Rev. Robert J. Howell
Retired United Methodist minister

PAWLEY'S ISLAND The Rev. Robert Joseph Howell, 72, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at The Lakes at Litchfield at Pawley's Island. Rev. Howell was born in Union on Sept. 19, 1930, a son of the late Cohen Millus Howell and Azalee Smith Howell.

He was a graduate of Union High School and Wofford College and received a Master of Divinity degree from Emory University. Rev. Howell served in the Navy. Rev. Howell was a retired United Methodist minister and a member of the S.C. United methodist Annual Conference. He was a minister in a number of United Methodist churches in South Carolina including Landrum, Williston/Blackville, Carteret St. in Beaufort, Duncan Memorial in Georgetown, St. John's in Anderson and First Church in Myrtle Beach.

He retired in June 1995 as superintendent of the Marion District. Rev. Howell was a former trustee of The Wesley Foundation at USC. The Methodist Home in Orange-burg, Spartanburg Methodist College and Wofford College. He was a former member of a number of Rotary Clubs and was a recipient of the (Outstanding Citizen Award) by the Williston Rotary Club. Rev. Howell was also a recipient of the (Service to Mankind Award) by the Sertoma Club of Beaufort.

Surviving are his wife, Doris O'Dell Howell of Pawley's Island; three sons, the Rev. Dr. Robert J. Howell Jr. of Summerville, Stephen M. Howell of Pawley's Island and Timothy O. Howell of Greenville; a daughter, Anne Howell Scott of Georgetown; a sister, Patricia H,. Roberson of King, N.C., and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a m. at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown.

Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill, the Rev. Dr. Robert J. Howell Jr., the Rev. Milton L. McGuirt and the Rev. Dr. T. Reginald Thackston. Burial will be Friday at 1 p. m. in Union Memorial Gardens in Union. The family will receive friends at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to Tideland Community Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser St., Georgetown, S.C. 29440 or Alzheimer's Association Coastal Carolina S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 80459, Charleston, S.C. 29416-0459. Meyer Funeral Home of Georgetown has charge of arrangements.

Anthony Alonzo Hunter
Metromont employee

Anthony Alonzo Hunter, 31, of 218 Peakesville Road, Buffalo, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Laurens County Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Jan. 13, 1972, the son of Tommie and Sylvia Hunter Mitchell of Buffalo and Charlie Anderson of Spartanburg.

He was a 1991 graduate of Union High School and was employed by Metromont Materials of Spartanburg. Surviving are his parents; two sons, Anthony Alonzo Hunter, Jr. and Princeton Alexander Hunter of Union; three brothers, Antonio Mitchell of Union; Nathaniel Mitchell of Buffalo and Charlie Anderson, Jr. of Spartanburg; and a grandmother, Angie P. Hunter of Buffalo.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Wyatts Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Jefferson N. McDowell. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and family tonight from 7-8 at the Gibson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel. The Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Sligh Ruff Jr.
World War II veteran

George Sligh Ruff, Jr., 133 Clairmont Road, Union, passed away Feb. 17, 2003. Mr. Ruff was born in Newberry County on May 3, 1917, a son of the late George S. Ruff Sr., and Nenie Caldwell Ruff. A graduate of Newberry High School, he was a veteran of World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for service with the IV Infantry Division in the invasion of Normandy.

Mr. Ruff was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was a member of American Legion Post 22 for 47 years. For more than 50 years he was the owner and operator of Gadberry Amoco Service, South Street. He also worked at Greer's Service Station of Union.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth R. (Lib) Ruff of 52 years; a daughter, Margaret C. (Margie) Ruff of the home and a son; Lt. Col. George R. Ruff and his wife Margarita Ruff of Alexandria, Va. Mr. Ruff has four grandchildren: Bradley Ruff, Brian Ruff and Barton Ruff of Athens, Ala., and Gabriella Ruff of Alexandria, Va. Also three sisters, Mrs. Dayton E. (Catherine) Hardwick of Bedford, N.H; Mrs. Edward W. (Frances) Counts of Prosperity, and Mrs. Ralph (Elizabeth) Baker of Newberry.

He was predeceased by a brother, James C. Ruff of Union. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in Union Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Gary Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church, St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mabel West Fowler
Former retail salesperson

Mabel West Fowler, 83, widow of William B. Fowler, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Fowler was the daughter of the late Claude M. and Annie Belle Gist West. She worked for many years on Main Street in retail sales at Belk Department Store and Graham Cash Co.

Mrs. Fowler was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church and a long time member of the choir. She is survived by two sisters, Catherine W. Taylor of Union and Virginia W. Adams and husband Sam of Seneca; a brother, Herbert West and wife Betty of Bamberg; two nieces and a nephew, Shirley Vaughan and husband Charlie, Anne Mitros and husband Pat and Buddy West and wife, Kim; three great-nieces and two great-nephews, Kitty Vaughan Cindy Hulon, Hagan West, Ashley Mitros and Caulder West.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Bowling officiating. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of Shirley and Charlie Vaughan, 212 Hillcrest Drive.

Active pallbearers wil be Pat Mitros, Ashley Mitros, Bob Gist, Ralph Greer, Bob Bolick and Joel Stepp. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, Choir Robe Fund, Rice Avenue, Union, S.C. 29379, The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

William H. Kennett
World War II veteran

William Henry Kennett, 82, husband of Eula Crocker Kennett of 2322 Whitmire Highway, Union, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Kennett was born in Union on Sept. 6, 1920, a son of the late George Dewey and Ruth Toney Kennett.

He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a Mason and a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple. Mr. Kennett was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from Carlisle and Associates. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Paula Kennett of Leesville. Mr. Kennett was predeceased by a sister and five brothers: Pat Kennett Millwood, George (Joe) Kennett, James Kennett, Tony Kennett, Charles Kennett and Ernest Kennett.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Warren Jones. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. The family is at the home, 2322 Whitmire Highway, Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fairview Baptist Church Building Fund, 1338 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Lucille Lake
Union County native

Dorothy Lucille Lake, 67, of 1510 Rothley Ave., Willow Grove, Pa., wife of Alexander Lake, died Feb. 11, 2003, in the Abington Memorial Hospital. She was born in Union County Dec. 17, 1935, a daughter of the late Lee and Annie Bell Glenn.

She was employed with Commercial Union Insurance Co. for 25 years. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and St. John of the Cross Catholic Church. She received her education from Sims High School and received her degree from Bloomfield College. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sisters, Rose M. Johnson of Willow Grove, Pa., and Azalee Greer of Detroit, Mich; one granddaughter, Sheena Coates of Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church in the Kelton Community with the Rev. J. C. Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 12 noon Saturday to await the hour of service. The family will receive friends at their respective homes. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Loretta Scarborough Rogers
West Springs native

JONESVILLE Loretta Caroline Scarborough Rogers, 65, of 1106 Jonesville Highway, widow of Wayne Rogers, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at 11:55 a.m. in the B.J. Workman Hospital in Woodruff. Mrs. Rogers was born in West Springs on March 14, 1937, a daughter of the late Calvin and Margaret Bogan Scarborough.

She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Sandy Cooper of Jonesville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Bill Powell and Sherry Cooper of Evans, Ga.; Susan and Len Smith of Pauline and Carole and Allen Richards of Woodruff; nine grandchildren, Kia Henderson, Josh Kimbrell, Clay Kimbrell, Ashley Smith, Adam Smith, Clint Smith, Brooke Rogers, Justin Rogers and Hunter Prince; and a great-grandchild, Blaine Henderson.

Mrs. Rogers was predeceased by a brother, Lee Scarborough. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilead Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Lawton Neely, the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev. Joe Stover. Burial will be in Bogansville United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Todd Scarborough, Tommy Scarborough, Timmy Scarborough, Bobby Fleming, Buddy Fleming and Buck Peay.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 1:45 p. m. to form the honorary escort, members of the Rev. Jerry Lawson's Sunday School Class and Dr. David Keith, Bud Parrish and the Rev. Joseph Stover. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to Interim Hospice, Suite 101, 775 Spartan Blvd., Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Robbie Burgess
Thompson Grading employee

WOODRUFF Robert (Robbie) Allen Burgess, 46, of 1171 Racetrack Road, Woodruff, husband of Kathy Crescitelli Burgess, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at the home of his mother in Union. Mr. Burgess was born in Union on Feb. 11, 1957, a son of Betty Marcelle Dover Burgess of Union and the late Otis Dean Burgess. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church of Woodruff. Mr. Burgess was a veteran of the 82nd Airborne, U. S. Army, and was employed with Thompson Grading of Woodruff.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Erica Smith and Lisa Johnson, both of Union; a sister, Betty Burgess Beverly of Raleigh, N.C.; three brothers, Dean Burgess and Kenny Burgess, both of Union and Dennis Burgess of West Springs; three stepsons, Jason Burgess, Brandon Burgess and Joseph Burgess, all of the home; a grandson, Thomas Lee Smith of Union, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green. Burial was in the Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Jason Burgess, Brandon Burgess, Joseph Burgess, Shane Burgess, Daniel Burgess and Michael Burgess. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night.

The family is at the home of his mother, Marcelle Dover Burgess, 135 Old Shetley Place. Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands Ministries of woodruff, 206 Chamblin St., Woodruff, S.C. 29388. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mary Ann Gill
Former Conso and Union Mill employee

Mary Ann Varner Gill, 63, of Pinckney Place, 1300 S. Pinckney St., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Gill was born in Buffalo on Aug. 4, 1940, a daughter of the late Oren Farr Varner and Dorothy Quinn Varner. She was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Gill was formerly employed with Conso Products and United Merchants, Union Plant. She was first married to the late Wayne Hawkins.

Surviving are a son, Charles N. Gill of Lockhart; a daughter, Pamela Hawkins Jacobs of Spartanburg; a sister, Shirley V. Whitmire of Connecticut; a brother, Carl Eugene Varner of Laurens; three grandchildren, Ashley Gill, Amanda Jacobs and Tori Jacobs; and one great-grandchild, Cameron Lynne Gill. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Vic Elliott, Dennis Frost, Mark Wade, Don Randall, Gerald McCool and Bobby Bolin. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p. m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of Brenda Cameron, 1500 Mt. Tabor Church Road. Memorials may be made to the Philippi Fire Department, First Responders, 263 Philippi Church Rood, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Harold Dean Jones
Construction worker

Harold Dean Jones, 55, of 102-B Tiger Court, died Thursday, Feb, 20, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Jones was born Jan. 5, 1948 in Union County, a son of the late Richard Sr. and Mary Jones. He attended Union County public schools and was a construction worker.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Jones of Union; a daughter, Carolyn Jones of Union; three bothers, James (Molly) Jones of Washington, D.C., Jerry (Judy) Jones and Richard Jones of Union; two sisters, Janie Lee Holmes of Union and Betty (Herbert) Klubec of Florida. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p. m. at the Gibson & Brown Chapel.

Burial will be in Beaty's Chapel AME Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 219 Gault Ave. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Martin L. McCoy
World War II veteran

Martin Lee McCoy, 85, husband of Nellie Ivey McCoy of 2247 Lockhart Highway, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at 6:48 a. m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. McCoy was born in Chester County on Oct. 23 1917, a son of the late Lee McCoy and Sarah Elizabeth Dickens McCoy Carter. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion. Mr. McCoy was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sisters, Nellie Middlebrooks of Spartanburg, Edna Sinclair of Columbia and Margaret Hyatt of West Springs; two brothers, Earl McCoy and Horace Carter, both of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. McCoy was predeceased by a sister and four brothers, Myrtle Busby, Willie McCoy, Jim McCoy, Tom McCoy and Charlie McCoy.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Greene and the Rev. Will Brown. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Ray Garren, Mark Vinson, Terry Fant, Rick Garren, Charles McCoy and Steve McCoy.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of Cecil O'Dell's Sunday School Class and Charlie Kelly, Charley Hughes, Gerald Lawson, Dennis Moore and Dr. David Keith. The staff and employees of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home of his sister-in-law, Teresa I. Lawson, 2245 Lockhart Highway. Memorials may be made to the Mon-Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
