KAPLAN, Burton
Burton A. Kaplan died peacefully on the evening of April 29, 2002, surrounded by his family. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services in Synagogue Emanu-El, Thursday at 10 o'clock. Interment, Emanu-El cemetery, "Maryville."
Mr. Kaplan was born June 4, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Louis Kaplan and Rhea Schwartz Kaplan. He migrated to the Low Country in 1936 from the Windy City. He worked in the meat packing business. He was the retired owner and operator of the B.A. Kaplan Agency. He was active in numerous charitable organizations including Organization for Rehabilitation and Training (ORT); Charleston Jewish Federation; Synagogue Emanuel; Charleston Israel Bond Campaign and the Hebrew Orphan Society.
Burt expressed gratitude to his many friends in Charleston and the blessings this community gave to him.
He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth, from Salzburg Austria. He is survived by 2 sons, Ron and his wife Faith Kaplan of Hamilton, Ontario and Bob Kaplan of Asheville, N.C.; half-brother, Richard Kaplan and his wife Carol of Hollywood, Florida; 3 grandchildren, Rebecca Kaplan of Oakland, California, Jessica Kaplan of Burnaby, British Columbia and Jacob Kaplan of Washington, D.C.; a sister-in-law, Elsie Horowitz and her husband Harold of Northbrook, Illinois; a brother-in-law, Seymour Schwartz of St. Louis, Missouri; 4 nephews, Harvey Schwartz of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, Don Schwartz of Larkspur, California, Art Horowitz of Rockville, Maryland, Burt Horowitz of Skokie, Illinois; one niece, Sheryl Rosenfeld of Skokie, Illinois and numerous beloved first, second and third cousins and one uncle from the extended family who originated in Chicago.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to ORT and the Charleston Jewish Federation are very much appreciated in recognition of the great value Burt placed on both local community and wider charitable institutions.

DEAN, Joseph
WALTERBORO - Mr. Joseph James "Jimmy" Dean, 62, of 314 Keegan Drive died Monday at Colleton Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Beaufort National cemetery.
Mr. Dean was born in Baltimore, Maryland, a son of the late Julius and Dolly Hamilton Dean. He was retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard and was a United States Air Force veteran.
Surviving are 3 daughters, Cynthia Dumloa of Williamsburg, Va., Melody Dean of Richmond, Va., and Sara Dean of California, 2 brothers, Lawrence Dean of Walterboro and Robert Dean of Richmond, Ind., 5 sisters, Margie Ambrose of Glouseter, Va., Barbara Waldon of Dover, Delaware, Patsy Jenkins of Fredericksburg, Va., Helen Young of Dover, Delaware and Judy Murphy of Hampton, Va., and several grandchildren.
Friends may call at the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the service hour.

FLINT, Paul
Paul G. Flint, 81, of Cross, a retired Sergeant Major with the U.S. Marine Corps, died Saturday at a Summerville hospital.
The graveside memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Sunset Memorial cemetery, St. Stephen. Burial will be directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner.
Mr. Flint was born August 23, 1920 at Punta Gorda, Florida, a son of John H. Flint and Rubie Rasch Flint. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 5th Marine Division Association (Iwo Jima). He was a former Oakland Club Conservation Enforcement Officer.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Leeper Flint of Cross; daughter, Paula Jean Flint of James Island; sister, Pauline Knight of Venice, Fla.; nine nieces and nephews; many grand-nieces and nephews.

CREECH, James
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of April 27, 2002, James Obie Creech, husband of Mary Garnham Creech. Residence, North Charleston, S.C. Mr. Creech was born July 10, 1937 in Bamberg County, S.C., the son of the late James Creech and Lola Mae Otto Creech. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, a member of Harvest Times Assembly Church and American Legion Post #179.
He is survived by his mother, Lola O. Creech and his wife, Mary G. Creech, both of North Charleston; three sons, Obie Creech, Jr. of North Charleston, William Creech of Walterboro, and Tommy Creech of Columbia; a daughter, Sharon C. Morris of Summerville; three step-sons, Tony Pritchard of Columbia, Paul Finn of North Charleston and Bryan Finn of New York, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Iris Finn of North Charleston; a sister, Elizabeth Hightower of Santee, S.C.; a brother, Charles Creech of North Charleston; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Ballard was born May 17, 1948 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the son of William Eugene Ballard and Mable Sherbert Ballard Lindsey. He was the manager of Reeds Jewelry Store. He attended the College of Charleston and served with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
He is survived by his wife of Summerville, S.C.; one son, Lanny Ray Ballard, Jr. of Summerville, S.C.; one daughter, Trinity Elizabeth Ballard of Summerville, S.C.; one brother, Larry Eugene Ballard of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania; one granddaughter, Brittany Elizabeth Ballard and one aunt, Shirley Sherbert of Las Vegas, Nevada.

FERNANDEZ, Dorothy
Dorothy Driggers Fernandez, 55, of Cottageville, SC died Monday, April 29, 2002 at a local hospital.
The funeral will be held at Little Rock Holiness Church, Friday afternoon, May 3, 2002 at 3 o'clock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Parks Funeral Home Thursday evening from 6-9 PM.
Mrs. Fernandez was born April 27, 1947 in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Harry Driggers, Sr. and Mable Creel Driggers. She was a member of Little Rock Holiness Church.
Survivors include her son, Robert Gardner, Jr. of Cottageville, SC, a brother, Harry Driggers, Jr. of Tuscaloosa, AL and a grand-daughter, Karlene Mansifield of Cottageville, SC.
