George Balchin Sr.
Abbeville merchant

GREENWOOD George Milton Balchin Sr., 77, 312 Marietta Drive, husband of Annie Clair Harling Balchin, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at National HealthCare of Greenwood. Born in Elbert County, Ga., Feb. 1, 1926, he was a son of the late William Edgar and Jewel Frost Balchin. He retired from the Commission of Public Works after 21 years of service and was owner and operator of Discount Tires in Abbeville.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Mickey Balchin of Greenwood, two daughters, Cynthia Paul of Greenwood and Clair Harmon of Greenville; four sisters, Sarah Nickles of Union, Billie Wilson and Doris Ashley, both of Honea Path and Flonnie Shaw of Spartanburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Rebecca Jean Balchin and Maxie McDonald.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 Wednesday at Rice Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Jimmy Tucker and the Rev. Dean Webb. The body is at the Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 2:30 Wednesday. The family is at the home and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 9 tonight. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Upstate US Chapter, 521 McDuffie St., Anderson, S.C. 29621. Blyth Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Thelma G. Thrasher
Kelton native

ANDERSON Thelma Juanita Garner Thrasher, 88, widow of Dewey Thrasher, of Route 11, Lakewood Lane, Anderson, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at McCormick Health Care in McCormick. Mrs. Thrasher was born in Kelton May 14, 1915, a daughter of the late Davis Roy Garner and Bessie Adams Garner. She was a homemaker and member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Tommy Thrasher, David Thrasher and Dennis Thrasher, all of Anderson; a step-son, Calvin Thrasher of Anderson; four daughters, Frances Phillips and Marilyn Lanier, both of Anderson, Sandra Thrasher of Greenwood and Patsy Garner of Columbia; a step-daughter, Madge Howell of Spartanburg; two brothers, Everette Garner and Donald Garner, both of Union; five sisters, Joyce Blakley of Columbia; Betty Dean Harvey and Margaret Howell, both of Jonesville and Lou Jean Knox and Nathalis Comer, both North Carolina; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Thrasher was predeceased by a son, Charles Thrasher, a step-son, Malvin Thrasher, and two brothers, Hershel Garner and Wilbur Garner. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Curtis Lanier and the Rev. Wayne Power. Burial will be in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson. The family are at their respective homes and will receive friends at the funeral home today from 5 until 7 p.m. The McDouglald Funeral Home of Anderson has charge of arrangements.

Henry W. Walker

Henry W. Walker died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. The family is at the home of a daughter, 322 N. Church St. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.

James S. Bedenbaugh
Retired from Steamfitter of America

PROSPERITY James Sanders Bedenbaugh, 64, of 7113 S.C. Highway 391, Prosperity, died at his residence Jan. 20, 2003, at 12:30 a.m. after an extended illness. Mr. Bedenbaugh was born in Union on July 24, 1938, a son of the late Herman D. and Lillie Linderman Betenbaugh. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Bedenbaugh was a graduate of Page School, Washington, D.C. and served as a page for Sen. J. Strom Thurmond. He was retired from Steamfitter of America.

Surviving are three daughters, Lisa Bedenbaugh of Middleton, N.Y.; Jennifer Batten of Mundelein, Ill.; and Kori Bedenbaugh of Sparta, Wis.; five sons, James S. Bedenbaugh III of Broken Arrow, Okla.; Carl Bedenbaugh of Elizabeth-town, Pa.; Michael Beden-baugh of Harrisburg, Pa.; Adam Bedenbaugh of Montross, Va.; and Kirk Bedenbaugh of Sparta, Wis.; four brothers, Herman Donald Betenbaugh of Greer, William D. Betenbaugh of Columbus, N.C.; John Roper Betenbaugh of Union and David Robin Betenbaugh of Prosperity; a sister, Pat B. Jennings of Prosperity; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Joseph Bedenbaugh, Donnie Betenbaugh, Jamie Garner, Scott Farmer, David Betenbaugh, Doug Betenbaugh, Paul Burgess, Bruce Betenbaugh and Bob Betenbaugh.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The family is at the home, 7113 S.C. Highway 391, Prosperity, S.C. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Wilma A. LeMaster
Baptist

Wilma Alman LeMaster, 92, widow of Reuben LeMaster of 303 Lawson Ave., died at her residence Jan. 20, 2003, after an extended illness. Mrs. LeMaster was born in Union County on Feb. 22, 1910, a daughter of the late James Berry and Lula Joins Alman. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Norma T. Nash of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. James (Barbara) LeMaster of the home; three grandchildren, Jamie Lyn LeMaster of the home, Larry E. and Rhonda Wix LeMaster and Rhonda and Edsel Arvie Hudson all of Union; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Lyn LeMaster and Blake Alexander LeMaster both reared in the home, Gene LeMaster, Justin LeMaster, Scarlett W. LeMaster, Alan Hudson, Tyler Hudson and David A. and Melissa Trammel Hudson all of Union; a great-granddaughter, Haley Ann Marie Hudson of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. LeMaster was predeceased by three sons, James E. LeMaster, Bobby D. LeMaster and Fredzel E. LeMaster; two sisters and two brothers, Beatrice Carter, Vandalia LeMaster, Troy and J.B. Alman. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Westside Baptist Church by Dr. Ken Snead. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The following are asked to assemble at Westside Baptist Church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Rick Waldrop, Joe Groves, Roy Puckett, Randolph Whitehead, N.B. Green, Lawrence Price, Barth Willard, Donnie Vinson, Dr. Gerald Fielder, Larry Malpass, Vic Taus, Tommy Liming, William Willard, Bill Jones, Garald Inabinett, Francis Ramsey, Gene Pierce and Donald Harrison. Members of the Madeline Holcombe Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 303 Lawson Ave., Union. Memorials may be made to the Westside Baptist Church Building Fund, 105 Lawson Ave., Union. The S.R. Francis E. McBride
Retired from Milliken & Co.

JONESVILLE Francis E. (Friday) McBride, 64, husband of Billie Laval McBride of 265 Parks Farm Road, Jonesville, died Jan. 20, 2003, at 1:45 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Mr. McBride was born in Jonesville on Oct. 7, 1938, a son of the late Lewis and Edith Horne McBride.

He was a member of Jonesville United Methodist Church, a former member of the South Carolina National Guard and was a member of the Lan-Yair Country Club. Mr. McBride was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was retired from Milliken & Co., where he had been employed for 32 years and at the time of his retirement he was Location Manager for Midway Distribution Center.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a brother, James Randall (Randy) McBride of Jonesville; a sister, Brea Kay McBride of West Springs; two nieces and two nephews, Jennifer Marshall Laval of Columbia and Katelan Sanford of West Springs, William Lawrence Laval IV of Columbia and Jerome Louie McBride of Spartanburg. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel by the Rev. Scott Gilmer.

Burial will be in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ronald T. Purkey, Jimmy Robinson, Perry Buice Jr., Gene Croxdale, James (Buck) Collins and Dan Baughman. Employees of Midway Distribution Center are asked to assemble at the funeral chapel at 2:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 1-2:30 p.m. The family is at the home, 265 Parks Farm Road, Jonesville. Memorials may be made to Jonesville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 787, Jonesville, S.C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mildred McSwain
Retired from Buffalo Mill

Mildred Ruth McSwain, 80, of 306 Maple St., wife of Roy McSwain, died Jan. 19, 2003, at 12:20 p.m. in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg after an extended illness. Mrs. McSwain was born in Union County on March 22, 1922, a daughter of the late J.D. Johns and Mary Vinson Haney and was raised by the late Eulas Haney. She was a member of the Union Church of God. Mrs. McSwain was a graduate of Union High School and was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. She was first married to the late L.G. (Pete) Wright.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a step-daughter, Dianne M. Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Eloise Sumner of Laurens; two brothers, James Earl Haney and Harold Gene Haney both of Buffalo; four grandchildren, Micha Andrews, Joel Andrews and Bethany Andrews all of Birmingham, Ala. and Phillip Mullinnix of Buffalo; a great-grandchild, Olivia Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.; and two nieces, Susan Mullinnix of Buffalo and Patty Keasler of Union.

Mrs. McSwain was predeceased by a son, Ted Wright. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lacey Jones and Rev. Micha Andrews. Burial will be in the Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Joel Andrews, Phillip Mullinnix, David Malloy, Ronnie Wade, Brent Wright and Lewis Clark. The body will remain at the funeral home.

The family is at the home, 306 Maple Street, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

James C. Wright
World War II veteran

James Cecil (Red) Wright, 79, husband of Catherine Smart Wright of 440 Peach Orchard Road, died Jan. 20, 2003, at 10:07 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Wright was born in Cherokee County on June 1, 1923, a son of the late James Douglas and Dona Ellis Wright. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church. Mr. Wright was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Torrington Co., Tyger River Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sherin W. Adair of Forest City, N.C.; four grandchildren, Bryan Adair, Benjamin Adair, Bradley Adair and Jeffrey Wright; and eight great-granddaughters, Brooke Barrett, Blayke Adair, Skylyn Adair, Kaley Adair, Riley Adair, Kristen Adair, Chloe Adair and Jayci Wright.

Mr. Wright was predeceased by a daughter and two sons, Charlene Wright Chastain, Dennis Wright and Charles Grason Wright; two grandchildren, David Barrett and Timothy Barrett; and a brother, Forrest Eldrige Wright. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church by the Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Dale Lynch.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service.

Irvin Crawford died Tuesday night in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Union Community Funeral Home.

Fields H. Hamrick
Founder of Hamrick's Jewelry

Fields Howard Hamrick, 84, of 209 Lakeside Dr., Union, widower of Doris Gwinn Hamrick, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at 11:33 a.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mr. Hamrick was born in Earl, N.C., on March 4, 1919, a son of the late William Andrew Hamrick and Sallie Roberts Hamrick. He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church of Union. He was a graduate of Union High School and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force in England and France. Mr. Hamrick was founder of Hamrick's Jewelry Store and the Remnant Store. He was first married to the late Hazel O'Shields Hamrick.

Surviving are a brother, Billy Joe Hamrick of Union and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Hamrick was predeceased by four sisters, Vera Hamrick, Madge H. Bishop, Louise H. Jenkins and Nell Hamrick; two brothers, Neil Hamrick and Fred Hamrick and a dear nephew, Dean Jenkins. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joe W. Smith.

Active pallbearers will be Tom Adamo, Barry Lawson, Bill Wingo, Wayne Harmon, Mike Anthony, Paul Pickens and Steve Brazil. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main Street, Union, S.C. 29379. Anderson A. Thrift
Former J.P. Stevens Co. employee

Anderson Andrew Thrift, 68, of 308 Hicks St., Union, husband of Bertha Whitehead Trammell Thrift, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at 10:56 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Thrift was born in Whitmire on May 1, 1935, a son of the late George Raymond Thrift and Maggie Greene Thrift. He was formerly employed with J. P. Stevens Co., Whitmire Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are five step-daughters, Lisa, Sherry and Marla, all of Greenville, Melissa Trammell and Melany Trammell, both of Union; two step-sons, Dennis Trammell and Thomas Trammell, both of Union; a sister, Shelby Jean Watts of Union; two brothers, Henry Raymond Thrift of Richmond, Va., and William Edward Thrift of Whitmire; 16 grandchildren, 8 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Thrift was predeceased by a sister, Mary Grace Boyter. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in the Whitmire Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Timmy Fowler, Dennis Fowler Jr., Marion Thrift, Tim Watts, Chris Vaughn and Jamie Vaughn. The body is at the home, 308 Hicks St., Union and will be placed in the funeral chapel at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Henry W. Walker
U.S. Forest Service retiree

Henry William Walker, 86, of 328 N. Church St., husband of Helen Carter Walker, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mr. Walker was born March 18, 1917 in Cherokee County, a son of the late Thomas Matthew and Alpha Omega Bobo Walker. He was of the Baptist faith and retired from the U.S. Forest Service.

Surviving are four sons, Gene, Otis, Paul and Ben Walker, all of Hartford, Conn.; four daughters, Harriet (Bobby) Means of Union, Lucille (Leo) Hunter of Windur, Conn., Lillie (James) Gregory of Bloomfield, Conn., and Johnnie Willie Gore of Hartford Conn; a daughter-in-law, Rose Walker of Hartford, Conn; two sisters-in-law, Alice Walker of Jonesville and Arie Walker of Hartford, Conn.; 30 grandchildren and 51 great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Jessie Walker, four brothers: Charles, William, Wade and James Walker; and a sister, Jessie L. Littlejohn. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Monarch Baptist Church by the Rev. Malacki Rogers. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday. The family is at the home, 322 N. Church St., Union. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
