Ruby Beacham

Ruby Beachman, of 116 Simmons St., died at her home Oct. 21, 2002 after a long illness. The family is at the home of a daughter, Cynthia Jeter, 119 Marcellus Street, Brockman Heights. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Ruth Shipman Hutcherson
Retired district manager

Ruth Shipman Crocker Hutcherson, 80, wife of L.C. Hutcherson, of Oakmont Residential Center, died Oct. 21, 2002, after a period of declining health. Mrs. Hutcherson was born in Spartanburg, Nov. 11, 1921, a daughter of the late Edward and Martha Floyd Shipman. She was first married to the late Dewey Crocker. Mrs. Hutcherson was retired district manager with Glamour Shop and was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two step-sons and their wives, Wayne and Janice Hutcherson of Union and Cecil and Brenda Hutcherson of Lyman; one sister, Frances Marler of Mobile, Ala.; two grandchildren and several step-grandchildren. Mrs. Hutcherson was predeceased by a son, Arthur Crocker.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Mt. Joy Baptist Church by Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Scott Hutcherson, Jeff Calvert, Troy Wright and Brian Robinson.

The family will receive friends at the church today prior to the service from 2:45 until 3:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to Mt. Joy Baptist Church, Organ Fund, 657 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The family is at the home of her step-son, Cecil and Brenda Hutcherson, 252 Ponderosa Dr., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Melvelyn S. Johnson
Renfro Company employee

CARLISLE - Melvelyn Savage Johnson, 44, wife of Robert Lewis Johnson, of 3421 Janie G. Goree Boulevard, Carlisle, died Oct. 17, 2002 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late Dever and Cleo Stevens Savage. A 1976 graduate of Union High School, she attended St. Luke A. M. E. Zion Church and was employed as a boarder at the Renfro Sock plant in Whitmire.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Travis Fitzgerald Savage of the home; two daughters, Ternarilyn Shananda Spencer and Terri Lynn Spencer, both of the home; a brother, John K. (Hansi) Savage of Maryland; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church by the Revs. James Lyles, Willie B. Titus and Truman Savage.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the home, 3421 Janie Goree Blvd. this evening. Public viewing will be at the Whitney Funeral Home today from 1 until 7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon. The body will be placed in the church Wednesday at 2 p.m. to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Geraldine H. Lawson
Retired from 3-M Glass Co.

BUFFALO - Geraldine Hughes Lawson, 67, of 346 Joe Eubanks Rd., Buffalo, widow of John D. Lawson Jr., died Tuesday morning in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Lawson was born in Spartanburg County on June 2, 1935, a daughter of the late William McKinley Hughes and Lottie Jane Rhodes Hughes. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church and was retired from 3-M Glass Company of Laurens.

Surviving are two daughters, Paulette Ivey of Buffalo and Debra West of Union; two sons, William Lawson of Bervard, N.C. and Shane Lawson of Buffalo; three sisters, Faye Simmons and Francena Moore both of Enoree and Pearline Armstrong of Gray Court; two brothers, Roger Hughes and Kenny Hughes both of Enoree; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Paulette Ivey, 792 Sugar Creek Rd., Buffalo. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Margaret Norman

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Margaret Norman, of 2525 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio, died Oct. 17, 2002. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Brown AME Chapel, Almo Place, in Cincinnati with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery. Announcement courtesy of Union Community Funeral Home.

Judy Renee Smith-Sabree

Computer analyst TRENTON, N.J. Judy Renee Smith-Sabree, 37, wife of Daniel Sabree, of Trenton, N.J., died Oct. 15, 2002 at her home. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 24, 1965, a daughter of James and Emma Smith. She was employed as a computer analyst.

Surviving in addition to her parents and husband are a daughter, Hana Inez Sabree of the home; three sisters, Karen M. Smith of Philadelphia; Sheryl A. Collette of Levittown, Pa. and Deloris Smith of N.Y.; a brother, Michael T. Smith of Sacramento, Calif. and Bonnie Clark who was reared in the home as a sister.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at New Hope AME Zion Church conducted by Rev. J.W. Boyd. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be at the funeral home today from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of her parents, 147 Minnow Bridge Road, Sedalia community. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Margaret Jeter Gilliam
Former teacher

Margaret Frances Sis Roper Jeter Gilliam, 91, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at National Health Care-Greenville after several years of declining health. She was born in Chester on Aug. 10, 1912, the daughter of the Rev. Dr. John Caswell Roper (1874-1958) and Edith Bull Moseley Roper (1875-1963). Dr. Roper was a Methodist minister and served churches throughout upstate South Carolina during Mrs. Gilliam's childhood and youth.

Mrs. Gilliam graduated from Greenville High School and Converse College where she majored in history and played field hockey. After college, she was a public school teacher until her marriage in 1939 to the late Clarence Augustus (Gus) Jeter Jr. (1902-1978). They lived in Carlisle throughout their marriage where Mr. Jeter was a rural mail carrier and farmer. Mrs. Gilliam returned to teaching in 1953 and taught in the public schools of Union County. She taught in the last one-room, one-teacher schoolhouse in South Carolina. When she retired, she was a third grade teacher at Carlsan School in Carlisle.

In 1982, she married Dr. William Farr Gilliam Jr. (1913-1995) of Union. Dr. Gilliam was a retired research chemist from General Electric, having spent his career working in Schenectady, N.Y. They also lived in Carlisle during their marriage. She was a longtime member of Carlisle Methodist Church where she served many years as the Sunday School superintendent.

Survivors include a son, Clarence Augustus (Gus) Jeter III of Prosperity and Carlisle; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Roper and Helen Bohlen Jeter of Greer; a son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon Moseley and Jane Hicks Jeter of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by grandchildren Sheldon (Leigh) Jeter and husband Daniel (Dan) Joseph Neppl of Glenview, Il., Elizabeth (Beth) Bohlen Hrubala and husband Michael (Mike) Andrew Hrubala of Spartanburg; Charles Roper Jeter Jr. and wife Jennifer Marie Cox Jeter of Huntersville, N.C. and Jefferson (Jeff) Moseley Jeter of Atlanta, Ga.

Mrs. Gilliam also has six surviving great-grandchildren: Helen Elizabeth Neppl, Michael Andrew (Drew) Hrubala Jr., Courtney Elizabeth Hrubala, David Jeter Hrubala, Caroline Marie Jeter and Elizabeth Leigh (Ellie) Jeter. In addition to her parents and two husbands, Mrs. Gilliam was preceded in death by her six brothers, John (Jack) Caswell Roper Jr., Sheldon (Shelly) Moseley Roper, Olin Watson Roper, Rufus Child Roper, Julian Westfield Roper and Charles Pinckney Roper. Sis was a devoted daughter, sister, wife and mother, a doting grandmother, and proud great-grandmother.

She was always a strong proponent of education, the succor of her parents in their old age, a pillar of her church and an enthusiastic supporter of her children and grandchildren in their every endeavor. The family will receive friends and family at Holcombe Funeral Home Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be at Carlisle Methodist Church Friday at 11 a.m. with burial services afterwards at The Jeter Cemetery in Carlisle. Memorials may be made to the Jeter Cemetery, c/o Mrs. William Jeter, 115 Park Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bobby G. Smith
Founder of Smith Printing

Bobby Gene Smith, 63, devoted husband and father, of 424 Putman Road, Buffalo, husband of Jean B. Smith, died at his home Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at 3:30 a.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Smith was born in Union County on July 9, 1940, a son of the late Wilson and Myrtle Greer Smith. He was a member of Putman Baptist Church, a former deacon and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Tech and was former owner and founder of Smith Printing.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and a son-in-law, Debroh and Mike Southard of Greenwood and Susan Smith of Buffalo; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Donna Smith of Buffalo; two granddaughters, Brandy Smith and Kirsten Smith, both of Buffalo; a grandson Gene Smith of Greenwood; his father-in-law, Ernest O'Shields of Buffalo; special friends, Ben and Sandra Smith of Union; a brother, Joe Smith of Union; and two sisters, Helen West of Seneca and Peggy Rowe of Georgia.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Putman Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Tillman, the Rev. Otis McCluney and Chaplain Coy Callicott. The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Gerald Graham, Larry Vinson, Scotty Childers, Lum Edwards, Randy Wilburn, Melinda Wilburn, Kelly Wilburn, Ray Lawson, Johnny Swofford, Pete McNamee and Bobby Bell.

Employees of Palmetto Hematology and Oncology and employees of the Gibbs Cancer Center are asked to sit in a group. The body is at the home, 424 Putman Road, Buffalo, where it will remain until the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ralph Sprouse
Retired from Lockhart Mill

Ralph (Tot) Sprouse, 85, of 113 South 2nd St., Lockhart, widower of Violet Garner Sprouse, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at 12:25 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Sprouse was born in Kelton on Aug. 2, 1918, a son of the late Wallace and Pauline Howell Sprouse. He was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church. Mr. Sprouse was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart plant.

Surviving are a daughter, Judith S. Cameron of Jonesville; a son, Donald R. Sprouse of Lockhart; a brother, Samuel H. Sprouse of Lockhart; a sister, Wallace Erma Blackmon of Union; a granddaughter, Cynthia Parton; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Sprouse was predeceased by a grandson, David R. Sprouse. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Joy Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Alan West.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30. The family is at the home of his son, Donald R. Sprouse, 312 North 3rd St., Lockhart. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

PACOLET - Rosa Lee Stafford, 83, of 201 Bryant Road, Pacolet, widow of Joseph Stafford, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 22, 2003, in Mary Black Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
