JAMES McCUTCHEON

TIMMONSVILLE — Memorial services for Robbie James Jamey McCutcheon, 32, who died Nov. 7, 2004, will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. The family will receive friends at the home of James and Shirley Broach this evening, Nov. 10, until 9 p.m., 1321 Railroad Ave., Hartsville.

Jamey was born in Florence County, the son of Shirley Joyce Broach and the late Robbie McCutcheon.

Surviving are his mother and step–father, Shirley Joyce and James Broach of Hartsville; son, Nicholas McCutcheon of Florence; sister and brother–in–law, Lisa and Brad Lee of Florence; brother, James Russell Broach of Hartsville; step–sisters, Bee Bee Broach Atkinson of Hartsville and Jamie Lee Robbins of Maryland; grandmother, Jessie Oliver of Florence; special uncle and aunt, Alan and Mary Lou Reynolds of Timmonsville; niece, Savannah Lee of Florence; nephew, Tyler Lee of Florence; several other uncles and aunts.

ELIZABETH L. BRIDGES

Funeral services for Elizabeth Louise Libba Gregg Bridges were held on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth L. Nelson officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn cemetery, directed by Hines Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Bridges was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Eliza Richardson Gregg. She was a graduate of Butler High School in Hartsville.

She was married to the late Jerry Bridges, and they were the parents of five children. One of her children, George, preceded her in death. Three of her brothers and two grandchildren also predeceased her.

Mrs. Bridges was a lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church. She was also a faithful member of the Household of Ruth. Libba, as she was known to her family and friends, worked for over 25 years at Sanitary Dry Cleaners as a presser. Her presence from among us will be sadly missed.

Surviving to cherish her loving memory are two sons, Charles (Lily) Bridges of El Paso, Texas, and Joseph (Deborah) Bridges of Lamar; two daughters, Sheila Bridges and Christi (T. James) Peterson both of Hartsville; one sister, Edna Mae Gregg of Whiteville, N.C.; two sisters–in–law, Geneva Watson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Edna R. Gregg of Hartsville; her special granddaughters, Lanelle (Bobby) Bridges and Christi Peterson; her step–grandchildren, Antwone Burris and Cory McClain; her special niece, Linda (Anthony) Jones; four great–grandchildren; other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and very dear friends.

GRACE REYNOLDS

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Grace Reynolds, 82, will be held today, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at Cassatt Baptist Church, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville.

Surviving are her children, Laverne Reynolds of Cassatt, Carl Reynolds of Camden, Lillian Tarvin of Wichita Falls, Texas; siblings, Mae Griffitts and James (Boots) Shoemake of Hartsville; grandchidren, great–grandchildren and great–great–grandchildren.

LENWOOD FURR

Memorial services for Lenwood H. Furr, 91, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Bob Cline and the Rev. Dr. Aubrey Floyd will officiate, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church parlor from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Furr, widower of Muriel deLawyer Furr, died Saturday, Oct. 23. Born in Wake County, N.C., he was a son of the late Lemuel H. and Bertha Blackley Furr. He came to Hartsville in 1937 and had several business interests before retirement from Williams Leasing Co. in 1977. He retained his association with S.C. Federal Saving Bank for 25 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class. He previously served as president of Hartsville Merchants Association, director of the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, president of Prestwood County Club, and city councilman for three terms. He helped organize the Hartsville Rescue Squad and was a trustee for 20 years. He was past president of the Civitans and was twice named Civitan of the Year.

Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Bennett of Norman, Okla., Susan Williamson of Waco, Ga.; five grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to the First Baptist Church, Box 69, Hartsville, SC 29551.

TOMMY EASTERLING

Graveside services for Thomas Clarence Easterling, 62, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 5, 2004, at Magnolia cemetery. The Very Rev. Ted Duvall and the Rev. Dr. Bob Cline will officiate, with Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home in charge. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Dr. Suite 311, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mr. Easterling died Wednesday, Nov. 3. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Martha McIntosh Easterling. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Tommy was employed with Sonoco for 38 years and was a member of the Old Timers Club. He loved his faithful companion, Lucy.

Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Clark and Janet Easterling of Greenville; sister and brother–in–law, Ann and William O'Neal of Hartsville.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Meta Gainey.

ARTHUR MATUSE

Funeral services for Arthur L. Matuse, 84, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 5, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Becky Jones will officiate with burial in Magnolia cemetery.

Mr. Matuse died Tuesday, Nov. 2. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Nathan and Ella Grant Matuse. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, was retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers club. He was a very loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Lafern Petty Matuse of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, James and Sheila Amerson of Yankton, S.D.; daughters and son–in–law, Pat and Buckwheat King and Lavel Amerson, all of Hartsville; grandchildren, Stacy Seymour, Joey Horton, Machelle Riley, Scotty Horton, Chris Bartley, Butch Waldron, Shannon Waldron, Vance Amerson, Jamie Amerson, Kelly Amerson; seven great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Horton.

SARAH B. ABERNETHY

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A celebration service for Mrs. Sarah Byrd Abernethy, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 5, 2004, at Myers Park Baptist Church, corner of Queens Road and Selwyn Avenue, directed by Gaskins Services of Charlotte, N.C.

Mrs. Abernethy, known as Mama for her many loving gifts, passed to the care of the Lord Sunday afternoon, Oct. 31, in the restful peace of her home. She was born and raised in Darlington County and was the daughter of Robert Dority Byrd and Mary Birdie Byrd. She was valedictorian of Antioch High School Class of 1943. Sarah was a devoted and loving mother whose gentle life spread kindness, light and Southern–style home cooking to any whose path she crossed. Her generous qualities of hospitality and quiet abiding love for both her family and neighbors alike were her gifts for many years at her longtime Charlotte home.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Anna Stogner of Hartsville, and former husband, Ernest Tug Abernethy. Her family includes her three boys, Ernie (Martha) , John and David (Susan) Abernethy; her brother, Mr. Ashton Byrd of Hartsville; and four grandchildren Tommy, Jessie, Chris and Mackenzie.

SISSY HALL

Funeral services for Carolyn June Sissy Hall, 61, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Alvin Rogers and Becky Boykin officiated with burial in First Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Mrs. Hall died Tuesday, Nov. 2. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Kizzie Smith Hall and the late William Anglish Hall. She was a beloved mother and grandmother, willing to give and help anyone in need. She had a Christian heart and attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church and Bishopville Tabernacle. Sissy loved reading, cross–stitching and spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law, Charles Andrew and Robin Boykin of Hartsville, Marcus Andre' and Donna Boykin of Hartsville, Eric Anglish and Becky Boykin of Hartsville; daughter and son–in–law, Tysha Montez and Larry Scalf of Hartsville; mother, of Hartsville; sister, Joanne Hall Beverly of Hartsville; brother, Carlton Pedro Hall of Hartsville; 12 grandchildren.

DEBORAH E. LAMB

DARLINGTON — Funeral services for Deborah Ellen Gugin Lamb, 49, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 5, 2004, in the Kistler–Hardee Chapel, conducted by pastor Frankie Tanner and the Rev. Jody Wynn. Burial will follow in Selph Family cemetery, directed by Kister–Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lamb died Tuesday, Nov. 2. She was born in Flint, Mich., and was the daughter of the late William Butts and Frances Ella Gugin. She attended Mechanicsville Baptist Church and First Free Will Baptist Bible Church. Mrs. Lamb enjoyed traveling and was a free spirit who helped others and loved her family and friends. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas. Cookouts were a pastime favorite and she loved horses.

Mrs. Lamb was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Frankie Butts.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Mack Lamb of the home; three sons, Jeremy John Lamb of Sumter, Nathan Allen Lamb and Kyle Andrew Lamb, both of Darlington; three brothers, William Butts Jr., Ernest Coy Butts and Andrew Jessie Butts, all of Flint, Mich.; four grandchildren, Matthew, McKenzie, Deborah and Abbigail; and a special friend, Ruby Selph.

COLLIN POWELL

Funeral services for Collin William Powell, 28, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford officiating. Burial was at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, in Wood Memorial Park cemetery in Greer, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to St. Luke United Methodist Church Youth Ministry Program, 302 Dunlap Drive, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Collin died Friday, Oct. 29. Born in Nashville, Tenn., he was a son of Russell F. and Connie Coker Powell. He was a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in forestry and business. Collin was employed with Duncan Boat Harbor in Charleston, and was an avid outdoorsman from the mountains to the salt water. He was a tissue and eye donor. This donation has the potential to positively affect as many as 72 people. His joy was in making other people happy.

Surviving are his father and mother of Hartsville; brother, Chad R. Powell of Lyman; paternal grandparents, Claude F. and Bettie Duncan Powell of Lyman; maternal grandparents, Ted William and Genelle McBee Coker of Boiling Springs.

RUSSELL WACKER

Memorial services for Russell Arthur Wacker, 77, were held at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at New Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Rick Schubert and Todd Jeffords officiating, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Providence Baptist Church, 1884 Antioch Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550, or The National Kidney Foundation of SC, 500 Taylor St., Suite 101, Columbia SC 29201.

Mr. Wacker died Saturday, Oct. 30. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., he was a son of the late George Gottlieb and Dorothy Mersereau Wacker. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church and a member of the VFW Post in Spindale, N.C. He served in the U.S. Army during three wars: World War II, Korea, and two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of service in July of 1966. After retiring he served on the Hartsville Police Department and later as a groundskeeper at Rutherfordton Hospital in North Carolina. He recently was employed as a security officer at Sonoco Products Co. in Hartsville.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Winslow Wacker of Hartsville; son and daughter–in–law, Russell and Peggy Wacker Jr. of Hartsville; daughters, Teri W. Copeland Melton and Rosemarie W. Sansbury of Hartsville; sister, Emily Kinsella of Toms River, N.J.; grandchildren, Chris Wacker, Crystal Abbott, Jason Sansbury, Jennifer S. Rangel, Jessica Sansbury, Ron Copeland Jr., Tonya Copeland Little, Randy Copeland, Robbie Copeland; nine great–grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Gloss; brothers, George Wacker and Charles Wacker; sisters, Dorothea Wacker, Elsie W. Cicero.

THELBERT GRANTHAM

Graveside services for Thelbert Grantham, 84, who died on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Savannah Advent Christian Church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, with the Revs. Michael Blake and Charles McLendon officiating.

Mr. Grantham was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Burgess A. and Zonie Mixon Grantham. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 41 years of service, was a member of the Old Timers Club, member of Savannah Advent Christian Church and a Veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Lou Beth Kelly Grantham of Hartsville; daughters, Beth G. Satterfield of Greenwood, Jennifer Lee of Mocksville, N.C., and Meg C. Grantham of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Ethel Grantham, Aleen Holland and Eileen Privette, all Hartsville; three grandchildren.
