Dorothy Olivia Davis

CHERAW - Dorothy Olivia Davis, 85, died Monday, January 13, 2014. Born in Bennettsville, SC she was a daughter of the late Julius Alexander and Gertrude Elizabeth Jackson Graham. She was the widow of Francis Davis. She was a member of the Cheraw Church of God. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be missed by her canine friend Chloe.

Surviving are a son, Thomas C. (Linda) Davis of Wilmington, NC, a brother, Ronnie Graham of St. Petersburg, FL, a sister Mary Flanagan of Florence, SC, grandchildren, Wendy (John) Roberts, Kevin (Rita) Whitman, Stephine (Brad) Robbins, Robyn Davis, great grandchildren Daniel Whitman, Jordan Whitman, Savannah Whitman, Reiss Robbins and an honorary grandchild Amber Parnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above and a daughter, Sandra Davis.

The family received friends 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Cheraw Church of God. A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Cheraw Church of God. Burial was in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

James Ellis Hammond

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - Retired First Sergeant James Ellis Hammond, 89, of Temple Hills, MD died Tuesday, January 7, 2014 in Greenbelt, MD. A graveside service with full military honors was held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17 at Foundry Hill Cemetery.

Hammond was a native of Cheraw and was the son of the late Robert and Ann Eliza Hammond. He was born April 22, 1924, the eldest son of 9 siblings. He graduated from Coulter Junior College and served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1969, a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked almost 20 years in the construction industry as a project superintendent with Davis Construction.

Hammond was preceded in death by his wife Claudia Carter Hammond and seven siblings.

He is survived by a sister Dorothy Ellison; nieces Cynthia Ellison and Janice Hammond; a devoted cousin and caregiver Mary Adrienne Hammond; cousins Wilford E. Hammond, Robert C. Hammond, Lenora Powe and a host of other relatives and friends.

Please send memorials in Mr. Hammond’s name to the Coulter Memorial Academy Alumni Association in Cheraw.

William 'Bill' Arthur Jacobs

CHERAW - William “Bill” Arthur Jacobs, 87, died Saturday, January 11, 2014. Born in Cheraw, SC he was a son of the late William Allen Jacobs and Jessie B. Jacobs Hudson. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving in the church choir, also as a past deacon and elder. Mr. Jacobs enjoyed singing in church, gardening and the outdoors. He was a skilled woodworker and built his family’s home.

Surviving are his wife, Mary B. Jacobs of Cheraw, SC, a son, William Anthony “Tony” Jacobs of Patrick, SC, daughters, Patricia “Pat” (Phillip) J. Robbins of Charlotte, NC, Mary J. “Mitzi” (Barry) Amerson of South Port, NC, grandchildren, Jacob Robbins, Seth Robbins, Leah Robbins Noe, great grandchildren, Sarah Kathryn Noe and Oliva Grace Noe.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and brothers, John B. Jacobs, Allen C. Jacobs, Ernest B. Jacobs, Robert D. Jacobs, sisters, Janie J. Parker, Ora J. Boan and Sara J. Adeiny.

A funeral service was held 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw, SC. A visitation followed the service and was held in the church parlor. A private committal service will be held after the visitation.

Mary Catherine Farnsworth Greenwell Newton

BENNETTSVILLE - Services for Mrs. Mary Catherine Farnsworth Greenwell Newton, 95, were held Friday, January 10, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Newton Cemetery at Adamsville. Visitation was held at the church. Memorials may be made to the church, PO Box 627, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Newton died Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Born in Bardstown, KY, she was a daughter of the late Jacob David and Bessie Watkins of Farnsworth. She was the former owner of the Dairy Dream and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was twice married, first to the late Harold Greenwell, then to the late Melvin Louis Newton, Sr.

Surviving are: sons, David H. Greenwell, (Lois) of Irmo; M. Louis Newton, Jr. (Patty) of Winston-Salem; and Darrell Newton, Sr. (Harriett) of Cheraw; a daughter Annie Hilliard (Kenny) of Bennettsville; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildrin; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

William 'Bill' Robert Purvis

PATRICK - William “Bill” Robert Purvis, 67, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Born in Hartsville, SC he was the son of the late Allean Purvis. He was a gold prospector and always had time to help others.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years Kathryn Rigney Purvis of Patrick, SC, a son Charles Purvis of Patrick, SC, daughters Ellen Purvis of Kannapolis, NC, Robin Purvis of Chilhowie, VA, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

The family received friends from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Bill’s Grill in Patrick, SC. A memorial service will be held during the visitation.

Jean Turnage Lisenby

PATRICK - Mrs. Jean Turnage Lisenby, age 69, died Friday, January 10, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Patrick Baptist Church, Patrick, SC. Interment will follow in the Patrick Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Saturday January 11, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home, Chesterfield, SC.

Mrs. Lisenby was born March 7, 1944 in Patrick, SC a daughter of the late Fred Wilson Turnage and Ruby Juanita Spears Turnage. She was a retired employee of the SC Forestry Commission with 30 years of service and a member of Patrick Baptist Church. Mrs. Lisenby was a charter female member of the Patrick Rescue Squad and was active for over 20 years. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Dean Lisenby, Sr.; 2 brothers, James Vernon Turnage and Fred Wayne Turnage; and 1 brother-in-law, James “Bo” Polk.

Survivors include 2 Sons: Dean Lisenby, Jr. and wife Terri of Florence, SC and Jamey Lisenby and wife Amy of Sumter, SC; 4 Grandchildren: Breanna, Tripp, Eric and Ethan Lisenby, and 1 Sister: Nancy Polk of Patrick, SC.

Cheryl Teal Lukac

MONROE, N.C. – Cheryl Teal Lukac, 35, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014. She was born in Chesterfield County, SC on September 5, 1978 daughter of Charles Eugene Teal, Jr. and Janet Lea Gathings Teal.

Cheryl was a graduate of Wingate University and was a Media Specialist and Music teacher at Petersburg Primary School and Pageland Elementary School. She was a member of Weddington United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing with the Praise Team. Cheryl loved spending time with her children at the beach and Disney World.

Cheryl is survived by her parents, Charles and Janet Gathings Teal, Cheraw, SC, her husband, Jody Raymond Lukac, her son, Justin Tucker Lukac (7), and her daughter, Abigail Grace Lukac (9), of the home and a brother, Chad Jeffrey Teal and wife, Julie of Elgin, SC, her grandmother, Dorothy H. “Granny” Teal, of Cheraw, SC, sister-in-law, Jill Sandifer, nieces and nephews, Brandon, Kaleigh, and Emaline Sandifer, and Jacob, Jaden, Hannah and Madelynn Teal.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Weddington United Methodist Church. Burial will be 3:00 PM Saturday in Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheraw, SC.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112.

Nealie Brown Polson McLain

CHESTERFIELD – Mrs. Nealie Brown Polson McLain, age 92 went home to be with her Lord, on Sunday, January 5, 2014.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was 6:00 – 8:00 Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. McLain was born November 19, 1921, in Chesterfield, SC, a daughter of the late Jessie Barney and Lela Boan Brown. She was a retired seamstress with Sacony and was a member of Forest Pine Church. Nealie enjoyed cooking and feeding her family and friends, and you were always welcome in her home and at her table. In addition to her parents, Nealie was also preceded in death by her husbands, Wilson Polson and Theodore McLain, 2 sons, Jerald W. and Billy R. Polson, 2 daughters, Bonnie P. Gibson and Peggy P. Wallace, a stepson, Ervin McLain, great grandchildren, Heather Wallace and Joshua Gibson, her brothers, Bill and Buddy Brown, and by her sisters, Faye B. Shaw and Louise B. Brock.

Survivors include Son: Wilson Barney (Linda) Polson of Chesterfield, SC; Daughter: Kathy Odessa Polson of the home; Stepson: Donald (Polly) McLain of Patrick, SC; Son-in-law: Jimmy Gibson of Chesterfield, SC; Step Daughter-in-law: Mary R. McLain of Patrick, SC; 13 Grandchildren: Ricky (Marie) Wallace, Regina (Todd) Graven, John Heath Gibson, Tommy (Lisa) Polson, Tim (Rebecca) Polson, Odessa (Stevie) Robinson, Marie Polson Tucker, Hope (Jamie) Blue, Jamie Polson, B. J. (Cody) Morton, Janet Jordan, Jerald (Tina) Polson, and Christopher (Joanna) Polson.Also 28 Great Grandchildren and 12 Great Great Grandchildren

Janice Rhoad Mixon

HARTSVILLE - Funeral services for Janice Rhoad Mixon, 72, will be held at 4:00 pm Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Troy Metzner and Rev. Patricia Warden will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Tuesday at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Mrs. Mixon died Sunday, January 5, 2014. Born in Hartsville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Doty T. Rhoad, Jr. and Catherine Meares Rhoad Stokes.
Janice Mixon led an exemplary life as a wife, mother, teacher and friend; loving those around her with everything she had to offer. Jan held numerous positions in her church, which included serving as organist and pianist. She was an active member in the Prospect Church Choir and cherished her church family. Janice had a love for flowers and the outdoors, which led her to spend many enjoyable hours working in her yard. This love was something she was able to share for many years through providing flower arrangements for her church on a weekly basis. Mrs. Mixon taught at McBee High School where she impacted many lives in and out of the classroom. She was able to share her passion for science and history for 30 years before her retirement. Upon retirement she was able to enjoy her next great role by becoming lovingly known as “Nana.”

Surviving are her husband, Herb Mixon of Hartsville, SC; sons, Mickey (Jacquelyn) Mixon of Hartsville, SC; Donnie (Renee) Freeman of Hartsville, SC; daughter, Melissa Mixon of Hartsville, SC; brother, Danny (Jenny) Rhoad of McBee, SC; brother-in-law, Darrell Johnson of McBee, SC; sisters, Ginger (Aubrey) Mixon of McBee, SC, Sandy Boykin of McBee, SC, Cathy Almond of McBee, SC; grandchildren, Mark (Ashley) Mixon, Matthew (Kristen Soltish) Mixon, Michaela Mixon, Tori Freeman; great-grandchildren, Jennavee Mixon, Kellen Mixon; and her beloved yellow lab, Lilly.
She is preceded in death by her son, Tyler Rhoad Mixon; sister, Judy Johnson; brothers, Doty T. Rhoad III, David Rhoad, Dean Rh

William P. Wallace

WALLACE - William P. Wallace, 92, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013. Born in Bennettsville he was a son of the late Sen. Paul A. and Ethlen Gardner Wallace, Sr. and the widower of Martha Jean “Mot” Wallace. He was a World War II, US Army Veteran. Mr. Wallace was a charter member of Wallace Baptist Church and attended the Fred Harris Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church, Cheraw, SC. He was a past member of the Bennettsville Rotary Club. He had served on numerous boards and committees. Mr. Wallace served as a State Senator (1958), Marlboro County Supervisor (1961-1981) and Marlboro County Council (1990-2002).

Surviving are his sons William “Billy” (Carolyn) P. Wallace, Jr. of Cheraw, SC, Sidney (Margaret) E. Wallace of Wallace, SC, daughters, Jean (David) Wallace McLean of Wallace, SC, Ann (Don) Wallace Wilson of Calhoun, GA, a brother, Paul A. Wallace, Jr. of Cheraw, SC, six grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, also, a special friend, Christine Therrell.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents listed above, also, a brother, Thomas E. Wallace and a sister, Gladys Wallace Spears.

The family will receive friends 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Friday, January 3, 2014 at the residence of David and Jean McLean, Wallace, SC. A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Wallace Baptist Church, Wallace, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Francis Everette Walters

WALLACE - Francis Everette Walters, 81, died Sunday, January 5, 2014. Born in Scotland County, NC he was a son of the late Art and Ethel Mae Williams Walters. He was a member of White’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church (40 years) and was a former deacon, becoming a honorary deacon after 6 years of service to the church. He enjoyed fishing and going to church.

Surviving are his wife Eva Mae Haire Walters of Wallace, SC, sons, William Walters of Bennettsville, SC, Carl Walters of Wallace, SC, James Truman Haire of Bennettsville, SC, Chucky Louvet of Thomasville NC, Michael Dehart of Winston Salem, NC, daughters, Sandra Gail Hall of Wallace, SC, Kathy Walters of High Point, NC, Karen Spaul of High Point, NC, Tonya Garcia of Wallace, SC, a brother, Robert Walters of Thomasville, NC, 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above and brothers, Lawrence Walters, Gurley Walters and Cecil Walters.

Daisy Teal Lewis

CHESTERFIELD - Mrs. Daisy Teal Lewis, age 86, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Friday, January 3, 2014 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lewis was born August 13, 1927 in Cheraw, SC a daughter of the late John Carlos and Margie Rebecca Rogers Teal. She was a homemaker and a member of Zoar United Methodist Church. Daisy enjoyed yard sales, cooking, and just riding around with her sisters. In addition to her parents, Daisy was also preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Lewis, her son, Perry Lewis, a brother Herbert Teal, and by 2 sisters, Ruth Lewis, and Mildred “Punk” Williams.

Survivors include Granddaughter: Lynn Lewis (Bill) McDonald of Cheraw, SC; Great Granddaughter: Avvis McDonald of Cheraw, SC; 1 Brother: John Carlos “Son” (Dorothy) Teal of Cheraw, SC; 2 Sisters: Dorothy “Dot” Johnson, her twin and Christine “Teen” (Turner) Davis both of Chesterfield, SC; Also Nieces and Nephews.

James Allen Pope Sr.

CHERAW - James Allen Pope, Sr., 69, died Saturday, December 28, 2013. He was the son of the late Glady E. Steen and Henry Pope. Mr. Pope enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a master electrician the construction industry.

Mr. Pope is survived by his sons James Allen (Ophelia) Pope, Jr. of Savannah, GA, Winston Hercules (Tabitha) Pope of High Point, NC, daughters Donna Lynn Connor of Patrick, SC, Tammy Lynn (Carl Leroy) Yates of Cheraw, SC, brothers John H. Pope of Wallace, SC, Mark D. Pope of Wilson, NC, Billy R. Pope of Wilson, NC, Joe Pope of Wilson, NC, sisters Sally B. Pope of Wilson, NC, Dean Pope of Raleigh, NC, Patricia Pope of Elizabethtown, NC., 13 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild.
