Jim Williamson
World War II veteran

James G. (Jim) Williamson, 81, of 119 Woodlawn Ave., Union, widower of Gwendolyn (Gwen) Bullington Williamson, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at 8:26 a. m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Williamson was born in Guthrieville in York County on March 14, 1922, a son of the late William Harvey and Estelle Davidson Williamson. He had been a resident of Union since 1947. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and was a member of the Anderson Bible Class.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Sixth Division of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Mason, a member of the Elks Club since 1947, a member of the Communication Workers of America, the American Legion, Telephone Pioneers and was active in the Union County Democratic party. Mr. Williamson was an employee of Southern Bell and BellSouth Telephone Co. for 46 years.

Surviving are three daughters, the Rev. Dr. Lynn Williamson and her husband, Dan Hauck of Shelbyville, Ky., Kathy W. Hoke and husband, Chip, of Richmond, Va., and Jane W. Kiekhaefer and husband, Russ, of Midland, Mich.; two brothers, Bill Williamson of Charlotte and Neil Williamson of McConnells; six grandchildren, Jimmy, Michael and Harry Hoke of Richmond, Va., and Becca, Katlyn and Allyson Kiekhaefer of Midland, Mich.; a number of nieces, nephews and their families.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Charlie Horne. Burial will be in the Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery in McConnells with military honors. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30.

The family will be at the home, 119 Woodlawn Ave., Union. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Union, S.C. 29379 or to the Cemetery Fund of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 4858 McConnells Highway, York, S.C. 29745. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Wilma A. LeMaster
Baptist

Wilma Alman LeMaster, 92, widow of Reuben LeMaster of 303 Lawson Ave., died at her residence Jan. 20, 2003, after an extended illness. Mrs. LeMaster was born in Union County on Feb. 22, 1910, a daughter of the late James Berry and Lula Joins Alman. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Norma T. Nash of Pensacola, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. James (Barbara) LeMaster of the home; three grandchildren, Jamie Lyn LeMaster of the home, Larry E. and Rhonda Wix LeMaster and Rhonda and Edsel Arvie Hudson all of Union; eight great-grandchildren, Christopher Lyn LeMaster and Blake Alexander LeMaster both reared in the home, Gene LeMaster, Justin LeMaster, Scarlett W. LeMaster, Alan Hudson, Tyler Hudson and David A. and Melissa Trammel Hudson all of Union; a great-granddaughter, Haley Ann Marie Hudson of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. LeMaster was predeceased by three sons, James E. LeMaster, Bobby D. LeMaster and Fredzel E. LeMaster; two sisters and two brothers, Beatrice Carter, Vandalia LeMaster, Troy and J.B. Alman. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Westside Baptist Church by Dr. Ken Snead. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Alman, Rusty Parker, Ricky Wix, Robert (Skip) Nash, Tommy Willard and Gerald Alman. The following are asked to assemble at Westside Baptist Church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Rick Waldrop, Joe Groves, Roy Puckett, Randolph Whitehead, N.B. Green, Lawrence Price, Barth Willard, Donnie Vinson, Dr. Gerald Fielder, Larry Malpass, Vic Taus, Tommy Liming, William Willard, Bill Jones, Garald Inabinett, Francis Ramsey, Gene Pierce and Donald Harrison.

Members of the Madeline Holcombe Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends today night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 303 Lawson Ave., Union. Memorials may be made to the Westside Baptist Church Building Fund, 105 Lawson Ave., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Colene Jeter Sims
Retired from Monarch Mill

Colene Jeter Sims, 88, of 128 Young Alley, wife of James Sims, died Jan. 17, 2003, in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Sims was born in Union County on April 10, 1914, a daughter of the late Russell and Mary Rice Jeter. She was a member of Antioch AME Zion Church where she was mother of the church and a member of the choir. She was retired from Monarch Mill.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Ecola Weeks of Union; one son, James Glenn Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Jimmy Jeter of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Antioch A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Vernell Speights officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be today from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home, 128 Young Alley, Union. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Sherri W. Spry
Baptist

PAULINE Sherri Renae West Spry, 39, wife of Jeff Spry of 1360 Mt. Lebanon Road, Pauline, died Tuesday morning Jan. 21, 2003 from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mrs. Spry was born in Union on June 2, 1963, a daughter of Bobby Morris West and Brenda Varner West of the Mt. Lebanon Road, Pauline. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Mrs. Spry was a graduate of Dorman High School, Class if 1981.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are a daughter, Bre Ann Spry of the home; and her paternal grandmother, Lucille West of Pauline. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church by Dr. Randy Pettit. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ernie West, Dell Mitchell, Kevin Spry, Clay Lawson, Cory Lawson and Gerald Lawson. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1360 Mt. Lebanon Road, Pauline, and at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Morris West, 1506 Mt. Lebanon Road, Pauline. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Wesley T. Treadway Sr.
Owner and operator of Treadway Realty and Building, Inc.

GRIFFIN, Ga. Wesley T. Treadway Sr., 75, of Griffin, Ga., died Jan. 21, 2003, at the Georgia Baptist Hospital. Mr. Treadway was born on Jan. 18, 1928 in Union, a son of the late John Treadway and the late Nancy Rector Treadway.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Griffin and served on the Griffin/Spalding Recreation Board. He was very active in coaching youth sports. He owned and operated Treadway Realty and Building, Inc. Mr. Treadway was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and an avid golfer. He also served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Margaret West Treadway of Griffin, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Stan and Laura Treadway of Griffin, Ga.; Phil and Jan Treadway of Warner Robins, Ga.; Jeff and Holly Treadway of Concord, Ga.; and Wes Jr. and Nancy Treadway of Griffin, Ga.; sisters, Sally Varnar of Union and Joy Rue Henderson of Newberry; and grandchildren, Shea Treadway, Cameron Treadway, Jay Treadway, Cory Treadway, Ben Treadway, Anna Treadway, Alden Treadway, Margaret Anne Treadway, and Kathy Treadway.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Westwood Gardens by Dr. Bruce Morgan. Friends may visit the family Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home and on Friday from 2-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the First Baptist Building Fund in memory of Mr. Treadway. Haisten McCullough Funeral Home, 1155 Everee Inn Road, Griffin, Ga., has charge of arrangements.

James C. Wright
World War II veteran

James Cecil (Red) Wright, 79, husband of Catherine Smart Wright of 440 Peach Orchard Road, died Jan. 20, 2003, at 10:07 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Wright was born in Cherokee County on June 1, 1923, a son of the late James Douglas and Dona Ellis Wright. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church. Mr. Wright was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Torrington Co., Tyger River Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sherin W. Adair of Forest City, N.C.; four grandchildren, Bryan Adair, Benjamin Adair, Bradley Adair and Jeffrey Wright; and eight great-granddaughters, Brooke Barrett, Blayke Adair, Skylyn Adair, Kaley Adair, Riley Adair, Kristen Adair, Chloe Adair and Jayci Wright. Mr. Wright was predeceased by a daughter and two sons, Charlene Wright Chastain, Dennis Wright and Charles Grason Wright; two grandchildren, David Barrett and Timothy Barrett; and a brother, Forrest Eldrige Wright.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church by the Rev. Benny Green and Rev. Dale Lynch. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Brad Adair, Bryan Adair, Ben Adair, Jeff Wright, Troy Wright and Arnold Wright. The following are asked to assemble at the church Thursday at 2:45 p.m. to sit in a group: Members of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and Dan Sanders, Mary Knox and John Knox.

The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 440 Peach Orchard Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, Suite 300, Heywood Ave., Spartanburg, S.C. 29302, or Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Nellie D. Giles
Former Great Lakes Carbon Corp. employee

MORGANTON, N.C. Nellie Rivers Duckworth Giles, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at Grace Heights Nursing Center. Born July 6, 1912 in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Fons Duckworth and Viola Fax Duckworth. She was preceded in death by her husband, N. Yates Giles, and several brothers and sisters. After attending Woman's College of Greensboro, she held several positions, but her favorite was at Great Lakes Carbon Corp. She was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church and a long time member of the Heilhecker Sunday School Class.

She is survived by two sons, N. Yates Giles Jr. and wife, Bennie, of Union and Fons H. Giles and fiance, Trice Best, of Morganton; a granddaughter, Caroline G. Barker and husband, Scott, of Laurens; a grandson, Kelly H. Giles and wife, Mary Beth, of Carrboro, N.C.; great grandchildren, Alexandra and Hampton Barker; and a sister, Bess Turner. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 Saturday at Burke Memorial Park with the Rev. Jason Harvey officiating. The family will receive friends 12:30 until 1:30 Saturday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Heilhecker Sunday School Class, c/o The First United Methodist Church, 200 N. King St., Morganton, N,C, 28655 or to a charity of one's choice. Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Giles family with arrangements.

James R. Gregory
Retired from Spartan Mills

SPARTANBURG James Russell Gregory, 83, of 4408 Grissom Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at White Oak Manor. He was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Union to the late Russell Robert and Maudie Marie Jett Gregory and was the husband of the late Lovie Horton Gregory. He was retired from Spartan Mills and was a member of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, James M. Gregory Sr., and his wife, Peggy G., of Spartanburg; two grandsons, Myron Gregory and his wife, Leigh Ann, of Spartanburg and Mark Gregory and his wife, Johnna Paige, of Spartanburg; two great-grandsons, Manning Gregory and Justin Cantrell, both of Spartanburg; three great-granddaughters, Hannah Gregory, Jerica Lemon and Jewel Gregory, all of Spartanburg; a sister, Shirley Teague of Union and a brother, Marvin (Buck) Gregory of Union. Visitation will be 6 until 8 tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Danny Garrett and the Rev. Ronnie Norris. The family is at the home of his son, 4408 Grissom Road, Spartanburg. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Thomas P. Kennedy
World War II veteran

SENECA Thomas (Tom) Perrin Kennedy, 87, of 103 Shorecrest Drive, Seneca, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at the Oconee Memorial Hospital. He was born in Petersburg, Va., the son of the late Henry Lee and Corinne Rychen Peale Kennedy and was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Rychen Kennedy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II as a Navy pilot and retired after 27 years as a reservist. He was also a retired commercial photographer, a member of Saint Mark United Methodist Church and the Seneca Rotary Club.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Hamlin Kennedy of the home; a daughter, Diana Kennedy Light of Ervine, Calif., a son, Jeffrey Parker Kennedy of Edwardsville, Ill; a brother, Benjamin Peale Kennedy of Wilmington, N.C.; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at 11 a.m. in the Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Morgan officiating. The graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. in Rosemont Cemetery in Union. Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home of Seneca is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma G. Thrasher
Kelton native

ANDERSON Thelma Juanita Garner Thrasher, 88, widow of Dewey Thrasher, of Route 11, Lakewood Lane, Anderson, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at McCormick Health Care in McCormick. Mrs. Thrasher was born in Kelton May 14, 1915, a daughter of the late Davis Roy Garner and Bessie Adams Garner. She was a homemaker and member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Tommy Thrasher, David Thrasher and Dennis Thrasher, all of Anderson; a step-son, Calvin Thrasher of Anderson; four daughters, Frances Phillips and Marilyn Lanier, both of Anderson, Sandra Thrasher of Greenwood and Patsy Garner of Columbia; a step-daughter, Madge Howell of Spartanburg; two brothers, Everette Garner and Donald Garner, both of Union; five sisters, Joyce Blakley of Columbia; Betty Dean Harvey and Margaret Howell, both of Jonesville and Lou Jean Knox and Nathalee Comer, both North Carolina; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thrasher was predeceased by a son, Charles Thrasher, a step-son, Malvin Thrasher, and three brothers, Hershel Garner, Wilbur Garner and Leonard Garner, who died in World War II.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Curtis Lanier and the Rev. Wayne Power. Burial was in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson. The families were at their respective homes and received friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. The McDouglald Funeral Home of Anderson had charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ann Mills
Employed with Sloan Construction Co.

Shirley Ann Mills, 44, of 100 College Street, died Jan. 19, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was born in Union County on Aug. 9, 1958, to Inez Hampton Mills of Union and the late Henry Mills. She attended Union County Public Schools and worked for Sloan Construction Company.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sons, Chadrick and Calvin Mills of Union; two sisters, Patricia Davis of Union and Francenia Mills of Buffalo; one uncle, James Hampton of Union; two nephews Kelvin Miller of Union and Lawrence Davis of Spartanburg; three nieces, Tonya Mills and Yasma Davis of Union and Temetra Mills of Carlisle; three great-nephews and two great-nieces.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church by the Rev. Courtney Mills. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
