUNE — Funeral services for Lewis L. Tidwell, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Harmony Baptist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Holland and Pat Minihan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. Visitation will be tonight, from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

MARY McKENZIE

Funeral services for Mary Northcutt McKenzie, 80, were held at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Ashland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbee Parsons officiating. Burial followed in Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Ashland United Methodist Church, PO Box 9, Lydia, SC 29079.

Mrs. McKenzie, widow of Joe Randolph McKenzie, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Timothy Benjamin and Carrie King Northcutt. She was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son, Larry McKenzie of Lydia; daughter, Margaret Tootie McCutchen of Hartsville; sister, Bee N. Ham of Hartsville; brothers, Abbie Northcutt of Macon, Ga., Timothy Benjamin Northcutt II of Hartsville; grandchildren, Jim McKenzie, Laura McCaskill, Sharon McKenzie, Eve McCutchen; and great–grandchild, Sydney McCaskill. She was preceded in death by her grandchild, Max McCutchen.

KATHLEEN C. BROWN

Kathleen Carroway Brown, 73, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at her residence. Arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home.

CHERYL LYNN GRIGGS

Cheryl Lynn Griggs, 34, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003. The family will receive friends at the home of Janet Cook, 2343 Ruby Rd., Hartsville. Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home will announce funeral plans later.
