Newberry County native

WHITMIRE - Mary Mars Taylor, 96, of 1730 S. C. Highway 66, Whitmire, widow of Virgil Clyde Taylor, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at 4:50 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Taylor was born in Newberry County on Dec. 14, 1906, a daughter of the late Henry E. and Minnie Spell Mars. She was a member of the Heritage Wesleyan Church of Whitmire.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Linda Taylor of Whitmire; two granddaughters, Deborah Taylor Faulkner of Raleigh, N.C., and Kimberly Taylor Glenn of Union; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Minnie M. Price of Whitmire.

Private graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Whitmire Cemetery conducted by the Rev. James Bannister. The family is at the home, 1730 S.C. Highway 66, Whitmire, and will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the graveside service. Memorial may be made to the Heritage Wesleyan Church, Whitmire, S.C. or to the First Baptist Church, Whitmire, S.C. 29178. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Laura M. Thomas
Homemaker

CHESTER - Laura McKinney Thomas, 68, wife of Johnny H. Thomas of 2121 Chester School Road, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Chester Hospital. A native of Chester, she was a daughter of the late Olin F. and Ruby Y. McKinney. A homemaker, she was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and a graduate of Chester High School.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Mike Thomas of Rock Hill; a daughter, Mrs. Stewart (Ann) Grant of Chester; two brothers, William McKinney of Columbia and Frank McKinney of Chester; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope United Methodist Church by the Rev. Chris Snelgrove.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie St., Chester. Memorials may be made to Arthritis Foundation, 7 Woodlawn Green, Suite 217, 5019 Nations Crossing, Charlotte, N.C., 28217 or to New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2056 Baton Rouge Road, Chester, S.C. 29706. Barron Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Ruth L. Turner
Retired hairdresser

Ruth Long Turner, 77, wife of Henry Turner of 635 Bailey Road, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at 6:45 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Turner was born in Buncombe County, N.C., on May 4, 1926, a daughter of the late Dewey and Annie Liner Long. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church. Mrs. Turner was a retired hairdresser.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Debra Turner of Lugoff; two grandchildren, Allison T. and Brian Massey of Charleston and Matthew Turner of Lugoff; and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Reece Massey. Mrs. Turner was predeceased by a brother, Claude Long.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Michael Evans. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Bobby Turner, Donnie Sanders, Tommy Adams, Eric Inglett and Neal Turner. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30.

The family is at the home, 635 Bailey Road. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Baptist Church, P.O. Box 428, Buffalo, S.C. 29323. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ruth Shipman Hutcherson
Retired Graham Cash district manager

Ruth Shipman Crocker Hutcherson, 80, wife of L.C. Hutcherson, of Oakmont Residential Center, died Oct. 21, 2002, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Hutcherson was born in Spartanburg, Nov. 11, 1921, a daughter of the late Edward and Martha Floyd Shipman. She was first married to the late Dewey Crocker.

Mrs. Hutcherson was retired district manager with Graham Cash Co. and was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband are two step-sons and their wives, Wayne and Janice Hutcherson of Union and Cecil and Brenda Hutcherson of Lyman; one sister, Frances Marler of Mobile, Ala.; two grandchildren and several step-grandchildren. Mrs. Hutcherson was predeceased by a son, Arthur Crocker.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Joy Baptist Church by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Scott Hutcherson, Jeff Calvert, Troy Wright and Brian Robinson. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday prior to the service from 2:45 until 3:45 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Joy Baptist Church, Organ Fund, 657 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The family is at the home of her step-son, Cecil and Brenda Hutcherson, 252 Ponderosa Dr., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Azalee A. Lybrand
Founding member of Meals on Wheels program

Azalee Adams Lybrand, 91, widow of Ralph E. Lybrand, of 1001 West Main St., died Oct. 19, 2002, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Lybrand was born in the Kelton Community of Union County on May 22, 1911, a daughter of the late Richard and Anna Fowler Adams. She attended Lockhart High School and worked at Union Mill prior to operation and retiring from the (Laundry Mat) On West Main St.

Mrs. Lybrand was a founding member of the Meals on Wheels Program of Union Co. where she served on the advisory board. Mrs. Lybrand was a member of the Martha Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as a former Grand Matron. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School in the Children's Department for a number of years. She was a member of the Mary Lybrand Sunday School Class and served as treasurer of the Louise Brooks Circle of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Lybrand was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. James (Barbara P.) Hord and Mrs. Marvin (Peggy Lee) Bettis both of Union; one nephew, Robert E. Lee of Columbia; a God-daughter, Mrs. Michael (Amy H.) Leonhardt of North Augusta; one great-great-niece who lived with Mrs. Lybrand for a number of years, Mrs. Chad (Heather P.) Dugas of Fort Walton, Fla.; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lybrand was predeceased by four sisters, Elsie Turner, Ada Lee, Mary Adams and Evelyn Parks; and three brothers, Aiken Adams, Jess Adams and Wales Adams. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Ralph Bowling. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jim Stepp, Franklin Pridemore, Monty Kingsmore, Chris Ketterman, Tony Gregory, Horace Owings, Dick Jenkins and Don Jenkins. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday to form the honorary escort: M.C. Hughey, D.W. Lawson, Brent Gossett, Judson Gregory, Bob Gist, Roger Harris, Ansel Gilliam, Leroy Frost, Joe Hulon, Bruce Huggins, Charlie Vaughan, Vickie Gregory, Kelli Walton and members of the Mary Lybrand Sunday School Class.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, 417 Rice Ave., Union, or to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union. The family is at the home of her niece, Rev. and Mrs. James Hord, 1005 West Main St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Willie Mae Young
Employed with Elks Lodge

Willie Mae Young, 88, of 113 Calhoun St., widow of Irvin Young, died Oct. 17, 2002, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in North Carolina on Oct. 25, 1913, a daughter of the late Walter and Julia Hayes Jeter. She was a cook at the Elks Lodge and a mid-wife. She was a member of Beaty's Chapel AME Zion Church and a former choir leader.

Survivors include four daughters, Fannie Mae (Henry Jr.) Means, Elwillie Lindsay and Betty Jean Thompson all of Union and Annie Ruth Monoso of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Louise Freeman of California and Rev. Martha Owens of Union; 31 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Beaty's Chapel AME Zion Church by the Rev. Doris Holmes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Viewing and visitation will be today from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11:30 a.m. The family is at her home, 113, Calhoun St., Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Douglas Fernandez
Brick mason

Douglas Fernandez of 133 Shady Hill Drive, husband of Annette Murphy Fernandez, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Fernandez was the son of Ruth Fernandez of Charlotte; a member of Greater Trinity AME Church where he served as a steward and a 1957 graduate of Sims High School. He was a brick mason by trade and employed as a clerk at Stew & Brew.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two sisters, Mary L. Dudley and Geraldine Bates, both of New York. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joanne A. Revis
EnMark employee

Joanne Alvarez Revis, 48, of 200 Proctor Road, wife of Roy Revis, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at 1 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Revis was born in Sinajana, Guam, on May 23, 1955, a daughter of Eddie Midims and the late Agripina Flores Alvarez. She attended the Christian Fellowship Baptist Church and was employed as a clerk at EnMark.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Jolynne Manibusan Chitwood of Wellford; a son, Matthew Manibusan of Union; and two grandchildren, Novah Manibusan and Matthew Manibusan Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith.

Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 9. The husband will be at the home of his sister, Brenda Pauley, 803 Meansville Road, and the children will be at the home of George Ponder, 166 Camelot Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bobby G. Smith
Founder of Smith Printing

Bobby Gene Smith, 63, devoted husband and father, of 424 Putman Road, Buffalo, husband of Jean B. Smith, died at his home Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at 3:30 a.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Smith was born in Union County on July 9, 1940, a son of the late Wilson and Myrtle Greer Smith. He was a member of Putman Baptist Church, a former deacon and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Union High School and attend Spartanburg Tech and was former owner and founder of Smith Printing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Debroh and Mike Southard of Greenwood and Susan Smith of Buffalo; a son, Mark and Donna Smith of Buffalo; two granddaughters, Brandy Smith and Kirsten Smith, both of Buffalo and grandson Gene Smith of Greenwood; his father-in-law, Ernest OÕShields of Buffalo; special friends, Ben and Sandra Smith of Union; a brother, Joe Smith of Union; and two sisters, Helen West of Seneca and Peggy Rowe of Georgia.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman, the Rev. Otis McCluney and Chaplain Coy Callicott. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at the home, 424 Putman Road, Buffalo, where it will remain until the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
