Funeral services for Mr. Alex E. Thomas will be private. Mr. Thomas, 70, of Prosperity, died Friday, October 29, 2010 at his residence. He is survived by his wife Betty Knechtel Thomas, daughters, Susan Thomas, Karen Stoudemayer, son, Lou Thomas.

Georgia Mary Dwyre

Mrs. Georgia Mary Dwyre, 81, of Aiken, died Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at her residence in Woodside Plantation. Funeral services will be private. South Carolina Cremation & Burial Society, Graniteville, is assisting the family.

A daughter of the late Ernest Bailey and Annette Dufour Bailey, she was born in Ottawa, Ontario Canada on October 23, 1929. She graduated from Sacred Heart College at the University of Ottawa with a degree in Language. She then taught language in countries all around the world wherever her husband, General William R. Dwyre, MD, (US Army, ret.) was stationed. She was a recipient of the American Red Cross Gold Medal and was active in local charities wherever she lived. She was an accomplished artist. Before moving to Aiken four years ago, they had lived at the River Wilderness Country Club, Parrish, FL.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister; Michelle Maillet, Montreal, Canada and a brother; John Bailey, Toronto, Canada and the many friends that she had made around the world.

Harold Glenn Denny

A visitation for Mr. Harold Glenn Denny will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 from 3 to 5 pm at Laurel Baptist Church 2250 Pine St, West Columbia, SC, 29170. South Carolina Cremation & Burial Society honored providers of Veterans Funeral Care is assisting the family.

Mr. Denny, 79, of Columbia, departed this life peacefully on November 4, 2010.

"Denny" retired from the Army after 26 years of service. While in the Army he served in the Vietnam War. He also retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad after 14 years of service.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patsy Ruth Denny, parents, Richard and Beatrice Denny. He is survived by his daughters, Terri Denny, Cora Denny, a stepdaughter Pam Peake, stepsons, Earl Spangler, Timothy Spangler, three grandchildren, Rachel, Tommy, and Devin.

Steven Wilson Russell Bell

Funeral services for Mr. Steven Wilson Russell Bell will be private.

Mr. Bell, 55, of West Columbia, died friday, November 19, 2010 at Lexington Medical Centers.

born in illinois, he was the son of Darrell Russell Bell and Shirley Ann Abbott Bell. He was a Crew Leader at Al's Car Wash.

He is survived by his parents and sister, Tamara Ann Bell.

Mary Glenda Wimpey Watts

Mary Glenda Wimpey Watts, 75, of Columbia passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 after a courageous six year battle with cancer. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, January 28, 2:00 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia, 2701 Heyward Street, Columbia, SC 29205.

Mary was born and raised in Dalton, Georgia and graduated from Whitfield High School. She served in the US Air Force Military Air Transport Service (MATS) from 1956 to 1959 and traveled extensively. She later returned to school and completed her nursing degree at the University of South Carolina. She worked as a nurse at Richland Springs Hospital in Columbia. Mary touched many lives and will be remembered for her sense of humor, determination and spirit of adventure.

Mary was the only child of the late Glenn W. Wimpey and the late Bertha E. Crawford. She is predeceased by her husband, Lindsay Watts of Columbia. Mary will always be remembered by her children Janet Watts and her husband Simon Lewis of Charleston, Theresa Watts and her husband William Bulzoni of Columbia and Brian Watts and his wife Maria of Blythewood as well as her grandchildren, Megan, Zoe, Oliver, Bailey, Nicolas and Sophia.

David Hamlin Tower

COLUMBIA — David Hamlin Tower passed away on January 20, 2012. A long-time resident of Scituate, Mass., he moved with his wife and daughters to Columbia, S.C. in 1995. David attended RETS Electronic School in Boston and Midlands Technical College in Columbia. In Massachusetts, he had worked as a brick mason on Martha’s Vineyard, for Boston Whaler, and at Burkhardt Brothers Moving & Storage. In South Carolina, he was most recently employed as an associate at Siemens Diesel Systems in Blythewood for 11 years.

David was a life-long fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He loved vacationing on Cape Cod and the Outer Banks, and being with his family and Shih Tzu Max. For many years, he enjoyed playing the drums, reading history, and spending time with life-long Massachusetts friends — you know who you are.

David is survived by his wife of 25 years, Michele Moriarty Tower, and their daughters Rebecca and Caroline; and sisters Deb Tower (Rick Wolfert), Leslie Powers (Harold), and Carolyn Kernozicky (Roger). He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Joy Tower.

David will be sorely missed by his many South Carolina relatives, including the families of Berrie Moriarty, Miles and Betty Moriarty, Jim and Teresa Moriarty, Bill and Jeanne McGee, Dan and Jan Burkhardt, and John and Deborah Moriarty.

Gary Thomas Grzanich

Mr. Gary Thomas Grzanich, 71, of Aiken, died Friday, February 3, 2012 at Aiken Regional Medical Center after an illness. Services will be private.

Raymond Cornwell Blakeslee

Raymond Cornwell Blakeslee, 80, of Aiken, died Sunday, February 5, 2012, at Aiken Regional Medical Center after an illness. Arrangements are private.

Hazel McAuliffe

Mrs. Hazel McAuliffe, 84, of North Augusta, died Wednesday, February 8, 2012 after an illness. Services will be private.

Lowell Thomas Leavens

Lowell Thomas (Tommy) Leavens, 75, of Columbia, died Thursday, February 09, 2012 after an illness.

Tommy was born May 10, 1936 in Douglas, Georgia. He was a son of the late George and Janie Adams Leavens. After serving in the US Army during the Korean conflict, Tommy made Columbia, SC his home. He was the owner and operator of Tommy’s Heating and Air. He was married to the late Betty R. Leavens, with whom he spent most of his life with.

Survivors include a daughter, Faye Leavens of Columbia.

His daughter would like to express her deep gratitude to the staff at Rapha Residential Care of Gaston and the Tidewater Hospice for the care and love they provided him.

Mr. Leavens requested private plans which are being handled by South Carolina Cremation and Burial Society, 1910 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Graniteville, SC.

Vivian C. Stichert

Mrs. Vivian C. Stichert, 90, of Aiken, died February 10, 2012 at UPAC- Aiken. Services will be private and are under the direction of SC Cremation & Burial Society, Graniteville.

A daughter of the late Chester Peacock and Bessie Fanning Peacock, she was born in Windsor, SC and was a life long resident of Aiken County. She raised four boys by herself and played an active role in their lives, participating in activities such as mountain climbing, fishing and playing ball. She read her Bible every day and taught her sons to be Christians.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Marvin M. Stichert and three sons, Bobby Stichert, Billy Stichert and Jimmy Stichert.

She is survived by a son, Johnny Stichert, Aiken; a brother, Joe Peacock, Batesburg, SC; a sister, Melba Johnson, Aiken, several grandchildren, including Marty Stichert; many great, grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Douglas Grant Bevard

Mr. Douglas Grant Bevard, 71, of Aiken, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Georgia Health Sciences University. Services will be private and are under the direction of SC Cremation & Burial Society, Granitville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, 401 Wire Rd., Aiken, SC, 29801.

A son of the late Joseph and Ruth Morgan Bevard, he was born in Pittsburgh, PA and grew up in Carnegie, PA. Doug moved to Aiken in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and reading Sci-Fi novels and spending time with family, friends and pets. Doug was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His favorite vacation spot was Long Beach, NC., and he retired from Westinghouse.

Survivors include: his wife, Susan “Sue” Bevard of the home; a daughter, Michele Summers (Terry) of Fishers, Indiana; a son, Nathan Adam Bevard (Cheryl) of Seward, PA; sisters, Diane Bailey of Carnegie, PA., Ruth VonDreau of Monteo, NC., and Beverly Scott of Coraopolis, PA; grandchildren, Jaren & Ethan Summers of Fishers, Indiana; Augie, Michaela and Aleah Bevard of Seward, PA.

William H. Barrett

Mr. William Herbert Barrett, 82, of Aiken, formerly of 153 Sweet Bay Drive, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012, at Aiken Regional Medical Center after an illness. Services will be private and are under the direction of SC Cremation & Burial Society, Graniteville.

A son of the late William J.B. & Gertrude Broomhead Barrett, he was born in Philadelphia, PA, and was retired from B. Braun.

Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Constance Banner Barrett of Aiken; a son, William Barrett of Cartersville, Georgia; a daughter, Barbara Avery of Jacksonville, Florida; a sister, Phyllis Ostman of Loudon, TN; a brother, Richard Barrett of Plano, TX; grandchildren, Sara Jean Barrett of Phoenix, Arizona, Julia Constance Barrett of Austin, Texas William Bradford Barrett, Jr., of Tehachapi, California and Adam Stephen Avery of Jacksonville, Florida.

Dallas LaVerne Stratton

Graveside services for Dallas LaVerne Stratton, 88, of Gaston, will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, February 24, 2012, at Ft. Jackson National cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM at Grace Chapel Church under the care of SC Cremation & Burial Society, Granitville. Officiating will be Rev. Rusty Rabon. The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Stratton, husband of Mrs. Lorene Sparrgrove Stratton, died Thursday, February 16, 2012. born in Poweshiek Co., Iowa, he was a son of the late George Samuel and Gertrude Park Stratton. Mr. Stratton served in the US Navy during WWII, farmed in Iowa, managed a service station in Florida, was a Senior Softball World Series winner, a whitetail deer hunter, and most importantly a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.

Survivors, including his wife of the home are: a son, Dennis L Stratton (Karen) of Gaston; brothers William “Bill” Stratton (Martha) of Denton, Texas and Everett Stratton (Loma) of Jasper, Texas; grandchildren Alissa L. Stratton, Michael S. Stratton (Kandace) both of Lexington, Nathan D. Stratton (Ashley) of Columbia and Amanda L. Hall (Andrew) of Huntersville, NC.; great-grandchildren Noah, Hayli, Ford, Grant, Ashlyn and Bailyn Stratton, and Ashton and Reese Hall.

Elinor Sutphin

Mrs. Elinor P. Sutphin, 76, of Ridgeland, died Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC. Services will be private.

Patricia Ann Peters

Patricia Ann Vezina Peters, 50, of Aiken SC peacefully passed in her sleep at home Saturday morning February 18th 2012. She was born August 10th 1961 in Tacoma WA and graduated first in her class at Augusta Technical College 1985 with an associates degree in electrical engineering then worked at Savannah River Site several years.

She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed the 'Twilight' series Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and was Matchbox 20's biggest fan.

She is survived by:

- Melissa Shae Peters, daughter

- Jo Ann Smith, mother

- Conchita Reichart, grandmother

- Laura Gayle, sister

- Roy Proffitt, father figure

- Ken Peters, companion

Patrick Coward

Swansea, SC – A Burial Requiem for Patrick Kenith Coward, will be held Saturday, Feb. 25th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Irmo, SC. The family will receive friends at a reception at the church following the service. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church building fund, 170 St. Andrews Rd., Columbia, SC 29210 or to the Animal Mission, 127 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29207.

born in Worms, Germany, Patrick was the son of the late (US Army Ret.) SFC Ernest Coward and loving mother Janie Belle Coward. He attended Olympia elementary school in Columbia and graduated from Swansea High School. He found his true calling as a cosmetologist and styled hair for many years until his early retirement. A happy, funny person, Patrick never met a stranger and he loved greatly. He felt love for and was loved in return by the members of St. Mary’s. After a long battle with illness Patrick entered the larger life on Tuesday, he was 51 years old.

Patrick is survived by his life partner of 22 years, Phil Morris, and his brother and sister-in law, Mike and Shawn Coward. Also very dear to his heart were Cathy Odom, Missy Caughman, Clayton Brown, Lisa Waters, Robert Underwood and their extended family as well as the extended family of Don and Eleanor Barton. Beloved animals Sadie and Reggie.

Liesel "Yaya" Moore

A memorial service for all family and friends of Ms. Liesel “Yaya Moore will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 3:30pm at the home of her daughter at 237 Cadle Crossing Rd, Windsor.

Ms. Moore, 84, of Windsor, died Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Anchor Health and Rehab, Aiken.

A daughter of the late Emil Friedrich Muller and Maria Theresia Meder Muller, she was born in Stuttgart, Germany on February 11, 1928 and as a child, had the opportunity to meet Adolph Hitler before leaving for this Country. Known to everyone as “Yaya”, she spent her time in America working as a housekeeper, caregiver, and in numerous restaurants. Although she never had any children of her own, she leaves behind a long list of “adopted” family members that loved her dearly. She touched the hearts of all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Melynda (Tommie) Welch, Windsor; grandchildren, Lyndsey Stephens, Amanda (David) Anderson, Maryann (Chuck) Smith, Crystal (Troy) Harmon, Larry Stephens, Melissa Stephens, Tommie (Summer) Welch, Jr., Michael (Kelly) Welch, Daniel (Andriana) Welch and great grand children, Shawn, Kaitlyn, Cheyenne, Jonathon, Brianna, Joseph, Cameron, Savanna, Jonathon, Olivia, Marshall, Nevaeh and Levi.

Kenneth Leon Engle

Mr. Kenneth Leon Engle, 57, of Aiken, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012 after an illness. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Grace Church and are under the direction of SC Cremation & Burial Society, Graniteville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made for M'Baiki student housing in Central African Republic. Please make checks to Grace Church of Aiken and mail to 144 Talatha Church Road, Aiken, SC 29803 and designate for Africa/Ken Engle Memorial.

A son of the late Walter and Virginia Hinz Engle, he was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, and was a retired Building Inspector and Plans Reviewer with the Aiken County Planning and Development Department. Mr. Engle was a member of Grace Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lois Arrington Engle of the home; daughters, Laura David (Romeo) of Lexington, Karen Pan (Bob) of Jacksonville, Florida and Lisa Engle also of Jacksonville, Florida; sons, Brian Engle (Becky) of Dallas, Texas and Craig Engle (Rachel) of Greenville, SC; brothers, Dallas Engle (Joyce) of Ephrata, PA, Darrell Engle (Dianne) of Aiken and Kevin Engle (Charline) of Wooster; a sister, Dolores Rast (Robert) of South Bend, Indiana; and grandsons, Matthew Kenneth David and Charles Edward Engle.

Catherine Shelley

Catherine Shelley, 98, of Greenwood, died Monday, July 2, 2012 at Self Regional Medical Center following an illness. Services will be private.

Henry C. Lowrey, III

Henry Clay Lowrey, III, 75, of Lexington, died Tuesday, July 03, 2012.

Mr. Lowrey was born in Miami, Florida. Having spent 40 years in the central Florida area, he moved to South Carolina in 2010. He was a retired banker and business owner. Henry was a church elder and loved his church families at Winter Park Presbyterian and Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church. He was a longtime Rotarian, golfer and pilot and had a passion for sports and Big Band and Jazz music.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Lowrey; daughter, Shawna Lowrey Jackson and son-in-law, Fred Jackson; granddaughter, Emily Jackson and grandson Trevor Jackson all of Lexington; sisters, Martha Jean Roquemore and Illean O’Rourke of Georgia; brother, Edward Lowrey of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church (Adult Education), 5503 Sunset Blvd., Lexington, SC 29072.

Elizabeth Christensen

Mrs. Elizabeth Christensen, 106, of Aiken, died Monday, July 9, 2012 at Anchor Health and Rehab, Aiken. Services are private and under the direction of SC Cremation & Burial Society, Graniteville.

A daughter of the late Simon Neilsen and Hansine Sorensen Neilsen, she was born in Aarhus, Denmark and came to The United States in 1926 and had lived in Nutley, NJ before moving to Aiken nine years ago.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jens Christensen.

She is survived by three daughters, Alice Pully, Boca Raton, FL and Manahawkin, NJ Evelyn Riggins, Aiken, SC and Betty Jonas, Manchester, NJ seven grandchildren, Jim, Carol, Tom, Michael, Robert, Julie and Ken; two step-grandchildren, Craig & Andra; thirteen great grandchildren, Adam, Christopher, Kyle, Thomas, Mathew, Elizabeth, Marcus, Jarod, Annamea, Grace, Jacob, Victoria and Travis; three step great-grandchildren, Kelly, Regina and Beth and four step, great grandchildren, Audrey, Tristen, Kelly Gene and Alexis.
