J. BRATTON DAVIS

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for The Honorable J. Bratton Davis were held Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with burial in Elmwood Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were Michael M. Beal, John B. Butler III, George B. Cauthen, Todd R. Ellis, Robert C. Kelly, R. Geoffrey Levy, Bratton Riley and W. Keenan Stephenson. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.

Judge Davis died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004. Born in Hartsville on Oct. 27, 1917, he was the elder son of the late John Bratton Davis and Sarah Causey Dee Davis. A 1938 graduate of the University of South Carolina and 1940 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. He continued graduate study at Harvard Law School in 1941. He was commissioned as a line officer in the United States Navy serving during World War II principally in the South Pacific Theater of Operations.

From World War II until 1969, Judge Davis practiced law with the firm of Graydon, Davis and Suber. He was admitted to practice in all of the South Carolina courts, all of the federal courts and the High Court of American Samoa.

In 1948, the Junior Chamber of Commerce named Judge Davis Columbia's Young Man of the Year. He has served as: U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of South Carolina (1969–2000) ; Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of S.C. (1986–2000) ; chairman, State of South Carolina Development Board; Columbia Board of Directors of the South Carolina National Bank; Board of Directors of Security Federal Savings and Loan Association; president of the Columbia Museum of Art; vestryman, Trinity Cathedral; member of the Judicial Conference of the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; member of the Security and Facilities Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States; member of the Board of Directors of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation; member of the Board of Directors of the University of South Carolina Law School Partnership Board; member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia and Donald S. Russell Symposium Committee; member of the Board of Governors of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges; president of the Columbia Kiwanis Club; member of the Board of Directors of the Columbia Chapter of the American Red Cross; member of the Board of Directors of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis; chairman of the Donald Russell Gubernatorial Inauguration Committee; member of the Board of Directors of the Byrnes Foundation; and member of the Board of Directors of the James F. Byrnes Centennial Committee.

In 2000, Judge Davis was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor conferred by the State of South Carolina.

The J. Bratton Davis U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse was so named in his honor upon his retirement from the bench in 2000.

He held memberships in: Forest Lake Club; Palmetto Club; Centurion Society; South Caroliniana Society; Kappa Alpha Order; Omicron Delta Phi; The Columbia Ball; and South Carolina Historical Society.

Judge Davis is survived by his wife, Margaret Smyth McKissick Davis; sons, Sherwood McKissick Cleveland and his wife, Kathleen, of Camden, and William Choice Cleveland and his wife, Anne, of Charleston; daughter, Jean Davis Bruton and her husband, John C. Bruton Jr. of Columbia; brother, John Thorne Davis of Charleston; and grandchildren, Sherwood McKissick Cleveland Jr., Samuel Henry Edmunds Cleveland, John Connor Cleveland, Braden Cleveland Bergan, Margaret Cleveland Pitts, William Choice Cleveland IV, Margaret McKissick Bruton and John Calvin Bruton III.

EARL GENE POWERS

McBEE — Graveside services for Earl Gene Powers, 63, who died Oct. 29, 2004, will be held today, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. in Westview Memorial cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel.

Mr. Powers was born in Charleston a son of the late Earl Wayne Powers and Harris Dell Gatling Northcutt. He was owner of several Mobile Home Parks.

Surviving are his sister, Pat Powers Pruett of Charleston; niece, Renee Taylor of Summerville; nephew, Jimmy Gardner of Hannahan.

JESSIE J. BINGHAM JR.

Entombment for Jessie J. Bingham Jr., 80, who died Oct. 28, 2004, will be held in Darlington Memory Gardens, with funeral services held at a latter date, directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mr. Bingham was born in Delano, Tenn., a son of the late Rev. Jessie J. Bingham Sr. and Clara McFadden Bingham. He was retired from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Postal Service.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Williams Bingham of Valdosta, Ga.; son, Jessie J. Bingham III of Jupiter, Fla.; daughter, Dorothy Sue Winsted of Marathon, Fla.; sister, Sue Hickey of Hartsville; brother, Davis Blair Bingham, Chapel Hill, N.C.

JAMES W. MARSHALL

RICHMOND, Va. — Funeral services for James Walter Marshall were held at noon today, Nov. 3, 2004, from the Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel with interment at the Virginia Veterans cemetery in Amelia, Va., with military honors.

Mr. Marshall died Sunday, Oct. 31, at St. Mary's Hospital after an extended illness. He retired from Sonoco Products Co. as a district sales manager after 47 years of service. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge No. 173 and a former member of the Hartsville Civitan Club. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a member of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific aboard the USS Ralph Talbot as a pharmacist's mate.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Kay; and his beloved little dog, Nikki, who has been his constant companion; nieces, Kathy, Debbie, Beth and Cindy; nephews, Dr. Chris Marshall of Columbia and Miller Marshall of Hartsville; and a favorite brother–in–law, Ryland Ramsey of Sneedville, Tenn.

BERNETHA M. REED

Funeral services for Bernetha M. Reed, 64, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at St. John United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reed died Wednesday, Oct. 27, at her residence after an illness. She was born Darlington County, a daughter of the late Jasper and Louise Jeffery Mitchell. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Chester Reed Sr. of Hartsville; one daughter, Barbara Jean Reed; two sons, Levester Reed and Chester Reed Jr., all of Hartsville; one sister, Beulah Cotton of Hartsville; two brothers, Ernest Jeffery and Eric Foxx, also of Hartsville; eight grandchildren.

ELIZABETH BRIDGES

Elizabeth Bridges died on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at her residence after an illness. The family will receive friends at the residence at 1017 Myrtle St. Hines Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of all arrangements.

JENNIFER MEISSNER

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Jennifer Hall Meissner, 25, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at New Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Townsend and Mr. Stan Freeman officiating, with burial in Dutch Fork Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Brown–Pennington–Atkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Meissner, widow of Christopher Michael Meissner, died Thursday, Oct. 21. Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of Ted W. Hall and Susan S. and Donald Byerly. She was a graduate of Dutch Fork High School.

Surviving are her son, Blake Hall of Columbia; daughter, Dara Meissner of Columbia; father of Elgin; mother and step–father of Columbia; grandfather and step–grandmother, Joseph R. and Bessie Smith of Columbia; step–sister, Kerri Pennington of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Marilyn Smith; paternal grandparents, Lennes and Una Mae Hall Sr.

BYRIA L. SMITH

Funeral services for Byria Louise Smith, 67, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Harold L. & Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Oct. 19, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center after an illness. She was born in Washington, Ga., a daughter of the late John and Lorena Bradley. She received her education in the Darlington County public school system and was a member of Redemption Church of God in Christ.

Surviving are five daughters, Lorraine Davis of the home, Martha Ann McCall of McBee, Diane Brown of Hartsville, Ruby Norman of Atlanta, Ga., and Darlene Brown of Florence; three sons, Tommie Johnson of Darlington, James Phillips and Levern Phillips, both of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Queen and Irene; four brothers, John, Wade, Rubin and Louis; two daughters–in–law, Gloria and Delores; five sons–in–law, Tommie, Gary, Freddie, Michael and Danny; 18 grandchildren; 18 great–grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.

LULA Q. DILBECK

LAKE ALFRED, Fla. — Memorial services for Lula Quinn Dilbeck will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the National cemetery in Florence, directed by Cremation Services of Mid–Florida.

Mrs. Dilbeck died Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Lake Alfred, Fla. She was born on Jan. 29, 1932 in Ringgold, Ga. She came to South Carolina a year ago and was a homemaker. She attended Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Winter Haven, Fla. Mrs. Dilbeck was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Dilbeck.

Survivors are two sons, Ray Walters of Fayetteville, N.C., and Tim Walters of Hartsville; two daughters, Patz Fowle of Hartsville and Debra Walters of Darlington; two sisters, Sara Faye Talley of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Nancy Cothran of Honea Path; nine grandchildren and four great–grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

CLASSIE HICKMON

Funeral services for Classie Hickmon, 86, were held at 3:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at The Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hickmon died Monday, Oct. 18, at her residence after an illness. She was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Aaron and Ada Benjamin Abron. She received her education in the Lee County public school system. Mrs. Hickmon was a member of he Church In The Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith Inc.

Surviving are five daughters, Naomi (Ronnie Cooley) Hickmon of the home, Louise (Prince) McKay of Darlington, Rosalee Hickmon, Melinda Covington and Classie (Harry) Century, all of Bishopville; six sons, James Edward Hickmon and Leroy Hickmon, both of the home, Eddie (Eva Mae) Hickmon III, David (Ada Bell) Hickmon, Roosevelt (Mary Ann) Hickmon, all of Bishopville; one sister, Nora Cook of Bishopville; one brother–in–law, David (Ava Bell) Hickmon of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters–in–law; 57 grandchildren; 126 great–grandchildren; 30 great–great–grandchildren; two adopted children, Judith and Douglas Hickmon and a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

DANIEL G. STEPHENS JR.

WINSTON–SALEM, N.C. — Funeral services for Daniel Gillum Stephens Jr. 83, who died peacefully in his home in Winston–Salem, N.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, were held Monday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church near Jefferson with the Rev. Luis Gargiulo officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. Stephens was born in Bethune, a son of the late Daniel G. and Bleeker Mae Melton Stephens. He served as an air crewman in the U.S. Navy in both World War II and the Korean War. He also served in North Africa as a gunner in the armed guard in 1943 on the SS William Moulterie. He retired in 1979 from Southern Bell Telephone Co. as an account executive and was also a North Carolina licensed real estate broker. Mr. Stephens served as past president and chairman of the board of Forsyth Chapter of the American Cancer Society, a past member of the board of the Tanglewood Golf Association, and past chamber member of the City Sertoma Club. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, past president of the Salem Council, past president of the Life Member Group, and member of the American Legion Post, Clyde Bowling Post No. 55. Recently honored with the Life Member Award presented by Moose Lodge No. 466, he was a past governor, past Moose Tar Hill Legion No. 58. He was past Western vice president N.C. Moose Association. He also Held the Pilgrim Degree, the highest order bestowed by the Moose for outstanding service to the community, and greatly contributed to the furtherance of the Moose program.

Survivors include a daughter and son–in–law, Cynthia and Charles Griggs; sister, Carolyn Zeigler; brothers, J.B. Stephens, O.W. Stephens, Donald Stephens and his wife Louise, and Dale Stephens and his wife Doris; uncles, Eugene Melton and Vasco Geiger; grandchildren, Greg Stephens and his wife Donna, Tiffany Talbott, Cathy Couch and her husband Kevin, Stephen Griggs, Janet Johns and her husband Stefan, Sara Griggs and John Griggs in addition to eight great grandchildren

Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Gregory Stephens; brothers, Joel Stephens, Howard Stephens and Frank Stephens, as well as three infant siblings.

DAVID DRIGGERS

Graveside services for David Driggers, 59, who died Oct. 21, were held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Norton Funeral Home, with Dr. Gary Colboch officiating.

Mr. Driggers was born in Darlington County, a son of Zula Hilton Driggers White and the late B. Carl Driggers. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. and was a member of the Old Timers Club.

Surviving are his mother of Darlington; two daughters and sons–in–law, Donna (Michael) Gainey and Debra (Eddie) Sellers, all of Hartsville; brother, Dr. B. Carlisle Driggers of Lexington; sister, Linda Williams of Rock Hill; three grandchildren.
