Fields, James A. "Rugged", age 87, of South Knoxville, passed away Friday, November 29, 2002 at UT Hospital. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He retired from Swift Packing Company. Veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. He is survived by loving and adored wife Ruth Anna Fields who he married on July 3, 1940; sons Jerry, Butch, Bobby and Mike; daughters Barbara, Sandy, Kathy, and Ruthie; 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; sisters Audrie, Phyllis, and Barbara; several sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Baptist Church with Dr. George Hollander officiating. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with full military honors by East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 PM Tuesday at Immanuel Baptist Church. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

John Delmar Woods

Woods, John Delmar, age 72 of South Knoxville, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2002 at Hillcrest West Nursing Home. He was retired and former co-owner of Smalls Drive-In in Athens, Tennessee. He served in the United States Navy where he was awarded the Good Conduct Korean Service, China Service and United Nations Service Medals. Preceded in death by parents, Delmar and Myrtle Woods and sister, Genell Johnson. Wife of 47 years, Effie Woods; sister, Joyce Allen of Georgia; devoted brothers, Robert "Bill" Woods and wife, Betty of Knoxville and Ron Woods and wife, Lorna of Nashville; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Family and friends will meet 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery for graveside services. Memorials may be made to The Kidney Foundation, 4450 Walker Boulevard, Suite 2, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Birgie Leona Whaley Manning

Birgie Leona Whaley Manning, age 95 of Sevierville, died Thursday, November 28, 2002 at Fort Sanders-Sevier Nursing Home. She was born in 1907 in Greenbriar, now part of the National Park, and was a member of the Big Greenbriar Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie E. Manning, son, Lee Roy Manning, daughter-in-law, May Dodgen Manning and her parents Eb and Cordia Whaley. Survivors: Sons and Daughters-in-law: Ernest Manning of Titusville, Florida Sam and Esther Manning of Pittman Center Lawrence and Nina Manning Jim and Joan Manning Daughter and Son-in-law: Mary and John Eakin all of Sevierville Daughter-in-law: Rebecca Manning of Gatlinburg 16 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren, 5 Great-Great Grandchildren Sister: Elmina Suttle of Knoxville Funeral service 7 PM Saturday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. James Suttle and Elder Zenith Whaley officiating. Interment 2 PM Sunday in Pigeon Forge Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Saturday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

Wanda Maye Morgan Black

Wanda Maye Morgan Black, age 65, of Dandridge died Saturday, November 30, 2002. She was a member of Deep Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Morgan, and parents, Frances and Lee Morgan Survivors: Husband: Kenneth E. Funeral service 2:30 PM Tuesday, in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Haase officiating, Interment will follow in the Fain Cemetery. Ben Whitted, and Rev. Melvin Carr officiating. Family and friends will meet 1 PM Wednesday at Owens Cemetery in Mountain City, TN for interment. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Tuesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

He was an active member and deacon at New Hopewell Baptist Church. After working many years for AT&T;, he left to open his own business, WRT Hydraulics. his wife, Vicky S. Browning; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Victor Galyon; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Lisa Browning and Russell and Lori Browning; grandchildren, Katie and Allie Galyon, Josh Browning, and Nate Lawrence; parents, Eula and Ernest Browning; sisters, Doris Jean Johnson, Linda Richey, and Gail Davis; brothers, Steve Browning, Bill Browning, and Mark Browning; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at New Hopewell Baptist Church, 943 Kimberlin Heights Road, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Cory Golden officiating. Family and friends will meet Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. interment service. Pallbearers will be Steve Browning, Bill Browning, Mark Browning, Raymond Boling, Clifford Boling, and Jerry Brogdon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the New Hopewell Baptist Church Building Fund. Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, in charge of arrangements.

Survivors: Wife: Willie Ruth Compton Robeson Sons: David, Dickie, and Travis Daughters: Lana and Bobbie 6 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren Sisters: Laura Belle, Deloris, and Jean Brother: Tommy Several nieces and nephews Special friend: Cobb Clifton Family and friends will meet 2 PM Sunday at Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens for graveside service and interment with military honors. The family will receive friends 6-9 PM Saturday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
