James Edward Nash
USC graduate

James Edward (Eddie) Nash, 51, husband of Vicki Happerfield Nash of 225 Fairwood Boulevard, died Jan. 3, 2003 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Nash was born in Union on Oct. 8, 1951, a son of the late William Perry Nash Sr. and Ruth Foster Nash.

He was retired from Milliken & Company and was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church. Mr. Nash was a Mason and a member of the Union Elks Lodge. He was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1969 and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Heather Nicole Nash and Haley Denise Nash, both of the home; two sisters, Susan Nash Comer and Debbie Nash Shaw, both of Mt. Pleasant; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Nash was predeceased by two brothers, William Perry Nash Jr. and Thomas Ray Nash.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Fairforest Baptist Church by the Rev. Aulbrey Calvert. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Buddy McCart, Wynn Steadman, Ron Land, Don Davis, Steve Ward, Terry English and Barry Tweed.

Members of the Union Elks Lodge are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 p.m. today to form the honorary escort. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to Fairforest Baptist Church, 1917 Jonesville Highway, Union, 29379. The family is at the home 225 Fairwood Boulevard, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Earl J. Valentine
Retired from United Merchants

Earl J. Valentine, 79, husband of Alice Lancaster Valentine of 111 Teal Road, died Jan. 3, 2003 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Valentine was born in Clifton on Dec. 9, 1923, a son of the late Kelly and Bertie Lawson Valentine.

He was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. He was a volunteer firefighter with the City of Union Fire Department for 35 years. He also played baseball for many years with the Eastern Carolina Textile League.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Robert Williams of Lyman; two sons and daughters-in-law: Lanny and Cathie Valentine of Graniteville and Neil and Jane Valentine of Union; three sisters, Geneva Valentine and Geraldine V. Morrow, both of Union and Hazel (Tub) V. Self of Gaffney; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Rovena Valentine of Spartanburg and James (Pap) and Alma Valentine of Union; six grandchildren, Kelly V. and Lynn Lawson of Union, Brad and Brooke Valentine of Union, Andrew and Lisa Williams of Simpsonville; Kristin W. and Mike Seaver of Wake Forest and Judson and Jeana Valentine of Graniteville; two great-grandchildren, Abigail McCullough Valentine and Joseph O'Neil Lawson, both of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Westside Baptist Church by Dr. Ken Snead, the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Michael Seaver. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Billy Lawson, Ronnie Lawson, Gary Hawkins, Mickey Gowan, Steve Morrow, Kevin Morrow, David Valentine and Robert Valentine.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 p.m. today to form the honorary escort: the Rev. Robert Branch, Lewis Horne, James (Skillet) Morris, J.P. (Pokey) Gossett, Marion Bailey, Bert West, Winston Quinn, the Rev. Coy Callicutt, Eddie Wayne Davis and Bill Jones. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 6-8 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today to await the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 105 Lawson Ave., Union, 29379; or to Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 4052 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Jonesville, 29353. The family is at the home, 111 Teal Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Stephen (Chigger) Wilson
Employed with Bell Petroleum

Stephen Allen (Chigger) Wilson, 56, husband of Elaine Moss Wilson of 1101 West Main St., died Jan. 4, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Wilson was born in Charleston on Nov. 15, 1946, a son of Marvin Allen and Arline Tidwell Wilson of Union.

He was employed with Bell Petroleum Company and formerly was employed with Greer's Exxon for 40 years. He was a 1965 graduate of Union High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Adult II Sunday School Class.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are one daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie W. and Jeff Smith of Buffalo; a sister and brother-in-law, Anita W. and Bobby Hicks of Union; a brother, Gene Wilson of Columbia; two granddaughters, Megan Smith and Morgan Smith, both of Buffalo. Mr. Wilson was predeceased by a sister, Sondra Wilson Dorsey.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Clayton Howerton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Paul S. Greer II, Andy Bailey, Jimmy Lawson, Carl Gist, Don Fowler and Mitchell Jenkins. Members of the Adult II Sunday School Class and members of the Sam Cain Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Brotherhood Fund, 405 East Main St., Union, 29379; or to the Union County Cancer Service, Care of Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union.

The family is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Wilson, 2708 Lockhart Highway, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Sadie V. Queen
Chester native

Sadie Vincent Queen, 81, resident of J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home, Newberry, widow of Robert J. Queen, formerly of 1314 W. Main St. in Union, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in Newberry County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Queen was born in Chester on Jan. 1, 1923, a daughter of the late Dorsey H. and Nellie Helton Vincent. She was a Baptist.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Mary McAbee of Travelers Rest; a brother, Willie T. Vincent of Union; a daughter-in-law, Louise D. Parham of Union; three stepdaughters, Claudia Crook of Blacksburg, Jeanette Gregory of Clinton and Kathy Richardson of Jonesville; a stepson, Robert M. Queen of Buffalo; 11 step grandchildren and a number of step great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Queen was predeceased by a grandson, Roger H. Parham. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Marvin Fullbright. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Nephews will be active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8.

The family is at her home, 1314 W. Main St., Union. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Upstate S.C. Chapter, 110 S. Dean St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302 or to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Raymond L. Robinson

Raymond L. (Buddy) Robinson, 77, husband of Faye Stalsworth Robinson of 2251 Lockhart Highway, Union, died at his residence Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at 12:30 a.m. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Beatrice Blitchington
Retired from Milliken & Co.

Beatrice Viola Henderson Blitchington, 67, widow of Edward Blitchington of 209 Hicks St., Union, died Jan. 4, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Blitchington was born on Feb. 23, 1935, in Union, a daughter of the late Jack and Carrie Lunette Whitehead Henderson.

She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. Mrs. Blitchington was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include four daughters, Doshia Diane Dupree of Spartanburg, Carrie Elaine Jones of Union, Martha Leverne Grant of Blacksburg and Patricia Lynn Blitchington of the home; a son, Charles Allen Blitchington of the home; five grandchildren: Rhonda Kay Ingle, Melissa Lynn Jones, Justin Jones and his wife, Amy; Ashlee Kristen Dupree and Courtney Jean Blitchington; seven great-grandchildren: Kayla Alexis Jones, Khristopher David Jones, Brianna Jo Jones, Angelina Danielle Ingle, Kayla Alicia Ingle, Richard Daniel Ingle, and Amber Marie Trammell; a niece, Theresa Joyner of Columbia; and a nephew, Mark Joyner of Spartanburg.

Mrs. Blitchington was predeceased by a son, Clarence Edward Blitchington; a daughter, Margie Bernice Brooks; and a sister, Mary Joyner. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Warren Jones and the Rev. John J. Cody Jr. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ricky Black, Chris Dupree, Larry Grant, David Holcombe, Louis Henderson and Marcus Beard. Members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group. The body is at the home, 209 Hicks St., where the family will receive friends.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Fairview Baptist Church, 1338 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, Union; or to the Greater Union Church, P.O. Box 709, Union, 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Charles R. Jones
Union County native

BELLEVIEW, Fla. Charles R. Jones, 59, of Belleview, Fla., died Jan. 5, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Jones was born in Union County. He was a car salesman and was a member of Fair Forest Baptist Church in Union.

Survivors include two daughters, Nicole Johnson and Michelle Jones both of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother, Jim Spiller of London, England; an aunt, Joretta B. Smith of Union; a special friend, Janice Rachwal of Ocklawaha, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held later in Union. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Marion County. Hiers Funeral Home of Ocala, Fla. has charge of arrangements.

Sidney S. Nichols
Retired from Milliken & Co.

SPARTANBURG Sidney Spalding Nichols, of 520 Glendalyn Ave., Spartanburg, died Jan. 5, 2003. Mr. Nichols was born in Lowell, Mass. on April 14, 1926, a son of the late Charles B. and Carolyn Leadbetter Nichols. After a family move to Anderson in 1936, Mr. Nichols graduated from Lenox School.

He served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Bowdoin College. Mr. Nichols began his lifelong career in textiles in the Piedmont Region. He was employed by Milliken & Co. in 1957 and retired in 1991. During this time, he served in various capacities including as plant manager of the Lockhart Mill and as the Director of Fiber Procurement for all Milliken mills.

From his retirement until the present, he worked as a consultant for Milliken & Co. as Executive Director of the Milliken Foundation which supports eleemosynary organization across this region. He was an active participant in The Episcopal Church of the Advent, serving as a member of the Vestry and a board member of York Place, a children's residential treatment center for the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina. He was a past president of the South Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association, and a Board Member of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. He was a member of the Piedmont Club and the Mayflower Society.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Marion Guest Nichols; two daughters, Virginia Guest Nichols and Caroline Spalding Nichols both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a son, Charles Guest Nichols and daughter-in-law, Beth Batt Nichols; two grandchildren, Virginia McCoy and John Francis Nichols all of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, David M. Nichols of Center Conway, N.H. Mr. Nichols was predeceased by a brother, Charles S. Nichols.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Advent with the Rev. Dr. Clay Turner officiating. Entombment will be in the church columbarium following the service. The family will be at the home, 520 Glendalyn Ave., Spartanburg. Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Claude M. Allen
World War II veteran

Claude Mills Allen, 78, husband of Emma Deane Osteen Allen of 817 Sardis Road, died Jan. 7, 2003, at 9:30 p.m. in the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia. Mr. Allen was born in Kannapolis, N.C. on July 6, 1924, a son of Pearl Mills Allen of Lexington and the late Rev. Claude Talmadge Allen.

He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mr. Allen was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater, Battles of Western Caroline Operations, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa Gunto, and the liberation of the Philippines. He served aboard the USS Hopping, Commissioned the USS Crouter and the Petrof Bay. Mr. Allen was instrumental in forming the Southside Fire Department and formerly served as fire chief. He was retired from Freeman Gas of Spartanburg and Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Gil Moss of Laurens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Darwin and Janey Allen, Martin and Vickie Allen and Dean and Julie Allen all of Union; three grandchildren, Betsy Allen, Jennie Dean Allen and Chris Allen and his wife Mandy all of Union.

Mr. Allen was predeceased by a sister, Mabel Oliver Painter. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Donald Tillman and Rev. Angelina Price. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8. The family is at the home, 817 Sardis Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lillie Mae Bright
Retired owner of cab companies

Lillie Mae Hawkins Bright, 77, widow of Fred T. Bright Sr., of 203 Scott Street, died Jan. 7, 2003, at 10:10 p.m. in Brookview Health Care in Gaffney after an extended illness. Mrs. Bright was born in Union on April 27, 1925, a daughter of the late Henry and Lizzie Enlow Hawkins.

She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church. Mrs. Bright was retired owner and operator of U-Need-A-Cab Company and Treadway Cab Company.

Surviving are three sons, Fred T. (Buddy) Bright Jr., John A. (Skeet) Bright and James O. (Jim) Bright all of Union; four sisters, Ada Royer and Barbara Robinson both of Chester, Grace Silvers and Carolyn Stegall both of Union; three brothers, Burley Hawkins and Henry Hawkins Jr. both of Union and Harold Hawkins of Spartanburg; three grandsons, Allan Bright, Colby Bright and Tristian Bright all of Union; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Bright of Union; and two step-grandchildren, Kalee and Troy of Union.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
