Sandra K. Jenkins
former sales clerk

Sandra Kent Jenkins, 64, wife of Lester A. Jenkins of 702 Arthur Boulevard, died Nov. 11, 2002, at 10:02 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Jenkins was born in Union on Jan. 3, 1938, a daughter of the late Leroy and Hattie Belle Helton Kent. She attended Hebron Baptist Church and was formerly employed as a sales clerk.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Lisa Bailey of Union; two sons, Chris Jenkins of Florida and Timmy Jenkins of the home; a brother, Charles Kent of Boiling Springs; seven grandchildren, Alexandria Jenkins reared in the home, Daniel Bailey, Lacey Bailey, Michael Jenkins, Andrea Jenkins, Lauren Jenkins and Thomas Klusker all of Union.

Mrs. Jenkins was predeceased by a son, Michael Lester Jenkins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hebron Baptist Church by the Rev. David Toney. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Thomas Klusker, Ronnie Ellis, Arthur Jordan, David Jennings, Chris Kirby and Scotty Silvers.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 702 Arthur Boulevard, Union. Memorials may be made to the Hebron Baptist Church, 143 Hebron Church Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Frances K. Taylor
Former A&P and Belk employee

JONESVILLE - Frances Kelly Taylor, age 84, wife of Harry Ray Taylor of 127 South Fork Road, Jonesville, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at 1:55 p. m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Taylor was born in Kelly on Jan. 22, 1918, a daughter of the late Barth J. Kelly and Beatrice Faucett Kelly.

She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and a member of the Bonham Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. Taylor was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a former employee of the A&P Tea Co. and Belk.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 63 years are two daughters, Kaye T. House and her husband Don of Advance, NC. and Sara T. LaFountain and her husband Keene of Columbia; grandchildren, Andy and Christine House, Jeff and Robin House, Leigh and Aaron Loftin, Amie House, Marc LaFountain, and Kevin LaFountain; great-grandchildren, Caroline and Cate House, Tate and Kailey House; a sister, Ferol K. Robinson of Flagler Beach, FL., numerous sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by sisters, Mattie Kelly, Josie K. Ford, Margaret K. Whitaker and Faye K. Penland and a brother, Barth Kelly Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by the Reverend Scott Gilmer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family is at the home, 127 South Fork Road, Jonesville, and will receive friends at the church Friday from 1 until 2 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, Union Office, 432 B. North Duncan By-Pass, Union, S.C. 29379 or to the Children's Playground Equipment Fund, New Hope United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Warren Little, 473 Bob Little Road, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bobby Joe Wright
W.R. Grace Co. employee

CROSS ANCHOR - Bobby Joe Wright, 62, husband of Virginia Trammell Wright, of 464 Dillard Road, Cross Anchor Community, Enoree, died Nov. 13, 2002, at 2:02 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Wright was born in Union on July 22, 1940, a son of the late Nathan W. and Neelie Hood Wright. He was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church and was employed with W.R. Grace Co.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Bobby Eugene Wright and Nathan Stevie Wright Sr. both of Cross Anchor; two brothers, Frank Wright of Woodruff and Arthur R. Wright of Enoree; three grandchildren, Nathan Stevie Wright Jr., Joshua Steven Wright and Scott Jonathan Gullett. Mr. Wright was predeceased by a daughter, Peggy Sue Wright.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerry McKee. Burial will be in the PadgettÕs Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-9.

The family is at the home of his son, Bobby E. Wright, 326 Dillard Road, Cross Anchor Community, Enoree. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Judy B. Dixon
Retired teacher

Judy Ferol Blackwell Dixon, 68, of 204 Walker Heights, Union, widow of Lamar C. Dixon, died at her home Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at 5:40 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Dixon was born in Jonesville on March 20, 1935, a daughter of the late Ralph E. and Eva Harris Blackwell. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Dixon was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Technical College and was a retired physical education teacher and food service manager at Foster Park Elementary School and was a member of the American School Food Service Association.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Lynn and Donald Ivey, Rebecca Rae and Ben Alverson, all of Union and Karen Paige and Ed Walcher of Campobello; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris Jean and Fred Faucett and Betty Jane Gault, all of Jonesville and Barbara B. and Ronnie Lamb of Lockhart; a brother, Jimmy Dean Blackwell of Union; two grandchildren, Tiffany Nicole Roark and Dillon Dixon Ivey, both of Union; and a special friend, Darlene Brown of Spartanburg.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Joseph Stover and the Rev. Richard Conyers. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Gault, Robert F. Faucett Jr., Joey Blackwell, Bobby Mangum, Jim Brady, Rodney White and Ronnie Ivey. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30.

The family is at the home, 204 Walker Heights, Union. Memorials may be made to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Blvd., Suite 101, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Louis James Crutchfield
Former Whitmire resident

FT. PIERCE, Fla. Louis James Crutchfield of Ft. Pierce, formerly of Whitmire, died Nov. 8, 2003. He was the son of Queen E. Crutchfield and the late Willie Crutchfield and was formerly employed with N.C. Carolina Mutual Insurance of Union. Among the survivors are a son, Ricky Jeter of Whitmire, another son, seven brothers and seven sisters. Funeral services were held Nov. 8 in Ft. Pierce, Fla.

Demetrius D. Harris

CARLISLE - Master Demetrius Dorell Harris, 14-month-old son of Tommy Bernard Harris Jr. and Tammy Michelle Pitt of 1094 Tuckertown Road, Carlisle, died in Newberry County on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003. He was born in Union County on Sept. 7, 2002.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, Kevon Jamar Hughes of Union; a god-sister, Datiahya Injon Hill of Santuc; grandparents, Karen Green Stokes of Carlisle and Andy Pitt of Maryland; paternal grandparents, the late Tommy B. Harris and Selena Mae Gist; paternal great-grandparents, Mattie L. Harris of Carlisle and the late Tom B. Harris and Mrs. Luegene H. Gist of Union and the late Jason Gist; maternal great-grandparents, Madonna McHugh of Maryland and Georgia Blair of Oklahoma; paternal great-great grandmother, Alma Sims of Union; an aunt, an uncle, 28 great aunts and 26 great uncles; and a host of cousins and friends.

Graveside services will be held at noon Saturday at the Kelly Cemetery on the Herbert Road in Carlisle conducted by the Rev. Courtney Mills. Active pallbearers will be Terry Harris Jr., Eric DePratter, Juan Hunter and Andre Johnson. Public viewing will be Friday from 2 until 7 p.m. with visitation at the funeral home Friday from 6 until 7 p.m.

The family will be at their respective homes and at the home of his grandmother, Mattie Harris, 145 TB Drive, Carlisle and at the home of Karen Stokes, 1094 Tuckertown Road, Carlisle. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

William R. Browning
Retired from U.S. Air Force

Wallace Richard Brown-ing, 72, husband of Mariko Shikj Browning of 107 James St., died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Browning was born in Easley on June 27, 1930, a son of the late W. L. Browning and Gertrude Kidd Brown. He was a Methodist. Mr. Browning attended Whitmire Schools and completed high school in the U.S. Air Force where he received two years college credit.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years of service where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After his retirement, Mr. Browning worked as manager of Santa Maria Business Park in California, Broad River Storage of Columbia and Sunset Storage in North Columbia. Surviving in addition to his wife are two brothers and a sister-in-law, Rex L. Browning and his wife, Lizzie, of Columbus, Ind., and the Rev. W. Lloyd Browning of Ninety Six; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Aileen B. Johnson of Ninety Six and Bessie Ruth Cox and her husband, Alvin E. Cox, of Whitmire; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Browning was predeceased by a sister, Mildred B. Waldrop. The family is at the home, 107 James St. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Nicholas A. Gavalas
Master wood craftsman

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Nicholas Anthony Gavalas, 88, husband of Louise Jordan Paul Gavalas, died Nov. 12, 2002. Mr. Gavalas was born in Kolymnous, Greece in 1913, and was a resident of Augusta, Ga., since 1932. He was owner of Gavalas Furniture Makers and was a Master Wood Craftsman.

He was a life-time member of Elks Club, member of AHEPA Chapter 407, and served as Church Canter for many years. During World War II, he worked as a ship builder for A.J. Jones Construction Co. in Panama City, Fla.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Rev. Dr. Anthony Gavalas of Union and Joseph L. Gavalas of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Vikena G. Thigpen of Mitchell, Ga.; and Nikki G. Nance of North Augusta, Ga.; three step-daughters, Barbara Jo Roland of Grovetown, Ga.; Harriett L. Jones of Augusta, Ga., and O. Ruth James of Hephzibah, Ga.; a brother, Bill A. Gavalas of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Anastasia Gavalas of Athens, Greece; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gavalas was predeceased by his previous wife, Louise Fulcher Gavalas. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity by Father George Vaporis and Father Cyril Garrett. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Victor E. Gavalas, Nicholas G. Gavalas, Michael J. Gavalas, George A. Gavalas, Nick A. Gavalas, and Morgan C. Jones II. Honoary pallbearers will be W. Matt Roland II, Kevin Ray Roland, Jason V. James and J. Ron James Jr. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home with Trisagion at 8 p.m. immediately following visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 953 Telfair St., Augusta, Ga. 30901. Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 1134 Telfair St., Augusta, Ga., has charge of arrangements.

Essie M. Jennings
Retired custodial worker

Essie Murl Jennings, 65, of 312 Brockman Heights, wife of the late William Jennings, died Nov. 11, 2002, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Jennings was born in Union County on Feb. 28, 1937, a daughter of the late Woodrow and Alice Eison Smith. She was a retired custodial worker from Union High School and a member of Bethany AME Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Hazel Smith of Union and Sheila J. (Charles) Brown of Newberry; two sons, Rodney Mack Jennings and William Earl (Beverly) Jennings, both of Union; a nephew, formerly of the home, Jerry D. Smith of Union; four sisters, Aliceteen (Thomas) Harris and Jessie (Jimmy) Stewart, both of Jonesville, Millie (Lewis) Lindsay of Bronx, N.Y.; four brothers, Grover (Corrine) Smith of Union, Woodrow (Annette) Smith of Jonesville, Nelson Smith of York and Julius (Willie) Smith of Manhattan, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, other friends and relatives.

She was predeceased by grandchild, Stanley Eugene Smith Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at Bethany AME Church in Jonesville with the Rev. Janet Nelums officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p. m. Friday to await the hour of service.

Viewing and visitation will be until 9 p.m. today and on Friday from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The family is at her home, 312 Brockman Heights. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.
