Charlie Norman Betenbaugh Jr., 58, husband of Gail Lewis Betenbaugh of 238 Fairmont St., died July 1, 2003, at his home after an extended illness. Mr. Betenbaugh was born in Union on Aug. 5, 1944, a son of the late Charlie Norman Betenbaugh Sr. and Margaret Parks Betenbaugh. He was retired form Paragon Plastics and was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard, Lockhart Unit. Mr. Betenbaugh was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy B. and Brad Childers of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Betenbaugh of Chesnee and Christopher and April Betenbaugh of Union; two sisters, Helen Betenbaugh Lawson of Union and Joyce Betenbaugh Carson of Campobello; three brothers, Roper Betenbaugh, Bruce Betenbaugh and Bob Betenbaugh, all of Union; two grandsons, Luke Childers and Gavin Betenbaugh; a granddaughter, Charlie Betenbaugh; two step-granddaughters, Joie Brown and Tasha Desjardines; two step-great grandchildren, Jacob Brown and Riley Brown; his mother and father-in-law, Carl and Sarah Lewis of Union; and three special nieces, Dena Palmer, Jessica Parker and Haleigh Palmer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Shane Sherfield and Mr. Betenbaugh's nephews.

The following are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel at 2:45 p.m. Thursday form the honorary escort: Lewis Davis, Mike Parks, Jakie and Brenda Smith, Grady and Carol Fuller, Donald Robinson and Broadus Able. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30. The family is at the home, 238 Fairmont St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Jessie H. Fore
Former Union resident

Jessie Hulon Fore, 86, widow of James Edward Fore, formerly of Union, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at 8:15 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Bessie O. Fiske
Charleston native

Bessie Oglesby Fiske, 76, of Oakmont of Union, widow of the Rev. Carl A. Fiske, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 5:08 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Fiske was born in Charleston on July 4, 1926, a daughter of the late James and Wilhelmina Sullivan Oglesby. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, the Tomi Vaughan Sunday School Class, TeenAgers and the Recycled Teens. Mrs. Fiske was a graduate of North Charleston High School.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Cynthia) Coffer of Union and Mrs. Carl (Carol) Gwin of McGreger, Texas, two brothers, Emmanuel Oglesby and Albert Oglesby of Charleston; and two grandchildren, Susan Coffer Allen of Belmont, N.C. and Scott Coffer of Union. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday of Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Gideon Long and the Rev. Lester C. (Jack) Rich. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Scott Coffer, Ricky Murphy, Jay Coffer, Eddie Hines, Maurice Bevis, Brown Fant, Randy Travis and Lynn Eaves. The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 12:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Keen Agers, Recycled Teens and members of the Tomi Vaughan Sunday School Class.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 12 noon Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Coffer, 101 Carter St., Union. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Frances V. Garner
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Frances Vinson Garner, 86, formerly of S. Church Street, Buffalo, widow of Leroy Garner, died July 1, 2003, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. Garner was born in Buffalo on Oct. 4, 1916, a daughter of the late Grover and Nancy Faucette Vinson. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, after 40 years. Mrs. Garner was a member of Putman Baptist Church and the Guiding Light Sunday School Class of the church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kaye G. and Horace Corbett of Union; two sisters, Mrs. Clifford (Hazel ) Lawson and Mrs. Caleb (Lillian) Sherbert, both of Buffalo; a grandson, Garner Corbett of Rock Hill and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a brother, William H. (Bill) Vinson and three sisters, Grace Stone, Mary Smith and Eva Sanders.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Putman Baptist Church by the Rev. Donald Tillman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Sherbert, Harold Gregory, Martin Allen, Glenn Sherbert, Tim Sizemore, Ricky Scott and Sammy Scott. The members of the Guiding Light Sunday School Class of Putman Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Horace (Kaye) Corbett, 113 Crestview Dr., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Carolyn M. Gibson
Former Town of Lockhart employee

Carolyn McKnight Gibson, 50, wife of Jerry L. Gibson of 803 Bentley Town Road, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at 4:35 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Gibson was born in Lockhart on Dec. 11, 1952, a daughter of the late John L. McKnight Sr. and Carolyn Conard McKnight. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and the Spartanburg Horseman's Association. She was a graduate of Dorman High School and attended USC-Spartanburg and Greenville Tech. Mrs. Gibson was formerly employed with the Town of Lockhart.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Jamie L. Gibson and Jason L. Gibson of Union; a grandson reared in the home, Christian L. Gibson; her twin sister, Mrs. Mike (Marlyn M.) Hollifield of Pauline; a brother and his wife, John L. McKnight Jr. and Eugenia McKnight of Union; a special aunt, Jerusha C. Palmer and her daughter Carolyn A. Palmer of Lockhart; a sister-in-law, Sheila Gibson West of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be in Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mike Ennis, Mark Corwin, Mack Rash, Gerome Brooks, Hugh Gregory and Harold Montgomery.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 12:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Robert Earl Lawson and Dean Bentley. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 12 noon Friday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 803 Bentley Town Road, Union. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 373 Wesley Chapel Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Harry A. Haney
Retired from Liberty National Life Co.

Harry A. (Hooker) Haney, 74, husband of Nira Dill Haney of 113 Seigler Road, died Monday, June 30, 2003 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Haney was born in Union on March 24, 1929, a son of the late James R. Haney and Margarette Gallman Haney Dimico. He was retired after 39 years with Liberty National Life Co. and was a graduate of Union High School where he was a member of the UHS Hall of Fame.

Mr. Haney was a coach for Dixie Youth Baseball for several years. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Terri Haney Canine and her husband, Bill of Alpharetta, Ga. and Kimberly L. Haney of Union; a son, Harry A. (Toney) Haney and his wife, Pam, of Union; and four grandchildren, Matthew Canine and Stephen Canine, both of Alpharetta, Ga., Betsy Haney and Blake Haney, both of Union; and a last surviving aunt, Rita Greene of Union.

Mr. Haney was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Haney. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Donald Cohen, Bob Blakely, Vernon Bishop, Jimmy Cheek, Perrin Dill and Pee Wee Greene.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to funeral services. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church St., Union, S.C. 29379 or to the American Heart Association, 301 University Ridge, Greenville, S.C. 29601. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Reuben Johnson Sr.
Union native

Reuben Johnson Sr. died Sunday, June 29,2003, in New York City. He was the son of the late Wadious and Pearl Johnson. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

John D. Puckett
World War II veteran

NEWBERRY John D. Puckett, 85, of 2530 Fair Ave., Newberry, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Puckett was born on Sept. 24,1917, in Laurens County, a son of the late G. R. and Florence Brown Puckett. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of the Kendall Co., Oakland Plant.

Mr. Puckett is survived by his wife, Florence Littlejohn Puckett of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Thom Peer of Brunson; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Larry Champion of Newberry and Dorothy and John Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Otis and Dorothy Puckett of Whitmire; five grandchildren who were reared in the home, Casey S. Morgan, Misty W. Stockman, Melissa Barbare, Nickie Woodward and Woody Champion; two great grandchildren, Christopher and Danielle Reeves; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Elbert Puckett and sisters, Lois Rollins, Inez Lawry, Lola Eskews and Ruth English. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry. Visitation will be from 6:30 until 7:30 tonight at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Albert K. Sykes
Vietnam veteran

FOREST CITY, N.C. Funeral services for Albert Kenneth Sykes, 62, of Forest City, were held at 11 this morning at the McGranaghan Lesjack Funeral Home by the Rev. Patrick Albert. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Mr. Sykes, a native of New York City, was the son of Amelia H. Zedar Sykes of Forest City and the late Albert Sykes. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam war.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter, Aileen Floyd of Jonesville; four grandchildren, three nieces and a nephew. Mr. Sykes was preceded in death by two sons, Peter and William, and a sister, Edith. McGranahan-Lesjack Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Jessie Mae Queen
Retired from Union Mill

Jessie Mae Ammons Queen, 93, affectionately known as (Aunt Jett,) formerly of 305 Hicks St., widow of Robert E. Queen, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at 1:20 p.m. in the B.J. Workman Hospital in Woodruff. Mrs. Queen was born in Whitmire on Dec. 5, 1909, a daughter of the late Bob and Dorcus Sanders Ammons. She was a member of the Union Church of God and was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant. Mrs. Queen was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are five granddaughters, Susan Queen Steele, Beth Queen, Mrs. Edward (Katie Q.) Burnett, Mrs. Dodson (Lisa) Patterson and Mrs. Steven (Tracy) Cannon; a grandson, Rick and Georgia Queen; four great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Vivian Queen and Virginia Queen Palmer.

Mrs. Queen was predeceased by two sons, Bobby Joe Queen and Bruce D. Queen. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Buster Ball. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home of her daughter-in-law, Virginia Queen Palmer, 708 Woodruff St. Extension, Woodruff. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
