Frank Monroe Patterson Jr.

PAGELAND – Mr. Frank Monroe Patterson, Jr., 66, of Pageland, SC, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 28, 2016 while surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Frank Monroe Patterson, Jr. was born on November 27, 1949 in Fayetteville, NC to the late Frank Monroe Patterson, Sr. and Isabel Tillinghast Patterson. While attending college at Western Carolina, he met and married his wife of 45 years, Frances Bland. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where he served on various committees. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. Frank started his career in

education as a teacher in 1971. During this time, he also coached basketball and football affectionately becoming known as “Coach P”. He then became Principal of the Junior High School in Pageland and later at Central High School where he led with both accountability and compassion. Mr. Patterson advanced to the District Office as the Assistant Superintendent of Operations, retiring after 40 years in education. Frank served on local and state committees during his tenure and played a vital role in shaping the lives of children in Chesterfield County. Mr. Patterson was highly regarded as a great educator and role model, impacting and influencing his students and colleagues. Frank was also a loving husband and dedicated father, instilling in his children the value of hard work and respect for others. An invaluable asset to his community, Mr. Patterson met no stranger and was gracious to each person he encountered. Known as “Big Frank” for his large personality and presence, Frank was a staple in the Pageland community and will surely be missed.

Mr. Frank is survived by his Wife of 45 years, Frances Patterson, Sons, Frank Monroe Patterson III “Pat” (Fernanda) of Miami Beach, FL and Clint Patterson (Holly) of Fort Mill, SC and his Brother, Jack Patterson (Ann) of Greensboro, NC.

The Celebration of Frank Patterson, Jr.’s Life was held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Zion United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eight Ave. 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or Hospice of One’s Choice.

Dorothy Saxon Brewer

PAGELAND – Dorothy Saxon Brewer, 91, died on Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 3PM from the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born September 12, 1924 in Allendale, SC to the late George and Hattie Mae Saxon. Survivors: a daughter, Arthelia Brewer of Bloomfield Hills, MI; two sons, Arthur Brewer Jr. of Plainfield, NJ and Joseph Carroll Brewer of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Kristen Brewer of Plainfield, NJ; a daughter-in-law, Iris McKay of Plainfield, NJ; one brother, Moses (Jean) Saxon of Westbury, NY; two sisters, Bernice Gill of Allendale, SC and Margaret (Ravenell) Keller of Silver Spring, MD. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge. .

Minnie ‘Miss Bill’ Ratliff Gulledge
RUBY – Mrs. Minnie “Miss Bill” Ratliff Gulledge, age 89, died Monday, July 18, 2016, at the home of her daughter. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 21, 2016, at White Oak Presbyterian Church by Rev. Charlie Short and Rev. Johnny Tadlock. The burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gulledge was born January 14, 1927, in Ruby, SC, a daughter of the late James Nathaniel and Lena McNair Ratliff. She was a retired employee of INA Bearing and a lifelong member of White Oak Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Gulledge was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and good friend to everyone she met. She will surely be missed by all who knew her. Her laughter and good sense of humor were always an uplifting assurance to all. Her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law thought of her as their sister.

In addition to her parents, Miss Bill was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Beuford P. Gulledge; brothers, Dewey, Perry, Roy, Fred, Duncan, and J.D. Ratliff; and her sisters, Thelma Knight, Mary Campbell, Ruth Martin, and Clara Short.

Survivors include her son, Danny P. Gulledge and wife Peggy of Ruby, SC, 2 daughters, Judy G. Tomlinson and husband Charlie of Oak Island, NC, and Sherry G. Tadlock and husband Rev. Johnny of Pageland, SC; sister, Louise Allen of Indiana; 7 grandchildren, Charles Tomlinson, Jr. of York, SC, Steven Scott Tomlinson and wife Stephanie of Bolivia, NC, Nicolas Gulledge of Cheraw, SC; Chad Tadlock and wife Crystal, Amber Tadlock Sowell and husband Dexter both of Pageland, SC; Brandi Rivers and husband Bill, Crystal Rollins and husband Anthony both of Ruby, SC; 10 Great Grandchildren, Hunter Gulledge, Aiden Tomlinson, Maegan Tomlinson, Lauren Tomlinson, Rebekah Tadlock, Owen Tadlock, Colton Tadlock, Jalen Sowell, Harper Sowell, Garrett Rivers, Gavin Rivers, Grady Rivers, Dawson Rivers, and Abram Rollins.

Memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Gulledge to White Oak Presbyterian Church, 5386 Angelus Road, Ruby, SC 29741.

Mae Nora Miller Hough

JEFFERSON – Mae Nora Miller Hough, 89, died on Friday, July 15, 2016. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 2PM from the Hopewell United Methodist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born July 6, 1927 in Jefferson, SC to the late Everette B. Miller and Laid Williams Miller. Survivors: three sons, James Hough, Russell Detroit Hough (Debby) and David Brennion Hough, all of Jefferson, SC; twenty-six grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Ella Ree Pittman, Waxhaw, NC and Nancy Baker, Jefferson, SC. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge. .

Sammie Kay McManus

PAGELAND – Miss Sammie Kay McManus, age 69, died Tuesday, July 19, 2016. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 22, 2016 at First Freewill Baptist Church by Pastor Melvin Keziah. The burial followed in the Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday, July 21, 2016 at First Freewill Baptist Church, 209 S. Pine Street, Pageland, SC.

Miss McManus was born March 24, 1947 in Pageland, SC a daughter of the late J. Vonder and Ruby McManus. She was a former employee of Chesterfield Yarn Mill and a member of First Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed fishing and going out to eat. In addition to her parents, Sammie Kay was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Johnny McManus.

Survivors include her son, Tracy McManus of the home; sisters, Shirley (Ed) Steen of Jefferson, SC, Ann (Scott) Hargett of Tradesville, SC, Betty (Randy) Horne, Ronnie (Daisy Mae) McManus both of Pageland, SC; brother, Lewis (Peggy) McManus of Pageland, SC; 2 sisters-in-law, Catherine McManus of Pageland, SC and Wanda Aldridge of Monroe, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Elsie Miller

PAGELAND – Elsie Miller, 100, died on Tuesday, July 12, 2016. Funeral services were held on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 2PM from the Salem United Methodist Church, Pageland, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. She was born November 22, 1915 in Pageland, SC to the late William and Effie Blakeney. Survivors: five sons, Jackie Miller (Sarah), Eddie Miller, both of Manhattan, NY, Tony Miller (Mary), Indian Trail, NC, Ronald Miller, Pageland, SC and Vernon Miller (Kay), Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Janet Capehart (Walt), Valley Stream, NY; three sisters, Marcene Timmons, Charlotte, NC, Ernestine Gantt, Columbia, SC and Peggy Ann Blakeney, Manhattan, NY; eighteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge. .

Albert Lee Nicholson

INDIAN LAND – Min. Albert Lee Nicholson, 50, died on Saturday July 16, 2016. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 3Pm from the Zion Hill Christian Fellowship Church, Monroe, NC. Burial followed in the Rocky Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Lancaster, SC. He was born August 10, 1965 in Charlotte, NC to the late Reverend Harden and Hallie B. Marshall. Survivors: two daughters, Heather Causey (Kennisha), Duluth, GA and Kristen Palk, Rock Hill, SC; a son, Albert Perry, Charlotte, NC; six brothers, Jason Bennett (Shelia), Charlotte, NC, Hue Jean Marshall (Aleigh), Lancaster, SC, Henry Nicholson (Teresa), Rock Hill, SC, Rev. Roach Sowell

JEFFERSON – Roach Sowell, 90, died on Tuesday, July 19, 2016. Funeral services were held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 3pm from the Sandy Run Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born September 10, 1925 in Jefferson, SC to the late Bill and Lona Newman Sowell. Survivors: three daughters, Patricia Gordon (Bernard), Chesterfield, SC, Betty Miller (Bobby), Jefferson, SC and Shirley Raley (Joe), Jefferson, SC; two brothers, Freddy Sowell and Calhoun Sowell; two sisters, Margie Miller and Mary Ponds; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren. Flemming Funerals-Pageland was in charge.

Brenda Gail Steen

PATRICK – Mrs. Brenda Gail Steen, age 49, died Thursday, July 14, 2016 at her home. The family received friends on Saturday afternoon from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Mrs. Steen was born October 6, 1966 in Lancaster, SC a daughter of Sarah Bernice Boan and the late Jimmie Nelson Hill. She was a former employee of Care South Carolina. Mrs. Steen enjoyed cross stitching and crocheting, and her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Randy H. Steen of the home; 1 daughter, Melissa L. Griggs and husband Robert of Piedmont, SC; 2 grandchildren, Sarah and Callie Griggs; her mother, Sarah Bernice Boan; 2 brothers, Timmy Hill and wife Motsy of Chesterfield, SC and Jimmy Hill of Cassatt, SC; and 1 sister, Connie Southard of VA.

The family requests memorials be made in Brenda’s memory to Hospice of Chesterfield County, P.O. Box 293, Chesterfield, SC 29709

Larry Wayne Heustess

CHERAW - Larry Wayne Heustess, 64, died, Sunday, January 1, 2017. Born in Hartsville, SC he was a son of Helen M. Threadgill of Patrick, SC and the late Andrew Heustess. He was an avid Clemson Tiger Fan. He enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR racing.

Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Butler Heustess of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Kelli (Cam) Heustess Beck of Cheraw, SC, Abbi (Billy) Heustess Gibbs of Florence, SC, his mother listed above, a brother, Ronnie (Lisa) Threadgill of Patrick, SC, sisters, Gail Heustess of Cheraw, SC, Susan (Charles) Tipton of Cheraw, SC, grandchildren, Emily Beck, Andy Beck and Ryder Gibbs.

The family will receive friends 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Kiser Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at a later time.

Jay Rone Cassidy

CHERAW - Jay Rone Cassidy, 77, died, Saturday, December 31, 2016. Born in Chesterfield, SC, he was a son of the late Warren and Rosa Mae Tarlton Cassidy. He was a US Army Veteran.

Surviving are his sons, Mike Cassidy of Indian Trail, NC, Johnny Cassidy of Cheraw, SC, Ronnie Cassidy of Ruby, SC, David Cassidy of Ruby, SC, a daughter, Geneva Cassidy of Columbia, SC, a brother, Allen Cassidy of Chesterfield, SC and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Michael ‘Mike’ Ballard Coates Sr.

BENNETTSVILLE - Mr. Michael “Mike” Ballard Coates, Sr., age 69, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at his residence after an illness.

Born in Chesterfield, SC, on July 4, 1947, he was the son of the late Douglas and Juanita Ballard Coates and son of the late Josephine Coates. He was a United States NAVY veteran having served during the Vietnam War, and served as a faithful member of Christian Fellowship Church. He was the former owner and operator of Cheraw Sash Indoor Lumber Company, and formerly served on the S.C. State Highway Patrol assigned in York County, SC. He served as the Health Safety & Environmental Manager (HSE). He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved playing golf with his friends, and enjoyed time spent with his family especially at Christmas.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Wanda Pope Coates of their home in Bennettsville; sons, Michael B. Coates, Jr. and wife Janet of Bennettsville and Bryan L. Coates of Bennettsville; a sister, Janes Gates Pelfrey of Cheraw; 2 grandchildren, Kelton Michael Coates and Brandon Michael Feinberg; one great-granddaughter, Bailey Sky; sister-in-law, Lynn Coates and by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relative and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Christian Fellowship Church officiated by Pastor Julius Bunch. Burial, directed by Burroughs & Cooper Funeral Home, followed at Sunset Memorial Park. The family greeted friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the funeral home.

Mr. Coates was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother listed above; by two brothers, Glynn and Frankie Coates; and by a brother-in-law, Earl Pelfrey.

Memorials are suggested to: Christian Fellowship Church, 1615 Hwy. 38 S. Bennettsville, SC 29512.

John David Gunsallus

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - John David Gunsallus, 59, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at his home in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
The graveside memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge, Ga., with Rev. Mike Brown officiating.
David was born October 29, 1957 in Albany, GA. He graduated from Darton College and received his Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist degree from Erlanger Medical Center. He was an anesthetist for the hospital in Cheraw, SC.
Survivors include his parents, Glenn and Ann Durham Gunsallus of Bainbridge, GA; his daughters, Megan Gunsallus Jandy and her husband, Marc, of Longwood, FL and Lindsey Gunsallus of Los Angeles, CA; his sister, Susan Gunsallus Davis and her husband, Dr. W. Gerald Davis, of Hendersonville, TN; his nieces, Grace Davis Mercer and her husband, Stephen, of Smyrna, GA and Rose Davis Garner, and her husband, Thomas, of Vestavia Hills, AL; and his nephew, William Tyler Davis of Hendersonville, TN.

Carolyn C. Kelley

FLORENCE - Carolyn C. Kelley, 79, died Tuesday, December, 27, 2016. Born in Cheraw, SC, she was a daughter of the late Courtney G. and Bertie Chapman. She attended church at the Florence Baptist Temple. She enjoyed being with her friends and most of all, loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by a son Michael Noel (Cindy) of Cheraw, SC, granddaughters, Mica Noel Dowdy of Bennettsville, SC, Jade Noel Johnson of New Bern, NC, a grandson Todd Hopkins of Montana, and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, sons Richard Noel and Douglas Noel, and brothers Courtney Guy Chapman and Frank Chapman.

The family received friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, SC.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, SC.

James C. ‘Jimmy’” Lisenby

PATRICK - Mr. James C. “Jimmy” Lisenby, age 67, entered into rest on Friday, December 23, 2016. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Monday, December 26, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ricky Cox and Rev. Chad Watson with burial following in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. The family greeted friends from 12:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of Bill and Rhonda Stokes.
Mr. Lisenby was born April 28, 1949 in Cheraw, SC a son of Annie “Dora” Goude Lisenby and the late Fred Lisenby. He was a retired employee of INA Bearing and a faithful member of Pine View Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher. Jimmy enjoyed gardening and was a true family man. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family and he will be remembered for his unconditional love toward his grandchildren.
In addition to his father, Jimmy was also preceded in death by his brother, John Robert Lisenby.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Dianne Q. Lisenby of the home; 2 sons, William B. “Bill” (Rhonda) Stokes of Chesterfield, SC, and John E. (Christy) Stokes of Winnsboro, SC; mother, Annie “Dora” Goude Lisenby of Cheraw, SC; grandchildren, Bo Stokes, Christian Stokes, Johnathan Stokes, Madison Stokes, Sydney Stokes, Harley Stokes, and Jansen Stokes; 2 sisters, Linda (Butch) Chelluk of Lugoff, SC, and Cheryl (Lafon) Grice of Gibson, NC.

Deanna Catoe Mills

PAGELAND - Mrs. Deanna Catoe Mills, age 43, entered into rest on Thursday, December 29, 2016. Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Providence Baptist Church by Dr. Roger Wall with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 3:00 – 4:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
Mrs. Mills was born June 16, 1973 in Cheraw, SC a daughter of the late Bill and Ruby Lee Rollins Catoe. She was a graduate of Central High School class of 1991 and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was employed with Aviagen of Pageland as an Office Manager with 20 years of service. Her life’s joy was spending time with her family, especially on family vacations. Deanna was a proud mom and enjoyed supporting Brooke in the Central High School Marching Band.
Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Michael Mills of the home; daughter, Brooke Mills of the home; brother, Bob Catoe of Pageland, SC; sister, Joan (Scott) Austin of Jefferson, SC; also numerous nieces and nephews.
The family cordially requests that memorials be made in Deanna’s memory to Providence Baptist Church “Youth Group, ” 232 Providence Church Road, Providence Church Rd, Pageland, SC 29728.
