He retired from Roadway Express with 27 years of service; and a WW11 Veteran. Survivors include wife, Ima P. Bentley; daughters and sons-in-laws, Doris and Jim Rucker of Hamilton, Ohio, and Judy and Alton Terry of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Melissa Meyer, James W., Mike, and Kristin Rucker, Stephanie, Anthony, and Stephen Terry; 6 great grandchildren, Amanda, Heather, and Meg Meyer, Josh and Kinsey Rucker, Tabitha and Savannah Rucker, and Marriah Terry; sister, Bertie King; and several nieces and nephews. Donald Frank Kasten

Donald Frank Kasten, age 86 of Sevierville, passed away Monday, October 07, 2002. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Fort Pierce, FL Chapter. He was maintenance supervisor for the St. Lucie County School Board in Florida and the Sevier County School Board. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank C. and Tillie Schubert Kasten, and brother, Walter. Survivors: Wife of 64 years: Lucille M. Kasten Daughter: Maryellen Kasten Brother: Leo Karl (Al) Kasten and wife Madelon Ivey Kasten and sons, Chris and Marc of Ft. Pierce, FL Family and friends will meet 10 AM Thursday at Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens in Pigeon Forge for graveside service and interment. Rev. Ray E. Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Wednesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Mary’s Hospice, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville,TN 37938.

Charles ''Tom'' Cagle

Charles “Tom” Cagle, age 36, passed away Sunday October 6, 2002 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A graduate of Sevier County High School and member of New Hope Church of God. He was active in Charity events, a favorite of which was Smoky Mountain Children Home. Tom was owner of Ol’ Smoky Discount Tobacco Stores and former partner in Sevier County Bonding Company. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Cagle, grandparents, Charlie and Beulah Cagle, Tom and Hazel Hill. Survivors: Son: Bryer Cagle Mother: Joline “Jodie” Cagle Sister and Brother-in-law: Robin and Jeff Long Nephews: Kenny and Marcus De Hart Aunts: Charlene Allison, Jean and John Law Uncles: Bruce and Wanda Hill, Don and Jeana Hill Special friends: Laura Slaughter And a host of friends and cousins Tom was a great and wonderful father, son, brother, and friend and will be so sadly missed by all who knew him. She was preceded in death by parents, Clarence V. & Ethel Mary Latham; daughter, Debra Chodan; brothers Clarence V. Latham Jr. and Paul R. Latham; sister, Bertha Martin. Her husband Fred L. Brown; daughters and sons-in-law: Carolyn and Gary Smith of Pennsylvania; Nancy Lynn and Joe Bogner of Knoxville; Susan and Tommy Arwood of Seymour; LouAnn & Brandon Childress of Knoxville; sons and daughters-in-law: Steven and Sharon Brown of Michigan; Jason and Kerri Brown of South Carolina; grandchildren: Brandon Childress; Anne Marie Bradford; Kevin and Justin Arwood; Ben, Mike, and Tim Chodan; Rachel, Julia, Sarah, Paul, and Stephen Brown; Johnny, Christy, and Rachel Smith Jordan; and Austin Childress. sister, Juanita Fleck; brothers and sisters-in-law: Roy and Pat Latham, Dave and Betty Latham of Knoxville; Gary and Cindy Latham of Clyde, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 9, 2002 in the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway with Pastor Steve Brown and Pastor Len McElyea officiating. She was a devoted Christian and a member of The Father’s House in Pigeon Forge and was retired from nursing. She served her profession and friends with love and compassion. She was preceded in death by her husband Willie Hudson Humphres, Sr., and sons David Lee Humphres and Willie Hudson (Butch) Humphres, Jr. ; parents Jess Willard and Lillian (Parton) Ogle; brother Burls Ogle. Retha Virginia Bailey Allen

Born in Bentonville, VA she settled in Hampton with her husband in 1956 after he retired from the Air Force. Mrs. Allen was a member of Worsham Baptist Church and lived her life as a Christian woman dedicated to taking care of her family. Mattie Mai Carr

Mattie Mai Carr, age 91 of Sevierville, TN died peacefully Tuesday, October 1, 2002, after a lengthy illness. A longtime Sevier County resident, she was born Mattie Mai Byrne in the Middle Tennessee Granville Community on July 7, 1911. She was married to the late Joe Franklin Carr of Hartsville, Tennessee, for 67 years. Together they were prominent in the Sevierville business community forming Carr Dry Goods. In addition to helping with the store and several of their hotels, Mrs. Carr was a school teacher in the Underwood and Sevierville communities. Mrs. Carr was one of the founders of Sevierville Church of Christ, of which she remained a faithful member. Besides contributions to her community, she was a most gracious lady and devoted to her family of which she was most proud. Survivors: Daughter: Mary Kay Carr Pruitt, Nashville, TN Granddaughter: Penny Paulette and Ronnie Flippo, Columbia, TN Great granddaughter: Kaitlin Michelle Flippo, Columbia, TN Brothers and Sisters-in-law: John and Marianne Byrne, Hendersonville, TN; Herman and Ruth Byrne, Sevierville, TN Many nieces and nephews Funeral service 11 AM Friday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home. He served during World War II, Korean and Vietnam conflicts and was awarded Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation as well as other recognitions.
