Self-employed contractor

David Ray (Scatter) Wood, 63, of 1398 Monarch Highway, Union, died Sunday morning, Feb.22, 2004, after a sudden illness. Mr. Wood was born in Union County Dec. 8, 1940, the son of Edyth Davis 1Wood and the late Fant Wood. He was a self-employed building contractor and a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are an aunt, Lavonia Holt of Bufffalo and several cousins. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Benny Greene. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30.

Honorary pallbearers are Rick Smith, Bobby Smith, Lynn Johnson, Billy Jennings, Billy Holt and Ronnie Belue. Honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 1:30 pm. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Federation of the Blind of South Carolina, 119 S. Kilbourne Rd., Columbia, S.C. The family is at the home of Lavonia Holt, 134 Buffalo St., Buffalo. Lewis Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Rhonda G. Hardy
Whitmire resident

WHITMIRE Rhonda Gail Hardy, 49, of 117 Eds Circle, Whitmire, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004. ]She was the daughter of Minnie Lee Hardy and the late Tommie Lewis Hardy. She was a member of St. Matthew A.M.E. Zion Church.

Surviving in addition to her mother of the home are two sisters, Lanita Faye Hardy and Fannie Narissa (Willie) Route of Whitmire; two brothers, Rickey Dean Hardy of Whitmire and Jimmy (Vonne) Whitener of Charlotte, N.C.; three aunts, Donzell (David) Rice of Whitmire, Elwillie (William) Sims and Lois H. McClurkin of Union and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Matthew A. M. E. Zion Church in Whitmire. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Thursday. Hunter Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.

Jean S. Yount
Dry cleaning manager

Jean Stoudemire Yount, 72, widow of Joseph Mac Yount, of 1300 S. Pinckney St., Pinckney Place, Union, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Yount was born in Newberry County July 13, 1931, the daughter of the late Boozer and Julia Roberts Stoudemire. Mrs. Yount was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church of Fort Mil and was employed as manager of several dry cleaners across the upstate.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie E. and Judy K. Yount of Union; two sisters, Mattie Lee Vanderford of Union and Jo Anne Reid of Lexington; a grandson, Steven Jacob Yount of Union; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Daniel David and Jenni Yount of Colorado; a step-grandson, a stepgranddaughter, both of Colorado; three nieces, three nephews, three great nephews, a great niece and two special friends, Tyger Shetley and Rayburn Smith.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb and the Rev. Ralph Lawson Sr. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 9 at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel. The family is at the home of Mrs. Yount's sister, Mattie Vanderford, 124 City View Circle, Union. Lewis Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Corey Booker
Union Services employee

Corey (Pee Wee) Booker, 35, of 114 Springdale Drive, died Feb. 24, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Booker was born in Union County on Feb. 11, 1968, a son of Irma Booker and Robert Coleman. He was employed with Union Services for 15 years. He was a member of Beaty's Chapel AME Zion Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Tina Coleman Waugh of Hartford, Con.; a brother, Robert Coleman Jr. of Hartford, Conn.; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beaty's Chapel AME Zion Church in Union with the Rev. Doris Holmes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation at the funeral home will be until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until noon on Thursday. The family is at the home of his aunt, Peggy Booker, 513 Union Blvd. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Louis C. Griffin
World War II veteran

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Louis E. Griffin, 81, of 10811 John Russell Road., Charlotte, N.C., former resident of Spartanburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2003 at 4:40 p. m. in Carolina Medical Center. Mr. Griffin was born in Union County on June 27, 1921, a son of the late Albert L. and Lillie Petty Griffin. He was reared in Lockhart where he was a graduate of Lockhart High School, a graduate of The Citadel and received his master's degree from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Griffin was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy and was a retired accountant for Reeves Brothers Manufacturing Co. of Spartanburg.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews: Mr. and Mrs. James R. Ferguson of Charlotte, with whom he had made his home for the last two years; Mr. and Mrs. William Wood of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. Don McGuire of Norwood, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Griffin of Duncan; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Griffin of Charlotte; the Rev. and Mrs. Bill Vanderford of Spartanburg; Denise Griffith of Hendersonville; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Murray of Harrisburg, Va.; James Worthy of Marietta, Ga.; Mr. and Mrs. Shelton Worthy of Westland, Mich., and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Worthy of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Lettre Griffin of Hendersonville, N. C.

Memorials may be made to the Carolinas Neuro-muscular-ALS Center, P.O. Box 32861, Charlotte, N. C. 28232-2861. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Martha Irene Hardy
Retired from United Merchants

Martha Irene (Mot) Hardy, 69, of 118 East Lee St., wife of Jesse J. Hardy Sr., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Hardy was born Sept. 10, 1933 in Union County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Ethel Rice Young. She was a member of Antioch AME Church and a retired employee of United Merchants.

Surviving are her husband of the home; three sons, Arthur Jerome Hardy of Charlotte, N.C.; Jesse J. Hardy Jr. and Michael E. Hardy Sr., both of the home; one daughter, Jacqueline H. Fleming of Union; 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church by the Rev. Vermell Speights. Burial in the Antioch AME Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-9 at Antioch AME Church, Lovers Lane Road In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Antioch AME Church, P.O. Box 1093, Union, S.C. 29379. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Louis C. Griffin
World War II veteran

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Louis E. Griffin, 81, of 10811 John Russell Road., Charlotte, N.C., former resident of Spartanburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at 4:40 p. m. in Carolina Medical Center. Mr. Griffin was born in Union County on June 27, 1921, a son of the late Albert L. and Lillie Petty Griffin.

James Arthur Lemon
Retired from J.P. Stevens

James Arthur Lemon, 73, of 296 Meansville Road, Apt. #H-5, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mr. Lemon was born Nov. 25, 1929 in Union County, the son of the late Arthur and Ella Means lemon. He was retired from J. P. Stevens.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lemon of the home; one daughter, May H. Lyles of Ohio; one brother, George Lemon of Clinton; three sisters, Mildred Lyles and Josie B. Davis, both of Whitmire and Frances L. Wood of Tryon, N.C. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Leon Sanders

WHITMIRE Leon Sanders, 61, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at his home 135 Hodges Road, Whitmire. Mr. Sanders was born in Newberry County on Aug. 28, 1941 a son of the late Mangle Sr. and Julia Ann Sanders, and was a member of the Men of Aids Lodge #50.

Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Tobe of Newberry; six sisters, Clote Hunter, Ruth (Samuel) Fant of Whitmire; Ella B. Wells, Silla E. (Willie) McCurry of Cleveland, Ohio; Mary Watts, Asheville, N.C.; and Doris Nance of Maryland; three brothers, Mangle (Tomasine) Sanders of Whitmire, and Edward & Lensey of Cleveland, Ohio; three grandchildren; a devoted friend, Cassie Mae Boyd of Whitmire, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, Maybinton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 1-7 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Whitmire. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Penny M. Smith
Union native

INMAN Penny Marie Smith, 41, of 141 Avalon Drive, Inman, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Miss Smith was born in Union on July 15, 1961, a daughter of the late Eugene Smith and Jeannette Stepps Smith.

She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Miss Smith was a graduate of Broome High School and attended Rutledge College. Surviving are two sisters, Lora S. Childress of Boiling Springs and Mary S. Smith of Cowpens; a brother, G.C. Smith of Spartanburg; seven nieces and nephews and one great-nephew. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Betty H. Eubanks
Retired from Monarch Mill

Betty June Henderson Eubanks, 72,of 121 Eubanks St., Union, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Eubanks was born in Union on Dec. 31, 1931, a daughter of the late George and Alice Willard Henderson. She was a member of Union Church of Christ and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan E. and Furman Hill of West Springs and Robin and Walter Whitlock of Union; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kent and Carolyn Eubanks of Augusta, Ga., and Bennie and Barbara Eubanks of Rocky Ford, Ga.; two sisters, Nellie Suttles of West Springs and Paulette Johnson of Trinity, N.C.; nine grandchildren and their spouses,Melissa H. and Adam Maness of West Springs, Dawn H. and Shane Belue, Walter Whitlock Jr. and Rindi Whitlock, all of Jonesville, Misty W. Wade of Union, Angie M. and Ronnie Dubois of Rocky Ford, Ga., Christie E. and Jason Carpenter of Brooklet, Ga., Lynn E. and Jason Hodges of Rocky Ford, Ga., Kent Eubanks II and Kasie of Union, Vickie and Martin Caldwell of Union; two step-grandchildren, Janet Collier and Jerry Eubanks of Millen, Ga.; 12 great-grandchildren, Dawson Maness, Daisy Maness, Kinsleigh Wade, Hayden Whitlock, Kayla Belue, Cody DuBois, Heather DuBois, Justin Hodges, Jordan Hodges, Samantha Carpenter, Dayton and Daytona Caldwell.

Mrs. Eubanks was pre-deceased by a foster son, Marion (Chunky) Garner and four brothers, Otis Henderson, G.W. Henderson, Ralph Henderson and Robert Henderson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Church of Christ by Minister Curtis Gilbert and Minister Jesse Ham Jr. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Clarence Sanders, Barry Ham, David Foster, Kenny Thompson, Scott Ham and Johnny Montgomery. The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Gary Hamm, Don Cudd, Raymond Climer, Paul Ham, Ben Thompson and Kevin Henderson.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Walter Whitlock, 159 Webber Lake Road, Union, Memorials may be made to the Southeastern Children's Home, 115 Children's Way, P.O. Box 339, Duncan, S.C. 29334. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Cecile Estes
Retired from Riverdale Mills

WOODRUFF Cecile Murphy Estes, 92, formerly of 14480 Highway 221, Enoree, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Woodruff Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Estes was born in Union County, a daughter of the late John P. and Lottie Wilburn Murphy. She was the widow of Johnny Bobo Estes. She was retired from Riverdale Mills and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and the Mother's Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Billie Estes of Enoree and Ray and Dot Estes of Simpsonville; one daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and Myles Crocker of Spartanburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Maxie and Mary Murphy of Union; a grandson reared on the home and a granddaughter-in-law, Wayne and Barbara Hennett of Woodruff; six other grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Taylor and the Rev. Andy Parker. Burial will be in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Visitation is tonight from 6-8 at Forest Hills Funeral Home.

The family is at the residence of Wayne and Barbara Hennett, 225 Lakeview Circle, Woodruff. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 521 North McDuffie St., Anderson, S.C. 29621. Forest Hills Funeral Home.
