He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Virgie Roberts; brother, Clyde Roberts; nephew, Larry Roberts. Survivors: Wife: Ola Mae Hurst Roberts Children: Greg Roberts and wife Susan, Todd Roberts, Villie Roberts, Vann Roberts Grandchildren: Daniel, Benjamin, and Rachel Roberts Brothers and Sister-in-law: Butler D. and Jean Evelyn Roberts, James Ralph Roberts Sister-in-law: Ruby O. Roberts Several nieces and nephews Funeral service 7 PM Tuesday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Hyder and Dr. David Ayers officiating. Interment 10 AM Wednesday in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Tuesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. Milton Hatfield

Hatfield, Milton E., age 91, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, July 8, 2002 at his home. He was a member of Vestal United Methodist Church and was retired from Robertshaw. He was a former secretary at Moose Lodge #1560. He was also a professional boxer and a musician, former little league coach and an umpire for TSSAA. Wife, Lillie Doyle Hatfield; children: Gary Hatfield and wife, Sharon; Carl Hatfield and wife, Renee; Peggy Williams and husband, Tom; 7 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Graveside service Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Clyde Mitchell Layman

Clyde Mitchell Layman, 86, of Sevierville died peacefully at his home, 2920 E. 5th Avenue, Knoxville at 10:35 AM, Tuesday, July 2, 2002 with devoted caregivers Ed and Judy Layman at his side. He retired from ALCOA after 39 years of service. He was saved at an early age and was a member of Cedar Bluff Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Lee McMahan Layman; parents Nina Patterson and James Lemley Layman. Survivors: Son and daughter-in-law: Ed and Judy Layman Grandson: Greg Layman and wife, Donna Granddaughter: Sheryl Lee Layman Great-granddaughter: Shelby Leigh Layman Sister: Imogene Layman Morgan Half-sister: Thelma Truelove of Georgia Special friend: Victor DeLeon and wife, Diane Graveside service and interment 5 PM Wednesday at Cummings Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers: Kenneth Carr, Victor DeLeon, J.B. Leatherwood, Scott Walker, Ken Garner, Mayford Ramsey, and Donald McMahan. Friends may call at their convenience 12 Noon – 4:30 PM Wednesday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

Evelyn Paschal Owens

Owens, Evelyn Paschal, age 86, formerly of Knoxville, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in Johnson City after a brief illness. Mrs. Owens was a member of Broadway Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she taught 5 year-olds for many of those years. Before moving to Johnson City in 1999, she was a member of Meridian Baptist Church. Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Owens. Daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Chuck Minton of Johnson City; son, Keith Owens of Nashville; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, James, Jr. and Casey Moorleghen; granddaughter, Shannon Moorleghen; great-grandsons, Prather and Adam Moorleghen, all of Johnson City; niece and nephew, Marion and Ray Laugherty of Knoxville; sister-in-law, Margaret Owens of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews, family and friends. Services will be held at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, Saturday, July 6, 2002, with receiving of friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. and funeral following at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Jim Lennon will officiate. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association of your choice. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home.

Long; sister-in-law, Pauline Long; nieces and nephews and friend, Betty Black. Family and friends will meet for a 1:00 p.m. graveside service on Saturday at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Blount County, with Dr. George Hollander officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

He was a member of Community Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents, William Thomas and Ola Mae Scott Jolly; sister, Mary Elizabeth Jolly; brothers, William Jolly, Jr. and Benjamin Jolly. Loving and devoted wife, Elizabeth Jolly; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Roger Hall; 2 step daughters, Gracie Webb and Stacy Brannon; step son, Willard Russell; 5 grandchildren; brother, Ronald Jolly; several nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends; his boy, Bill Webb. Funeral service Wednesday 8:00 p.m., Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Tom King officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday at Grandview Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. interment service. Pallbearers will be: Tim Jolly, Tony Jolly, Dwayne Jolly, Bill Jolly, Larry Jolly, Willard Russell, Bill Webb and Roger Hall. Lloyd E. Cannon

Lloyd E. Cannon, age 88 of Knoxville, went to be with the lord July 5, 2002 at National Health Care Center Fort Sanders after a long illness. He was General Manager of Deane Hill Country Club for 35 years. He was a wounded veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of First Baptist Church Knoxville, preceded in death by his parents, Walter Cannon and Laura Bussey Cannon, sisters, Polly Rudd and Ethel Guy, and brother, Henry Cannon. Survivors: Wife of 54 years: Louise Ogle Cannon Daughter and son-in-law: Patti and Mike Browning Granddaughters: Vikki Browning, Rachel Jenne and husband Richard Jenne Great-Grandson: Jacob Jenne Beloved Uncle of: Betty Swan and husband Gerald, Charlotte Cleveland and husband Gene And a host of other nieces and nephews Funeral service 2 PM Monday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Dr. David Hull, Rev. Dave Ward, and Rev. James Stroud officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery in Pigeon Forge. The family will receive friends 1-2 PM Monday at Atchley Funeral Home Sevierville. Mary Edith McKinyen

McKinyen, Mary Edith (Nanny), age 90, of West Knoxville, passed away after a long battle with Alzhimers Disease, Friday, July 5, 2002 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She graduated from the old Knoxville High School. She was retired after 48 years of service from Standard Knitting Mills and served her country by working at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories during World War II. A long-standing member of Middlebrook Pike Methodist Church and a member of the Eastern Star Bearden Chapter #437. She was preceded in death by husband, Blaine Judson McKinyen; son, Bob L. McKinyen; mother, Minnie Irwin Lett; Father, Millard Lett; step-mother, Lillian Lett; brothers, Lawrence Lett and Herbert Lett; sister, Ruth Miller. Grandsons, Noel and Chris McKinyen; great-grandchild, Cody McKinyen. Also survived by brothers and loving spouses: Paul Lett, Millard Lett, Jr., Hugh Lett, and sister Elizabeth Swan; special niece, Joyce Plummer; also many special nieces and nephews and relatives and a host of special friends. The family would like to express many thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Hillcrest who became her second family with special added care while she was living there. Funeral 6:30 pm Tuesday, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Reverend Nathan Malone officiating. Interment 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Woodlawn Cemetery. William Lewis (Pug) Ward

Ward, William Lewis (Pug), age 26, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002. He was of the Baptist faith. He was an employee of Bi-Lo Food Stores. Preceded in death by grandmother Billie D. War Wife, Tonya Ward; children: William Spencer, Madison Abigail, and Emily Hayden; father and step-mother, William (Bill) and Kathy Ward; mother and step-father, Janice and Vinnie Martelli; sister and brother Gina and Rosario Martelli; grandmothers Lovetta Alexander and Lucille Alexander; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral service Monday, 8:00 PM, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Mike Cowler and Rev. Teddy R. Mitchell officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Jason Kirkland, Scott Stephens, Robbie Hillard, Chris Hatfield, Ed Edmonds, Jr., Greg Edmonds, and Michael McGinnis. Family and friends will meet Tuesday at 12:30 at Berry Funeral Home to go in procession to Woodlawn Cemetery for a 1:00 PM interment service. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Thomas Jefferson Stroud III

Thomas J. Stroud, III, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday July 4, 2002 at his home in Gatlinburg, Tn. Tom was born October 2, 1954 in Americas, Ga. Surviving Tom is his wife and sole mate Cathy Sarvis Stroud; parents, Mary Jane and Tommy Stroud of Crystal River, Fl.; son, Tommy of Lakeland, Fl.; Aunts and uncles, Sara and Charlie Dubuque of Rogersville, Tn., Joyce and Bill Peak of Huntsville, Al. and cousins, Mary Jane Flake, Ed Skinner, Bill Peak, III, Lynn Bruce and Susan Seija. Tom’s love of music brought to others as well as himself countless hours of enjoyment. He was an accomplished musician playing the guitar, mandolin, fiddle and the banjo. The Clarion Inn and Suites of Gatlinburg is where Tom was employed. He loved his work and the many friends he made. A memorial service will be 3 P.M. Sunday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville, Tn. with Father William Nevils officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to “cats” at the Sevier County Animal Shelter, 959 Gnatty Branch Rd., Sevierville, Tn. 37868-0976.

Chad Rittenhouse officiating. The family will meet Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Valley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, for the interment service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday before the funeral service at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
