Steven Earl Moss

CHERAW - Steven Earl Moss, 60, died Tuesday, December 27, 2016. Born in Gastonia, NC, he was a son of Carol Ann Moss and the late Earl Glenn Moss. Steven enjoyed riding and working on motorcycles, as well as cars. He enjoyed playing pool in his spare time, and most of all he loved being around his family.

He is survived by a son, Steven C. Moss of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Tammy Hicks of Charleston, SC, Summer Hinson of Pikeville, NC, and Candi Moss, his mother listed above, and a sister, Cathy Clark of Leesville, SC.

He was preceded in death by his father listed above.

There will be a private family service on a later date.

Mills D. Scoggins
BENNETTSVILLE - Mr. Mills D. Scoggins, age 68, entered into rest on Thursday, December 29, 2016. A Celebration of Life service was held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home (318 E. Main St. Chesterfield, SC, 29709). The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Scoggins was born April 14, 1948 in Rutherfordton, NC, a son of the late Dward and Irene Dixon Scoggins. He was a retired Staff Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force where he served in the Vietnam War on a Pararescue Team. Following his military career, Mr. Scoggins received his Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina, and went on to work with the City of Cayce’s Police Department where he retired as Assistant Chief. After his initial retirement, Mills accepted the position as Chief of Police at Columbia College. He later worked with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department serving as a Training Sergeant and was also an investigator with LLR on the Nursing and Medical Board.
Mills and his wife, Mib, enjoyed traveling and lived in Australia for 2 years, where he enjoyed “true” retired life. After their short time there, Mills was ready to return to South Carolina and enjoy farm life. He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed farming, raising cows, rescuing miniature horses, and taking care of his beloved dogs on the farm. A Harley Davidson enthusiast, his hobbies included motorcycle riding and recreational shooting. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Bennettsville.
Survivors include his wife, Meriba “Mib” Scoggins of the home; son, Dixon (Lauren) Scoggins of Simpsonville, SC; granddaughter, Ellery Scoggins of Simpsonville, SC; brother, Robert (Mary) Scoggins of Palm Coast, FL; Niece, Danielle Scoggins; Nephew, Robert Scoggins, Jr.; and great niece, Keva Scoggins.

Rosa Lee Hubbard Shaw

WALLACE - Rosa Lee Hubbard Shaw, 84, died Thursday, December 29, 2016. Born in Marlboro County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Ethel and Sam Hubbard, Jr. She was the widow of James Edward Shaw. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shaw enjoyed seeing everyone smile and making them laugh. She loved sitting on her front porch to pass the time. Mrs. Shaw was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by daughters Wanda McCune of Wallace, SC, Ann Morris of Chesterfield, SC, Nancy Knight of Cheraw, SC, Barbara Gene Ammons of Surfside Beach, SC, a brother Allan Hubbard, David Hubbard and Sammy Hubbard all of Rock Hill, SC, a sister Annie Hartzell of Rock Hill, SC, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above, brothers, Jesse Hubbard and Robert Hubbard, and a sister Joyce Hubbard.

The family received friends from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM, Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home.

A funeral was held at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home. Burial followed at New Hope United Methodist Church in Wallace, SC.

Charles J. Davis

RUBY - Mr. Charles J. Davis, age 74, entered into rest on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at his home. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Bobby Morton and Phillip Caulder Jr, with burial following in the White Oak Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Davis was born June 9, 1942 in Jefferson, SC a son of Grace Oliver Dees and the late James Davis. He was a retired supervisor with the SC Dept. of Transportation and a former member of the South Carolina National Guard. Charles enjoyed auto mechanics and watching old westerns. He was a member of the WOW Lodge 516, a member of Clanton Plains Baptist Church, and enjoyed going to see his grandchildren in special programs at Lower Macedonia Baptist Church. In addition to his father, Charles was also preceded in death by a brother Ricky Davis and by a sister Linda Penman.
Survivors include his wife of almost 44 years, Loretta Douglas Davis of the home; 2 Sons; Chris (Jennifer) Davis of Cheraw, SC and Dale (Becky) Davis of Chesterfield, SC; 4 Grandchildren; Mason, Hunter, Jared, and Aubreigh Davis; Mother; Grace O. Dees of Ruby SC; 1 Brother; Jimmy (Sadie) Davis of Cheraw SC; and 1 Sister; Alta Kay Newberger of Ruby SC

Margorie Rivers Osborn

MT. PLEASANT - Margorie Rivers Osborn entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Margorie was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina on July 1, 1920, the daughter of the late Henry Maxcy Rivers and Pauline Wadsworth Rivers, and a descendant of William Massey and Charles Evans. She attended schools in Ruby, Pageland, and Mt. Croghan, graduating from Mt. Croghan High School as Salutatorian in 1937. After working for the Clerk of Court in Chesterfield County for several years, she married Allen Donald Brock in 1940 at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Chesterfield. While her husband served in the US Army, Margorie worked as Assistant Supervisor of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, US Navy in Washington, DC. After World War II, she and Allen moved to Cheraw, where they owned and operated several restaurants.

After 17 years of marriage, Allen passed away in 1958. Margorie married Milton C. Evans in 1965. They enjoyed over 22 years together in Cheraw and at the Presbyterian Home in Summerville, SC, where he passed away in 1988. In 1994, Margorie married a neighboring widower, Radm. James Butler Osborn, and they had ten wonderful years of companionship prior to his death in 2004.

A longtime member of the Civic League Garden Club in Cheraw, Margorie was also devoted to her work in the First Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Catechism for many years. Margorie enjoyed various activities with the Women of the Church including attending her Circle, Presbytery and Synod meetings.

Margorie’s hobbies included baking, gardening, historical novels, traveling, embroidery and needlework. However, her most enjoyable pastime outside of church and family was “wetting a line” at every opportunity, whether it was fishing around the Pee Dee, trolling the lakes of the Carolinas or “coaching” Milton on deep sea excursions.

She is survived by a son, Allen Donald Evans (Tenley) of Charleston, three grandchildren, Henslee Rutledge Elliott (Van), Milton Coakey Evans and John Alden Rivers Evans (Sarah), and their mother, Lydia Lloyd Evans. Margorie is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Margorie Anne Winifred Evans and Beatrice Mary Rivers Evans of Charleston.

A graveside service was held at 11:30 am, Tuesday, December 20, 2016 in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens, Cheraw, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Carol Purvis

SOCIETY HILL- Carol Chapman Purvis, age 54, died Saturday, December 17, 2016 at her home. A funeral service was held at Welsh Neck Baptist Church at 4:00 on Tuesday, December 20, with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born in Bennettsville on January 15, 1962 she is the daughter of the late Ronald and Grace Driggers Chapman. Carol was an LPN and had worked for Dr. Moyd at CARESOUTH in Society Hill and also worked many years at Morrell Nursing home. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially this time of year, with Christmas being her favorite holiday.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Bobby Purvis, two sons, Jason (Kacee) Purvis of Hartsville and Joe Purvis of the home, grandchildren: Wyatt and Leah Purvis; two sisters, Debra (Roger) Oxendine of Society Hill and Rhonda (Theo) Lindsey of Cheraw, also, her canine companion, Roxy.

Carol was taken home for a time of visitation from 5:00 PM until on Monday, December 19. The family address is 6186 Society Hill Road, Society Hill, SC 29593.

JoAnn A. Roscoe

CHERAW - Mrs. JoAnn A. Roscoe, age 69, entered into rest on Monday, December 19, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral Services were held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Forest Pine Church by Pastor Danny Malloy with burial following in the church cemetery. The family greeted friends from 3:00 – 4:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Roscoe was born January 9, 1947 in Aiken, SC a daughter of the late Josephine Williams. She was a homemaker and member of Forest Pine Church. Mrs. Roscoe enjoyed working in her flowers and cooking.

In addition to her mother, JoAnn was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Earl Atkinson; 1 sister, Shrildia Grey; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Proctor.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Roscoe of the home; children, James White, Jr. of Cheraw, SC and Bobby Roscoe, Jr. of Manning, SC, Denise (Mark) Beard of Wagener, SC, Bonnie (Johnny) Gainey, and Tonya (Timmy) Childers both of Cheraw, SC; daughter of the heart, Serenity Hall of the home; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Coleen) Atkinson of Langley, SC, Wade (Marlene) Atkinson of Wagener, SC, and Edward Atkinson; sisters, Shirley Proctor of Gloverville, SC, Mary (Curtis) Fordham of Alabama; brother-in-law, James Grey of Blackville, SC, sister-in-law, Carol Atkinson of Wagener, SC.

Martha Rivers Sellers

CHESTERFIELD - Martha Rivers Sellers, 89, died on Friday, December 16, 2016. Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 2pm from the Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Chesterfield, SC. Burial followed in the Chesterfield Community Cemetery, Chesterfield, SC. She was born to late David and Lottie Myers Rivers on April 8, 1927 in Chesterfield, SC. Survivors: a niece: Geraldine B. Murvin; great nieces and nephews, Miranda L. Murvin, Lonnie L. Murvin, Jr., Thomas T. Burch, Ronald E. Murvin (Marissa), Daniel Burch, Nathaniel W. Burch, Jonathan Murvin, Rasheeda Rivers, Quanya Rivers, Kia Rivers, Hakeem Rivers and eight great great nieces and nephews. Services were rendered by Flemming Funerals-Chesterfield. .

Pauline Quick Smith

FLORENCE - Pauline Quick Smith, 88, died, Tuesday, December 20, 2016. Born in Bennettsville, SC she was a daughter of the late William Shuford Quick, Sr. and Dessie Chavis Quick. She was the widow of William Smith. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Bennettsville, SC. She enjoyed watching TV (Atlanta Braves), puzzle books, cleaning and ironing.

Surviving is her son, Gary (Melinda) Smith of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Connie (Donald) Odom of Florence, SC, Ann McLean of Bennettsville, SC, sisters, Ester Mae Quick and Irene (Skip) Wallace of Bennettsville, SC, grandchildren, Missy Schoen, Brent Smith, Mike Teal, Brad Odom, Blake Odom, Teresa McLean, Darrin McLean, great grandchildren, Briana Schoen, Brynlen Smith, Berkleigh Smith, Sabrina Teal, Bridget Teal, Makenzie Odom, Jacob McLean, Katie McLean and Lillie Felter.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents listed above, also, brothers, Weldon Quick, Troy Quick, W.S. Quick, Andrew Quick, Frank Quick, Tilden Quick, Donnie Lee Quick, Carrol “Coochie” Quick and Joe Hayes Quick.

The family received friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Friday, December 23, 2016 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Bennettsville, SC.

A funeral service was held at 3:00 PM, Friday, December 23, 2016 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Bennettsville, SC.

James Ellis Burch Jr.

CHESTERFIELD - Mr. James Ellis Burch, Jr. age 61, entered into rest on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from the chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home by Pastor Fred McDaniel and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial following in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Burch was born April 30, 1955 in Chesterfield, SC a son of Peggy P. Burch and the late James Ellis Burch, Sr. He was a retired employee of INA Bearing and enjoyed doing yard work. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family and dogs, and watching Skylar play basketball.

In addition to his father, Ellis was also reunited with his daughter, Jennifer Brooke Burch.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Barbara H. Burch of the home; daughter, Skylar Nicole Burch, whom he referred to as “The apple of my eye”; mother, Peggy P. Burch of Chesterfield; brothers, Allen (Mary) Burch, Timmy (Lori) Burch, and Charles Burch all of Chesterfield, SC; Sister of the heart, Mary Gaskins of Cheraw, SC; special friend, Lisa Zahler of Chesterfield, SC; and his beloved pet, “Sophia.”

The family would like to express their gratitude to nurse Kaydra McCoy and the entire staff of Hospice of Chesterfield County for the love and care shown to Mr. Burch during his illness.

JEFFERSON - Mrs. Kathy Kearns, age 66, entered into rest on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. The family will host a private memorial service at a later date.

Mrs. Kearns was born February 20, 1950 in Monroe, NC a daughter of the late Julious and Genna Davidson Helms. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Mrs. Kearns had a love for everyone and was very nurturing, supportive, and attentive to her family. She will be fondly remembered as a doting mother who was proud of her sons, daughters-in-law, and entire family. Her favorite pastime was taking care of her grandson, Kade.

In addition to her parents, Kathy was also preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Helms.

Survivors include her best friend and significant other, Jerry Melton of the home; 2 sons, Derrick Kearns of Washington, D.C., and Shane (Marsha) Kearns of Mt. Croghan, SC; step-sons, Lane (Myra) Melton of McBee, SC and Lee (Christina) Melton of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Kade Kearns, Cale Nicholson, and Kaitlyn Nicholson; 1 sister, Linda Deese of Pageland, SC; step-grandchildren, Clifton (Desiree) Melton of N. Augusta, SC, Samantha Melton of Columbia, SC; Diana (Michael) Martin of Irmo, SC, and Carrie Melton of Columbia, SC; 1 step-great grandchild, Jace Martin.

CHERAW - Amanda Paige Rogers, 24, died Friday, December 16, 2016. Born in Florence, SC, she was a daughter of Earline Perdue Rogers of Cheraw, SC and the late Steve Rogers. Paige loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her mother listed above, sisters, Ashley Gaskins (Dustin) of Cheraw, SC, Heather Rogers of Cheraw, SC, maternal grandfather, John M. Perdue of Patrick, SC, aunts and uncles, Kim and Steve Hicks of Patrick, SC, Buddy and Barbara Rogers of Summerville, SC, nephews, Steven Rogers, and Aiden Rogers, cousins, McKinley Hicks, Preston Hicks, Kathy Rogers, and Denise Rogers.
She was preceded in death by her father listed above, maternal grandmother, Mary C. Perdue, and paternal grandmother, Audrey P. Rogers.
The family received friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Sunday, December 18, 2016 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.

Margie W. ‘Gee’ Burch

MT. CROGHAN – Mrs. Margie W. “Gee” Burch, age 83, entered into rest on Monday, December 5, 2016 at her home. Funeral Services were held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Mt. Croghan United Methodist Church by Rev. Stewart Kidd and Phillip Caulder, Jr. with burial following in the Mt. Croghan Memorial Park. The family greeted friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Wednesday, prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Burch was born September 4, 1933 in Mt. Croghan, SC a daughter of the late Jessie and Addie Leigh Hancock Watts. She was a graduate and Valedictorian of Mt. Croghan High School Class of 1953 and was also a member of the girls basketball state championship team. She had 30 years of service with Chesterfield County School District. She was a loving caregiver to many people throughout the years, and her love was not limited to just people but to animals also. She had a special place in her heart for stray and unwanted cats. She enjoyed working in her garden and growing flowers. She will be remembered for her love of family and was affectionately known as “Gee” and “Mama Burch” to her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Margie was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Charles Louis “Charlie” Burch, Sr.; and brother, Charles Watts.
Survivors include her daughter, Dell (Ronnie) Chapman; son, Chuck (Jan) Burch both of Mt. Croghan, SC; grandchildren, Charles (Heather) Chapman of Mt. Croghan, SC, Jessica (Steve Sellers) Sims of Patrick, SC, Jennifer Burch of Mt. Croghan, SC, Janna (Adam) Jordan of Ruby, SC; great grandchildren, Jayden Sims, Kayleigh Sims, Luke Jordan, and Mason Burch; sisters-in-law, Nancy Burch Mangum and Jane Burch both of Pageland, SC, and Lynn Burch of Cumming, GA; numerous nieces and nephews including special nephew, Bill Sikes of Mt. Croghan, SC; also loving caregiver, Bernice Poston.
