Harry H. Comer
Formerly employed with Cone Mills

Harry Henton Comer, 64, husband of Laura Mae Eaves Comer, of 147 Mt. Tabor Church Road, died Jan. 8, 2003, at 5:12 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Comer was born in Union County on Jan. 5, 1919, a son of the late Claude and Nannie Gault Comer.

He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mr. Comer was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed with Cone Mills Carlisle Plant and the Smyrna Plant of Sharon.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Jennie C. and Tony Peay of Buffalo; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny K. and Julie Comer of Union; two sisters, Dorothy Farr and Mozelle McGrady both of Union; six grandchildren, Marty Reardon, Michelle Brock, Peggy Gault, Lori McCollum, Josh Comer and Amy Comer; and two great-grandchildren, Corey Brock and Paige Brock.

The family is at the home of his son, Danny K. Comer, 135 Mt. Tabor Church Road. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday night from 7 until 9. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Eddie Gist
Union native

Eddie Gist, formerly of 107 Cogdill Plaza, died Jan. 8, 2003 in Spartanburg. The family is at the home of her brother, at 225 Vaughan Road in the Jonesville community. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Union Community Funeral Home.

Frank L. Norman
Union County native

Frank L. Norman, 57, of 144 Hilltop Road, Cross Keys, died Jan. 4, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Born in Union County on April 10, 1945, he was a son of the late Clara Mae Norman. Mr. Norman attended Union County Schools.

He is survived by four sisters, Barbara Edwards of White Plains, N.Y.; Betty Norman of Cross Keys, Lucinda Robertson of Philadelphia, Pa. and Sarah Norman of the home; seven brothers, Danny Norman of Union, Bennie Norman of Woodruff, Tony Norman of Santuc, Raymond Norman of the home, Joe Jones of Cross Anchor, and Lumas George and Willie Robertson of Laurens; and an aunt, Doll Norman of Woodruff.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church conducted by the Rev. Lare Weeks and Rev. Donnie Rice. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday and on Friday from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred L. Pharr
Former Union resident

BUFORD, Ga. Mildred Louise Pharr, 85, of Buford, Ga., former resident of Union, died Jan. 7, 2003, after a brief illness. Miss Pharr was a native of Mecklenburg County, a daughter of the late Samuel and May Pharr. She was retired from Western Electric.

Surviving are her sister, Kitty Dahlberg of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in Rosemont Cemetery in Union. Tapp Funeral Home of Buford, Ga. has charge of arrangements. Announcement courtesy of the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Rev. W. Larry Crocker

The Rev. William Larry Crocker, 71, of 303 North Mountain St., Union, husband of Helen Dill Crocker, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 12:46 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Eulalee L. Gowan
Retired from Her Majesty

Eulalee Lamb Gowan, 87, resident of Oakmont Nursing Home, widow of Herbert Smith Gowan, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 6:50 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after several years of declining health. Mrs. Gowan was born in West Springs on Aug. 30, 1916, a daughter of the late Russell and Lillie Bright Lancaster Lamb. She was a long-time member of Bogansville United Methodist Church.

She was a former member and served as president of the Buffalo Garden Club and was a member of the Union Lioness Club. Mrs. Gowan was a graduate of West Springs High School and was retired from Her Majesty. She was formerly employed with I. From & Son and Graham's Flowers.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janet G. and Tommy Sherbert of Union; a granddaughter, Kristi and her husband Fox Crater of Gaffney; a grandson, Timothy and his wife Kristen Sherbert of Union; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Lynn Sherbert, T.J. Sherbert and Katie Leigh Sherbert; a sister, Gladys L. Kingsmore of Buffalo; and a very special niece, Sonja Lindholm.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Gary Peterson. The family is at home of her daughter, Janet and Tommy Sherbert, 405 Brookside Drive, Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oakmont Nursing Home Activity Fund, 709 Rice Ave., Ext., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Raymond L. Robinson
Retired from Cone Mills

Raymond L. (Buddy) Robinson, 77, husband of Faye Stalsworth Robinson of 2251 Lockhart Hwy, Union, died at his residence Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at 12:30 a.m. Mr. Robinson was born in Union on March 18, 1926, a son of the late Ester Robinson Sr. and Cora Boulware Robinson. he was a member of Philippi Baptist Church, a former deacon and superintendent of the Sunday School and was a former member of the Union County Male Chorus and a member of the Union Elks Lodge #1321.

Mr. Robinson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from Cone Mill, Carlisle Finishing Plant. Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and John Connell of Clemson, Cathy Robinson of Union, Melanie and Bo Rabb of Union; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kathy Robinson of Union; five sisters, Lucille Grant of Lexington, Ruby Cudd of Mt. Pleasant, Sara Rice of Greenville, Vivian Adams and Mattie Turner, both of Union; two brothers, Eddie Robinson and Olin Robinson, both of Union; five grandchildren, Katie Connell, John Connell, Laura Connell, Reah Robinson and Raven Robinson; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Jesse Bentley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 2251 Lockhart Highway, Union. Memorials may be made to the Philippi Baptist Church Building Fund, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lillian B. Rutherford
Union County native

WHITMIRE Lillian Bernice Rutherford of 107 Byrd Street, Whitmire, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia after a brief illness. Lillian, better known as Aunt B, was born in Union County, a daughter of the late James and Carean Hunter. She was predeceased by three brothers, Allen, Mack and Hubert Hunter.

Surviving are two sisters, Lunette (late Levi) Boyd of Whitmire and Paralee (Clarence) Jeter of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Robert (Betty) Hunter of Whitmire and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew A.M.E. Zion Church in Whitmire. The family will receive friends at her home, 107 Byrd St., Whitmire.

Visitation will be Thursday from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Hunter Funeral Home. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rosaline Jean Fairey Brown
Retired school teacher

GREENVILLE Services for Rosaline Jean Fairey Brown, 80, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, Saluda, with burial to follow in Mt of Olives Cemetery, Johnston, beside the graves of her parents and sister. The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 pm prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Pine Pleasant Baptist Church, 457 Pine Pleasant Church Road, Saluda, S.C. 29138. Bland Funeral Home of Johnston in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Brown, a native of Johnston, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at her residence, 1306 Pelham Road, Greenville.

She was born on March 19, 1923, a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. T.K. Fairey. Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Winthrop College and retired from more than two decades as an elementary school teacher, completing her career at Johnston Primary School. She was member of Berea First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Jonathan C. Brown, Jr., retired U.S. Navy Chaplain and Baptist pastor; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan (III) and Nancy Brown; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Janice Brown; and four grandsons, Stephen, Daniel, David and Jonathan. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Elizabeth Fairey Hastings of Columbia.

William A. Carter
World War II veteran

CHESTER William A. (Bill) Carter, 77, husband of Lillie Porter Carter of 3521 Pinckney Road, Chester, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 4:45 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Carter was born in Union on April 30, 1926, a son of the late Butler Wood Carter and Stella Bentley Carter. He was a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and the Lockhart Masonic Lodge. Mr. Carter was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Cone Mills Corp., Carlisle Finishing Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Jean Carter of Lockhart; three sisters, Roberta Deal and Minnie Ruth Taylor, both of Union and Peggy Crocker of Hartsville; three grandchildren, Robin and Kevin Black of Fredericksburg, Va., Todd and Kaye Carter and Heather and Jason Colson, all of Union; three great-grandchildren, Robbie Black, Jessica Black and Jacob Colson; two step-great-grandchildren, Wendy Duncan and Jamie Duncan and two step-great-great-grandchldren, Bret Gruver and Elizabeth Johnson.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Chester County conducted by the Rev. Larry Parsons, the Rev. Joe Brown and the Rev. Ben Hill. The family will be at their respective homes. Visitation will be at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery Association, c/o MT. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 4619 Mt. Pleasant Church Road, Chester, S.C. 29706. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rev. Larry Crocker
Presbyterian minister

The Rev. William Larry Crocker, 71, husband of Helen Dill Crocker of 303 North Mountain St., Union, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 12:46 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Rev. Crocker was born in Union on Dec. 23, 1931, a son of the late Raymond H. Crocker Sr. and Ola Nichols Crocker.

He was a graduate of Union High School, Presbyterian College and the Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga. He served as pastor of the Cane Creek Presbyterian Church for the past 10 years. He had previously pastored Hodges Presbyterian Church, Barnwell Presbyterian Church, Harbor View Presbyterian Church in Charleston, First Presbyterian Church of York, Morningside Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Ga. and Peterson Presbyterian Church in Columbia.

Surviving in addition to his wife of over 50 years are a daughter, Penny Wasmund of Wilmington, N.C.; two sons, William Larry Crocker Jr. of Rock Hill and Peter Benson Crocker of Charlotte; two sisters, Nancy O'Dell of Union and Judy Aman of Spartanburg; three brothers, Sonny Crocker of Union, Nick Crocker of Johnston and Don Crocker of Fort Payne, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Shelly Crocker, Mikki Crocker, Amy Crocker, Paul Wasmund, Peggy Wasmund, Patrick Crocker, Kevin Wheeler and Andrew Wheeler.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Thomas W. Horton and the Rev. Robert E. Pettit. Burial will be in the Cane Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The following will serve as active pallbearers: Monty Crocker, Jerry Crocker, Max Crocker, David Crocker, Claude Schlagenhauf, Mark Schlagenhauf, Tyler Crocker and Mark Dill.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 11:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: present and past elders of Cane Creek Presbyterian Church. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. Memorials made be made to the Cane Creek Presbyterian Church, 120 Cane Creek Rd., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dorothy C. Gault
Former secretary

SPARTANBURG Dorothy Virginia Coleman Gault, 76, of 208 Talmadge Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at White Oak Estates. She was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Melvin William and Margaret Ann Gorman Coleman and was the wife of Harold Richard Gault Sr. of the home. A graduate of Robinson's Business College, she was a former secretary for Johnson and Johnson Insurance Agency in Greenville, Commercial Credit, and Mary Black Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class, the Garden and Literature Club of Spartanburg, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Hames Chapter, Jonesville.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Deborah Dianne Gault of Spartanburg and Pamela Gault Buchanan and her husband, Jack W. Buchanan Jr., of Boiling Springs, N.C.; a son, Harold Richard Gault Jr. and his wife, Judith Burton Gault of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four grandsons, Jeffrey Coleman Mason and Crosby David Mason of Spartanburg, Justin Walker Buchanan of Boiling Springs, N.C., and Samuel Walker Gault of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Olivia Ruth Gault of Chattanooga and a sister, Margaret Marie Coleman Gault of Jonesville.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 today at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Union. Honorary escort will be members of the Ruth Sunday School Class and the Royal Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Morningside Baptist Church Building Fund, 897 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

James D. Hope
Union native

SAVANNAH, Ga. James Davis Hope, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Candler Hospital. He was a native of Union and was the son of the late Dr. W.H. Hope and Mrs. Lucie S. Hope of Union. He had lived in Savannah since 1949 and retired from Morgan's Inc. in 1976 where he served as vice president and treasurer. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Landrum Lodge No. 48, F&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and the Greater Unit of Alee Shrine Temple.

Mr. Hope is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary McWhirter Hope, a daughter, Gaye Sullivan of Brunswick, Ga., three grandchildren, Kevin Sullivan, Mark Sullivan and Laura Thomas; six great grandchildren; a sister, Lucile Smith of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a private memorial service with burial in Union.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Shriner's Burn and Crippled Children Hospital, c/o Alee Temple, P.O. Box 14147, Savannah, Ga., 31417 or your favorite charity. Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home of Savannah has charge of arrangements.
