Mrs. Mary Ross Anderson

FLORENCE -- Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Ross Anderson will be conducted 2:30 Sunday, January 6, 2002 in the Ideal Funeral Parlor Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. She died on January 3, 2002.

born in Florence, SC, she was the daughter of Ed Ross and Julia Hines Ross. She attended the public schools of Florence, SC and was a member of Maxwell Baptist Church.

Survivors are: one son, Ernest Anderson, adopted son, Johnny (Patrice) Brown; grandchildren, Jonathan and Heather Brown; two sisters, Virginia Brown, Elizabeth Alexander; two brothers, Dea. Melvin (Lillie) Ross, Dea. Lawrence Ross; adopted family, Dr. Vera Hyman, Dr. Peter Hyman, Martha Hyman and Helen Hyman.

Mary 'Mame' McCall Bacote

SOCIETY HILL -- Funeral service for Mrs. Mary "Mame" McCall Bacote will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 in Bethesda Baptist Church with Rev. Byron Wilson, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc. of Darlington.

Mrs. Bacote died on Friday, Jan. 4 in a Hartsville hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington County, a daughter of the late Walter and Olivia Coleman McCall.

She attended Darlington County public schools. Mrs. Bacote was a faithful member of Bethesda Baptist Church, where she served as an Usher, Deaconess, Missionary Society, Senior Choir and What I Can Club. She was also a member of the O.E.S. Triumph Chapter #128.

Survivors are her loving family; son Alfred E. Bacote of Greenbelt, Md.; a brother, Andrew (Cathrine) McCall of Darlington; five grandchildren, Maceo Bacote, Timothy Bacote, Clarence Bacote, Alfreda Bacote and Freda Johnson, all of Maryland; seven great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law; several nieces and nephews.

Wake services will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of James E. Bacote of 713 Rosenwald Street, Society Hill.

Jane Walpole Melton

FLORENCE -- Jane Walpole Melton, 74, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at her residence after an illness.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 in All Saints Episcopal Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at her residence.

She was born in Beaufort County, a daughter of the late Leroy Walpole and Hazel Varn Walpole. She was graduated from Limestone College and was a music teacher in public and private schools.

She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, where she was the first church organist. She also was a member of the Junior Welfare League.

Mrs. Melton was the widow of Ted Melton.

Survivors include a daughter, Hazel (Larry) Norton of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Edward (Jeanne) Melton of Florence and Richard Melton of Lake City; and five grandchildren.

Memorial may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 1425 Cherokee Road, Florence, SC 29501; or to Hospice of the Pee Dee, Hospice House, 555, E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

John Mark Webb

LAKE CITY -- Mr. John Mark Webb, 38, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, from injuries he received in an accident.

Mr. Webb was born in Columbus, Ga., a son of James Webb and Catherine Phillips Ward. He was a carpenter.

Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Hilton and Brittney Webb, both of Lake City; his mother, Catherine Phillips Ward of Talbotton, Ga.; his father, James Webb of Florence; three brothers, Billy Webb of Florence, James Webb Jr. of Phenix City, Ala., and Wayne Webb of Talbotton, Ga.; a sister, Kathy Welch of Columbus, Ga.; his fiancee', Becky Hilton of Lake City; two stepsons, Ervin Hilton of Summerville and Lewis Hilton of Pamram, Ohio; his grandmother, Leola Braxton of Lake City; a grandson, Tyler Powell of Lake City; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 in McGee cemetery in Coward.

The family will have visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

William John Thompson

GOOSE CREEK -- William John Thompson, 80, of Goose Creek, formerly of Florence, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. Thompson was born in Camden, N.J., a son of the late William John Thompson Sr. and Carrie Mae Lloyd Thompson. He was a retired piano technician, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of Goose Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Fields Thompson, who died in 1972.

Surviving are his wife, Violet R. Thompson of Charleston; a daughter, Dawn (Scott) Jones of Florence; a step-son, Ervin Revell of Tennessee; three stepdaughters, Vanessa Oswald of Charleston, Brenda Mack of Corpus Christi, Texas and June Mundy of Augusta, Ga.; a grandson, Phillip Jones, and a granddaughter, Nicole Jones, both of Florence; a number of step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mike and Cheryl Tayara, 2443 S. Hallmark Drive, Florence.

Madeline DuBose

DARLINGTON -- Madeline Goodson DuBose, 59, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Graveside funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 in Lamar cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. DuBose was born in Greenville, daughter of the late James N. and Catherine Fields Goodson Sr., was married to the late Glenn DuBose Jr. She was employed by the Darlington County Voters Registration Board and was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Scott (Terri) DuBose and Lee (Tina) DuBose, both of Darlington; a daughter, Peggy D. Stokes also of Darlington; four grandchildren, Langley Scott DuBose, Cody Glenn DuBose, Joshua Daniel Stokes and Jessica Rene Stokes; two sisters, Mary Randy (Betty Jean) Bryant and Mrs. George (Barbara) Tisdale, both of Darlington; and a brother, Jimmy (Joy) Goodson, also of Darlington.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Bryant, 600 Heathwood Drive, Darlington.

Memorials are suggested to Central Baptist Church, 512 Spring St., Darlington, SC 29532.

Zeno Tharp Smith

LAURENS -- Zeno Tharp Smith, age 71, of 1566 Fleming Mill Road, died Sunday, Jan. 13 in the Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood.

He was born in Fairforest, and was a son of the late Rev. W. Frank Smith and Lalla Jones Smith.

Mr. Smith was a retired MSgt with the United States Marines Corp, serving his country during the Korean Conflict and three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was also retired from the 3M Company in Greenville and was an active member of the Laurens Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Hanvey Smith of the home; one daughter Janice Stroud and her husband Tom of Laurens; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Josh and Justin Stroud, all of Laurens; his stepmother, Louise Smith Durham of Laurens; two sisters, Ruby Smith Ross of Seneca and Billie Smith Bennett of Florence.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Smith Jr. and Bordie Smith; and one sister, Lois Smith.

Mr. Smith is also survived by a close family of brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 in the Laurens Church of God with burial in the Forest Lawn cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Laurens Church of God Building Fund, 908 N. Harper St., Laurens, S.C. 29360.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be directed by Gray Funeral Home of Laurens.

Ruby Davis Suggs Plyler

DARLINGTON -- Mrs. Ruby Davis Suggs Plyler, 83, of Darlington died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 in a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17 at 3 PM in the Indian Branch United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Indian Branch cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Plyler was born in Darlington County and was the daughter of the late Kenneth Alvin and Eva Hill Davis. She was a member of the Indian Branch United Methodist Church and Lottie McSwain Sunday School Class. Mrs. Plyler was retired form James Rivers, Inc. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful mother, grandmother and wife. Mrs. Plyler also enjoyed fishing.

Mrs. Plyler was preceded in death by her first husband, Dossie Suggs, in 1964 and her second husband Hugh Plyler in 2000.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth (Barbara) Suggs of Darlington; two daughters, Bobbie (Billie) James of Columbia and Bonnie (Glenn) Best of Sumter; one step-son, Jerry (Debbie) Plyler of Hartsville; one step-daughter, Jean (Walter) Hartis of Hartsville; one sister, Claudia D. Odom of Darlington; twenty-eight grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 16 from 5-7 PM at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home in Darlington.

Memorials are requested to be made to the Indian Branch UMC Building Fund, C/O Cecil James, P.O. Box 224, Darlington, SC, 29540.

Deacon Leverne Washington Sr.

FLORENCE -- Funeral services for Deacon Leverne Washington Sr. will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Majority Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Sansbury cemetery, directed by Peoples Funeral Service of Florence.

Deacon Washington died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002.

He was born in Florence County, a son of the late Loren and Julia Brown Washington. He attended the public schools of Florence County. He was ordained as a Deacon in the Antioch Baptist Church. In 1961, he joined the Majority Baptist Church where he served faithfully as chairman of the Deacon Board, president of the Senior Choir and Church Custodian for many years. He also was affiliated with several gospel singing groups.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mrs. Eddie Ruth Stevenson Washington; a daughter, Brenda (Ernest) Addison; a son, Leverne Washington Jr.; a brother, Otis Washington of Baltimore; two sisters, Retha Bines of Timmonsville and Calpertia Clavon of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a host of other loving family and friends.

Leroy 'Roy' Evans

FLORENCE -- Leroy "Roy" Evans, 82, died Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at Commander Nursing Center. born March 18, 1919, in Florence County, SC, he was the son of the late Vince Evans and Annie Taylor Evans, and was the husband of the late Millie Ball Evans.

Mr. Evans attended Lake City Church of God and retired form Tupperware.

He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Moss, of Pamplico; two stepsons, Bobbie Jones of Pamplico, and L.Z. Worley of Lindale, NC; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be January 19, 2002, at 11:00am in Woodside cemetery in Pamplico, SC, with visitation to follow. The Family will be at the Residence, 1484 Hosea Gibbs Rd., Pamplico.

Funeral services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.

Susie H. Simon

BISHOPVILLE -- Susie H. Simon died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002 at Regency Hospital in Florence. born in Lee County, Oct. 8, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Benny Henry and Lula Bradley Henry.

She attended the public schools of Lee County. She was a member of Church of the Apostolic Faith, Hartsville.

Surviving are her husband, Roland Simon; a son, Benny Simon and his wife, Virginia, of Lamar; three daughters, Mary Lee Simon and Rosa Belle Simon, both of Bishopville, and Ella Ree Ham and her husband, Joe, of Florence; a brother, John Henry of New York; 19 grandchildren; and 23 grandchildren.

A wake service was from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Church of the Apostolic Faith with Elder J.C. Tisdale officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
