Wonice B. Sawyer

NICHOLS -- Mrs. Wonice Baker Sawyer, 68, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with Rev. Rick Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Freewill Baptist Church cemetery directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sawyer was born June 5, 1933 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Zander and Emma Collins Baker. Mrs. Sawyer was a beautician and a member of Nichols Baptist Church.

Mrs. Sawyer was married to the late Carl Sawyer.

Surviving Mrs. Sawyer are three sons, Donald Ray Turner, Robert Turner and Randy Sawyer, all of Nichols; a daughter, Wanda Thompkins of Nichols; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Baker of Conway.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, S.C. 29501.

Dorcius Mary Westbrook Waters

FLORENCE -- Dorcius Mary Westbrook Waters, 76, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at her residence after an illness.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001 at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Waters was born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., a daughter of the late James A. and Virgie Britton Westbrook. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Admiral Dewey Waters Jr. of Florence; a son, Admiral Dewey Waters III of Irmo; two daughters, Mary Arleen Waters of Florence and Eva Deloris Coleman of Dillon; a granddaughter, Brandy Marie Wallace and three grandsons, Admiral Dewey Water IV, Dustin Ray Coleman and Dakota Rio Coleman; a great granddaughter, Abigail L. Wallace; a brother, James A. Westbrook II of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and a sister Josephine Simms of Liberty, N.C.

Carroll W. Hatchell

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Carroll W. Hatchell, 78, born in Florence County, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Williamsburg, Va. He was a resident on the VA Peninsula since Dec. 1952.

Mr. Hatchell retired from NNSY in 1979 where he was employed in the Shipwright and Sheet Metal Depts. He was member of First United Methodist Church in Newport News. He coached Little League Baseball at the Warwick Moose Lodge. He also helped form the Exployer Unit of Boy Scout Troop #43, and was instrumental in getting their sponsorship by Christ United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed many hours in the mountains with good friend, George Jacobson Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George William and Hattie Farmer Hatchell. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Jeffords Hatchell; two sons, George A. Hatchell and his wife, Sabina of Midlothian, Va. and Thomas C. Hatchell of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, George Jr., Michele, Shane, and William Henry (Hank) Hatchell; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Nora Lee Rose, Georgia Mae West, Sybil Stewart, all of Florence; sisters-in-law, Inez Hatchell of Florence, Helen Barham of Columbia, Ann Patterson of Ladson; brothers-in-law, Warren I. Jeffords of Houston, Texas and Thomas H. Jeffords of Newport News; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Weymouth Funeral Home chapel conducted by the Rev. Marvin White. The family received friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 5349 E. Princess Anne Rd., Norfolk, Va. 23502 or The York County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 532, Yorktown, Va. 23690.

David George Butler

FLORENCE -- David George Butler, 64, of Florence, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001. born May 25, 1937, in Lexington County, he was the son of the late Albert George Butler and Alma Braswell Butler. He was the husband of Dianne Ross Butler.

Mr. Butler was the former owner and operator of Butler Pest Control in Marietta, Ga. He was employed with Pizza Hut of Florence for 14 years and was of the Presbyterian Faith.

In addition to his wife, Dianne, he is survived by two sons, Darrell Keith Butler and his wife, Cindy, of Smyrna, Ga. and Robert Lee Underwood and his wife, Kailon, of Pamplico; two daughters, Kay Butler Hallahan and her husband, John, of Powder Springs, Ga. and Kim Benton of Ringgold, Ga.; a brother, John Butler of Clermont, Florida; and two sisters, Janie Fisk of Lexington and Ellen Butler of Smyrna, Ga. Also surviving are seven grandchildren. Preceding him in death is a son, Carl Underwood, two sisters and a brother.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Cain-Poston Funeral Home.

Services will be 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in the Cain-Poston Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Mount Hope cemetery.

Funeral services are being directed by Cain-Poston Funeral Home.

Joyce Elvington Russell

FLORENCE -- Joyce Elvington Russell, 73, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001 in a local hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1 in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Florence National cemetery.

Mrs. Russell was born in Lake View, a daughter of the late Lawrence C. and Eva Rogers Elvington. She was the widow of John Seth Russell who died in 1987.

Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Adams of Florence and Brenda Leonard of Syracuse, N.Y.; two sons, Michael S. Russell of Florence and Lawrence C. Russell of Plano, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Sada Kate Rogers and Mrs. Sylva Suggs, both of Lake View; a brother, Earl B. Elvington of Florence; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Dawson Barnwell Windham

PAMPLICO -- Dawson Barnwell Windham, 85, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 in a Florence hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Windham was born in Florence County, a son of the late Josey Mann and Mary Elizabeth Shepard Windham. He was a retired farmer, a member of Black Oak Hunting Club and attended Christian Fellowship.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Poston Windham of Pamplico; a daughter, Harriett (Jimmy) Graham of Lake City; three sons, Ronnie (Sue) Windham and Randy Windham, both of Pamplico, and Jerold Windham of Charleston; a sister, Louise W. Smithey of Scranton; three brothers, Roy (Ann) Windham of Timmonsville, Cecil Windham of Florence and Lewis (Marie) Windham of Marion; 10 grandchildren, Karen (Russell) McClary of Kingstree, Dean (Becky) Windham of Scranton, Brad (Lisa) Windham of Charleston, Wanda (Donnie) Springs of Scranton, Cindy (Jim) Hatcher of Cleveland, Ga., Patty (Michael) Brown of Lake City, Sandra (Don) Gaskins of Hartsville, Kristi (Mike) Provau of Pamplico, Marty Windham of Pamplico and Glenda Windham of Charlotte, N.C.; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Windham was predeceased by a grandson, Scott Windham; a brother, Gene Windham; and two sisters, Ruth Windham and Elizabeth Barnes.

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today in Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in Riverside cemetery, Pamplico.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1996 W. Highway 378, Pamplico, S.C. 29583.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Jackie English

DILLON -- Services for Edgar Jackie English will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Evergreen cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Mr. English, 57, died Wednesday, Sept. 26.

born in Marlboro County, Sept. 8, 1944, he was the son of the late Delton English and Geraldine Wells English. He was a foreman with Crawford Sprinkler Company in Myrtle Beach for 40 years, a member of East Dillon Baptist Church and a member of the Lower Pee Dee Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Lynn Harrelson English of Dillon; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Michael Linker of Dillon and Kimberly and Jason Herring of Ft. Lewis, Wash.; sister, Lois Jeanette Baysinger of Morton, Ill.; brothers, William T. English of Latta and Mackie H. English of Dillon; and grandchildren, Brandon and Kristen Huggins and Jason Herring Jr.

Mr. English was preceded in death by his son, Jackie Keith English.

Daniel Bennett

FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Daniel "Tacker Man" Bennett will be conducted 1 p.m. on Tuesday at House of Prayer, 609 Oakland Avenue, Florence. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery. He died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in the VA Hospital in Columbia.

born in Florence County, he was a son of John Luther and Cecelia Burroughs Bennett. He attended the public schools of Florence County and was a 1966 graduate of Wilson High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Surviving besides his mother are two sons, Terrence Timmons Bennett and Gerard Bennett; brother, Oliver Wendell (Brenda) Bennett; four sisters, Bona (Steve) Gilliam, Clara (Solomon) Moses, Joan (Frank) Moses, Jeanette B. "Flo" Spears; one grandson; soul mate Cheryl Washington.

Family is receiving friends at 808 Kershaw Street. Condolence and memorial messages may be mailed to Ideal Funeral Parlor, 1005 E. Cheves Street, Florence, 29506.

Queenie Godbold J. Lockhart

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queenie Godbold J. Lockhart 81, of Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 at her home, 1512 Newcastle St.

Mrs. Lockhart was born on Oct. 5, 1920 in Gresham, the daughter of the late Andrew and Ruby Godbold. She was a graduate of Mullins High School, and attended Morris College, Sumter. She worked as an associate teacher, and later became a principal in the Marion County School System. As a youth, she was converted, baptized and joined White Will Missionary Baptist Church in Gresham, where she served diligently until she moved to Charlotte, N.C.

After moving to Charlotte, she joined the Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where she had been active, dedicated and supportive member for more than 50 years. Her influence was left first as she began teaching the young adult class in 1952, then the adult class No. 3, until her death. She served for more than 45 years as church clerk, beginning in 1955 to present. She was a member of the Board of Trustees since 1976, and was also a member of the Young at Hearts, Matrons Missionary Group, The Prayer Partners, The Store House, Finance Committee and the Mecklenburg General Baptist Church Association.

She was married to J.C. Jones, who preceded her in death, then to Joseph Lockhart, who also preceded her in death. Her hobbies were fishing and growing flowers. Her motto and philosophy was, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She retired from Delmar Studios after more than 40 years of dedicated service.

Mrs. Lockhart is survived by a special cousin, Macy Gasque of Gresham; stepmother, Mrs. Daisy Godbold of Marion; niece, Regina (Joe) Martin of Warrenton, N.C.; foster son, Thomas (Marie) Lockhart of Columbia; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Godbold of Columbia and Barbara Lockhart of Charlotte, N.C.; cousins, Lillie Hill of Charleston, Vivian Richardson of Gresham, Liza Fleming of Plainfield, N.J., and several other supportive and caring cousins, nieces, nephews, caring neighbors and friends.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church located at 1243 West Blvd., Charlotte, N.C. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Services are entrusted to Alexander Funeral Home, 1424 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, N.C.

Winnifred Mae Hyman

PAMPLICO -- Winnifred Mae Hyman, 84, of Pamplico, SC, died early Monday morning, Oct. 8, 2001, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Lottie Hyman, 920 Bass Road, Pamplico, SC.

Miss Hyman was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Ernest C. and Essel Poston Hyman. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the Women's #2 Sunday School Class. She was a former Children's Sunday School Teacher. She retired in 1992 from Commander Nursing Center. She was an avid gardner and loved sewing.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl W. Hyman, who died on Dec. 21, 2001.

Surviving are a sister, Rosa Lee Hyman of Pamplico; a brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Ruth Hyman of Pamplico; a sister-in-law, Lottie Hyman of Pamplico; and a number of special nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, 1883 Pamplico, Hwy., Pamplico, SC 29583.

William Purley Stuckey

JOHNSONVILLE -- Funeral service for Mr. William Purley Stuckey will be 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at St. Mark A.M.E. Church Johnsonville. Burial in the St. Mark cemetery. Directed by Moses Funeral Home of Pamplico.

Mr. Stuckey died Monday, Sept. 17 in a Florence hospital after an illness. He was born in Florence County the son of the late Isaiah and Lillie Scott Stuckey.

Mr. Stuckey attended the Florence County public Schools and member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church. He retired from Florence Concrete Inc. of Florence. Mr. Stuckey the widowed of the late Ruth Woodberry Stuckey.

Survivors are five daughters Dr. Lillie (Preston) Robinson, Hermenia (Walter) McCray, Annie Ruth Eaddy, Ruby Mae Robinson all of Florence, Elizabeth Bardon of Johnsonville; two sons, James (Bertha) Stuckey of Johnsonville, John Wesley (Ella) Stuckey of Florence; a son in law Nelson Bardon of Plainfield, N.J.; a brother, Joe (Ethel) Stuckey of New York; a sister, Sarah Gainey of Pamplico; one aunt; one brother in law; four sisters in law; 26 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren; two great great grands.

The family will receive friends at the home today 7-8 p.m.
